Chiefs Activate Kolby; Trim Engram

From Jacksonville, Florida

As expected the Chiefs activated RB Kolby Smith from the Physically-Unable-To-Perform list on Saturday and he should be active on Sunday against the Jaguars.

To make room for Smith, the Chiefs released veteran WR Bobby Engram.

Smith suffered a patella tendon injury to his right knee on November 2, 2008 while playing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arrowhead Stadium. The injury is considered one of the most serious knee injuries that a player can suffer and it’s usuall a 10 to 12-month rehab.  It was certainly that for Smith, who began training camp on the PUP list and then began the regular season on the same list. He began practicing three weeks ago and the Chiefs had to make a decision on him. They could have activated him, sent him back to the PUP list or released him.

Engram was one of the big name free agent signings by Pioli/Haley in the off-season. While he brought a professional demeanor and approach to the job, Engram’s physical skills after 14 seasons had deteriorated and he was a marginal receiver. In two of the last three games, he was a healthy game-day inactive. He caught five passes for 61 yards.

Please Lord, help Kolby provide a spark in the Chiefs running game. I also ask that he can replace L.J. and average 100 yds a game. I know this is a lot to ask but through you all things are possible. In your name, Amen

Is this a one game tryout? I don’t mean for Kolby, I mean for L.J.. If Smith and Charles show life, maybe, just maybe, Larry is headed into that world of, which team is desperate enough to pick me up. Or will they grab the Edge instead? Thirty and a running back, prospects are bleak if released.

I believe that Haley will rotate Kolby Smith, Savage and Charles through out the game unless one fumbles or shows a real spark and makes some big plays. If that should happen then I would expect to see LJ be a game day inactive for much of the rest of the season. I do not expect to see LJ get cut till after the season is over. I also do not see Pioli and Haley caring if Larry breaks Priest Holmes record or not. It’s all going to depend on who gives them the best chance to win.

Agreed Merwin. Or LJ will be deactivated and sent home with pay only to be cut at the end of the season. Good to see Kolby back can’t wait to watch this game.

I hope Pioli learned to stay away from old bums like Zach Thomas, Engram, Goff, Mike Brown, etc next offseason. That was my biggest criticism of the offseason. Far too many of those type signings for a team in the Chiefs position.
As for Kolby, he’s mediocrity personified. Can’t wait for LJ to be active again next week in the drive to surpass 75.
