Camp Practice Update 8/10 P.M.

From River Falls, Wisconsin

The Chiefs defense ruled the day during the team’s afternoon practice session at UW-River Falls.

Whether it was the seven-on-seven drill, the team work drill or the two-minute drill, the defense really stood up and played well. About the only spot portion of practice they lost to the offense was in the half-line run drill. There, the Chiefs running game was far more dominant than the run defense.

Rookie S Ricky Price had a pair of interceptions in the team work portion of practice, grabbing passes from Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen. Earlier in seven-on-seven, CB Ricardo Colclough grabbed an interception.

But the defense really stood up in the last 10 minutes in the two-minute drill. The Chiefs offense had 120 seconds, three timeouts and 80 yards to score a touchdown. QB Matt Cassel was able to get a pair of first downs, but the next four plays went like this: sack by LB Derrick Johnson, incomplete to WR Mark Bradley as CB Brandon Flowers broke up the play, completion to WR Devard Darling that just as easily could have been a sack for Mike Vrabel. On fourth down, Cassel found RB Javarris Williams short for what would have been a first down, but FS Jarrad Page leveled Williams with a big hit and the ball came out and was ruled incomplete.

With the second units, Brodie Croyle got five plays and produced one first down, hitting WR Dwayne Bowe on the first play for 12 yards. After that it was incomplete, a sack by CB Donald Washington on a blitz, an incompletion across the middle t o TE Jake O’Connell and then a sack on fourth down by DE Glenn Dorsey. Too bad to, because Croyle got the throw off and Bowe made a great catch on the sidelines, getting his toes in bounds.

Some other moments and nuggets from the practice, that went down in full pads under partly cloudy skies:

– Todd Haley says  there are no starting jobs locked down so take this note with that caveat, but Dwayne Bowe no longer runs with the first team offense.  All through the P.M. practice, Darling and Bradley were with the first team. When the No. 1 offense went out for the two-minute drill with four receivers, it was Darling, Bradley, Bobby Engram and Terrance Copper. When the No. 2 offense hit the field, Bowe joined them.

– Who needs Tony Gonzalez? In the seven-on-seven drill, in the span of about five plays, O’Connell made a great diving catch, Sean Ryan caught a deep pass down the middle and Brad Cottam caught a short pass and then ran through the secondary untouched.

– Draft choice Colin Brown spent the whole practice working at right guard and looked good doing it. In fact, he looked more comfortable in pass protection inside than outside at tackle.

– K Ryan Succop was four-for-four on FGs, hitting from 37, 37, 42 and 45 yards. Succop also had nine kickoffs, with only one landing in the end zone. He averaged the five-yard line, but was kicking into a light wind.

– Working as kick returners in the practice were WR Rodney Wright, WR Quinten Lawrence and RB Dantrell Savage.

– During a special teams segment early in practice, the quarterbacks work with centers taking snaps and practicing pass drops. Working with them snapping the ball in this practice was RG Mike Goff.

– Eight players sat out the workout; it was the same group as the A.M. practice, with ILB Zach Thomas the only starter.

Colin Brown our future RG? Sounds good to me. We’ll have to replace Goff at some point soon anyway. Now just that pesky RT position…

  • August 10, 2009  - ED says:

Man Bowe needs to get it together second article I read today where he’s practicing with the second team. If he’s not going to step up then trade him and a 3rd rd pick for Boldin we’ve got the cap space to give Boldin a long term contract. Why not? At least Boldin has proven status of an elite receiver. And could be a reliable every day target for Cassell. Come on Bowe. I’m pulling for you but not if you’re not going step it up and emerge a true #1 receiver not on this team but in the league.

Good to here the defense is playing well, still a concern that we’re not doing well against the run though.

  • August 10, 2009  - alex k says:

Such a typical Pioli Patriots type move to get a Tackle in the 5th round who no one thought would be drafted and turn him into a guard. I know he has great talent, just not much experience, this could be really good learning behind goff at RG

Bowe is simply getting some of what Fitz got when he lost weight before last year and was a bit negative about it(although lets face it Fitz is never very negative or outspoken)

At this point, I want to see some of this pass rush this weekend to believe it can come against a line without a Mcintosh.

  • August 10, 2009  - alex k says:

I wouldnt make that trade….Bowe seriously has the chance to be great due to his tackle breaking ability..plus you get a few extra years with Bowe…just my opinion.

  • August 10, 2009  - findthedr says:

    Bowe>Boldin

Bowe is younger and on his rookie contract, has more yrds over the last 2yrs, and Boldin has lost 4 fumbles over that time period.

“Todd Haley says there are no starting jobs locked down so”

    - with apologies Duh-wayne… catch the football.

“take this note with that caveat, but Dwayne Bowe no longer runs with the first team offense.”

    - not surprised; Last week ‘getreal’ asked could Bowe be just an expensive backup? Rin said -

“- yes – if Bowe plays like he has to date with all his inconsistency he could well be a backup. has no sense of humor whatsoever appears so Dwayne’s buttfangers may well lead him to the bench.”

This will come as a great shock to ‘Scottie The Blog Snot’ who told ‘getreal’ response question -

    “Bowe is not a back-up.”

Thanks for playing Scottie. We have some nice parting gifts for you…

    daddy-o, ’search’ & ‘check’ affirming…

Gifts Iam all for that !!!!!! The one gift if I was to guess on this blog……. would be for you to change into a Chiefs Fan . One that at least has a wait & see attitude . Are you that negative in all aspects of your life????????? J. T.

  • August 10, 2009  - Tyler says:

Bowe may have his share of catching troubles, but lets completely ignore the fact that the rest of the receiver corps are struggling too. In one of the recent drills where the coaches would hit the receivers after catches, Bowe and Toomer were the only ones making grabs consistently. Bowe isn’t going to be second string when it comes time in September, Haley is trying to get the best out of him. If there weren’t consequences Bowe wouldn’t get better. Haley is just raising his ceiling instead of babying him into a mediocre player.

  • August 10, 2009  - Mark says:

Typical Parcells/Haley move. Show the big dog, Bowe, and therefore the team as a whole, that no one is safe from doing things the right way. Players are accountable, not like the previous incompetant who let anything and everything go. I wouldn’t read much into this. 2 days ago, Darling was thrown off the field for his own mental lapse, and people were speculating he’d be cut. Today he’s the #1 WR. It’s just PRACTICE. Bowe will be our #1 WR. Book it. Haley is just coaching and motivating Parcells style. It’s beautiful to read about.

  • August 10, 2009  - BinSC says:

It is also good motivation for the 2’s and 3’s to bust ass. They see that they really do have a shot to be a starter. Get the best out of everyone this way.

  • August 10, 2009  - SG says:

“Draft choice Colin Brown spent the whole practice working at right guard and looked good doing it.”

    Which unit was he with?

  • August 10, 2009  - truthfull T says:

great job bob, your doing a spectacular job with these updates.

  • August 10, 2009  - ED says:

Come on findthedr be real Boldin has his jaw torn out last year. When healthy its no question Boldin is an elite receiver. I’m hoping Bowe pans out but if we got a shot at getting Boldin I say take it because when healthy Boldin is one of the top 5 receivers in the league. Hopefully thats a level Bowe gets to shortly. A more fair comparison would’ve been comparing their first couple years in league. In which Boldin clearly had the better first two years. Either way hopefully Bowe will continue to improve but he needs to come around.

  • August 10, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

Todd Haley says there are no starting jobs locked down

I don’t believe that for a second. IMO that is an outright lie. Who is Succop competing against? Who is Colquitt competing against. That is just to mention a couple. I will take any bet that 60% of the starting lineup is already known and set.

  • August 10, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

It doesn’t matter if Bowe is better than Boldin or vise versa. Boldin does not like Haley and I think the feeling is mutual.

  • August 10, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

“Players are accountable, not like the previous incompetant who let anything and everything go.”

    - you know ‘incompetent’ is spelled with two ‘e’s Mark; don’t try denying it…

As Rin said afore: 2009 verse same as last years – “IT’S THE PLAYERS STUPID, NOT THE COACH(ES)!”

And now, time now for another episode of “let’s blame Herm” – Herm was caught from behind in NE last year the 5 yard line, then couldn’t get it in the endzone. Oh, and that dropped pass? Yup, that was Herm, not Bowe.

Herm was also playing CB (though he was wearing Leggett’s #31 jersey when he let TB’s receiver get behind him and score aN decisive TD – Herm headed toward the QB at the LOS instead staying with his man.

Herm also muffed that onside kick vs SD & he was also the shadowy figure on the grassy knoll DALL …November 22, 1963.

It’s Herm’s fault, all of it. This year, even though he’s gone…still his fault. Not fair? Wasn’t last year either, but we shall do this because it pleases us.

We shall do this in spite of the fact that & have already cut from the team, or sat on the 2nd & 3rd teams several of their very own handpicked “any 22’s will do” skidoos while also evidencing disappointment their own ‘09 ’stellar’ draft picks via their depth chart placement.

    - – - – -

finds such as Robertson, Jones & Curtis have already been excised from the roster; now, we look at the rookies & drafted:

#7c K Succopp – Last pick in the entire draft; welcome to KC – you’ll fit right in here Ryan.
Mr. Irrelevant… ’nuff said. Kept over a guy whose name hinted at retch. The last rookie K drafted by the Chiefs: Justin Medlock. ok …

#7b O’Connell – with an H-back paddywack give the man a bone, need help ’cause Tony G’s gone. Miami of Ohio by way of Naples…Florida, not Italy. TE whose lack of size will limit Jake his battle for 3rd string with Crabtree…no, not that one; Tom.

#7a Williams – a HB candidate,Javarris must beat out HB Kolby Smith, who is on PUP. Javy will have to be pretty PU not to, bu that Rin’s money is on that Savage who also returns kicks…stay tuned.

#6 KR/WR Lawrence – he’s so fast that sometimes the ball can’t keep up with his hands…fumble. Veteran Arena League whiz WR/KR Rodney Wright – who averaged 1.7 yards per rush in 2008 is the prime challenger. and so far ‘Q’ looks like he will B a UST unless he catches a break; right. ‘check’. KC should have kept Kevin Robinson.

#5 OT Brown is now an OG – couldn’t beat out All Pro Barry Richardson as 2nd team RT (the same BR couldn’t beat out D ‘Sherman Plunkett’ McIntosh.)
Appears ‘Patriot Way’ swings & misses…again.

#4 CB Washington – journeyman Colclough & free agent Leggett are the backups to the starters; Washington is the backup to the backups; nice. Thanks, another nice find there

#3 DE Magee – 3rd team behind 2nd teamer Wallace Gilberry – he of the famous Traveling Gilberry’s.
    Dorsey & his 3 hundred & (inaudible) lbs. & bum leg can’t be beat…out.

#1 DE Jackson – “The Fugitive” turned himself in late last week…Tyson is still running only now it’s ‘for’ instead of ‘from’

Well the first thing ya know ol’ Ty’s millionaire the Head Coach says ‘Ty run your a** down there!’ He is running – 2nd team – behind none-time All Pro Al Boone (Ty’s second team by default…last season’s 2nd leading QB sacker Jason Babin went to Philly with the Eagles…’gonna fly now’.)

Still, Herm’s to blame; the guy steals food out of his children’s mouths.

    - – - – -

“I wouldn’t read much into this. 2 days ago, Darling was thrown off the field for his own mental lapse, and people were speculating he’d be cut. Today he’s the #1 WR.’

    - speaks volumes just how bad Kansas City’s WRs are – a coached specialty. His students can’t catch the ball… can’t remember where to line up…can’t stay on their feet when they do; yup, “any 22 will do”… wonderful coaching job ‘check’ & the figurehead Ward who has the title.

    “It’s just PRACTICE.”

    - say that to and he’ll make you run 300 yards- then will complain when you fall down in your cuts, can’t stay on your feet & are too fat.

    So, Rin…

Who would HERM have drafted that was available in our draft positions, and why?

    Let’s hear it big guy.

  • August 11, 2009  - Donnie says:

Haley Has to Be Lighting a Fire Under Bowe!! But he is also Hurting the chemistry Cassel and Bowe Need to Build!! Gonzo is Gone if Haley is Crazy Enough to Let Terrance Cooper Be the Teams number 1 Wr When the Reg Season Starts he is more of a Joke than Herm Edwards.. Lotta Chiefs Fans will be Ticked off if Cooper is the starter over Bowe in the Reg Season.. Period

  • August 11, 2009  - Mark says:

Donnie, it’s one day of PRACTICE. Don’t worry about it. It’s just a Parcells motivation tool, and not just aimed at Bowe, but the whole team. We’ve had all kinds of shuffling of the #1’s at plenty of positions. Battle has run with the #1s. So has Leggit, Studebaker, etc. It’s all meaningless until game 1 at Baltimore. Then you’ll see who the true #1’s are, and Dwayne Bowe will be one of them, guaranteed. Wait until the NFL forced depth chart comes out. I expect Pioli/Haley to be quite playful with that. Maybe listing Gutierrez as the #1 QB or other such stuff because the NE guys love to make a farce of some ridiculous NFL rules, like requiring a depth chart, injury reports, etc.

    “So, Rin”

    - yes, and ’so’ good!

“Who would HERM have drafted that was available in our draft positions, and why? Let’s hear it big guy.”

    - (DeNiro/’Taxi Driver’) – “You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to ME?”

Answer – Herm would have drafted better players than &

Too soon to tell – for another 2-3 years even – still, let’s compare the ‘08 & ‘09 drafts each.
Normally a new regime ‘will’ excise a number of players from the previous… no exception 2009. Some players including draft picks are gone and come 2010 some of the ones who make Chiefs 2009 will also be gone; normal attrition.

Of the 8 2009 picks, 5-6 might make the 53 man, another couple on the practice squad (Lawrence and Williams my guess.) Of the ‘08 draft picks, all 12 made the 53 man.

Just for s***s & giggles let’s look at the two classes.

In ‘08, both 7th rounders made Chiefs. Will all 3 7th rounders in 2009 or even 2 make the team?

2008 6th’s Kevin Robinson & Barry Richardson made the team; one’s still here. Will ‘09 6th Lawrence make it? ADVANTAGE Herm as of now.

2008 5th Carr made the team & is a budding star according to some. 2009 5th Colin Brown is now being tried at OG – couldn’t get past 2008 6th Richardson at RT, 2nd team. BIG ADVANTAGE Herm.

2008 4th Franklin made the team, 2009 Washington will try to/probably will. Washington is 3rd team right now. ADVANTAGE for the moment/until 2010?

2008 3rd Charles, Cottam and Morgan all made the team. 2009 Magee should too. ADVANTAGE Herm via sheer numbers; Magee will have to be better ‘09 than Charles was ‘08, otherwise ADVANTAGE Herm.

2008 2nd Flowers made the team, is a budding star. 2009 was none (Casell & Vrabel.) As of now, ADVANTAGE Herm. Boom or bust – ADVANTAGE Herm to become greater or ADVANTAGE to or could be a wash.

2008 1st Dorsey & Albert both made the team. 2009 Jackson will too. ADVANTAGE Herm as of now, could become a greater ADVANTAGE/or just a wash Herm if Dorsey flourishes/crashes and Albert continues to progress; Jackson would have to becomes dominant to gain an ADVANTAGE over Herm’s Albert/Dorsey duo.

Yup, Herm is STILL The Man! heh heh heh

We’ll look back at ‘09 & ‘08 with the hindsight one more season behind us come 2010 for an even better gauge.

Getting back to the history lesson how did we turn out…….. in wins with all this talent. Its the players stupid itsssssssssssss hell why hirer a coach just let them play . I have been around football almost as long & I can tell you without any doubt that a good coach can take his team & beat you . Then take your team & beat his These great players don’t even know where to line up .

With twelve draft picks, sure more made them, some might stick. Will F. is gone, sticking one year is not a success.
Dwayne running 2nd team? Motivation ploy? Or just another failed Herm pick? First rounders are held to a high standard.
One nice think about the new coach, playing experiance or not, his interviews stick to the subject and don’t wander.
It is all just fun and games for bloggers and posters, the proof will be at the end of the season? Will he have improved the team? Remember RTT2W predicted only 2, me, I just watch. Vegas is posting over/under as 6, sounds good, and they are there to make money, not just annoy.

    .
Bowe will be fine, Haley is just motivating him. Plus it’s not unheard of for coaches to want to see what various players can do with the 1st string. About the only way to know what Copper looks like with the starting bunch is to throw him out there and observe.

I see the village tool is in rare form today.

Bowe has more TD’s than Boldin in his first two years in the league 12 to 9, catches are very close in the first two years also, same career average in yards/per catch and Bowe has started every game since he got here.
