Camp Practice Update 8/13 P.M.

From River Falls, Wisconsin

For the first time in this 2009 training camp, the Chiefs had a practice day without pads. That was Todd Haley’s decision as they went through a practice geared towards special teams and preparation for Saturday’s pre-season opener against Houston.

Haley may have regretted his decision on the pads, because the pace and tempo of the work was not to his liking. “It was not perfect by any means, but we did get it under our belts,” was Haley’s evaluation of the session.

The Chiefs made a roster move Thursday morning, released long snapper Tanner Purdum and re-signing long snapper Thomas Gafford. It’s a search for more consistency at the position, as Purdum’s snaps have been trending a bit high in recent practices.

Here’s some info from the workout:

– The No. 1 offense lined up this way: WRs Devard Darling and Terrance Copper, TE Sean Ryan, RB Larry Johnson, FB Mike Cox, QB Matt Cassel and across the offensive line from left to right Branden Albert, Brian Waters, Rudy Niswanger, Mike Goff and Damion McIntosh.  At RT Herb Taylor continues to get some work with the No. 1 unit, as does TE Brad Cottam.

– The No. 1 defense lined up this way: DEs Alfonso Boone and Glenn Dorsey, NT Ron Edwards, OLBs Mike Vrabel and Tamba Hali, ILBs Corey Mays and Derrick Johnson, CBs Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr and Ss Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard. DE Tyson Jackson got some time with the first unit as well. CB Maurice Leggett continues to be the top nickel back.

– The No. 2 defense lined up like this: DEs Wallace Gilberry and Alex Magee, NT Tank Tyler, OLBs Andy Studebaker and Turk McBride, ILBs Jovan Belcher and Monty Beisel, CBs Leggett and Ricardo Colclough and Ss Jon McGraw and Mike Brown.

– WR Rodney Wright was the only player working as a punt returner. On kick returns, it was Wright, WR Quinten Lawrence, RB Dantrell Savage and CB Londen Fryar.

– Not participating in practice were: Gs Wade Smith and Tavares Washington, S DaJuan Morgan, ILB Zach Thomas and RB Kolby Smith.

I wouldnt be suprised if the chiefs end up eventually picking up a LS from the patriots, and a WR from Arizona.

    Nice reporting Mr. Gretz!

    No Ingram, Toomer, Bowe, surprising!!

Guess we will wait and see at the start of the regular season who the true starters will be.

I predict Taylor beating out d-mac later. D-Mac must have improved since last season to be with the #1 offense. IMO

Thanks Bob, Great updates as always.

I must say, Morgan every single day looks more and more likely to be cut, or put on PuP all season.

  • August 13, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

From the River Falls website: “Head Coach Todd Haley was disappointed with the amount of effort from both sides of the ball.”

    - well that’s a first this training camp, huh; what happened – somebody drop a pass… or 10?

    - – - – -

If Rin Tin Tin’s lyin’, He’s dyin’ (read more from River Falls)

“There were a few dropped passes during this afternoon’s practice.”

    - told you…

“Receivers Amani Toomer, Quinten Lawrence, and Bobby Engram all had drops during the team’s work against air.”

    - air was All Pro last season… meanwhile, twas another opportunity a teaching (a lesson) moment -

    – ‘Q’, you’re excused.’

Q – ‘I am? Thanks coach. I’ll catch it next time.’

    ‘No, I mean your excused…turn in your playbook.’ [[ rimshot/cymbal crash! ]]

    - – - – -

“During 11-on-11, receiver Dwayne Bowe dropped a pass from quarterback Matt Gutierrez.”

    - Gut’ is the new QB – Bowe didn’t want the passer to feel neglected…

“The pass hit Bowe right in the hands, in the middle of his body.”

    - well, they’ve located the problem: Dwayne was born with hands attached to his abdomen…isn’t that called ’short-arming’ it?

    - – - – -

    * And in other news: Ryan over Cottam, Darling & Copper over Bowe… don’t he know.

    * Last CB spot between #4 pick Washington & free agent signee Daniels?

    * Exit ‘Q’ stage left from punt returns, Rodney be the Wright man for the job – Savage to block ‘Q’ on kickoff returns.

Zach Thomas and DuJuan Morgan: the young & the old try & break the cycle (stationary)…

Taylor is a decent backup LT because he is light enough on his feet to deal with speed rushers (RDE)….I just dont think Taylor is strong enough to be a RT.

He isnt a mauler. Too bad Richardson is not yet able to win the job.

“The Chiefs made a roster move Thursday morning, released long snapper Tanner Purdum & re-signing long snapper Thomas Gafford.”

    - uh oh! & release yet another of their own HANDPICKED “any 22 will do”r’s in lieu of (re)signing a [ drumroll ] HERM EDWARDS PLAYER!
    [[ RIMSHOT/CYMBAL CRASH!!! ]]

heh heh heh – we love it!

That NOW makes 4 “any 22 will do” who didn’t – Patriot Way-ers come a cropper: Robertson and Jones plus Tony Curtis (loved you in ‘Houdini’ Tony) and now Purdham… what a purty picture
of grand plans gone oh so wrong. Right ‘check’

    & proven – WRONG – YET AGAIN!

I’m not sure what’s going on with Zach Thomas. He was supposed to be a bandaid for us this season at ILB. I’m liking what I hear about this corey mays fellow though. I’d still like LB to be our first priority in the draft.

Also, it doesn’t sound like Pioli’s guys’ are working out. I’ll give jackson a break since he held out. But Engram? Not starting, Toomer? Not starting. ZT? Injured or something. Goff so far is the only starter and he doesn’t really have that much competition. I want to give pioli his chance, but (1) the NE guys really seem to disappoint when they are away from Belicheat.

Also, Herb Taylor is a swing tackle, he can play both sides, it’s not like they put the physically stronger DE on the Left side of the D-line. I’d like him to take out Dmac’s number one spot. Barry Richardson might not even make the team this year. His problem coming out of the draft was his dedication and Haley won’t put up with that at all.

rin tin tin is like the worst thing this website has to offer.

  • August 13, 2009  - Ian says:

Rin Tin just makes himself look bad don’t even mess with him, if this is all that he does in his spare time, than he is probably a 40 year old who is unemployed living in his mom’s basement and hoping he can make people as miserable as he and his family are, ain’t that about right Rin

  • August 13, 2009  - Ian says:

plus none of his posts make sense so he isprobably mentally challenged so I won’t pick on him…..

anyways I heard from a source that ashley lelie was in for a visit but I don’t know how credible the source is. anybody know something?

  • August 13, 2009  - Michael says:

Ashley Lelie? Man, that guy has been around. Tons o talent and speed; never put it together with anyone.

What do you mean by Pioli’s guys? Anyone who is still on the roster, is now a Pioli and Haley guy, or they wouldn’t be there.

Pioli and Haley’s success, or the team’s for that matter, doesn’t hinge on players like Thomas, Vrabel, Toomer, Engram, et.al, starting for the team. They’d probably really like for some of them to, especially Thomas and Vrabel, because that means they still can play at a high level and be leaders and mentors on the field.

But, first and foremost, all the vets were brought in to teach and compete. To show the younger guys how it’s done and to push the younger guys. If that gets accomplished, these are sucessful signings for the team.

I still think Thomas, Vrabel, Goff will start, and Toomer and Engram will see plenty of time. Although, as stated earlier, Mays has been looking pretty good going in for Thomas. Who knows, at some point Mcbride might take some time from Vrabel, or Colin Brown from Goff, but I don’t see that for awhile. However, if it did, it would be great for the team to have the younger guys stepping up.

  • August 14, 2009  - hmills says:

You idiots are encouraging Rin, by rising to the bait. The only reasonable response if you think a guy is just being an idiot is SILENCE.

Michael: Nice comments. Depth chart, as reported, MIGHT tell us something about how players are grading out, day to day. I couldn’t care less about 2,000 yards in 2 seasons by Bowe, if he’s dropping balls that hit him in the chest. They shouldn’t be hitting his chest. He needs to catch the damn thing with his hands and secure it.

1,000 yards is great for fantasy football, but in the actual GAMES, dropping an easy pass on 3rd down kills the drive and might lose the game, and we’re not in it to prop up Dwayne Bowe’s or Tony Gonzalez’s fantasy football draft status. We’re here to win games. Inconsistent players have no place in the starting lineup. This isn’t about slobbering over a few flashes. This is about every play, every day. This is about players you can COUNT on.
