Camp Practice Update 8/17 P.M.

From River Falls, Wisconsin

Todd Haley was all over his offense in the Chiefs Monday afternoon practice here in the northwoods.

He kept  up a constant chatter throughout the workout of encouragement, criticism and frustration as he asked his offense to be productive and start fast.

There were mixed results. At the end of practice, the Chiefs went into a situation period. The No. 1 offense had two minutes and 80 yards to score a TD with no timeouts. On seven plays, QB Matt Cassel had led  the offense to the defense’s 43-yard line, but on the eighth play, his pass was picked off by CB Maurice Leggett.

The No. 2 offense had this situation: 50 seconds to play, one timeout and they needed a FG to win, with the ball starting ata their 40-yard line. Basically, the offense needed to get to the defense’s 25-yard line to set up a kick. QB Brodie Croyle completed two short passes and was forced to use his timeout. A third-and-2 play became a third-and-7 play when TE Brad Cottam jumped early and was penalized for a false start.

But on that play, Croyle found WR Mark Bradley wide open about 20 yards down the field and hit him in stride. Bradley then ran untouched through the No. 2 defense for a touchdown.

Other notes and highlights from the afternoon practice:

– WR Devard Darling left practice with about 30 minutes to go and trainers were working on his right shoulder. Typical of the new regime, Darling had an ice bag taped to his shoulder, and was then sent to the rehab area, where he rode a stationary bike for the rest of practice.

– With Darling out, WR Dwayne Bowe got some snaps with the first-team offense, catching three passes from QB Matt Cassel during the teamwork portion of practice.

– Sitting out the workout were the same four players that missed the morning practice: QB Tyler Thigpen, RB Kolby Smith, G Tavares Washington and ILB Zach Thomas, who did a lot of running and cutting during his work and looks like he’s close to being able to come back. Again, the Chiefs will release no details on his injury.

– In the team run portion of practice, the defense dominated, winning nine of the 12  plays.

– RG Mike Goff got the day off from the pass protection drill as Wade Smith handled the snaps at the position against the pass rushers. Goff took all the other snaps on the right side. Barry Richardson again ran with the first team O-Line at right tackle.

– In a red zone 7-on-7 passing drill, the Chiefs offense had 12 plays and scored just one TD as Cassel hooked up with WR Terrance Copper.  Leggett, CB Brandon Carr and FS Jon McGraw knocked down passes in or near the end zone.

– After practice seven players caught balls off the machine as kick or punt returners; Leggett, Rodney Wright, Taurus Johnson, Londen Fryar, Dantrell Savage, Quinten Lawrence and Jackie Bates.

Good to hear Bradley doing well. He made a great catch and run in the preseason. Like Bowe, Bradley has not reached his maximum potential. Based on his ability he’s clearly a number 2 receiver. Hopefully he and Bowe both live up to their potential and be the starting wideouts for this team when the season starts.

I really dont know who is going to be on the final roster at WR.

    Bowe: lock
    Toomer: lock
    Engram: lock
    Cooper: lock, special teams
Bradley: ? I like him over Darling
Darling:? runs with starters but that doesnt mean anything.
    Lelie: ? deep threat
Wright: ? kick/punt returner? They will probably sign a returner once all the cuts are done.
Lawrence: practice squad, dont see him winning the KR/PR job.

8 receivers, and they might sign a guy or 2 after all the cuts are done. Lance Long from Arizona, kick/punt returner from somewhere?

I see KC trying to sign a WR, KR, RT, LB, and maybe another Olineman. I bet they try and trade Turk, he doesnt look like a LB and isnt very good to a 4-3 team. they might try and trade Darling or Bradley.

Trade Turk? who McBride? McBride have been playing well all training camp. So I hope you wasn’t talking about trading McBride.

I’m not so certain that Engram is a lock.

    * Yet another [DRUMROLL] INT by Mutt Ca$$el…

    * Meanwhile, another TD pass by Brodie Croyle! [RIMSHOT/CYMBAL CRASH!]

    - Brodie Croyle is better than Ca$$el – and it’s not even close. Tyler Thigpen too is better than Mutt.

    Mutt’s new name – #7 – The Money Pit

Engram is no lock. He’s been horrible in camp, dropping as much or more than anyone else. But unlike Carl/Herm, he was signed to an easily cuttable contract, same as all the old guys.
Great news about McIntrash being demoted. Hope it sticks. He is the last remanant of the Carl/Herm overspending for mediocre veteran trash.
Turk has little chance to make this team now with the emergence of Hali, Studebaker, Mays, and Belcher, and maybe Redd. I also hope we can get something for him to salvage the Herm 2nd round waste.

dude what the hell bradleys not a lock are you kidding me you got copper not cooper as a lock but not the guy who made one of the biggest plays in the pre season game, i know ur reatarded.

  • August 17, 2009  - aPauled says:

Interesting that Pioli/Haley only brought in Engram at WR during the off season. This group was obviously weak. Maybe over estimated Bradley, Darling and Lawrence?

Typically NFL teams carry 5 receivers on the 53 man roster. My projection:
    - Bowe (X)
    - Darling (Z)
    - Bradley (Z)
    - Engram (Y)
    - Copper (X)

If Darling or Bradley gets another nagging injury, they would be gone and Toomer the likely beneficiary. May be a player available in the final cuts as some teams are loaded at WR.

keep an eye on the giants cuts, they are loaded with young talented wr’s and cant possibly keep them all.

Maybe you cant read or something but where does it say Bradley is a lock???? I think you are the one that is retarded, not reatarded.

I havent heard that Turk has been playing well. Did you see him the other night he still looks like a big DE, not at all like a LB. Turk McBride was a DT/DE tweener, now he is suppose to play LB, so he goes from DT to LB that will never work. Yes trade him ASAP, he is NOT a LB.

  • August 17, 2009  - ED says:

You guys need read more often I just litsened to Pioli talk about how well Turks been playing. Also he dicussed how impressed he was with Hali and Turk in making the transition. go kcchiefs.com. So before you try to question me cuz do your homework. I remember Bob mentioning how well Turk been playing. He didn’t look bad in preseason game this year either.

Pioli and Haley have no idea what they are doing or talking about.

  • August 18, 2009  - Anonymous says:

Who cares what the final WR/ LB roster looks like or for that matter any position. We have to trust that Pioli/Haley knows talent better than past coaches & if they don’t they well be on TV or blogging on here looking for a fight . PnS

  • August 18, 2009  - Anonymous says:

The only thing that worries me is when the coach/ G.M. keep lesser talent to save face for their drafting / evaluation . I have had that feeling in the past about our Chiefs . Was it Carley Simons that sang Your So Vane. I just cant believe that coaches don’t know by the final cut they made a mistake on some players.Hope springs eternal . PnS

well Pioli also said Lawrence has impressed.

I also wonder how this will breakdown…I believe Lawrence makes it,but I dont even think they are done bringing in recievers…remember even after securing welker/moss the pats signed kelley washington and a few others and loaded their receiving corps.
