Draft Profile: Perrish Cox

NAME – Perrish Cox

Position – Cornerback.

College – Oklahoma State.

Status – Senior.

Size/Weight – 5-11 3/8, 195 pounds

Important numbers – 4.58 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 12 reps in bench press, 32.5-inch vertical jump, 9-feet 5-inch broad jump.

Age – 23.

Honors – First-team All-Big 12 defense ‘09 … Big 12 Conference all-time leader in kick return yardage … Honorable mention All-Big 12 defense ‘08 … Honorable mention All-Big 12 returner ‘07.

College career – A very productive college career ended with Cox being suspended for the Cotton Bowl due to breaking curfew twice in the week leading up to the game. Just a silly way to end a four-year career that featured some big time returns of interceptions, punts and kickoffs.

Stats of note – 49 games, 134 total tackles … 10 INT, 36 passes broken up … 60 punt returns for a 11-yard average with 2 TDs … 117 kickoff returns for a –yard average with 4 TDs.

STRENGTHS – A very good athlete, with speed and quickness, all the attributes NFL teams seek on the corner … can be very physical and he has the speed and jumping ability to recover when beaten … does a good job reading the pass from the movement of the receivers, an advanced tactic for a college CB.

WEAKNESSES – Cox will fall for double moves, literally land on the ground … he takes poor angles when chasing the ball … overall needs to be more disciplined in his coverages … inconsistent in tackling, dropping his head and failing to wrap up at times.

THE RIGHT 53? – Maturity is an issue here, a big issue, because Cox’s maturity is in major question. Everything he can provide physically gets reduced thanks to his arrests last year for speeding and driving with a suspended license, his suspension for missing curfew twice before the Cotton Bowl.

What he said – (about his suspension for the Cotton Bowl) “It was my fault. I shouldn’t have left. I take all the blame. Coach did what he had to do. I had to accept it. If I wouldn’t have left, it wouldn’t have happened.”

End game – Cox cost himself millions of dollars by being a knucklehead. He has the physical skills and resume at Ok State to be a late first, early second-round choice. Instead, he’ll likely go in the third round or later.

ON THE CHIEFS LIST? – Doubtful. He’s a very good athlete and a top notch returner, who could help the Chiefs on special teams. But there are too many skeletons in this guy’s closet. Pioli/Haley are not looking for those types of headaches.
