Chiefs Annouce Thomas; Waive Will Franklin

The Chiefs made it official on Monday, announcing the signing of LB Zach Thomas.

No details of the contract were provided for Thomas.

In another move that would have to rank as a surprise, the Chiefs released WR Will Franklin.  He becomes the second member of the Chiefs 2008 class of 12 draft picks to be released.  Franklin was a fourth-round selection, the 105th player selected overall in the ‘08 Draft out of Missouri.  He appeared in 13 games last year, starting against San Diego in Arrowhead Stadium when the team opened with three wide receivers.

Franklin caught seven passes for 83 yards  and he returned one kickoff for 16 yards.  He had a 42-yard catch against New Orleans.

He joins seventh-round selection TE Michael Merritt on the waiver wire.  Merritt was released earlier this year after he was arrested in Orlando.

regarding Franklin… Why Bob? It cannot be production based.. he’s far too young and if that were the case.. Robinson would have left with him. I have to believe there was an off the field issue of some form.. maybe chemisty with Cassel or the staff is some form; or legal issues yet to be known; or maybe some degenerative injury that hasn’t been announced. I’m baffled by this move.

There must be more to the Franklin thing. I can’t seen any benefit to cutting him now opposed to later unless there was a character issue. But who knows?

Chemistry or chemical close to they same word both mean see you later

Definitely a disciplinary move at this point. If so, good riddance. I doubt he will go on to have a stellar career.

maybe he is not here working out…

I agree with all of you guys must been some character issues because he’s too young of a player to just release this early in his career.

Obviously I do not know but he might have suffered from the “herm - losing/winning does not matter with the Chiefs” attitude. His youth may have been misguided by that past experience.

Still it is a shame if he had any skills for the pro game.

    Hey Everyone,

    Here is my take.

If I were to tell u that we were going to trade Merrit and Franklin for Vrabeal, Thomas and Ingram that would be considered to be an great great upgrade. Our front seven is now better and way deeper.

If our d-line develops (which it damn well must) and it should with you and coming, our cornerbacks will shine.

this does not effect our draft, not at all.

We have a chance to do 3 things:

A.) Have one of best receiving cores in the league.

B.) Have one of the best linebacking cores in the nfl.

C.) Have one of the best bookend offensive lineman in the draft.

I personally and excited about anyone of the 3

Let me guess - Pioli or Haley must be an Oklahoma alum…

InPioli/haley/shottenheimer/cunningham/vermeil/peterson we trust. more old retreads and no superbowls looking like to me. The Chiefs have been here done that hasn’t worked so far. Hope they have a grandstand play for the draft there free agency is bringing back bad memories.

2nd guy gone from last years draft. I expect that total to increase. Herm we don’t miss you. Carl we don’t miss you.

  • April 14, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

lol… Yea Carlm Im with you on that, I was happy to see Herm come in here and when he finally got the chance to dismantle the team and start young I was even happier knowing the future would be bright. The new Regime hasn’t done a whole lot IMO to upgrade the team in the long term, now short term maybe, depends on how young two 36 year old linebackers and a wide receiver can play.

Im sure Franklin will still go on to become good, unfortunately it will be with another team. Im really dreading the rumors of Gonzalez going to Atlanta for a second rounder. There is no correlation in the production we get from Gonzo now and what a second rounder MIGHT provide later.
