Where’s Joey & Other Notes

From Arrowhead Stadium

Joey Porter is having one of the best seasons of his career and he’s headed to the Pro Bowl for thanks to his 17.5 sacks for the Miami Dolphins this season.

But on Sunday against the Chiefs, Porter was invisible.  He was not a factor in the Dolphins defensive effort.  In fact, in the post-game press box stats for the Miami defense, Porter did not appear.  No tackles, no assists,  no sacks, no quarterback hurries, no pressures.  Porter was a non-factor.

He tried both sides of the Chiefs offensive line, going against rookie left tackle Branden Albert and veteran right tackle Damion McIntosh.  Several times he lined up so wide that the running back had to take care of his rush, something both Larry Johnson and Jamaal Charles did without problems.

“We were able to block him striaght up,” said  McIntosh. “We don’t double team on anybody, really.  It’s not the first time I faced him.  Granted he’s done very well this year but we’re not going to go and do something special.”

Porter always has a lot to say on the field during games, and the Chiefs reported he was yapping away like he always does.  But afterwards, he kept  his comments short.

“We were just focused  on trying to get a win,” Porter said. “They played pretty good on the offense.  They had some situations where they were going for it on fourth downs.  They had nothing to lose, so they were taking more chances. They made some plays.”

The Chiefs did make some plays.  Joey Porter did not.

STATS AND STUFF

The Chiefs were two out of four on converting fourth down plays,  but they were only 30 percent (three out of 10) on third down.  That’s just some of the stats you can find in the NFL Game Book for this game. Click here.

INJURIES

The Chiefs reported no new injuries after the game.  CB Maurice Leggett (shoulder) and DE Alfonso Boone (thigh) were not active for the game because of injury.  Also, Wade Smith started at right guard for Adrian Jones, who did play.

The Dolphins were without their defensive leader,  ILB Channing Crowder who was inactive because of injury.

ZEBRAS AND REPLAY

Herm Edwards challenged a no fumble call in the first half,  but lost the replay review.

Jeff Triplette’s crew walked off only seven penalties  in the game, five of those against the Chiefs.  Triplette flagged DT Tank Tyler for unnecessary roughness, saying he went low on Chad Pennington and hit him in the knees.  Replay showed it was a bad call, that Tyler stumbled into Pennington and did  not arrive with any force at all.  The flag wiped out a Miami fumble that was recovered by the Chiefs.

SS Bernard Pollard was hit with a personal foul for a horse collar tackle.  LT Branden Albert was called for a false start.  The Chiefs were offsides on a PAT-defense play and CB Brandon Flowers was hit for a facemask penalty.

MORE GONZALEZ RECORDS AND MARKS

TE Tony Gonzalez caught seven passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.

That leaves him at 91 catches for 1,005 yards and nine touchdowns.  It’s the fourth time in his career that Gonzalez has gone over 1,000 receiving yards.  That’s  more than any other tight end in pro football history.

His consecutive games streak with a catch went to 130 games and his nine TD passes now is the most he’s hand since scoring 10 times in the 2003 season.

That WAS A BS call on M1/A1, hell he was blocked and then stumbled into the guy!!

At the time that was a huge call.

I knew you’d get around to mentining Tony G, Bob
    :)

You know, the offensive line has quietly played very well over the last half of the season, even MacIntosh, who drove everyone crazy at the beginning of the year. Wade Smith has really played well at center and guard. I just wonder how much of the improvement is due to the way the spread offense helps the line. If they’ve really improved overall, it bodes well for next year.

Keep up the great work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC is behind you and we know that you will lead us back to glory very soon now.

AND NOW Clark Hunt has RE-RE-affirmed Herm’s The Man!

    :-)

(PS) Albert is a better OT than Long, and so is Clady of DEN better than Long.

    John–
The refs. have ( with a combo. of doing bad jobs on officiating and missing calls ) litteratly have cost the chiefs WAY to much , some of it goes both ways , but on important plays , its a killer.
Tony called off. pass interfence ,when he fingertip touched defender in the enzone— 2 calls for holding ,1 Larry had 18 yd. gain called back and 10 yd penalty— another on 1yd line ,that raelly did change a close game .
I dont think Herm has done a good job , I think he has done a GREAT job . I wake up at night thinking Im Herm and I have my hands around the neck of this dude in a stripped shirt .

Bowe needs 81yrds to go over 1000. Just like last yr, he would have gotten it if not for the drops.

nonetheless, I hope the chiefs give him a chance at breaking 1k.

  • December 22, 2008  - Merwin says:

Bob, I have to agree, that was a dumb call on Tank Tyler. Heck we got away with a much worse tackle on Brady in the first game. Even the announcers were miffed and later said this is why so many DL players are hesitant to tackle the QB. Because of the chance of a costly penalty, or later a fine from the league. I doubt it would have changed the outcome any. I would like to see Bowe get his 1,000 yards and to see Tony get 100 catches for the year. No matter what happens to the HC after this year. I hope Tony will like what he see’s and want to come back as a Chief’s player next year, he really has been awesome since asking for that trade that never was. And we really need his talent and leadership.

I noticed last nite that Dorsey was getting single-teamed and never got off the line of scrimage most of the line, Whitlock said today the scheme for him is over the guard/head to head. No wonder he is not destroying offenses and I am an idiot. I really though he cannot play but the coaches are not putting him in a position to be successful.

Is it not funny all the herm supporters like to attack the haters and want time to fix things?? In case you did not notice Miami rebuild in the grand total of 3 months during one offseason, you see it does not really take years to rebuild. All that said the WAY/STYLE/KIND of rebuild herm chose will take years to prove it will have any success ever. The team we are playing next sunday has rebuild 6 times, at least, actually been better than the chiefs and slipped back to garbage.

My prediction is herm gets one more year, another draft will some good picks/some bad, and the KC chiefs will maybe 6 games. How much longer do we watch losing? Any of you who are capable of independant thought, wait until the NFL announces prime time games/MNF. If they thinks the chiefs are any good at all, the chiefs will not be left out like this year. This will be the true test of “is herm successful”.

  • December 22, 2008  - arrowhead78 says:

tm1946, your right. Miami rebuilt in 3 months, next year they wont be any better though, the chiefs on the other hand will be better, because there youth will be served… Miami has only 3 or so rookies playing as starters everyone else starting are vets, so how many more years do they have before they get old and need to rebuild again? I dont give them more than two years…

  • December 22, 2008  - ED says:

Agreeed arrowhead78. Herm has done an excellent job laying our foundation. With another stellar draft and bring in a couple of young vets we’ll be fine next season and the seasons to come. I hope we sign a guy like Vilma in the offseason to come in and play middle linebacker. Especially if Herm is going to be here. The guy is young and has proven to be a solid middle linebacker and its a position we definately need some improvement. Besides the guy will also bring leadership which is something this team lacks on defense. Jordan Gross would be a good pick to come in and play some right tackle. He’s been solid for the Panthers all season and he’s making the pro-bowl this year. I say those are two guys that can definately come in and help this team get over the hump next year.

  • December 22, 2008  - Nick says:

I agree that call on tank was horse*(&^…later in the game babin had penningtons leg and just let go when he could have easily had a sack, i think partly due to the crap called earlier in the game on tank.

The defense looked scrappy at times, everyone flying to the ball and gang tackling, sure wish there would be more of that consistently throughout the game, not just in spurts.

  • December 22, 2008  - tm1946 says:

We will see what we will see. We need herm to be successful. What I do not get is there are no garantees in the NFL. You guys do not remember Joe Delaney? Good guy, excellent player, and a heroic death. Truely sad but your in a few year the chiefs will be great, why?, where?, how?.

herm haters may not be loveable but really who has ever been successful doing it herm’s way, NOBODY, that’s who. Is herm a greater coach Hank, or whomever? He has no history to support it, period. By the way, herm’s way was 19 young players with NO support from veterans to learn their trade, 30 mil under cap, get rid of the only good DL player (did not want to be here, ok), devote huge amount of effort to fix DL and FAIL miserably, has problems managing game mostly due to lack of knowledge of the offensive side, and on it goes. It seems dreams are enough for some of you.

See you back as KC Chiefs Head Coach in 2009 Herm…same bat time, same bat channel!

    :-)

  • December 22, 2008  - ED says:

Tm1946 all I have to say is this. Herm took the Jets to the playoffs 3 out of 5 years as head coach. Manjeni 1 out of his last 3 years and might I add he has a much better roster in NY this year than any other year. If he can have a roster fill with guys that is not nearly as talented as the competition has been this year playing close games. Then I can only imagine what he can do once we bring in a few vets next year. Besides he already this year was for the young guys next year will bring in veteran players to fill in the holes. So will just have to wait and see. I”m preety sure all this experience these young guys have gotten will payoff next year.

  • December 22, 2008  - Scott says:

    My thing is…

Yes, I have seen some improvement in the young players over the course of the year.

No, I haven’t seen any improvement in the Head Coaching.

I’m not a “Herm-hater”. I think he’s a good guy. And a decent coach. Just not a decent Head Coach. I think he’s in over his head at that position. Sure, the players claim to like him. He’s their “buddy”…a former player who’s been there and done it. That doesn’t make for a good Head Coach. You think Parcels was ever the players’ “buddy”? You think he cared? Or Bill Cowher? Or any number of other really good coaches? The Chiefs need a Head Coach with some “balls”. And Herm doesn’t have ‘em. I don’t mean that in a bad way, really…some guys have ‘em, and some don’t. But a leader HAS to have “balls”, though. That’s KC’s biggest problem…lack of leadership. On the sideline…and in both the offensive and (especially) the defensive huddles.

    Just my two cents.

When the new Gm comes in I think he will go a different direction in keeping Herm . He will bring in a new head coach . The Gm will have the same expectations Clark wants when it comes to the youth movement that Gm will bring in his head coach with the same mindset of keeping this youth movement. Herman Edwards win and loss record will not bode well with the new Gm. Thats why I think he will not return next season. Some people has said that the players like him and he brings energy to this football team okay why has this team not responded with the same energy he is installing . Do not tell me about the could of and should of excuses . I think some of the players would not mind if he was gone . If these players love him so much then why could they have at least pull out three of their close losses. This coach has these players playing out of positions the defense is so confused when it comes down to learning Gun’s scheme and Herm’s Tampa 2 . If Herm is letting Gun operate the defense then why are we running the Tampa2 . I am not saying Gun’ s scheme is working too but if you are letting your coordinators run the offense and defense then you should let them and Herm is not we are seeing the Tampa 2 in this defense. Poor defensive line play is bad nine sacks that is not going to cut it with the new Gm. I will give Herm credit at the cornerback positions they are rock solid but the line is so dreadful. And some pundits as Bob has put it has said that it was Carl who wanted to bring in a little veteran help but Herm said no gut it out entirely . So to me I think you bring in a guy that is not about being a player’s buddy but about business .Anyway it will not be a bad move if you bring in a new head coach Heck! You are rebuilding anyway.

  • December 22, 2008  - ED says:

People say Dungy and Lovie are players coaches too. But they win. Dungy won a Super Bowl. I hate to hear this buddy crap at the end of the day the guy has players playing hard for him he can’t help he hasn’t finished building this team yet to win games. Their isn’t a certain way to coach everyone doesn’t have to be a yellar and screamer you just have to get your team ready to play every Sunday The fact these games are close inspite us having a far inferior roster to these teams tell me alot about Herm as the head coach. I don’t know where you guys come from saying that crap. Bellichick isn’t a screaming head coach but he demands respect and his teams play hard for him. Same with newly installed head coach Mike Smith.Coaching can only take you so far you need the personel to back you up. Herm hasn’t had that luxury since 2006 when he led this team to the playoffs and even then the team was on the downside. 2007 was a bad roster and this year the team is full of young players. But will see in 2009 when they bring him back when he’s winning I want to see what you guys will have to say then. Because if he has this roster competing like this I can only imagine what he can do with an even more improved roster next year.

  • December 22, 2008  - Scott says:

    ED,

Yelling and screaming has NOTHING to do with having “balls”.

And I agree with you…the players ARE playing hard, for the most part. They’re just not playing SMART. That’s coaching. Looks like to me that what the players are learning…they’re learning on their own.

  • December 22, 2008  - NFL fan says:

Ed he knew before he took over this football team that it was old he did not have to take the job if Carl wanted to keep it that way he should of decline stop making excuses for this man and Lovie has cooked the meal but never tasted the championship and as far as Dungy goes yes he did win a championship but how bad was it when Mora left he left him with Peyton Manning and Tom Moore their offensive coordinator. And as far as a yeller or a spitter coach goes it does not matter to me if he yells or don’t look you are starting over anyway he had his chance three years he could not deliver . Move on

  • December 22, 2008  - NFL fan says:

And as far as playing hard every football team plays hard it is also about results this is a win now league .

  • December 22, 2008  - ED says:

First of all Scott playing smart is what their doing. Playing smart has alot to do with not getting dumb penalties which by the way we’re the least penalized team in the league. We’re losing because the team is young, has a made up offense because of the quarterback situation, and we’re playing a 3rd string quarterback. Next the guy is getting the most out of this roster filled with a bunch of young guys and guys off the street who people never heard of if that ain’t coaching then what in the world is it.

Next to whoever NFL fan is Dungy won 2 Super Bowls. One which the team he built in Tampa Gruden got credit for and never been back since. And get some football knowledge Lovie took the Bears to a Super Bowl with Rex Grossman as quarterback if that ain’t a sign of a hell of a coach then obviously I must be talking to an idiot who has no NFL knowledge that goes with being a fan of the NFL.

  • December 22, 2008  - ED says:

And next Scott if players can learn on their own then I can be an NFL head coach that was about the dumbest statement I’ve heard today. Players need good coaches to develop them you can put in the extra work on your own but you need someone to show you the way.

  • December 22, 2008  - tm1946 says:

Ed you really believe the chiefs will be winning next year? It just is not so, will not happen. The construction of 2008 team will take at least until 2010 to preform at any upper level. I know I am beating herm to death but he chose to operate with 19 young players and few veterans to support the team. No matter who the HC is next year these growing pains must be lived with.

The chiefs may win 6 games next year and if herm sticks to his plan maybe 10 – 13 new young players. That will mean over HALF the team will have less than 3 years experience in the NFL. Partner, they cannot win with that lack of experience. Unfortunately, a different HC will have to deal with it, cannot be changed.

KC Chiefs Head Coach 2009 – Herm Edwards!

    :-)

First of all tm1946 where do you get your information from. Herm said will use 7 picks we have this year plus bring in some vets

  • December 22, 2008  - ED says:

I meant in 2009 he wanted to use the 7picks next year and bring in some vets to fill in the holes. I take it you don’t watch his press conferences

    ED says:
“And next Scott if players can learn on their own then I can be an NFL head coach that was about the dumbest statement I’ve heard today.”

Glad I could make your day. And you might as well take a shot at being coach. I’m guessing you could get lucky and win a game or two along the way.

    ED says:
“Players need good coaches to develop them you can put in the extra work on your own but you need someone to show you the way.”

EXACTLY!!! Exactly. I’m hoping KC gets one real soon.

LOL Scott, Hey Ed means well, can’t deny his loyalty or his conviction, he is about the only guy on here that really means what he is saying.

Hang in there Ed, you’ll see, a change now will be a good thing for the Chiefs. I really like the way you believe in Thigpen, I was one of the first guys to call for him to be the starter (the first time Croyal got hurt).

Keep believing dude, just don’t get hung up on one player or one Coach. Someone to Challenge Thigpen in the off season is the right thing for the team as a whole. Have faith in Thigpen’s skills and welcome a hearty competition for EVERY position on the field, that’s how teams build dynasties.

  • December 22, 2008  - Mark says:

Don’t insult Tony Dungy by comparing Herm to him. Dungy is and always has been an outstanding Head Coach. And before that an outstanding Defensive co-ordinator. Herm is a losing Head Coach in way over his head. Herm tries to take credit for what “He and Tony” did in TB, but it was Tony who built it, not the secondary coach. Herm might not even measure up as a defensive co-ordinator, since he’s never been one, and seeing how he has destroyed our defense. The one thing they have in common is they are both good guys, but it takes more than being a good guy to be an effective NFL Head Coach. Tony doesn’t have the ego and stubborness Herm has. Tony has a resume a mile long, Herm isn’t remotely in Tony’s class as a Coach.

  • December 22, 2008  - Rin Tin Tin says:

Herm Edwards – as good as ANY Head Coach in the NFL! And HE’s ours now and in 2009!

    heh heh heh

    :-)

  • December 22, 2008  - True Red and Gold says:

Tony does have a tremendous amount of respect for Herm as a person and coach. Herm was DB and Assistant Head Coach for Tony. He had more to do with Tampa’s rebuild than the haters will admit. The truth is that during that rebuild Herm was Tony’s closest confidant. I would like to see Tony as our new GM and Herm as HC. Those two would work great together.

  • December 23, 2008  - Scott says:

I know, John. Ed’s cool…I got no worries. Just bustin’ his chops a little.

Hey, we’re all Chiefs fans here…or we wouldn’t BE here. Right? We all want the same thing, for our team to be competetive. Although we do have different ideas on how to get there.

Plus, it’s pretty easy to play Head Coach and GM sittin’ behind a keyboard.

  • December 23, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:
