What Should Chiefs Do At No. 3/Volume #2

It was just over a month ago we asked you what you wanted the Chiefs to do with the third pick in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. This was in late February, before the start of free agency and before the trade that brought Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for the club’s second-round choice.

At that time the vote was centered on two choices: Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry and trading down.  Curry had 27 votes, trading down had 26 and a very distant third was QB Matt Stafford with 6.5 votes.

OK, it’s more than a month later and we are a month away from the draft, so it’s a good time to take your temperature again.

In 25 words or less, let us know what the Chiefs should do at No. 3.  If you’ve changed your mind since last time, let us know that as well.  Keep it to the name of a player, a trade down or a trade up and reasons why.

Please, no long disertations and chatter here.  Save that for the results when you guys can go at each other on your decisions.

Polls are open now through noon on Monday morning.  Unlike Chicago however, where they say vote early and vote often, how about one vote each.

Trade down! Our O-Line still looks like SWISS CHEESE. Cassel and LJ don’t need more injuries.

  • March 27, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

Curry. Immediate impact. Relatively “safe”. Defense a huge need. Best defender available.

  • March 27, 2009  - cupp says:

OT, Monroe or the likes. If were going to go with Haleys scheme got to give cassel time to find the open man. It’s not sexy but makes the most since.

  • March 27, 2009  - Gump says:

    Fence time(sorry).
If they can stay in the 6-12 range, trade down. If not, Curry.

  • March 27, 2009  - aPauled says:

Aaron Curry is still my choice. 6-3, 245 and runs a 4.55, so he can play inside or be moved around in a flex Defense.

  • March 27, 2009  - Double A says:

    IN THIS ORDER:

    1) Aaron Curry (OLB) – Chiefs can teach him to pass rush

    2) Trade down – for a 1 and early 2 or two 1’s. Then, pick E. Brown (OLB) or C. Barwin (OLB) AND A. Mack (C) or D. Brown (RB)

    IF NO TRADE PARTNERS
    3) Eugene Monroe (OLT)
    4) Michael Crabtree (WR) – but, I wish I knew more about him

  • March 27, 2009  - Double A says:

Above post ^^^ those are my four choices, in order. But it’s too early, Bob!!!

    Here’s who I DON’T want:
    1. Orakpo

  • March 27, 2009  - Scott says:

    I’ll break from the crowd…

Michael Crabtree. Let’s build our own version of Fitzgerald / Boldin right here in KC with Bowe / Crabtree.

I think Curry will go #1 or #2.

  • March 27, 2009  - byzkit says:

Trade down to 6-7 and take Brown.

  • March 27, 2009  - Josh says:

Trade down for Macklin! Instant upgrade on special teams and I think he’d definitely be an improvement on the #3 receiver spot.

  • March 27, 2009  - Spanna says:

Curry. Nobody’s going to want to trade up to #3, and we don’t want to pay #3 money to a LT to play out of position on the right side. Crabtree is the best fallback position if the Lions take Curry, and anybody else (other than the OTs)would be a reach.
If Curry’s not there, trading down would be the obvious second choice, but I don’t think it’s likely to happen…

  • March 27, 2009  - jon says:

Trade Down – people get to tied up in names. there are other OLB in the draft that will do just as will for far less money.

  • March 27, 2009  - Blake says:

Trade down, if you cant, get Curry, dont take an RT with the #3 pick he isnt worth it. Curry can play 3-4 or 4-3.

  • March 27, 2009  - colby says:

I’m going to echo jon on this one. This is a deep LB class, they can draft a couple of good ones later like John Phillips or Scott McKillop. Trade down as far as you want even if you have to compromise “value”. Getting Philly’s two 1sts would be great. If that fails, getting a 2nd rounder would be nice or even a 3rd and 5th if that’s the best that is there.

Save the money, don’t overpay for a top 5 pick two years in a row!

  • March 27, 2009  - RedandGoldRice says:

Trade down (hopefully not too far) and take E. Brown and extra picks somewhere, maybe 2nd and 3rd/ 2nd and 4th rounders depending on how far down we go.
    GO CHIEFS!!

  • March 27, 2009  - tm1946 says:

    SG is correct both times.

  • March 27, 2009  - oscar says:

still think we should trade down and get some extra picks… especially into the 2nd round… philly’s first 3 picks would be optimum… 2 LBs and an OL would certainly be possible and they would all still be quality picks…

  • March 27, 2009  - Harold C. says:

If Curry is there at 3 then take him.

  • March 27, 2009  - Kevin B. says:

Trade down. The chiefs, especially if we are going to a 3-4 (which the signing of Vrabel would indicate ) have glaring needs at more than half of our positions. We lack the 3-4 dominating nose tackle, and we need at least two more LB’s. DJ is fine, Vrabel may have another year or two, but the rest wont cut it. On offense we have a left tackle, and a guard(Goff). We need a good right tackle and someone to replace Shields. We probably need another reciever too. We do have Dwayne Bowe, but lack weapons. This team is a mess. I say we Trade Larry Johnson, Will Shields, and reluctantly Gonz, get our 2nd rounder back and maybe a later pick and trade down iwth our first. Then we need to be aggressive in free agency. I am not all about having a team of overpaid old men, but when you have as many GlaRing needs such as we do the draft isnt going to turn it around alone. get a bunch of guys under two year contracts that can provide experience, and bring our picks along, and keep Cassell from getting his head ripped off.

  • March 27, 2009  - Nick L. says:

    Same vote as volume 1…curry

  • March 27, 2009  - jim lloyd says:

    RB-D. Brown -

  • March 27, 2009  - gorillafan says:

If Curry is still there, take him.

If Curry has already been selected, which is likely, than Crabtree.

I know we need more on the OL and DL, ect. But you cant let him go, hes the 2nd choice

  • March 27, 2009  - steve says:

Trade down, if no partner can be found to trade
with then take the remaining off. tackle. Curry is goint to be a solid linbacker, but will he be an impact player?

  • March 27, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

IMO trade down is not a realistic option. There are few guys worth a top 5 pick in this draft (most of you have said as much) so why would someone trade up there when more than likely their guy will be there at 7,8, or even 9.

My pick is either Monroe or J. Smith. Keeping your QB upright and giving your RB room to run is ALWAYS worth the money.

  • March 27, 2009  - cup cake says:

i say curry if hes their if hes not their i would like to say crabtree but thats what i want not what we need so maybe raji and we could get alot outta dorsey if we trade him

  • March 27, 2009  - IDChieftan says:

Curry, if he is available. He is the best player in the draft. If not let’s try to outscore some people with Crabtree.

  • March 27, 2009  - Johnfromfairfax says:

I’m with Gump but if forced to make a choice at 3 go with Curry.

  • March 27, 2009  - B in SC says:

If they can trade down (big if), then they got Cassel and Vrabel for nothing. Pretty good. They need more picks. Finding a partner is the hard part. We are not one player away.

  • March 27, 2009  - dklogue1 says:

If we have to pick at three I like Curry or a tackle. I know we have a LT but how often do you get to pick at three?

  • March 27, 2009  - Danny Patterson says:

I’d be very happy with Curry, but if they could get teo #1 picks or a one and an early 2, then I say trade down. We have a lot of holes to fill.

  • March 27, 2009  - Randy Webb says:

The Chiefs should try to trade down with the Eagles. The Eagles need a quality tackle. The Chiefs could trade #3 for #21 and #28. The Chiefs could then select from a group of players at WR, LB, and DE. That group would include: WR’s Hakeem Nicks, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Kenny Britt, or Percy Harvin. Linebackers James Laurinaitis, Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing, and Clay Matthews. Defensive Ends Robert Ayers and Tyson Jackson. Not all of these guys will be available but several of them will.

  • March 27, 2009  - charles mulvihill says:

no one really wants to trade for the no.3 pick, unless a truly cant miss prospect falls there. in that case, id be happy if we draft aaron curry.

  • March 27, 2009  - Alex Kor says:

Aaron Curry, at pick 3, leader of the defense, force, and a community guy…he can be the face of the D for years, and has Vrabel/Beisel to teach him either inside our out in the 3/4…

As much as I’d love to deal back and get picks, it makes more sense to take the sure thing, the guy who is a Ray Lewis without the murder charges.

  • March 27, 2009  - Jorge says:

I say Curry. He is an immediate impact player. On that note I have to say, I don’t believe we should trade down. If the trade or deal is too good to be true then ok. But we do not go 2-14 and trade the 3rd position in the draft. Do you guys remember how hard the Chiefs worked to get to 2-14!? I will repeat….WE DO NOT TRADE THE 3RD SPOT IN THE DRAFT AFTER ALL THE HARD WORK IT TOOK IN ORDER TO SECURE THAT SPOT!

    1) CURRY
    2) CRABTREE
    3)OL

  • March 27, 2009  - chiefwurm says:

Gotta be Curry. Immediate impact on our front 7 makes every around better. If he is gone, try to trade down.

  • March 27, 2009  - Matt from OMA says:

Trade down if possible. We need a lot of help. If no good trades available, then probably Curry or an OT.

  • March 27, 2009  - Bart says:

    1) Trade down to 4-9, if can get a second.
    2) Trade down AGAIN to 10-15 to get another second/third and pick 3-4 DE Tyson Jackson or DE/OLB Maybin.
    3) With extra picks: Jarron Gilbert (3-4 DE)& BPA

  • March 27, 2009  - Justin Foote says:

    Crabtree.

  • March 27, 2009  - MarkInTexas says:

Curry. Take quality over quantity in the draft. Trade LJ for an extra pick, albeit 3rd or 4th round. Trade Tony G only for a 1st or high 2nd round pick.

  • March 27, 2009  - Rip 'em a new one says:

I think, but am not certain of this, a month ago I voted for them to take a QB??? That seems right.

Anyway, regardless, today I say the same. Take Sanchez, don’t sign Cassel to a long term contract in order to see what he does with his one year franchise player deal.

Let Sanchez learn and, at the end of it all, if Cassel proves to be the guy, then the Chiefs have their own Brady Quinn, ala Cleveland, to use as a bargaining chip for the 2010 draft for QB needy teams.

If Cassel and/or Thigpen don’t get it done in 2009, Sanchez is a nice insurance policy.

  • March 27, 2009  - DAVE. H. says:

If your gonna spend first round pick money, pick the guy that everyone says is worth it! That way if he is a bust you dont look like the Detroit Lions! Curry is the man, at worst he will be an everyday player that sticks even if he doesn’t end up a superstar,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The right 53, Go Chiefs

  • March 27, 2009  - Josh says:

I would take Curry for sure, if he is already taken I would take Crabtree or a OL.

  • March 27, 2009  - Derek says:

    1) Curry
    2) Crabtree
    3) Raji

  • March 27, 2009  - Niblick says:

Curry. If he is a surprise pick at 1 or 2, look for a trade down. If they can’t trade down, take either Jason Smith or Monroe, whoever is available.

  • March 27, 2009  - lokrath says:

My vote is to trade down long as we switch a 1st round and get and extra pick somewhere in rounds 2-3. I have to say that I’m not in favor of taking a NON-PASSRUSHING MLB with the 3rd pick. I think it would be extremly foolish. Curry IS NOT another Merriman and in a class so deep at LB, it would be a waste.

  • March 27, 2009  - GMoney says:

I say we have been trying to build our defense for the last decade. Now the best Defensive player might be available to us….the pick is Curry!

  • March 27, 2009  - Chiefs Fan says:

Linebacker is very weak. Aaron Curry of Wake Forest.

  • March 27, 2009  - Skrappy says:

    I am sticking with Curry.

If he is not there than Trade or Brian Arakpo from Texas is my #2 for the Chiefs…

  • March 28, 2009  - SBIVVictors says:

    Eugene Monroe.

Geez, people; we need offensive linemen like three years ago. Even with great weapons, we haven’t been able to run and our quarterbacks haven’t had time to pass and have gotten killed (for cryin’ out loud; Thigpen was our second leading rusher last year – tuck and run).

Waters is 32. Goff is 33. We only have one out of five spots filled for the long term (Albert).

  • March 28, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

I like SBIVVictors response… I wouldn’t put Curry in the 3rd pick because he can run and have a great workout. He had 2.5 sacks last year and 1 interception, that doesn’t prove he would have an immediate impact on the defense… I like Everette Brown at the 3rd pick!!

  • March 28, 2009  - Enrique says:

Aaron Curry. Arrowhead Stadium is hungry for some Defense and this man will provide necessary talent. Remember that the succesful Chiefs teams featured outstanding LB corps.

  • March 28, 2009  - Hawaiianchief says:

Aaron Curry, this defense needs a fierce leader, and defense wins championships ( or at the very least gets you into the playoffs, and keeps things competitive.

  • March 28, 2009  - Carlm says:

I haven’t changed my mind. We need linebackers and we need young and hungry not old and crippled. Aaron Curry is the vote.

  • March 28, 2009  - Matt says:

    Trade down

  • March 28, 2009  - MenInRed says:

1st) TRADE DOWN – if possible for more picks

2nd) Curry – if no trade mates available

    It’s all about-

    “THE RIGHT 53″

  • March 28, 2009  - jim lloyd says:

If KC had Sanchez , they would have a lot of money in one place –with a need , still to protect that position , 1st pick QBs are hard to sign .
They need LBs and Off. tackles .

  • March 28, 2009  - jim lloyd says:

RB like D. Brown are hard to find .

  • March 28, 2009  - findthedr says:

    trade down.

  • March 28, 2009  - Tim says:

Trade down. If we can’t get value we want to do that, I’d take E. Brown, Orakpo or whichever OT is still there (Smith or Monroe). You just shouldn’t commit those kinds of dollars to a non-premium position in a salary cap world. A premium position is usually considered : qb, LT, DE (rusher), shutdown CB. Seems that wideouts are hit & miss & the league has gone to rb by committee. Curry, while excellent may not be the rusher we need…even if we go to 3-4.

  • March 28, 2009  - Adrian says:

Currrrrryyyyy… I don’t think that speculation is going to change anytime soon unless the Lions somehow reach a deal with him prior to the draft.

  • March 28, 2009  - JG says:

    Curry

  • March 28, 2009  - DONOVAN says:

We need more draft picks…TRADE DOWN!

  • March 28, 2009  - XianDave says:

Trade down? Sure it would be great, but it will not happen. With the guaranteed money the top picks are getting, having a top is almost a disadvantage in the draft. Given that the Chiefs have already acquired a quarterback with a draft pick, Pioli is not going to use another pick on a QB. Haley said at the Owner’s meetings that they will go with the best available player. Other than QB’s, the top available are LB Aaron Curry, WR Michael Crabtree, OT Jason Smith, and DT B.J. Raji. One of these guys is going to end up being a Chief. Crabtree is a risk with the foot injury. Curry is an exciting pick, but if he is gone, grab Smith.

  • March 28, 2009  - ArrowheadHawk says:

    How about this:
Detroit: Has sucked for so long they forfeit their first round pick!

St. Louis: Nobody really likes them anyway so they forfeit their pick as well!

KC: Cream of the crop pick and the first two also because we have extra cool points with our shiny new front office and extra sexy fan base!!

  • March 28, 2009  - Tribal Warfare says:

tradedown get the 2nd round pick back, and select Everett Brown

  • March 28, 2009  - Michael says:

Trade down if you can stay around mid-first round, and pick up a couple more picks or a couple good defensive vets.

Trade the pick to Carolina Panthers for DE Julius Peppers and the Panthers 2nd round pick. KC might need to add another 2010 pick in the deal.

Swap first rounders with Arizona for WR Boldin.
    Probably involve other picks.

Swap first rounders with Cinci for WR Johnson. Probably involve other picks or players.

Stay at No 3 pick-take LB Curry, OT Monroe, OT J. Smith or WR Crabtree. Preference for Curry, only because D needs most help.

Take Stafford or Sanchez. Deal Cassel to NY Jets, Bucs, Bears or 49ers for their first rounder. Take BPA.

Deal pick to Patriots for as many of their picks as you can get.

  • March 28, 2009  - swiss chief says:

Trade down,if not possible pick Curry

  • March 28, 2009  - Roger says:

My opinion is the same as before: trade down if possible. The Chiefs have too many needs to have only one selection in the first 2 rounds.

  • March 28, 2009  - Mario AKA BIG CHIEF says:

TRADE DOWN CHIEFS HAVE TO MANY NEEDS.LB DEPEND ON D-LINEMAN TO BE EFFECTIVE.CURRY WOULD HAVE TO BE LT OR DT WHICH HE IS NOT !!

OFFENSIVE LINE HAS BEEN NEGLECTED FOR YEARS, IT SEEMS PEOPLE CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF DRAFTING DEFENSIVE LINEMAN WHO CAN’T HELP US LIKE (BROWN & ORAKPO).
A GOOD O-LINEMAN AFFECTS EVERY PLAY AND OPENS DOORS FOR OTHERS
1)ANDRE SMITH,MONROE,OHER USE EXTRA PICKS ON A GUARD & TE JARED COOK SO.CAR OR CHASE KAUFMAN MU

  • March 28, 2009  - Jody says:

If there take Monroe in there. Trade down if not. Can’t get a trade take Everette Brown.

  • March 28, 2009  - Jody says:

Curry, a non-pass rushing LB is a waste especially in 3-4. He is NOT an impact player.

  • March 29, 2009  - Mike says:

Trade down and take best player available. Then they gain a pick (or two?) to replace the two traded to NE.

  • March 29, 2009  - Russ says:

I like Everett Brown with the first pick, from what I’ve seen, and not able to trade down to our advantage- Brown is it…

  • March 29, 2009  - Anonymous says:

You build a team threw the trenches. We have two young QBs who will need a chance to throw and a non existent running game. We need OL help. Period. Trade down if you can but if not take Monroe with the third pick and try to find a center with what you have.

    JB

  • March 29, 2009  - ObscureDave says:

Trade down. Too many holes to have the luxury of drafting a “top” pick. When we have a roster like the Steelers or Patriots we can afford a Curry.

  • March 29, 2009  - franzbot says:

Take curry. He’s the best available player.

  • March 29, 2009  - Fansince93 says:

Trade down. Deal the #3 overall pick for another team’s #1 (12th-16th pick) and #2 (44th-50th)to make up for the 2nd round pick dealt to the Patriots for Cassel.

We avoid having to pay the $$$ for the #3 pick and gain two high value rookies.

  • March 29, 2009  - aggrivated a-hole says:

dude if your as good as the pats and steelers youll never be at # 3 we need the best guy we can get this is a rare opportunity picking this high hopefully we wont be here for awhile

  • March 30, 2009  - Milt says:

Ideally. Trade down for a mid first and second and take Percy Harvin in first and best OL available in 2nd.

  • March 30, 2009  - Hendricks says:

trade down. then with that pick. trade down again and then with THAT pick i want them to select “trade down”. lots of needs and hopefully pioli and haley will know what to do with them(assuming they can get there hands on “trade down”

  • March 30, 2009  - Devildog 1976 says:

    OL,OL,OL,OL,OL!

The longer our off. in on the field with a run game the better off we will be. Wear down their def. with our off. We need more picks, so trade and get more choices. More is better, more competition. There are several good OL picks that can be had for less then a billion$$$. More is good. We have some weapons and we need bulldozers, OL,OL,OL,OL,OL.

It is all about the TEAM……….and……….

    THE RIGHT 53 2009

    In Pioloi I trust!!

  • March 30, 2009  - Anonymous says:

    1. Everette Brown or Connor Barwin
    2. Aaron Curry
    3. Michael Crabtree

  • March 30, 2009  - ReddArrowhead says:

Crabtree. Chiefs fans know nothing of how long it takes to build an NFL line on both sides of the ball. Crabtree is a stick-moving TD machine. Take him and keep building. You already have your “top OL pick” in LT Big Al.

  • March 30, 2009  - ED says:

Take Curry. We need help at linebacker and defensive end. Curry is the best player at either position. Take Curry or trade down unless you feel E.Brown,Maybin, or Orakpo is worthy because we do need defensive end help.

  • March 30, 2009  - ED says:

OR take Smith from Baylor, Monroe UVA or the Tackle from Ole MISS
