Wednesday Morning Cup O’Chiefs
The NFL trading deadline came and went and when the smoke cleared, two players were traded but the biggest name out there was not.
There’s been plenty written and said already about the Chiefs failure to deal TE Tony Gonzalez. Here’s one more tidbit on some of the offers the Chiefs received for Gonzalez: several teams were interested only if changes could be made to his contract, and only if Gonzalez would agree to play more than one season with his new club.
Even at that, what they were offering did not rise to the level of what the Chiefs were asking.
Which I know confuses some fans because they see what Detroit got for WR Roy Williams (left) in a deal with Dallas. The Lions will receive the Cowboys first, third and sixth-round draft choices in 2009. Detroit also sent its seventh-round pick next year to Dallas.
Why couldn’t the Chiefs get that for Gonzalez, who while older is certainly better than Williams has been in five seasons in the league?
They might have, if Jerry Jones was looking for a tight end. But the Cowboys owner wasn’t trolling for a tight receiver because he has one of the league’s best in Jason Witten. But it brings up the most important factor in any trade, no matter the business: deals get done when both parties are highly motivated and interested in getting something done.
Why did Jones want Williams so badly that he would gut his ‘09 Draft? Because the Cowboys owner is putting all his eggs into this year’s basket; he’s building that huge new stadium out in Arlington and he’s got a lot of his own money tied up in the deal. To make it work, he has to sell luxury suites, club seats and assorted other premium seating. He needs to do that now, before the place opens.
That’s why he re-upped Terrell Owens for a big extension before the season. That’s’ why he went out and brought in Pacman Jones, although that did not cost him a lot in money. Good thing too with Pacman getting slapped with an indefinite suspension by the Commish on Tuesday.
Jones wants to get Williams in the house so that he’s up and running when Tony Romo comes back from his broken pinkie finger. The race in the NFC East figures to be competitive all season and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see both NFC wildcards come out of that division.
So Jerry Jones is giving up on the future for now. The Chiefs weren’t lucky enough to do something similar with Gonzalez.
And the other deal made yesterday? Buffalo sent former No. 1 pick DT John McCargo to Indianapolis for a fourth-round draft choice. McCargo was a first rounder in 2006 but has been a major disappointment for the Bills. The Colts have depth problems along their defensive line. Again, two parties motivated to get a deal done.
FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY
On October 15, 1967, the Chiefs lost 45-31 to the Chargers at the new San Diego Stadium. The Chargers jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 1-yard TD plunge by QB John Hadl and a 35-yard return on a fumble recovery by DB Speedy Duncan. Later, Duncan returned an interception 100 yards for a TD. WR Lance Alworth caught a pair of TD passes from Hadl and RB Dickie Post ran 67 yards for a score. The Chiefs got touchdowns on a 24-yard run by WR Otis Taylor, a 1-yard run by RB Mike Garrett, a 15-yard run by WR Frank Pitts and a 15-yard TD pass from QB Len Dawson to WR Chris Burford. Taylor ended up with nine catches for 134 yards.
On October 15, 1989, the Chiefs lost to the Raiders 20-14 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Touchdown runs by Raiders RB Bo Jackson of 2 yards and Vance Mueller of 6 yards, along with a pair of Jeff Jaeger field goals gave the Raiders the victory. The Chiefs TDs came on a 1-yard run by RB Christian Okoye and an 11-yard pass from QB Steve DeBerg to WR Robb Thomas. The Chiefs were minus-two in turnovers. Jackson finished with 85 yards rushing on 11 carries. There was a crowd of just 40,453 at the Coliseum.
OPPONENT NEXT/TENNESSEE TITANS
The week off has given the Titans banged up defensive line a chance to heal and they should all be ready to go this Sunday at Arrowhead.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Seattle still has quarterback problems as Matt Hasselbeck is out of Sunday’s game in Tampa Bay because of continuing problems with a bulging disc in his back.
Pittsburgh WR Hines Ward has been fined by the league for actions in a game where he was not penalized. It’s the second time it’s happened this year and Ward wants to know why.
AROUND THE AFC WEST
The Chargers were trying to make a trade deadline deal with the Raiders of all teams, before the trade fell apart.
While the natives are not impressed with JaMarcus Russell, the new head coach of the Raiders thinks he’s just having growing pains that any young quarterback must deal with .

I really wish the cap system was better. It doesn’t help get trades done. I know the Cards wanted Gonzo, but with all of the players that they need to re-sign, it was impossible to bring in Tony too, especially if he wasn’t positively staying for only one year.
If Gonzo refused to rework his deal, then he has take some of the blame for a deal not getting done. Funny he failed to mention that in his whine to Jay Glazer.
Just be glad we still have Gonzalez. Our WR corps isn’t good enough to shoulder the burden of Gonzalez’s lost production and Brad Cottam may not be ready to either. We don’t get the benefit of seeing Cottam in practice so maybe they know something about him that we don’t. I would like to see more of him, but not if it meant that Gonzalez got dealt.
Say what you will about Jerry Jones but that guy plays to win the Super Bowl every single season. He’ll get some picks back because he wheels and deals like a pro on draft day. The Cowboys already had an extra 3rd and 4th going into next years draft because of the moves Jones made in the most recent draft. So while they don’t have a 1st, they still have a 2nd, 3rd, and two 4ths. They can still bring in some nice talent on draft day. They set themselves up nicely to make a move like this. I know some folks don’t like the guy, but I wish our organization was run with that same kind of aggressiveness and foresight. I don’t like all the trouble makers Jones brings in per say, but I like that he’s always looking for ways to improve his club and gets it done in trades, free agency, and the draft. Our genius front office staff seems to think you can only do one of those things well at a time. I guess Herm and Carl can’t walk and chew gum at the same time either.
I agree that Jones is smart, but I don’t see the logic of the Roy Williams trade unless it’s a prelude to some other move that gets them what the Cowboys really need to win a Super Bowl: a better defensive backfield.
If what Adam G. said last night was true…that we were offered a 3rd & a player, I would’ve taken it, depending on the player.
I live in Dallas. The bottom line is Jerry Jones wants to win EVERY YEAR. He does what he believes it will take. Perhaps young lad Hunt could learn a few things – like growing some “stones”!
Tim,
How do you think the Williams deal helps Dallas? Is the idea to take defensive pressure off of TO?Have Austin, Crayton, Hurd, etc., really been that bad?
Bottom line to all this trade/no trade issue: The Chiefs will not be a viable franchise until there’s new leadership in the front office. If you want to protect Carl Peterson and tout his accomplishments, have at it.
I’m not one of those sipping the Peterson kool-aid. As an old coach once told a player, “Playing the game isn’t the same as seeing through the game.” I’ve more than seen through Carl Peterson’s act:
A GM rife with bad choices on issuing contracts, has a reputation around the league that others don’t want to deal with if given a choice, coupled with unmitigated gall and some mystical ability to pull the wool over the Hunts’ eyes, all suggest the KC Chiefs death train will continue to roll until someone or something derails the CP express.
IL,
They’ve (Cowboys) been trying to get somebody opposite TO. Craytons best productivity has been as a slot receiver. That’s how they primarily see him. All of that nothwithstanding, The key element is the mentality of Jerry Jones. If he can afford it, and he thinks he’ll get good return in helping him get back to the Bowl, he does it…there’s no bs with him. Certainly he misfires on occasion, but nobody can argue with his results. Since he’s been the owner, they’ve won multiple Super Bowls. Meanwhile we deal with Carl & Clark…and before that Steadman & Lamar. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Hunt family, but enough is enough with the blind loyalty. They’re afraid to make a move.
The other point most people seem to understand is that you have to have a legit QB in order to be anything other than a one year wonder a high percentage of the time. Carl, Marty, Herm, etc. have never been willing to get the PRIMARY piece to develop.
Herm referenced Fisher & TN. Guess what? The rebuild there wasn’t doing much until they drafted the QB & played him. Look at ATL. They drafted & are playing him, letting him go downfield, etc. Their approach to the rebuild was to not go so young all at once & get the PRIMARY piece in place.
I don’t believe Brodie has the LEADERSHIP qualites you need. His demeanor, mannerisms, etc. just don’t seem to be there.
Hey Tim,
***NEWSFLASH***
Every owner wants to win every year…BUT…
I understand what you are saying about Jerry, but the fact is the Cowboys have not won a playoff game since 1996 under Barry Switzer.
I’d also point out that the last time they won the Super Bowl, they won it after totally dismantling a team and REBUILDING through the draft.
Rich, one could argue the lack of ability on the Cowboy’s organization the last 12 years as well.
I agree with Jeff, and besides, the majority of the current Dallas team was built thru the draft by Parcels. Sure Jones is willing to gamble on players, but he misses more often than not. There are few owners willing to operate under the same parameters as Jones!
It’ll be interesting to see how this works out for the Cowboys. Certainly you want to constantly improve your team, but you usually work on improving your weaknesses (17th in passing defense), not your strengths (3rd in passing offense).
Still, they made a move. There are hordes of Philly fans this morning screaming about Cowboys getting Williams and the Eagles not getting Gonzalez.
The difference is not between Jones and carl, it is Jones and clark. The Dallas mentallity is win, I make enough money to build my own staduim, and I will make more money (and just a touch of to heck with the NFL what is best for Jones). The KC mentallity is take care of business (that translates into money for the hunt enterprises), take care of the NFL, then put a team on the field. That is not going to change because it is not how clark was raised.
Jones will make mistakes but it is just money and he believes he can make more. He will be in more superbowls, in trouble with the NFL, and in the media for what he says and does.
Clark will do none of those things. He will quietly sit at home, knowing money it coming to him. He will attend games and leave for home as soon as it is over. He will attend meeting and worry about adding an extra team to the playoffs or the amount of hair sticking out of helmets.
This is the lot of the KC fan. It cannot be changed. One day before we are gone, the chiefs will MOVE. It will be in the best interests of the business because that is what clark is all about, taking care of business.
I see Jerry Jones as being in the shadow of Al Davis of the Raiders, only doing what’s best for him and the Cowboys. While that in itself is great, it does nothing for the NFL as a whole. I see similarities to the Yankees in baseball. The only thing keeping us from going in that direction is the salary cap. Still in all I don’t see the logic in the Detroit trade as TO does not play well with others. Didn’t he write a book a few years back titled “Just give me the ball”. He has always seemed the selfish player where he wants the ball every play. Time will tell on that one.
Still a third round pick for Tony G. would have been good trade but would have sealed this year as a lost season. Seems Detroit is throwing in the towel for this year to get the number one pick in 2009. That sure doesn’t give the fans much to cheer about.
I’ll take the opportunity to go to the dance & see what happens as often as I can get it. Meanwhile, KC keeps thinking its a “Sadie Hawkins” affair.
Keep in mind Jerry Jones has been a primary player in increasing EVERY owner’s revenue in the tv negotiations. People have always loved to hate Dallas no matter what, and always will. Their efforts & committment to put themselves in a position to have an opportunity to go to the Super Bowl cannot be minimized.
KC could use a lot more of that mindset. I was born & raised in the KC area. The Chiefs have always been & always will be my favorite team. Its just a shame to see much of this happening needlessly.
llMerwin, It was Keyshawn Johnson that wrote the book your are referring to.
Tim, First and for most, I don’t know why we are discussing the cowBOYS on a Chiefs blog, but since it seems to be the topic today, I’ll comment on it.
Do you really want an owner that pulls all the S%!T that Jones has pulled (with the help of the Arlington City Council)Like using laws that were written over 100 yrs ago to claim eminent domain of peoples property, just so the greedy sorry POS can build a monument to himself?
And that wasn’t the beginning of this scam, first thing that happened was a plan was devised to lower property values in the area by way over stating crime statistics, letting the streets go unmaintained, putting ridiculous ordinances into effect. And thats just to mention a few of the scams that was run on the people of Arlington.
If thats what it takes to be considered a “good Owner” I’ll take my 9 & 7 Chiefs any day!
But I know it can be done without all the shenanigans that that PIG FORNICATOR Jones has pulled.
We (imo) are seeing the another chink in the armor of what J. Johnson built, and Jerry has been trying to duplicate since his departure.
So credit Jerry all you want but he ain’t cuttin it either.
Thanks JohnNdallas, my mistake, although both WR’s seem to be out of the same mold. I admired the Cowboys only when Jimmy was the coach but I still despise the owner. Being from central NY I would much rather have a team like the Patriots who just seem to win big without a lot of fanfare. They draft well and fill in the voids with good veterans at the top of their game, and who seem to fit well into their system. The coach may be the biggest lightening rod, like him or not he just seems to get results. Someday I would like to see the Chiefs become more like them then anybody else.
John,
Hey fool! I was asked to comment, if you took time to read the string you’d know that. I never commented on his stadium deal, you genius. The only discussion was regarding on the field. The people of Arlington voted on that deal. If they didn’t want it, Jerry wouldn’t have gotten it.
Your being satisfied with 9-7 (someday again) demonstrates why Carl is still here. Open your eyes. I never credited Jerry with everything either, you moron. I never said he was a “good” owner either. What I noted was a health respect for what he has accomplished since he took over which is far more in his time than many of his peers. Go back to doing whatever it was you were doing. You obviously can’t read, reason or interpret accurately.
Tim, I read just fine, thank you.
What I am reading right now is, that you are an arrogant little ass (much like your favorite owner) that gets much to defensive on the above mentioned.
LOOK FOOL! I didn’t say you agreed with or condoned any of Jerrys sorry ways, I was just making the point that if the Chiefs have to start pulling crap like that, I’ll stay at 9-7 you jackass!
Hey guy’s, settle down a bit, this is not the Star web site where the big draw is to insult the other bloggers. I think Bob would like everyone to have a different opinion, but to keep it polite and respectable. Now I agree Jerry Jones does get things done, for good or bad. I’m just not sure I agree with the way he has gotten things done in the time he has been an owner. It’s been more like George S. of the Yankees, what ever benefits the team and to heck with the rest of the league. That being said you can’t argue the fact that he does go out and get it done when he makes up his mind to do something. Still an all I would rather not have an owner like him or Al Davis running the Chiefs. There are other owners who have brought home the big one with out all the bad publicity.
John,
You began this moron. There was never a reference to any of the things you brought up by me. You brought them up merely bashing another team & owner in an effort to show your genius by injecting stuff not relevant to the discussion. References by me were to on the field product. You brought up the stadium, etc.
Its guys like you that when called out on the crap, can’t take it. Try reading the string in its entirety next time or at least draw the distiction.
Now can we get back to the Chiefs?
I didn’t start any thing MORON!
I used your name because you were the last one to use the cowBOYS as an example,in what ever you want to claim you were saying.
The first day of the draft is now only rounds 1 and 2, not 3. I believe Tony that Carl was offerred a 3rd rounder. Please correct
