Just a note, for a team that everyone thought didn't rush that great we ranked 16th overall in the NFL in rushing. Mediocre, but we allowed 158 yards a game and ended up 30th on rush yards allowed. If you look at overall offensive production we were 24th, the closest playoff team was only ranked 22nd, Pittsburgh, but they have the #1 overall defense. It looks like to me still that the most work is needed on defense. I really don't think were that far away on offense. I have a feeling that if we are successful next year it will probably be because of the offense carrying the team, again.

I'm not in with Rin Tin Tin, but the Chiefs nation needs to acknowledge that patching a few holes in the wall that was the Chiefs was not going to work, ala Peterson, Vermeil, etc. This team was not very good, and needed a total remodel. KC now has an idea of what it can build on and what it cannot. It has plenty of cap space, space that Vermeil, et al. would have burned up with guys who couldn't make it anywhere else. Give Herm credit for starting a process that was way, way overdue. He may not be a good coach to move forward, but he kept the team together during an extremely tough time. And now this team is ready to move forward, with a bunch of cap space to go after ascending players. Stop the hate on Herm. If we get the right people, this franchise is posed to take a big step forward in a weak division.

By the way, regards 'disect' didn't mean to infer you were a little insect ... or something of the same type. Dissect I did- the other 'buggy' tack is reserved for the parasite that follows you and imagines himself one of the disciples, but who in fact is merely another in a long line of pests who was exterminated by Rin afore in another blog.

Let us now disect your faux foistings:

"You like hali, herm moved him to replace allen so I guess he did not agree with you."

- you dislike Hali, Allen left so someone had to replace him... Tamba was the right choice at the time, so I guess you misread Herm's action.

"You decided Niswanger would be a good OG and again herm does not agree with you, he never lined up a a G all season long but youknow best."

- he lined up at OG last season- Herm thot he was good enough to replace the ineffective Welbourne. This season he replaced Weigmann because Rudy was the best C on the team. Again, you imagine Herm but instead see through the eyes of Helen Keller.

"You can compare Bowe to Taylor but you cannot prove it so go back to your cave on this one."

- game 3 1967: Otis Taylor drops a sure TD pass 4-5 yards behind HOF CB Willie Brown in the final 2 minutes of play: KC loses, OAK wins & goes to the Superbowl. Rin has just 'proven' it, and in doing so have proven you wrong...again - that's 3 times now, but we're not through yet.

"Thigpen developed. He was the highpoint of the season with what he accomplished. All that said he is terrible."

- enough to throw 18 tds to but 12 ints...that is 'not' terrible, that is for comparison sake FAR better than a Trent Green's 1stt season in KC, that produced 17 tds and 24 ints. Oh, by the way, Thigpen was a 1st time starter, Green had previous starting experience. You've now passed the silver sombrero and are well into a quartet of errancy.

"NO Accuracy, does not look off receivers and completes about 50% of passes. The team was so bad he looked great."

- offers mobility, a true running threat, and has the backing of a HOF TE Tony Gonzalez. Hmm let's see, should we side with ol' tm1946 or Gonzalez? Tough choiuce, but Rin will go with Tony G. You are now ofer 5...but then, who's counting.

"I already said the CBs were good but I guess you could not read the typed words."

- I decided to proffer as my heart leads me, as always; guess you get startled by added emphasis.
Now down 6-0.

"You give herm credit for hiring coaches?"

- there an echo in your head...did Rin stutter?
Seven down you be now, last chance ahead.

"Gunther cannot coach LB or Coor.Def Line coach is at least incompetant. Special team are bad. The offensive plays the novelity Spread and cannot run for 1 yard."

- those very coaches and all the rest had KC in position to win no less than another nine games this season, but, and this will come as a shock to you as such, as any astute football fan knows players make plays and coaches coach.

"Yeah, let us give herm all the credit for the coaches."

- Rin just did...close the door behind you as you exit- and do watch so that your tail isn't caught therein.

"the def line absolutely chock full of herms high draft picks are developing anything other than diaper rash??"

- Hali had two good seasons before this one ... and when not battling injuries is a decent DE, as he's proved afore. Dorsey? He was a rookie and was assigned to take up blockers, not rush the passer per se... McBride was in his 1st season starting & ended up being injured thus missing alot of the year; too, he was bounced between LE, then RE. Tyler was KC's best defensive lineman all considered, and as a 3rd round choice run stopper not known as a pass rusher. Scheme and inexperience are the truer culprits.

"Our center is getting knocked on his rear so that the only thing he is developing is a callus on his can."

- lack of talent for the position. I recall a guy labeled a bust as an OG who was traded to Kaycee by DEN and became a star DT here ... Curley Culp. Niswanger is better suited to OG but will never be a star, probably why he was undrafted, so no surprise there either.

"Bowe had a good season but is he the guy you want at a critical monent, I do not think so."

- Otis Taylor was still dropping passes fairly regularly in his third season, 1967. Was that Stram's fault or Taylor's?

"Developing talent may be herms greatest fault."

- really? Thigpen developed this season. Charles came along nicely. Flowers, Carr & FA find Deion Leggett seemed like Godsends but, lemme guess... Herm had nothing to do with any of them...it was the other coaches, in all cases. Yup, that must be it.

Excuses? No, rather facts. Too, who hired those coaches? Yup, Herm.

- lack of talent for the position. I recall a guy labeled a bust as an OG who was traded to Kaycee by DEN and became a star DT here … Curley Culp. Niswanger is better suited to OG but will never be a star, probably why he was undrafted, so no surprise there either.

“Bowe had a good season but is he the guy you want at a critical monent, I do not think so.”

- Otis Taylor was still dropping passes fairly regularly in his third season, 1967. Was that Stram’s fault or Taylor’s?

“Developing talent may be herms greatest fault.”

- really? Thigpen developed this season. Charles came along nicely. Flowers, Carr & FA find Deion Leggett seemed like Godsends but, lemme guess… Herm had nothing to do with any of them…it was the other coaches, in all cases. Yup, that must be it.

Excuses? No, rather facts. Too, who hired those coaches? Yup, Herm.

Big Lee, you think herm develops players?? I do not equate playing with developing. CBs ok but do you feel the def line absolutely chock full of herms high draft picks are developing anything other than diaper rash?? Our center is getting knocked on his rear so that the only thing he is developing is a callus on his can. Bowe had a good season but is he the guy you want at a critical monent, I do not think so.
Somewhere way back at the start of this list someone mentioned slow downloads. I am having the same problem.

IF Herm could manage game-day decisions, I'd be all for bringing him back. He develops young guys, the total opposite of Vermeil, Stram, etc.

But when these guys become competitive, Herm will still be appealling ref's calls at the wrong time, calling screwy timeouts, etc. Herm would be a great position coach, especially secondary, but he's not a Head Coach. With quick turnarounds Fins and Ravens made, I'm not sure anyone is going to keep a developmental coach around.

Rin has seen them all...I still have EVERY home KC Chiefs program from 1963 through 1971 and as well the ticket stubs, and too most of the away programs from that same period. I have seen the best and worst football in Chiefs history. Rin stopped collecting those things aft Kaycee left Municipal Stadium for Arrowhead because I never did and still don't enjoy the latter as much as the former.

In fact, Bobby Bell amongst other former Chiefs players stated he felt things changed when the move happened, a less intimate environ between fans & players, who were no longer as close to the field as they had been at Municipal. Stram also mentioned how things went too 'corporate' nee big business...course he too got the dual titles (like a Shanahan had in DEN) which led directly or indirectly to Hank's demise.

I concur with Bell & Stram; the fact KC hasn't been worth a s**t since 1971 really is an odd coincidence too...or is it?

Ah well, wait till next millennium!

I would settle for Trent Green, Willie Roaf and Priest Holmes. They were a lot of fun to watch playing together. I am not experienced enough to have seen the heyday, man that must be hard to wait that long between championships. In fact the first time I started paying attention Montana was our QB!

All Rin wants for a Happy New Year is Len Dawson, Otis Taylor, Pitts, Tyrer, Budde, Hill, Arbanas, Garrett, Holmes, Hayes, Holub, Jan Stenerud and Jerrel Wilson.

Oh, and Bobby Bell, Lanier, Buchanan, Robinson, E. Thomas, Mays, Culp, Lynch, Kearney, Marsalis and Brown.

And Hank Stram. And Lamar Hunt. And the way things used to be. And another Championship!

Hey Jim sorry I missed your question, but in my humble opinion coaches would have to be the best judge of talent especially after being in the league so long. Then on the other hand fresh ideas seem to be working quite well in the NFL. The other most important thing is finding players that truly love the game, like Tony G. I think that's a big problem nowadays is finding players with integrity that are not just looking for a paycheck. Remember they may have went 2-14 and I am sure that's hard to handle but they are all millionaires or close to it. That should make it a little easier on them, heck I know if I had a couple mill Id feel a lot better.

I hope everyone has a good new year eve and good 2009.

I still do not understand what herm has done to get so many to want him to practice HCing for another year. But what the heck, I am not renewing my tickets anyway, so I will get over it.

It will be interesting to see what defensive coaches are retained (assuming herm stays). I also think they should look closely at the offensive side because I doubt the spread is a full time offense for the NFL.

As for the draft, the chiefs need at least 4 new starters, could happen.

Ed, I wasn't suggesting Shanahan should be the next GM, just wondering if Hunt might lean that way. The best way into the playoffs is to win your division. Shanahan has an intimate knowledge of what that takes. That might make him a candidate in Hunt's eyes(not mine). As close as Bowlen and Shanahan are, the whole scenario seems surreal to me. I can't help wondering if Shanahan has other job offers (KC GM being one possibility)he would like to pursue and Bowlen cut him loose so he could.

The adulation line mine forms to the right...not that Rin cares but, alas, there be 'so many' who (obviously) do, herein... talent does as it can, mine genius as it must. The story becomes more about Rin than the other Man, Herm.
Shanahan does impress on some levels, but as a talent evaluator overall as a whole...no. Rin would not be hurt if a Mike Shanahan were KCs next coach though it would come as a surprise.

Reporter John Clayton said today he didn't see that happening, but then, as with every other person's opinion this board as in the media, no one has the market on informed insight any more than the rest.

Shanhan's offense is and would be offset by his stunning defense...he's Dick Vermeil part deux.

Man please no one suggest Shanahan as the GM for the last time its why the guy got fired. HECK NO we don't want him as KC GM. He produced more bust in KC than Peterson produced the last 10years. Shanahan is a great head coach but its his lack of building a strong personel in Denver that got him fired it the 9 years for him to finally have a good draft which was this year.

"Hey Rin I did vote for Obama"

"it's very refreshing to have incoming president that has common sense and has a brain not like the one who is leaving."

- when will he arrive do you think? 2013? 2018?

"But anyway keep hoping Snoopy uh I mean Rin keep bringing the support to your buddy Herm."

- guess the fact Rin embraces Herm but shuns the great overhype O'Cedar- er, Obama means that Rin can't be racist as a confused dr once charged... huh.

So, with the Shanahan firing, any possibility he winds up as KC's GM? As a judge of talent, especially at RB, he seems as good or better than any in the AFC West. Opinions?

Tom Landry - the first five years:

0-11-1 / 4-9-1 / 5-8-1 / 4-10-0 / 5-8-1 / 7-7-0 / Landry didn't even have a winning season - hist first - until his 7TH year in Dallas.

Notice too how it was not a steady progress atall but rather a break-in season - like Herm's 2008 -0-11-1. This then followed by a better year, but the next essentially treading water with only one more win, then the next season- Landry's 4th - he regressed to LESS wins than the year before.

Them stupid Cowboys/owner...they should have fired Tommy Boy then, immediately...huh.

See you back as Chiefs Head Coach in 2009 Herm!

Anonymous says:

"So Rin"
- yes knave, what is it now?

"if Herm is gone what will you do? Will you support the new head coach ? Will you go into hiding after the axe has fallen ?"

- Rin has alreadt stated afore what he will do...try playing more attention to what is written and stop admiring all those pretty pictures Rin paints with his verbiage.

Rin is/has always been about what's best for the Chiefs...as a fan since '63 I've no choice beyond renouncing my fandom. What's best for the Chiefs however, is open to debate. As it has now been some 40 years lost wandering in the wilderness, who to blame? Certainly not "The Man!" who just finished his 3rd season & took KC to the playoffs in his first- which Vermeil could not do his last in 2005.

"Because"

- because I'm telling you to...now don't make me come down to your level and rap you one.

"has Herm has always said too many times"

- what? You speak with focked tongue...

"At the end of the day!"

- no, pretty much always, appears...

"When Herm is gone away the Chiefs will be okay"

- will they? No Superbowls in the last 40 years, and just like that everytrhing will be cured huh? You must have voted for Obama... we'll leave the lights on for you.

"and Rin"

- yes, what is it now Sherman?

"there is nothing more for you to say."

- good, we've consensus then...you're going to try and improve your limited purview via some copious reading of Rin, Bob & like sages.

"I have a song for you"

- is it going to entail you bending over & making more wind sounds again, or just with your armpit this time?

"and"

- yes?

"Herm"

- Edwards is The Man!

"NAH! NAH! NAH! NAH !NAH !HEY! HEY ! GOODBYE!"

- do you also know that old standby "Far, Far Away"? A few more bars played via your 'wind' chime instrument would be great- if played at a proper distance...

Herm Edwards - KC Chiefs Head Coach in 2009 and beyond!

:-)

Anonymous says:

“So Rin”
- yes knave, what is it now?

“if Herm is gone what will you do? Will you support the new head coach ? Will you go into hiding after the axe has fallen ?”

- Rin has alreadt stated afore what he will do…try playing more attention to what is written and stop admiring all those pretty pictures Rin paints with his verbiage.

Rin is/has always been about what’s best for the Chiefs…as a fan since ’63 I’ve no choice beyond renouncing my fandom. What’s best for the Chiefs however, is open to debate. As it has now been some 40 years lost wandering in the wilderness, who to blame? Certainly not “The Man!” who just finished his 3rd season & took KC to the playoffs in his first- which Vermeil could not do his last in 2005.

“Because”

- because I’m telling you to…now don’t make me come down to your level and rap you one.

“has Herm has always said too many times”

- what? You speak with focked tongue…

“At the end of the day!”

- no, pretty much always, appears…

“When Herm is gone away the Chiefs will be okay”

- will they? No Superbowls in the last 40 years, and just like that everytrhing will be cured huh? You must have voted for Obama… we’ll leave the lights on for you.

“and Rin”

- yes, what is it now Sherman?

“there is nothing more for you to say.”

- good, we’ve consensus then…you’re going to try and improve your limited purview via some copious reading of Rin, Bob & like sages.

“I have a song for you”

- is it going to entail you bending over & making more wind sounds again, or just with your armpit this time?

“and”

- yes?

“Herm”

Wow Rin Ive never seen your writings make so much sense and actually make you look like a Chiefs fan. I think we all want the same thing and if Herm can do it I am all on board. He obviously needs a GM that will work with him better. Rin, You obviously have a lot of knowledge and experience being a football fan. Look at Jeff Fisher, he may be on the verge of a second SB appearance and he is the longest tenured coach in the NFL now, and a couple of years ago they were bad. The only reason I know that is because Bob G. explained that earlier in the year when everybody started freakin out about the losing. Please Clark make a wise decision.

Paul Brown...in 21 NFL years he was successfull just 3 times (he won 4 AAFC Championships in as many years but again as AFL v NFL the twain did not meet so he cannot ultimately get credit for Championships as such.) His final 15 season were a failure...yet, was given the OK sign to go on failing.

Patience is a virtue...Herm Edwards deserves at least another. And if he wins in 2009? A 5-year contract extension!

George Halas - six winners... in 40/four-o/forty years. That's twice as long as Carl Peterson was in Kaycee for reference.

One other mention: Stram actually won twice in his eight years if we include '62 Championship - which we must for as the NFL Champion did not play the AFL same, neither can truly claim to have been ultimate champ (ditto through the '65 season.)

Those '62 Texans/Chiefs would not have likely beaten the '62 Packers my opine but the '63 Chargers would've smoked the '63 Bears.

Herm has taken his teams to the playoffs 50% of the time, 4 years out of 8 - that's better than Tom Landry's first 8 - he made it just twice.

- Stram made it only twice his first eight years.
- Shula made it only three times his first eight.
- Madden's subpar post season record? 5-6 before he finally 'won' - once - he finished 9-7 career post season - barely above mediocre, and it took him all of 10 years in the same place to do it.

Don't you just hate it when Rin doth point out the facts & leaves the Herm haters quivering in their faux foisted fallacies?

People are always envious of what the other guy has...as the intellect & insight a Rin compared to the empty snack packers blogging herein.

Too, as the flavor of the moment coaches who get an extra step or couple of paces e'en beyond the other Peter Principled ilk same - nontheless, in unison do they come crashing down to level also-ran same in the end.

That is to say that a Madden won just once in 10 years...a Cowher even less success, winning just one time in 15 years...even a Stram just once in 17 years. A Schottenheimer? The Champion of kiss your sister? These are GREAT coaches...really?

Let us be clear as to 'greatness': it is spelled L-O-M-B-A-R-D-I - he is the epitome nee the ONLY spelling that be sacrosanct.

In 9 years coaching Green Bay's Packers Lombardi won 5 Championships, played in a 6th, and failed to place only twice. 'That' is success.

A Belichick? In 14 years, he's failed 11 seasons, which is better than most of the rest but still fools gold as to any comparison with a LOMBARDI.

As for the rest mentioned afore, the Maddens and Cowhers and Schottenheimers and Strams - indeed, even a Shula who, was a FAILURE 31 years of his 33 total as Head Coach, Tom Landry a failure 28 of his 29 years. Marvy Levy? Ofer 18. Shanahan, the newest unemployed wunderkind? Two successes in parts of 16 seasons.

What is the one common denominator amongst all of them? They ALL got AMPLE TIME - none less than a decade of head coaching in the same city despite the fact many couldn't win anything at all until the very end of their tenure. Even when they did win earlier (a Shanahan) and wobbled for the next decade until their being yanked out by the neck, they were given the opportunity to fail by their owners.

So, the old adage applies: many runners run but only one can & will win; for reference purposes, Herm Edwards just finished his 3rd season in KC, and in reality but season one - a rebuild.

See you back as KC Chiefs Head Coach in 2009 Herm - keep up the great work!

Great observation Josh. Your comments are very true. Plus he cannot pick good assistants. Dick Curl is just awful. And the league has caught up to cover 2 defense which does not work with no pass rush.

Time to move on.

Did you see the Shanahan press conference? Compare that to Carl leaving. In the end both men move on due to lack of success. ( Denver won 2 Superbowls) Shanahan handled it with class...so far Carl not so much. Does it matter? Yes...it reflects on the team and who would want to come to the Chiefs.

9-7 Playoff Loss, 4-12 Tied with the Raiders, 2-14 Worst record in franchise history. That's moving backwards and that isn't necessary in this league. There is no evidence that Herm can coach young players well. Look at promising players like Tamba Hali and Derek Johnson completely fall apart under Herm's watch. I like Herm Edwards, I really do, I like his ties to the team, I like his philosophy, and I think he has an eye for talent, but I don't think he's a head coach. Herm needs to go, maybe have a place in the scouting department, but we need a new face for this team to get behind.

I'm behind Herm too! We really don't need to get a new system in here. He is a good coach for these young guys. Whether he has the game managing skills to win us the bowl is still in doubt in my mind. But he has the skills to coach these guys up and then hopefully we will be good enough that the poor timing of timeouts won't even matter. I mean he does have a contract. That seems to be forgotten these days. Honoring a contract. You have my support for 09 Herm! Please don't make me look like a dumbass!

McKay could be a fit for the Chiefs. I think you might see Hunt go for a more low key personality. I would not be against it. He is smart and has been effective.

The titans aren't going to let Haynesworth walk... plus he had a good season, usually happens in a contract year and he had a clause in his contract that stated if he made the pro-bowl the team couldn't throw the franchise tag on him again this year...

Im glad to see the Broncos will be without leader next year, the chiefs have a chance as long as they stick with the plan, a couple free agent pick-ups, a good draft and KEEP HERM AS COACH. They will be Division champs this year...

I'm fine with Pioli. And I don't know if Haynesworth would be worth all the money he's going to get.
