Wednesday 1/5 Practice Report-Update

From the Truman Sports Complex

Illness kept two Pro Bowlers from the practice field Wednesday as the Chiefs began their preparation week for Sunday’s game in the first-round of the AFC playoffs against Baltimore.

Head coach Todd Haley said that both LG Brian Waters and WR Dwayne Bowe were absent because of illness. They were not on the field during the open period of practice and were not in the locker room after practice was over. Haley provided no timetable on how long either one would be out. “I just go by today and today they were not able to go,” Haley said.

Waters and Bowe were the only players missing from the field, as newly signed WR Kevin Curtis was taking part in the work. He was wearing No. 17.

“I’m approaching this to do what they ask me to do,” said Curtis, who missed all but two weeks of the 2010 season as he recovered from surgery for testicular cancer. “I’m here to learn, to get in the playbook and if called upon be ready to go.”

Haley said he’d never been around Curtis, but had spoken to coaches and players who had been and they had nothing but good things to say about the 6-0, 186-pound Utah native who has played 81 games in the league for the Rams, Eagles and Dolphins.

“He’s a veteran receiver that we wanted to look at,” Haley said. “It’s part of our efforts to always be trying to create competition. He knows the system; they run a similar one down in Miami with Coach (Dan) Henning with similar terminology. That will give him a chance to get in and get in the mix.

“He’s got some mileage on the tires, but it looks like he’s done a great job of keeping himself in shape.”

Curtis has caught 253 passes for 3,297 yards and 20 TDs. He spent two weeks with the Dolphins, catching one pass for six yards.

“I”m excited about being here and it’s fortunate for me to be joining a team that’s on a roll with winning a division and having a home game in the playoffs,” Curtis said.

Also on the field was practice squad TE Cody Slate, who was also signed on Wednesday. The Chiefs had an open spot on their practice squad. Slate was with the team in training camp but was released on August 29.

Talking about jersey numbers – which number does Micah Johnson wear? The mothership obviously is unable to update the roster …

hmmm, I think it would be very interesting that we signed Curtis the same day that Bowe wasnt at practice, but having Waters not there as well puts that at ease alittle. Im sure there is good reason and they will be at work soon and playing on Sunday, atleast they better be!!

The Chiefs have been very lucky in regard to injuries all year. Hope it does not bite us in the rear for sunday. (for those who believe in lucky, destiny, and momentium)

Any word on Waters & Bowe, other than “illness”? Yeah, and what is Micah Johnson’s number?

Guys,I’ve said this in other posts, but I really like him. At about 6’4″ and 255 he could be a decent addition to our LB corps and ST. I know from watching him at KY that he loves to hit, and he’s usually in a pretty bad mood when he gets to the football.

I think it would be easier to get launch codes from the Pentagon than straightforward news out of the Pioli/Haley lockdown. The right to know this latest complete information on Bowe/Waters is obviously on need to know and the rest of us didn’t make the cut.

    There it is.

BOB; Could you try to find out how serious is the illness that Bowe and Waters have???? This really concerns me as we NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK for this upcoming sunday. Also can you tell me BOB if you are excited about Kevin Curtis or is he just another Chris Chambers???? In other words he just gets 2 looks per game.
