Waiver Claim – OT or TE?

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs claimed OT Steve Mareni on waivers from the Patriots on Monday.

The move gave the team eight offensive linemen on the active roster. But they only have a pair of tight ends, with veteran Anthony Becht released on Monday to make a roster spot available for Mareni.

But are the Chiefs short on tight ends now? Did they add another offensive lineman?

Mareni is a converted tight end, who played the position at Temple University for four years (2006-09). He did not become an offensive tackle until he was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Houston Texas in 2010.

Since then, with the Texans and the Patriots, who claimed him on waivers a year ago, Mareni has been adding weight. In high school, where he was a basketball player at Saddle Brook High School, New Jersey, he didn’t play football until his senior season, when he caught 36 passes for 607 yards and 5 TD catches. At the time he weighed 225 pounds.

At Temple, he went up from 245 pounds, to 258, to 268 and finally he was 275 as a senior. Right now, after two seasons in the NFL, he’s listed at 290 pounds.

With the Owls, he played in 47 games, catching 37 passes for 400 yards and 9 TD catches. His best season was 2008, when he caught 14 passes for 150 yards and 4 scores.

Maybe they plan to use Mareni as a TE or just line him up at tackle as an eligible receiver.

I read that he started and played a complete preseason game this season for the Patriots (didn’t say which game) but that he has improved quite a lot and was playing very well at OT.

Also gives us a guy that can be tackle eligable or line up as a TE at the goal line.

I’ve read that some Patriots fans aren’t happy, they got Waters with one or two seasons left and we may have gotten a OT with his entire career ahead of him as a starter.
