Ugoh leaves camp, apparently to retire

From St. Joseph, Missouri

The Chiefs late attempt to find experienced depth for their offensive line blew up on Monday when OT Tony Ugoh left the Missouri Western State University campus with plans to retire from the game.

Ugoh took part in the team’s walkthrough practice on Monday morning, but with the second padded practice of the camp coming up that afternoon, he pulled the plug and left town after talking with Chiefs officials. No word from them on his departure.

The 5-year NFL veteran was signed just as the Chiefs were opening camp, although he’d been on the free agent market since March. With 40 games of NFL experience, he was the only backup offensive lineman on the team’s roster with any actual NFL game experience. In the practices, he didn’t appear to be overmatched except for a session Sunday when he had to handle several Tamba Hali pass rushes.

He arrived in St. Joseph with his family and they were at the team’s first practice on Friday.

“People don’t realize how hard it is to bounce around from team to team,’’ said Chiefs RT Eric Winston, “It’s tough on families. There are a lot of things going on in people’s lives. You don’t know what’s going on. Guys sometimes lose interest. I respect him for backing away more so than anything. There are a lot of guys trying to fake it and pick up another paycheck. The thing about this game is it’s hard to fake it, and I think he knew that. He was just ready to move on.’’

Ugoh was a former second-round draft choice of the Colts, but last played in 2011 with the New York Giants, when he was with them during their Super Bowl run.

He was positioned as a backup, Pioli will have to beat the bushes for another.

Retire? Hell, he hasn’t done anything yet. Talk about a high draft pick go bust. Percy Snow, you have company.

That’s a shame, a young vet with starting experience was just what the Chiefs needed for an OL backup. There are more vets out there to sign, and the team could actually use two of them; so let’s hope Pioli gets it done.

Clearly no fire in his belly anymore. One wonders if there ever was a great deal of it…

The difference between Ugoh and today’s pro golfers is when Ugoh got his SB ring he lost the fire and retired. Pro golfers win one Major, lose their fire and keep playing for top 20 paychecks.
