“If winning isn’t everything, why do they keep score?”

- Hall Of Fame Coach Vince Lombardi -

Tuesday Morning Cup O’Chiefs

The As The World Turns soap opera that is the Dallas Cowboys had quite a Sunday and Monday.

To put together just a light review of the script, the Cowboys came from behind and got a field goal against Arizona to send the game into overtime. Dallas won the toss, but they are without one of their important weapons, rookie RB Felix Jones, out with a hamstring pull. On the first play, Tony Romo got knocked down and fumbles. Romo recovered the ball, but two more offensive plays produced nothing and punter Mat McBriar came in to kick the ball away.

That’s when Arizona’s Sean Morey blocked the punt. It was recovered by former Chiefs LB Monte Beisel who tumbled into the end zone to become the first man to win an NFL game with a blocked punt returned for a TD.

So the Cowboys lost in heartbreaking fashion. And, body breaking fashion. They also lost their starting quarterback for four to five weeks as Romo broke the pinky on his right passing hand on that first play in overtime. They lost punter McBriar for what’s likely to be the rest of the season with a fractured right foot that came on the blocked punt. Jones is out for at least two weeks with his hamstring. Dallas was already hurting without CB Terence Newman and S Roy Williams, both missing multiple games with injuries.

And did I mention that Pacman Jones is waiting to hear if he’s going to be suspended by the NFL for his hotel bathroom altercation with his bodyguard.

Yes, things are going crazy in Jerry Jones’ world. Serenity now!

Oh and Monday was birthday No. 66 for Jerry.

Romo’s injury brings Brad Johnson  (above) back onto the field. The 40-year old Johnson is a 17-year NFL veteran. He has a 71-51 career record as a starting quarterback and led Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl victory six years ago.

“The system is already in place,” Johnson said on Monday. “We’ll run about 90 percent of the plays we’ve been running. When I’ve had suggestions in the past, it’s always been what is best for Tony, with Jason (Garrett, Dallas offensive coordinator.) Now obviously it will be Jason and I working together. It may be some things that I like a little better for me, compared to maybe what was best for Tony.”

Or what’s best for Terrell Owens or Pacman Jones, the real stars of the Dallas soap opera. Now 3-3 on the season, things are not going well for the Cowboys and veteran defensive end Greg Ellis wasn’t keeping his mouth shut.

“I’m just disappointed in this organization right now,” said the 11-year veteran. “Things just aren’t going real good. To me, we’re not maximizing what we have. I don’t say that to start controversy. I pray that guys who hear me say this, the coaches on the staff, everybody, realize that I just feel like we can do better as a whole Dallas Cowboys organization.”

FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY

On October 14, 1973, the Chiefs tied the Packers 10-10 at Milwaukee County Stadium. This defensive struggle saw the Chiefs manage just 149 yards of total offense. The only KC score was an 8-yard TD pass from QB Len Dawson to TE Morris Stroud. For the Packers, the offense was led by RB John Brockington, who finished the game with 106 yards on 15 carries. Both CB Nate Allen and LB Bobby Bell had interceptions for the Chiefs.

On October 14, 1990, the Chiefs beat the Detroit Lions 43-24 at Arrowhead Stadium. While Nick Lowery scored the first points with a 21-yard FG, the Lions had the first touchdowns, both coming from RB Barry Sanders. Making his only regular season appearance in Arrowhead, Sanders caught a 47-yard TD pass from QB Bob Gagliano, a former Chiefs draft choice. Sanders then scored on a 13-yard run. But from that point the Chiefs caught fire as RBs Christian Okoye and Barry Word both had a pair of TD runs. TE Jonathan Hayes caught a 1-yard TD pass from QB Steve DeBerg. Word finished the game with what was then a club record 200 yards rushing on 18 carries, while Okoye had 23 carries for 91 yards. Sanders finished with 16 runs for 90 yards and five catches for 135 yards.

OPPONENT NEXT/TENNESSEE TITANS

Titans coach Jeff Fisher say they have enough info to get prepared for Brodie Croyle, even though the Chiefs quarterback has been out for five weeks.

In Nashville, they known that as DT Albert Haynesworth goes, so goes the Titans.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Over the weekend, Indy QB Peyton Manning revealed he had two different surgeries on his knee in the weeks before the start of the ’08 season.

Speaking of Mannings, check out Eli’s new pad in New Jersey, where everything is automated.

AROUND THE AFC WEST

Up in Denver, they are crying about some of the officiating they got in their loss to Jacksonville.  No really, the Broncos are complaining about the zebras.  Amazing.

The Chargers  have  very little time to enjoy their Sunday night victory over New England.  They travel this weekend to Buffalo and then off to England to play New Orleans.

The folks in the Bay Area are not happy with what they’ve seen from Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell.

With the Newman being out for a while and Jones possibly suspended, I would think that the Cowboys could be interested in Patrick Surtain. A 6th round pick that could escalate to a 5th would be a good deal for the Chiefs.

    Fire Sale!

  • October 14, 2008  - Rich says:

In terms of trades at the deadline today, I think the comments voiced by the NFL-N’s Michael Lombardi are most telling:
    (paraphrased somewhat)

“Having worked in the league in a front office capacity in the past, I can tell you that KC is not the easiest team to deal with in any form, including trades.”

    Bob,

why did the chiefs bring back the Rufus ‘dufus’ dawes columns back? Didnt they realize the 1st time around that its an insult to football fans?

    Bob,

any comment on the assault charges filed against LJ? Doesnt this start sounding like a pattern with him? It seems he is more interested in being in the club (like pacman) than doing the things to make himself a better runningback (such as working on pass blocking).

I just can’t believe that the Chiefs would have anybody writing like Rufus Dawes. His views are always centered around two following views. “The fans are stupid”, or “The media is unfair and too harsh.”

It’s kind of like a major corporation hiring a marketing person to write things that disparage the stockholders. Why would any company do that? What good is it to say that fans are stupid? It creates bitterness towards the organization that you’re trying to get people to literally buy into.

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

Hey findthedr, where did you hear that?

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

sorry, hear about the assault charges.

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

I found it findthedr. If he did something back in February, why is she just now taking him to court? Kinda fishy to me.

  • October 14, 2008  - DWChiefs says:

Regarding Rufus Dawes…..from my experience listening to comments and reading them online…I would have to agree that it sure seems like most fans ARE clueless. Although, it seems like Bob’s site has far fewer idiot postings than the KC Star, and others.

Tony Romo is a weenie. I remember Steve DeBerg playing nearly a whole season with a gi-nourmous cast on his throwing pinkie.

  • October 14, 2008  - Josh says:

DeBerg was the man in that since, whatever happened to football players being tough?

    – Eagles Eyeing Tony Gonzalez –
    Tue Oct 14, 2008 –from FFMastermind.com

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the NFL trade deadline is 4 p.m. today, and a league source said the Eagles were one of the teams that had been contacted by the Chiefs concerning TE Tony Gonzalez. HC Andy Reid did not specifically address the Gonzalez situation, but did not dismiss the idea that the Eagles would try to do something. “We’ll see,” the coach said. “We are keeping our eyes open on some things and we’ll see how it works out. In years past, not a lot happens at this time. There’s a lot of talk and usually not a lot of action, but we’ll see. We’re looking and communicating on a couple of things.” Gonzalez is on record as saying that he wants to be traded to a Super Bowl contender, and that the defending champion Giants are the “most attractive” team, according to Foxsports.com. The Packers and Bills are also reportedly interested in the nine-time Pro Bowler. Eagles TE L.J. Smith has just 10 catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns through six games. He is 27th in the league in receiving yards among tight ends. The combined production of Smith and TE Brent Celek is 16 catches for 132 yards.

    – Sinorice Moss for Tony Gonzalez? –
    Tue Oct 14, 2008 –from FFMastermind.com

The Star Ledger reports Giants WR Sinorice Moss caught his first two career touchdowns against the Seahawks last Sunday. And Monday night, he rested. Moss, the Giants’ third-year wide receiver, was inactive for the game against the Browns. Rookie WR Mario Manningham was dressed in Moss’ place. It’s the third time Moss has been a healthy scratch this year, so what’s the big deal? Well, the trading deadline is Tuesday. So did the Giants have a trade worked out for Moss and did they want to make sure he didn’t injure himself? Perhaps they had a trade worked out with the Chiefs for TE Tony Gonzalez? If they did, GM Jerry Reese wasn’t talking. “No comment,” Reese said at first before adding: “We investigate everything. You guys know that.” The Giants’ interest in Gonzalez appears to be mild at best. It seems they’d be willing to take him at a bargain price (reports are they’ve offered a sixth-round pick while Kansas City is looking for a first-day pick) but won’t make a big push for him. After all, they didn’t trade one pass-catching tight end (Jeremy Shockey) only to add another one who isn’t as good of a blocker. As for Moss, he’s been the subject of trade rumors for months and nothing has come close to materializing. The Giants also remain confident Moss will be a key contributor to their offense in the future, which might also make a trade unlikely.

  • October 14, 2008  - Colby says:

There you go guys. This is the best Gonzalez stuff I could find. Guess we’ll have to wait and see if Carl can make a move. Also, I can’t find anything on LJ, Surtain, or any of our other veteran guys out there as far as trade rumors go. This may prove to be a much more quiet Tuesday than we thought.

  • October 14, 2008  - tmessina says:

Glad Rufus Dawes is back. He (she) is about as close any of us will get to see inside the chiefs organization. If he says the fans are stupid, guess what?, the chiefs probably do feel that way. Always read his writeups otherwise you can go through life like the rah rah, just three more year to the superbowl guys. They are good fans with a great opinion of the future of the chiefs even if there is not one fact that supports this view. Dawes will always give you a peak into what the chiefs really think. Personnally I think he is a major PR blunder but this organization thrives on blunders.

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

Johnson faces a December date in Kansas City Municipal Court on a charge of simple assault. The municipal violation, filed early last month, stemmed from an incident on Feb. 24, 2008, in which a 26-year-old woman accused Johnson, 28, of using his open hand to push the left side of her head, according to court and police documents obtained by The Kansas City Star.

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

If he did anything, why wasn’t the complaint made in February?

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

This lady waited at least, I’ll say it again A T L E A S T 189 days to make her complaint. If I was going to make an assault charge against someone, it would be at most the next day.

  • October 14, 2008  - gorillafan says:

That is a very petty charge. Barely touch someone and they go crying trying to get MONEY!! I actually take LJ side on this one

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

    I agree with you gorillafan

  • October 14, 2008  - petey says:

Don’t know if you read the complaint, but she filed her charges within 11 hours of it happening. Not sure how anyone can take LJ’s side when they weren’t there and we’re going by heresay in the newspaper. It may seem petty, but this is the third issue LJ has had, and I’ve always believed where there’s smoke, there’s fire….

  • October 14, 2008  - Justin Foote says:

Where did you get a copy of the complaint petey?

  • October 14, 2008  - petey says:

It’s in the article posted in the KC Star. Said the woman filed her complaint 11 hours after it happened, although the police saw no injuries. The charges were delayed in being filed as they put it on the back burner (paraphrasing).

    http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/839836.html

  • October 14, 2008  - petey says:

Sorry if I gave the impression I read the complaint (I can see that now). I just read the article in the paper.

  • October 14, 2008  - Jeff says:

A police report supporting the charge alleged that the woman and a friend were walking through the club when Johnson moved through the crowd toward them and pushed the woman, saying, “… don’t touch me.”Â

Look people. The above statement shows Larry’s innocence. Do you honestly believe that Larry Johnson moved through a crowd without falling down?

  • October 14, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

    LMAO Jeff! Thats funny.

  • October 14, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:
