“If winning isn’t everything, why do they keep score?”

- Hall Of Fame Coach Vince Lombardi -

Tuesday Morning Cup O’Chiefs

Monday was a very active day around the National Football League.

And the guy who got busy the fastest was Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner.

On Sunday, Lerner fired his GM Phil Savage. On Monday, he relieved Romeo Crennel of his coaching duties. On Saturday night, Lerner met with Bill Cowher in New York to see if he wanted to coach the Browns. Cowher turned him down. On Tuesday, Lerner is reportedly going to meet with Scott Pioli, the VP of Player Personnel for the Patriots and the No. 1 GM candidate in the league right now.

The Chiefs have also received permission from the Patriots to speak with Pioli, but the details of a meeting are unknown.

Joining Savage and Crennel on the firing line were Detroit head coach Rod Marinelli and New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini. How Jets GM Mike Tannebaum escaped the ax is one question folks around the NFL were asking by the time the smoke cleared on Monday.

Let’s summarize what we know and what’s been reported.

CHIEFS – We told you last week the Chiefs had conducted an interview with a GM candidate. According to Fox-TV’s Jay Glazer that man was Marty Schottenheimer, who would take a Bill Parcells like role as VP of Football Operations and then hire a GM and coach. On Sirius NFL Radio on Monday, Schottenheimer said: “I had a conversation with the people in Kansas City but it was merely as ‘What do you think the situation is?’ Because I have a very long-standing relationship, I have great respect for Clark and others in that organization.   And so we had some dialogue and I told them what I felt, how I felt about it.  That was all.”

As for future interviews, Denny Thum is actively involved in this process and he was at the team’s offices on Monday morning for Herm Edwards press conference.

BROWNS – Savage got the boot and then Crennel followed on Monday. Both were hired in 2005; Savage from the Baltimore Ravens and Crennel from New England where he was the defensive coordinator on the Patriots three Super Bowl championship teams.

In their time in Cleveland, the Browns went 24-40 and did not make the playoffs. The organization was also plagued by various off-field incidents involving players like TE Kellen Winslow. Crennel was stripped of his authority to hire assistant coaches after making a mistake with offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon. The coach also didn’t have much input in personnel decisions and it was apparent along the shores of Lake Erie that Crennel and Savage were not on the same page.

“As it turned out, we were both held accountable, both Phil and myself for our record and we’re both out of a job and that’s the bottom line,” Crennel told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Whatever the reasons are, no one really cares. It’s just like on Sunday — did you win or lose? That you’re playing with the fourth quarterback doesn’t matter. We’re both accountable and we have to answer for that.”

Conversation has been had with Cowher, Pioli is coming up and the Browns have expressed an interest in New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

LIONS – That Marinelli was given the boot comes as no surprise, not after leading the team to the first 0-16 season in NFL history. In three seasons with Marinelli as head coach the Lions finished 10-38.

“You can’t go 0-16 and expect to keep your job,” Marinelli said in a Monday news conference. “I didn’t conquer anything. I got defeated.

“Our record speaks for itself, but when I look at worst, that is worst. This group of men, we didn’t succeed on the field in terms of our record, but they succeeded in everything I wanted them to do. We came a long ways in terms of how to be a football team. The record doesn’t show it, but it’s a start and it’s a foundation.”

Not only did Detroit ownership announce the firing of Marinelli, they said Tom Lewand would be team president and Martin Mayhew would be general manager on a permanent basis. Both men were appointed to those positions on an interim basis when Matt Millen was fired in September.

On the coaching front, the Lions reportedly are interested in talking to Spagnuolo, Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and Jerry Gray, secondary coach of the Washington Redskins.

JETS – Mangini took over in New York when Herm Edwards left to come to Kansas City. He had the Jets in the playoffs that first year with a 10-6 record. Last year the team went 4-12, but it was what has happened over the last five weeks that cost him his job. At one point the Jets were 8-3 and New York owner Woody Johnson was talking about a possible contract extension. Over the last five weeks, the Jets went 1-4 and their loss at home to the Dolphins on Sunday eliminated them from the playoffs.

“I don’t think it was one thing,” said Johnson, explaining why he fired Mangini after two winning seasons in three years. “It was just Mike’s (Tannebaum) and my judgment that we had to go in a different direction. There’s nothing specific that you can (say). It’s a call that we made and hopefully it’s correct.”

Last spring, Johnson told the New York Daily News that Mangini would “absolutely” be back in 2009, regardless of the Jets record in this season. But after spending $160 million in free agent acquisitions and trading for Favre, the late-season collapse was too much. Tannenbaum said: “We had to make the right decision, not the easy one.”

The Jets have already expressed an interest in talking with Spagnuolo and apparently are trying to set up a meeting with Cowher.

OTHERS – Buffalo owner Ralph Wilson says he and his team won’t have an answer on Dick Jauron’s future until Wednesday at the earliest. Supposedly the St. Louis Rams have expressed interested in speaking with Spagnuolo as well. The Raiders want to talk with Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

VEGAS BACKS GIANTS FOR CHAMPIONSHIP REPEAT

The sports books in Las Vegas have installed the New York Giants as championship favorites in the NFL tournament, giving 2-to-1 odds that they’ll repeat as Super Bowl champs.

In the AFC, Tennessee is rated a 4-to-1 favorite and Pittsburgh is at 9-to-2.

The biggest longest shot in Vegas’ eyes are the Arizona Cardinals, who are down at 40-to-1. In the AFC the overall underdog is Miami at 30-to-1.

Remarkably the oddsmakers have made all four visiting teams the favorites for this weekend’s games: Indianapolis, Baltimore, Atlanta and Philadelphia.

FROM THE PAGES OF CHAMPIONSHIP GAME HISTORY

On December 30, 1973 the Miami Dolphins beat the Oakland Raiders 27-10 in Miami to advance to Super Bowl VII. Larry Csnoka was the key for the Dolphins as he scored on three TD runs and finished the game with 117 yards on 29 carries. Mercury Morris ran 14 times for 86 yards and even quarterback Bob Griese got into the running game, gaining 39 yards on three carries. Miami did it all on the ground, as Griese threw only six passes on the day, completing three for 34 yards. Oakland’s only TD came on a 25-yard pass from Ken Stabler to WR Mike Siani.

FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY

On December 30, 2001, the Chiefs beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-26 at ALLTEL Stadium. The Chiefs ended an 11-game Florida losing streak with the decision over the Jaguars that was led by the passing game. QB Trent Green threw for 294 yards and a pair of touchdowns to TE Tony Gonzalez. WR Eddie Kennison caught six passes for 121 yards and RB Priest Holmes ran for 91 yards and a touchdown. The game was tied at 17-17 at half-time, but the Chiefs scored the first 10 points of the second half to take the lead, thanks a 40-yard FG by Todd Peterson and a 12-yard Green to Gonzalez scoring pass. The Chiefs had four sacks and a Jerome Woods interception of Jacksonville QB Mark Brunell.

SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO …

A handful of former Chiefs, including G-T Dave Lutz who was born on December 30, 1959 in Georgia. Lutz was a second-round choice of the Chiefs in 1983 and played 10 seasons with the team, appearing in 139 games with 123 starts.

Born on this day in 1954 was TE Tony Samuels, a fourth-round draft choice in 1977. He played four years and 50 games with the Chiefs, catching 33 passes for 419 yards.

And born on this day in 1933 was one of the original Dallas Texans, DB Carroll Zaruba. He was one of the Texans draft selections in the very first AFL Draft. He played seven games for Dallas in ’60.

Also born on this day in 1941 was Hall of Fame DB Mel Renfro. He played 14 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (1964-77) and finished his career with 52 interceptions and six returns on various returns.

Born the next year was one of the AFL’s great running backs, Jim Nance. In back-to-back seasons (1966-67) with the Boston Patriots, he ran for a combined 2,674 yards in 28 games.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

The Pro Bowl is leaving Hawaii and the NFL is moving the game to the Sunday before the Super Bowl, to be played at the site of the championship game. I’m going to bet the players aren’t going to be happy about losing their all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii.

Dallas LB Bradie James got into a confrontation with a fan outside the team’s headquarters in Dallas on Monday.

AROUND THE AFC WEST

For the first time since anybody can remember, the Raiders finished a season with optimism after beating Tampa Bay on Sunday.

In Denver, they are shell-shocked by how badly the Broncos defense failed in the AFC West Bowl game against San Diego.

Injuries, particularly to LaDainian Tomlinson were the subject of discussion in San Diego in the afterglow of the team’s victory over Denver and move into the AFC playoffs.

I don’t think Clark is acting as Fast as he should be on the new GM hunt.

Or maybe it’s the way Clark wants it to be, as in Clark is shopping for the Guy that will leave Herm here.

I think Clark’s talk with Marty was a “tell all story” and Marty told Clark he would fire Herm first thing and hire his own GM & Coach like Parcells did.

Clark is a business man that wont pay for something he didn’t get, he wont pay for Herm’s last year with out him being here.

In short, I think we all are stuck with Herm for another year regardless of who the new GM is.

  • December 30, 2008  - MenInRed says:

    God I hope I’m wrong!

  • December 30, 2008  - DWChiefs says:

I think you’re drawing a lot of baseless conclusions at this point. The only GM position that has been filled so far is the Lions, and they filled from within their own organization. Clark is determined to get the right guy. Not the first guy to sign a contract.

  • December 30, 2008  - Uncuffed says:

Clark probably had to wait until the season was over to talk to GM candidates currently with jobs (e.g. Pioli). The head start did let him talk to others on the street (e.g. Schottenheimer).

  • December 30, 2008  - Rip 'em a new one says:

I agree totally with Men in Red on the foot dragging of Clark Hunt. Being thorough and deliberate has its place when the luxury of same allows for it. In this case, there is competition for the top GM candidates and the Chiefs gave themself a two week head start so why is Pioli going FIRST to Cleveland?

This franchise has seldom been aggressive in pursuing free agents and now GM candidates. Again, I’ll say it:

More is lost through indecision than quick decision. Not that the plodding nature of the Chief’s and their philosophies are listening. I fear that once again, the Chiefs will find themselves having to settle for a lesser talented individual because the top talents have gone to the franchises that have out hustled them.

  • December 30, 2008  - tm1946 says:

I think the answer is obvious. If clark wants herm, herm stays. The easiest way is to bring back carl. Then what was started by clark, carl, bill, and herm can run its course. All our speculation is silly, we do not know clark or his view of the chief’s world. I say bring back carl hire him an assistant to train and let herm run with it.

  • December 30, 2008  - DavidS says:

I completely disagree. There is a specific plan in place and Clark has stated since last year that he wants the team to go to the playoffs then Super Bowl. He has to find the right guy who #1 – wants to lead the Chiefs. I don’t think it is the money or some secret plan to make the Chiefs fail. So what if the Browns are runnign around like crazy. The best way to conduct business is by evaluating all the options, identifying who would be the best for the team and community, and who is willing. Fast doesn’t equate to being best. This is a significant decision.

  • December 30, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

According to Carz & Goss. Pioli wants to be Pres and GM, they seem to think Cleveland is the most likely spot for him.

Most of the other yackin heads I’ve heard speak on the topic have been of the mind that the Cleveland position is the best job out there right now and KC being the second.

So given those 2 handicaps I’d guess you can scratch Pioli off your wish list.

  • December 30, 2008  - DWChiefs says:

A smart candidate would interview in any place they were interested in before making a decision. If Pioli is at all interested in KC, then I’m sure he’ll head here after his meeting in Cleveland. If he’s not interested, it won’t matter how quickly Clark got in touch with him.

The fact (rumor?) remains, Clark HAS contacted him, and he hasn’t signed a deal with anybody yet. If there’s any interest at all for him, he’ll meet with Hunt.

  • December 30, 2008  - Rin Tin Tin says:

See you back as Chiefs Head Coach in 2009 Herm – you da man, you da man! As it should be.

    heh heh heh

On a sidenote some of these (now) ex-head coaches sure throw superlatives around with ease. Exhibit A being 0-16 Rodney Marinelli “The record doesn’t show it, but it’s a start and it’s a foundation”

    Uh-huh?! AFLAC!!!

No Rodney – “Herm’s” laid the foundation here in Kaycee- you laid an egg in Motown, nee Detroit’s foundation has gone the way of Chrysler, et al…

    :-)

  • December 30, 2008  - aPauled says:

In one day, Clark is moving too slowly? Nonsense. Pioli and other qualified candidates are not going to lunge at the first offer without looking at all opportunities.

Let’s see Cleveland fired the GM and Coach then started interviews for both positions on Monday, the first day to do so. From that we draw that the owner wants to hire the coach rather than leave that to the GM. Meddling has been Lerner’s history. A candidate like Scott Pioli has to love that.

Cleveland also has cap issues, cancers in Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow Jr. and a teammate who punched out QB Brady Quinn. And this is a great job?

In KC, a GM would have an absentee owner who prefers soccer to football. $30M in cap room. A good young infrastructure of players although the key pieces are still missing. As long as the GM is given the option to can Herm and hire his own coach, the Chiefs offer a Great Opportunity for a young GM.

(No need to copy-and-paste your canned response crotchity old B*st*rd.)

  • December 30, 2008  - Merwin says:

I have to agree, being the first to hire a GM is not going to mean success. I feel we need someone to finish the job we started this year with this rebuild. IMHO, this would be a great place to hire on. As we are starting with a lot of good young talent that just needs one good draft and several good key vetrens to get us to the playoffs for years to come. This is not the team of three years ago that was old and past the point of rebuilding. Plus we have had good solid ownership for years, that is not real meddlesome (aka the Raiders). We need to make sure we get the right man to do the job right the first time around.

  • December 30, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

The decision needs to be made asap, if the new GM has any sense at all, he’ll move Heaven and earth to get Cower as the Chiefs Head Coach!
If we fart around to long someone is going to talk the right numbers to Cower and we will have missed an opportunity at one of the best Head Coaches ever.

And I can’t help but believe that Jr admires Cower also, remember he used the Steelers as an example of what his vision is for the Chiefs, where better to than with Mr. Iron man him self, Bill Cower.

  • December 30, 2008  - ED says:

Please people Cowher isn’t the only good head coach out there. I”m so sick of people jocking Cowher jock strap. I don’t care if we get Cowher or not. Lets just get a good GM that know how to build a football team and a head coach that understands how to develop players, motivate players, and can gameplan for the opponent, as well as make in-game adjustments on offense and defense. Screw Bill Cowher. I’m not saying I wouldn’t mine him as the Chiefs head coach, but he’s not the only good canidate out there that can come in and do a good job.

As for the length of time picking a GM. Whats the hurry. As long as a new Gm is in place by mid to late January I’m cool with take your time. Its a big decision for Clark he doesn’t need to just hire the first person he sees. As for Pioli like someone else has stated he’s not coming to KC. The guy wants to be president and GM and we’re only looking to hire a GM. IF he comes here great but I doubt it. To me the real guy we might need to go after is Parcells. If he decides to opt out of Miami because the owner sells the team then that ought to be the #1 guy on Hunt’s list. Have him come in and hire a GM and head coach. The guy is a proven winner and he can build a foundation here in KC

  • December 30, 2008  - Jean Harlow says:

Rin Tin Tin did you really just blast Marinelli for saying he “laid the foundation” on a losing team. I understand that but not doing the same to Herm is biased, ignorant, close minded, and makes you look like a complete dumb ass as usual.

Seriously whats your agenda posting on here for every damn article Bob writes??? U sleeping with Herm?

  • December 30, 2008  - aPauled says:

If the goal is to hire Bill Cowher, the Chiefs completely screwed up and jumped the gun. Cowher and those close to him say that he is not going to return until 2010. Even then, it is going to require a power role in addition to the Head Coaching position. Either a combo GM or VP in addition to Head Coach.

  • December 30, 2008  - DWChiefs says:

As Miami, Atlanta, and Baltimore has shown, you don’t have to have a proven coach to develop and coach a team to the playoffs. There are plenty of solid coaching prospects available, and will still be available when our new GM is hired. Again, there is no reason to panic or make hurried decisions. Personally, I think it’d be exciting to see a young unproven guy come in and turn this thing around!!

  • December 30, 2008  - MenInRed says:

I’m a Cower fan too “JohnNdallas” and I agree he would be the best thing that hit KC in a very long time.

But I think there is something in his(Cower) deal or contract when he retired from the Steelers that keeps him from returning untel 2010. Even the owner of the Steelers said just last week that Cower wont return untel 2010.

I just pray that Hunt Jr wont tie the hands of the new GM to Herm. Amen!

  • December 30, 2008  - arrowhead78 says:

jean, it’s not biased to sat that marinelli didn’t set a foundation in Detroit, they dont have any rookies starting that are going to get better. They have kevin smith, that’s about it for rookies who had gotten any gametime experience. That’s not a foundation.

  • December 30, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

They have several of the cowboys picks in the next couple of yrs…… what has herm left us with arrowhead? Let me answer that for you….
THE WORST DEFENSE in franchise history, an offense in such a flux that it will take monumental effort by everyone involved to make it truly competitive andddddd he’s set Thigpens development back by an unknowable amount of time,
a disgruntled All Pro HOF lock Tight End, a surly RB that wants outta here, and a 2 and 14 record.

    That sound about right?

“The longer the GM recruitment takes, the harder it will be to get rid of herm.”

Agreed. This business is about timing and getting things done. Herm was not proving himself in New York, and is not proving himself here. If a new GM comes in that has HALF of a brain, Herm is gone. And then Rin’s statement will go something like this…

AND NOW, Clark Hunt has RE-RE-affirmed – and so does Rin – Herm’s The Man! WITHOUT A JOB!!!! HA HA HA!!!!

Does everyone realize if we give up two more wins next year, we will be the Lions???

  • December 30, 2008  - jorge says:

Bring back Carl Tm??? That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. ( well…it ranks second to everything dumbass RIN says)

Everything is speculation at this point. I wouldn’t pay too much attention to what the media is reporting. That’s their job, to report news in the most dramatic fashion to attract a response.

Pioli would obviously be the best, but landing him is going to be just as hard as trying to get RIN to shut up. I don’t think Marty would be that bad. He would give the organization accountability. I don’t care if he can’t win the big game, Herm can’t win a game. So really….how bad can it be?

If Marty gets hired he will keep Herm for his last year. Sucks, I know, I want him to go too. Marty will emphasize our running game, go for a QB in the draft and sign DT Haynesworth. Next year will be competitive but no playoffs and in 2010 Herm will be gone.

Oh yeah….this, too, is just speculation.

  • December 30, 2008  - MenInRed says:

Rin – U SUCK so bad you don’t even know what day it is.

    LMAO

  • December 30, 2008  - arrowhead78 says:

The RB can go he is a whiny baby, just like Vermiel said. i dont know how disgruntled he is at this moment in time, he hasn’t said anything lately and a lousy 2-14 record. Yup that’s about right, but next year it wont be as bad, and the year after that.

And by the way Herm hasn’t left us anything, he isn’t going anywhere, so he left himself this group of young talented players to meld with the new draft class and some free agents this year. Then the team will be ready for a dynasty run…

Hey the chiefs could hire Mangenius, he was such a big hit in NY after he took Herm’s team to the playoffs in his first season there. Just thought I would throw that in, since no one wants to give herm credit for the playoff run his first season here…

    Herms the coach for 09!!!!

Anyone here that’s been in sales knows that the best time, by far, to close a deal is to get to the client first, then close before you or he leave the building.

Your chances of sales success diminish by at least 50% if either of the above factors are not in your favor. This IS a sales presentation in a very real sense if the Chiefs are wanting the best out there.

Those of you saying, “What’s the hurry?”, or words to the effect have not been in a commissioned earnings environment, or if you have, you need a remedial course in closing the deal.

I think his choice would be Bill Polian because I think Polian would accept the GM job after being the second man with the Colts . He is ready to become GM .If not then I hate to say it but Terry Bradway if that happens Herm will stay for awhile Wow!!!!How frightening!!! They worked together with the Jets and he was in the front office with the Chiefs in a personel capacity. If that happens this is not a step forward but a step back. Also I heard Jimmy Raye Jr yes former running backs coach and offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye’s son maybe on the list he has been with the Charger’s personel dept since 2000 or 2001. He did help bring in LT, Merriam , and Phillip Rivers and yes Drew Brees but this is just speculation thats all. Hey I want to ask Do you think Clark may wait and find out the Parcells situation in Miami ? What would be your guys reaction if Parcells came to KC? Man that would shake this town up Mr Midas Man coming it would make great sense because he loves to rebuild teams . Everything Mr Midas touches turns to gold . Wow!! Some dream huh???????

  • December 30, 2008  - ED says:

Rip i’m in sales and the NFL is not like sales unless you’re a player. Either way when you’re in a position of authority like Clark is you hire the best person for the job not person that will say ok the fastest. Clark needs to take his time conduct thorough interviews and go with the person that he feels fit the mode of what he’s looking for. Fans are so impatience wanting immediate gratification with everything in sports then wonder why things went wrong when they go wrong. This is the most important decision Clark has to make upon becoming the owner of this team and I have no problem with him taking his time while he does that. So it can be the right decision.

And last it doesn’t matter if he makes this decision in mid- January if the new Gm doesn’t want Herm there then guess what he want be there.

  • December 30, 2008  - Rip 'em a new one says:

    Ed,

I respectfully disagree. Once the target(s) have been established as the best of the best prospects, those are the ones you close down first and foremost.

I think it’s all about the evaluation of the talent out there and moving quickly to complete the circle. I’m all in favor of the Rooney rule and all that, but some, if not most of those things could have been put in motion earlier rather than at season’s end when a franchise like Cleveland already has a leg up on one of your prospects.

Clark Hunt grade thus far: D

Ed, lets say your at the local farmers market, and your shopping for some tomatoes, you go to a booth and you pick out a bunch of tomatoes you like, but you decide you want to go look at the other produce so you set the tomatoes you like down and go shop elsewhere at the market, well you find some that are nice but you decide you like the former tomatoes better, so you go back, GUESS WHAT, There Gone, the vendor has sold all his tomatoes, Now what??

    LOL

  • December 30, 2008  - aPauled says:

Shanahan as GM?? Have you looked at the free agents that he has signed? That ain’t gonna happen. He is a coach and will exel is he accepts that.

Good point Rip’em. I really don’t agree with alot of Bob’s postings but I have to say thanks to Bob for giving us a forum to discuss all things CHIEFS! CHIEFS! CHIEFS!

I think it’s important to say that we all want the chiefs to be a winning, Superbowl Championship team. I want the chiefs to win just as much as the next chiefs fan.

NOW LETS PLAY SOME DAMN FOOTBALL! WOO!!!! HOO!!!!

  • December 30, 2008  - cupp says:

Denver firing shanny ensures another 8-8 afc west championship team next year. I think the chiefs need stability right now. We cannot gut the team one year and the front office the next. Unless we want to be the radiers.

I betting Donkeys want to hire Cower, UGH!!!!

  • December 30, 2008  - ED says:

Man picking a GM is not like buying tomatoes either. I’ve been in management before you interview canidates until you feel you find the best one that fits what you’re looking for. NOt the first person you interview. When you do that you end up picking someone who knows how to interview but really don’t know how to do the job. As for guys like Pioli and all he’s not the only good GM canidate just like Cowher is not the only good head coach out there. And Rip how can you give Hunt a D when he hasn’t selected anyone and you haven’t seen what the person he brought in can do. Thats just so dumb. Impatient fan.

As for Shanahan getting fired the Broncos must have lost their marbles. I’m glad though I think they’re going right back to the toilet bowl of the AFC west. Man that is good news. Now we really can get this thing turned around quick seeing that the Broncos are starting over. San Diego still has Norv. And the Raiders still have Al Davis. GO CHIEFS

  • December 30, 2008  - ED says:

But i will say if Clark like Pioli than he needs to act now. Offer the man whatever he wants and try to accomodate the man. My thing is their nothing wrong with interviewing different canidates, but if this guy is fitting the critiera you’re looking for then make him your man if not move on.

  • December 30, 2008  - Hank says:

Need an answer to a question(s): Do we get to carry over the $30 million we are under the cap to next year? If not, can we use this years cap money to resign/extend existing players such as DJ? Thanks for the answer(s).

  • December 30, 2008  - TCharlton says:

Yes, this is great news. I hate Shannahans guts, but the man is a great coach. He’s not a good GM though. This is only good if Denver does not get Bill Cowher. THAT WOULD BLOW!! Actually, I think it would be cool if we cool if we could get Shanny

  • December 30, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

Hank, yes the money transfers over

  • December 30, 2008  - B in SC says:

I don’t think the cap money really carries over. Each year you have different contracts that go against the cap. Next year’s prorated portion of contracts could either give us a bigger margin or smaller. Depending on who we realease and how their contract is structured will affect the cap margin as well. You can really forget the $30 million we had this year as it is recalculated by a certain date for next year. We really shouldn’t be in worse shape though. That is the benefit of having a young roster.

  • December 30, 2008  - B in SC says:

As for Shanahan, that’s pretty interesting. I wonder if Bowlen is angling for Pioli or Cowher as well and thought he needed to move now. Or perhaps Parcells. For those who were hoping Parcells would go to KC, he has already said he had about 4 teams he would be interested in and KC wasn’t one of them. It sounded like Oakland would be his first choice oddly enough.

For Cowher, it sounded earlier today like he and the Jets were a real possibility since Woody Johnson said he was willing to discuss a power sharing arrangement with the GM and Cowher. Seems like he is willing to do whatever it takes to sign him. That may be a done deal. Or not.

  • December 30, 2008  - colby says:

Agreed ED. With some good off season decisions, there’s not reason to think the Chiefs can’t bounce back and win this division in chaos.

  • December 30, 2008  - DAVE. H. says:

WHOA, Everybody I think the one thing we need to concentrate on is the decision our owner makes. That is what will set the tone for the next decade. If Clark makes a good choice whether Herm is fired or not will determine our future. The scary thing is that we might even know a good hire when we see it. If Clark chooses badly we will pay for a long time and then it may be time to switch loyalties. Clark seems to be taking an approach that is different, albeit not translucent to the rest of the world, maybe that’s a good thing! He doesnt want media or fans to influence the decision. I also think that is a good thing, we as fans are not experts!! We may think that we live, eat, sleep football but we are mistaken. There are a lot of other people better judges than us, lets let them do their job!!

Closed circuit, sort of, to team Gretz:

I’m guessing your Cup O Chiefs would not have turned into a vat of bubbling caldron?

  • December 30, 2008  - DAVE. H. says:

Well I guess when the basic topic is head coaches getting fired and Herm is still employed. Everyone that cares even a little bit comes out to voice their opinion. I love the passion most everyone has for the team on this site, except for Rin who obviously enjoys sticking a hot poker into the side of Chiefs FANS!!!!

Coaches are falling like leaves, yet we still have herm, I know we need a GM first. I just dread to see what junk we get stuck with. We have to hope clark is moving as speedily as possible. There are just to many vacancies this year in head coaches.

It does supprise me Shannanhan got the ax. I guess all coaches are hired to be fired. I wish KC had a coach with his record.

  • December 30, 2008  - steve says:

    know what?
herm is still the man in 2009!

  • December 30, 2008  - tm1946 says:

Cap money, probably wrong, but I understood it just disappears if not used. Does not move forward just stays in the franchise vault. Next year, in theory, the team will have 30 mil because it is not committed to current contracts.

    Sorry hope that makes sense.

If the Bronco’s get Cowher it doesn’t mean they will become instant superbowl winners, just as the jets were not instant superbowl winners for bringing in Favre…

One small difference arrowhead, shanny WON 2 SUPERBOWLS!

“If the Bronco’s get Cowher it doesn’t mean they will become instant Superbowl winners, just as the jets were not instant Superbowl winners for bringing in Favre…”

No one I’ve read posting here has suggested that Cower was an “instant” winner, but he has a hell of a lot more upside than herm! Cower earned his position, it wasn’t just handed to him, unlike herm.

You are right about farve, that signing made as much sense as Marty signing Montana! It was a shot that didn’t work, the same way herm hasn’t worked.
