Tony G Likes What He Sees

From River Falls, Wisconsin

Not much is expected of the Chiefs this year, what with it being a rebuilding year and all.

Tony Gonzalez doesn’t see it that way.  Not at all.

One of the most veteran Chiefs believes the folks around him are already a better team than they were last year.

And, he knows there are skeptics.

“Most people are not going to believe it,” Gonzalez said.  “People in my own family are like ‘oh yeah, whatever.’ I’m telling you we are a lot better than we were last year.  We are a lot farther along.  These young guys can play.  They can go.”

Gonzalez is trying to help out with all the young guys as well, trying to speed up the learning curve.

“I  can tell them what works for me and hopefully they can incorporate it into their games,” Gonzalez said. ” I just got done talking to (Brian Johnston) about work ethic and what it’s going to take to be good.  They ask me those questions.  I don’t have to seek them out; they want to know.  Winding down the end of my career I want them to get better.  I want that learning curve shortened so we can go out there and be the best team right away.”

When told of the rebuilding that would come this season, Gonzalez wasn’t very happy.  But he now understands what Herm Edwards is trying to do and thinks it’s the way to go.

“We do have a young team and there are going to be some growing pains, there’s no doubt about that,” said Gonzalez.  “But I think by the end of the year we are really going to have a good football team and we will be that much ahead going into next year.”

Every evening I go out on my deck and holler over to my neighbor. He is as much a Chiefs fan as myself. And what I have been saying to him is pretty much what Tony is talking about. I don’t see this year being nearly as devastating as the skeptics want to keep implying. Now, I’m not shouting Super Bowl, but this WILL be a fun year.

I agree. I will take a 7-9 or 8-8 season if I see that the team is going in the right direction. I think we are one more draft away from being a really good football team. If we can keep drafting the way we have I see us challenging the Chargers for many years to come.

I think in about 2 or 3 years will be in the playoffs we might even when a playoff game. But for that to happen we need these guys to become what their projected to be and for Croyle to step up and become are QB. This year won’t be as bad as last year but it won’t be a year to brag about.

Saying we’ll be better this year is stating the obvious. DL is probably the only position to be substantially worse on paper, with all others the same or potentially better (on paper). Coaching could be a little better with a new OC, although, with the same critically flawed HC, i’ll temper my expectations on that front.
