Thursday Morning Cup O’Chiefs

We are now 45 days away from the opening round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

And at this time there is only one thing that is apparent: the starting path of this draft remains a very big mystery.

Detroit has the first pick, St. Louis is next and then the Chiefs. It’s almost impossible to say with any certainty what names will be linked to those picks and those teams on April 25

There are new people in place making the decisions at all three teams. Each club has a new head coach, with changes in offensive and defensive systems. Each of those clubs needs talent all over the roster. There is no history to fall back on with these teams, no previous drafts to provide a clue. It’s not Matt Millen in Detroit or Carl Peterson in Kansas City. The committee that seemed to make every decision in St. Louis has been broken up.

Here is information and speculation on those top three picks:

DETROIT – Hosted QB Matt Stafford for a visit this past week. They’ve already had Baylor OT Jason Smith into Motown for a look see. Rumor has it that Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry will visit them next week and they’ll also have Virginia OT Eugene Monroe for a visit within the next two weeks.

The Lions could go in any number of directions with this. My guess, and it’s only a guess, is that with Jim Schwartz taking over they are going to look to rebuild that defense first and foremost. I know there are some Chiefs fans with their heart set on Curry, but he may not be available. I also just do not see them using the pick on Stafford. There are too many question marks about the young quarterback.

ST. LOUIS – The release this week of LT Orlando Pace would seem to make the choice for the Rams obvious: either Smith or Monroe. But don’t pencil them in for a blocker just yet. Remember, new coach Steve Spagnuolo comes from the defensive side and the Rams defense was woeful last year. If Curry is what he supposed to be, I can’t imagine a guy like Spagnuolo passing him up.

I would not rule out anyone for the Rams right now except Stafford.

CHIEFS – Matt Cassel’s arrival would seem to take Stafford and Mark Sanchez out of thinking for the Chiefs. They need a right tackle, so Smith and Monroe will definitely be considerations. They need defensive help of all kinds in the front seven, so I would think Curry, Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji and Florida State defensive end Everette Brown or Texas defensive end Brian Orapko would also be considerations.

I would bet all three clubs would consider trading down, but that just doesn’t happen anymore at the top of the draft. Here’s the trading activity in the first round over the last six drafts:

The last time a top-five pick was traded was in 2003, when the New York Jets traded away picks No. 13 and 22 in the first round and a later choice to Chicago for the fourth pick. The Jets used that spot to select DT Dewayne Robertson out of the University of Kentucky.

That didn’t work out so well, as Robertson was traded last year to Denver and earlier this year the Broncos released him before the start of free agency.

The cost of moving that high is prohibitive. The cost of signing those players at the top of the draft is prohibitive as well. That’s the major reason Robertson was traded and then released by two teams: it was the money he was set to get in the contract that he signed as the fourth pick.

All of this will make for a very interesting 45 days as we slide towards the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

SMITH STUMBLES AT HIS PRO DAY

Back in the middle of December, Andre Smith figured to be on a short list of players that the Chiefs would consider as the third pick in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

The names getting thrown around then were Smith, Virginia tackle Monroe, Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford, Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree and Ole Miss tackle Michael Oher.

Right now, there’s a good chance that only Moore is on the list of potential candidates for that third pick. The others have fallen to the side and none has fallen farther than Smith. He did not participate in any on field work at the NFL Scouting Combine. In fact he left Indianapolis without telling combine officials that he was going. That move already bothered some NFL teams.

Then, he showed up for his workout day at the University on Wednesday and laid an egg. He struggled to turn in times of 5.28 and 5.33 seconds in the 40-yard dash. For some reason, Smith also ran without a shirt on and the jiggling showed those scouting types in attendance that he wasn’t in the best of shape. That was also evident when he hit just 19 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds.

All that despite the fact he weighed in at a very good 325 pounds, his lightest weight in several years. He stands 6-4¼ .

Smith also tried to fix his reputation that took a hit with his decision to leave the Combine early.

I just made a bad decision in leaving the combine,” Smith said. “If I had it to do all over again, I would handle it differently. I just made a bad decision in leaving, but I think I made a great football decision to get back and start working out with my trainer.”

Alvin Keels, Smith’s agent said: “I’ll take a lot of the blame for it. I’m the one who does this year in and year out and this is his first time.”

Keels said Smith was unprepared for the criticism hitting him.

“Any time the reaction is that harsh, athletes are somewhat surprised,” Keels said. “Oftentimes, when you’re a star athlete, there’s just so much good that’s written about you. They build you up. And when you make a mistake, they don’t realize how much a mistake is blown up as well. It was a learning experience, if nothing more. He’s definitely learned.”

There appears to be little doubt now that Smith will fall in the first round. The question is how far. It will cost him a lot of money when it comes time to negotiate that first NFL contract.

CHIEFS RELEASE QUINN GRAY

The new regime at the Chiefs released quarterback Quinn Gray on Wednesday. Quinn becomes the fourth player released by the team in the last month, joining Donnie Edwards, Damon Huard and Patrick Surtain.

Gray was signed in October after injuries to Brodie Croyle (knee) and Damon Huard (finger) left the Chiefs short-handed at the position. Signed on October 22, he was the third inactive quarterback for one game and then was listed as the No. 2 quarterback the reset of the season.

His only appearance in relief of Tyler Thigpen came in a blowout loss to Buffalo, when Gray completed seven of eight passes for 76 yards and a touchdown and ran once for 27 yards.

As far as they’ve announced publicly, it leaves the Chiefs with four quarterbacks on their roster: Croyle, Thigpen, Matt Cassel and Ingle Martin.

COMINGS, GOINGS & SIGNINGS AROUND THE LEAGUE

BEARS – signed S Josh Bullocks (New Orleans); released G Terrence Metcalf.

BROWNS – released WR Joe Jurevicius.

CARDINALS - signed long snapper Mike Leach (Denver).

EAGLES – signed S Rashad Baker (Oakland).

JETS – signed LB Larry Izzo (New England).

SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO …

Born on March 12, 1952 in Newport News, Virginia was running back Tommy Reamon who played in 11 games and four starts with the Chiefs in the 1976 season. He carried the ball 103 times for 314 yards and four touchdowns and 10 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown. He also had 10 kickoff returns for a 22.3-yard average and one punt return for no yards.

Reamon played at Fort Scott Community College and at the University of Missouri. He shared the MVP honors in the World Football League during the 1974 season playing for the Florida Blazers.

He went on to acting, where he played running back Delma Huddle in the movie North Dallas Forty. He then went into high school coaching in the Newport News area, where he coached future NFL quarterbacks like Aaron Brooks and Michael Vick.

Okay, here’s my mock draft, nee, epiphany:

Round 1: Trade pick to ESPN for Herm Edwards

Round 2: Trade pick to Fuzzy’s South for Fred Arbanas

Round 3: Trade pick to Price Chopper for 1 doz. eggs and a gallon of milk

Round 4: Draft English major from Cornell or other Ivy League school to proof-read what I type on Bob’s site…because it’s atrocious and full of inconsistent grammar (but hey, at least I DO use punctuation, unlike a certain “a-hole” which will remain nameless).

    Round 5: Re-draft Justin Medlock

Shall I keep going, or shant I?

Subject to change, and not expecting any trade downs, here’s how I think the draft will play out for only the first three picks:

Detroit: QB Stafford. Lions are the Lions, afterall.

St Louis: LT Jason Smith. Fills a need.

KC: (One of the following three):

LB Curry, OT Monroe, NT Raji

Which side of the ball gets top draft help?

Thank you for the support in, “The Right 53″

    1. I do not know anything about the G from Chicago Metcalf. But if we are picking up players as we go then sign him to get him here and see what he can do.
    2. The only name on this list that jumps at me is Joe Jurevicius, he has good experiance and IMO is a good posetion receiver. He played for TB and I think he was part of their SB TEAM. He could be a good mentor for our “kids”.
    3. There are many of us that have Questioned the pick up of Travis Daniels and maybe “they” are gathering some under the radar players. Then maybe that should continue. We can pick up some cast off OL with low mileage. Put them into the yatzee cup, shake , and see how they work together. Just because the player is one coaches “trash” doesn’t mean he can’t be another coaches “treasure”.

No way will the Rams take Stafford. Not with the money they’re already paying Bulger. I do think there’s a very good chance that the Lions will take Curry. And if they don’t…I also think there’s a pretty good chance that the Rams will take him, and address their O-line in later rounds. So, pretty much what Bob already said. Trying to guess what the Chiefs will do, though…is next to impossible. But, I like that. Why tip your hand?

And now it’s time for ‘My Take’, regular feature of bobgretz.com, featuring your anonymous host… ‘anonymous’ (accept no imitations- imitation ‘is’ the sincerest form of flattery.) :-)

Ye shall know the green-eyed faction who pretend anonymity but in fact portend faux mimicry, how? By their works…found wanting scribes these nee idolators who indicate why they be the followers this Pied Piper’s rapier wit and not pacesetters, why? They have not – to borrow from Al Campanis – the “necessities”, which is to say talent theirs does as it can, this genius mine as it must.

Which brings us to today’s topic QBs & imitators. Yesterday we spoke of the genuine article nee of what a real one looks like – exhibit ‘A’ one Jay Cutler…and of that which be a knock-off/brand X model, exhibit ‘B’ for ‘bust to be’, mat cassel.
Again, ‘QB’ be spelled C-u-t-l-e-r, and imitator c-a-s-s-e-l.

Kaycee in winter, typical mid-March morn clearly portly to fashionably fat…place where the QB’s be dowdy & the skies be not cloudy all day (too, no longer Gray, Quinn-tessentially speaking.)

Fortunately, he that will be ‘A’ starting QB KCs Chiefs 2009 is returned: Brodie Croyle – exhibit ‘A’ like Cutler as to arm and exhibit ‘B’ too as in ‘better’ than our mat who, aft but ‘F’alling through the door will soon enough land rightful place his on the floor…not so much a cassel to build around as ‘pie in the sky’ dripping rancid tears of not so sweet rain on a parade… a cake left out in the rain & oh, what are those lyrics to his song?

(Cue Richard Harris) – “Our cassel mat is hiding in the dark, all the doors are locked keep media out…someone left his cake out in the rain, and
I don’t think that mat can make it cause it took so long to fake it & he’ll never have that recipe again…Oh, no!”

Come Game 1, the return Brodie Croyle as starting QB KC Chiefs.

  • March 12, 2009  - Dave says:

Bob, do you really think the Chiefs would try to draft a right tackle with the #3 pick? It just seems like a waste of value to try to fill that hole so high in the draft. I can’t think of many teams who already have a young left tackle drafting a bookend that high. And if they took an RT at #3 they’d be paying him more than they pay Branden Albert, which can’t help.

I’m sure you will do a deeper analysis of the Chiefs potential picks as the draft approaches, so I just wanted to throw this question into the mix.

  • March 12, 2009  - Double A says:

Detroit will not pick a LB #1 overall, when they can get a decent one in rounds 2 and on. Detroit picked Ernie Sims in the top 10 just 2 years ago. I will be shocked and appalled if they select a LB with their first pick.

Detroit needs a franchise QB. Fans need a reason to watch Detroit on Thanksgiving day. They should be kicked out of the NFL, if they do not take Stafford or Sanchez. Heck, I’d understand if they picked the best LT, but LB…morons if they do.

For the Chiefs at #3 – best case scenario, trade down and pick E. Brown, M. Oher, Moreno or Maclin. But, if they’re stuck at #3, I’d be happy with Monroe, JSmith, Curry, even Crabtree.

Seattle needs a franchise QB, too. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them pick Stafford or Sanchez.

  • March 12, 2009  - CosmicPal says:

They very well could draft a tackle, but if they do, it will be a left tackle and they could move Brandon Albert to Guard or Right Tackle.

I don’t see them doing that, but it is a possibility should Curry be taken already.

  • March 12, 2009  - eyePod says:

I’m just hoping that Haley realizes that you don’t need to waste a game-day roster spot on a 3rd QB. Herm would always have all 3 QB’s on (before the injuries). You’re allowed to have an emergency QB, and not have him on the 45 man roster!

  • March 12, 2009  - Scott says:

I’m not sure why some seem to think that O-line is a “waste” of a pick at #3?

If we can get a guy who can pass-protect and run-block…then I say “pay the man”.

It’s not a glamorous pick, for sure. And I know we need Defense, badly. But let’s face it, we could have the most Badass D in the league…and still not win many games. To win games, you must score points. To score points, you need run blocking. Ours sucks. To score points, you must have pass protection. Ours sucks. You have to give the man some time to look over the field…and give the receivers some time to get open. You can’t have your QB running for his like the second he gets his hands on the ball.

Games are won and lost on the lines. I know our D-line needs help, but our O-line needs it worse.

That being said…I’d still take Curry if he’s there at #3. I just don’t think he will be. Either way, we’re going to HAVE to get the O-line upgraded. Until we can start running the ball effectively again, and keep our QB off his back…we’re not going to win very many games. Period.

  • March 12, 2009  - Hank says:

    Quick thots:
    #3 pick on a RT is not a waste-reasons:
    1. Many teams (especially 3-4) are blizting from that side since the attention is paid to the other side. OLB’s line up and if TE is too far in or in a pattern it is up to the RB to stop.
    2. Most RT get chip block help from TE. What would happen if TE didn’t need to help !
    3. If LT goes down, you have a premiere guy to temp switch.
    4. Argument that you need more of a “run blocker” at RT doesn’t holdwater. Teams run to the LEFT 48% of the time.

  • March 12, 2009  - anonymous says:

By the way, nee, in addition to the above ramblings, I want everyone to know that I am seeking help at Charter.

  • March 12, 2009  - Double A says:

    Hank and Scott –

#3 will not be a RT. The LT picked at #3 will not be asked to switch positions. Brandon Albert will be moved to LG and Waters will be traded for a draft pick. (Just a guess, IF OTs Smith and Monroe are still there at #3– they may both be gone by #3 though.)

  • March 12, 2009  - ArrowheadHawk says:

    Hank,
I agree. We have a lot of high draft picks already invested on the D line that may only require better coaching and development to excel-(possible). We have a lot of needs on the O line. ROT makes sense to me. If it were a lower half of the first round I’d go Duke Robinson OG.

  • March 12, 2009  - Lukat Mapeenos says:

Does anyone here think that trading down might actually be a good idea if we’re thinking of line-help?

  • March 12, 2009  - colby says:

Agreed. If Curry is gone by the time we pick and no one wants to swap picks with us then a guy like Monroe would be a great pick. With Monroe and Albert at the tackles (take your pick on what side each would play) then Cassel/Thigpen/Croyle or whomever would certainly have the protection needed to get the ball to Bowe and Gonzalez and Bradley. If he’s healthy, Orlando Pace could be an interesting signing. People thought Willie Roaf was done when we brought him in here and the next thing you know, he earns four Pro Bowls in as many seasons with the Chiefs.

The O line needs fixing to be sure, but I’d rather see the Chiefs trade down a few spots, get an extra pick or two, and nab a pass rusher or an elite LB later on.

Keep this scenario in mind: Philly has two first round picks (21 and 28) and they may be in the market for an OT since Tra Thomas departed in FA and Jon Runyan is near the end of the line, OR a WR like Crabtree to give McNaab a legit #1 target. Philly saw first hand in the playoffs how an elite WR (ie L-Fitz) can take over a game. Perhaps we trade the #3 pick and LJ to Philly for their pair of firsts and either another pick (like a 4th rounder) or a reclamation project like WR Reggie Brown or OG Max Jean Gilles.

    What do you think guys?

  • March 12, 2009  - Hank says:

    Double A-

I agree that #3 MAY not be a a RT. I think Smith/Monroe at LT, Albert at LG, Waters at C, Rudy at RG and take a serious look at Richardson at RT is a worthy idea.

  • March 12, 2009  - Scott says:

The problem with the whole “trading down” thing is…the chances of anyone trading up to #3 are almost nil. (See Bob’s stats above). The only way I could even see the possibility of it happening, is if Stafford is still there at #3. And we wouldn’t know that until the time comes. Then again, it’s tough to tell what Mr. P might be thinking…or have up his sleeve.

  • March 12, 2009  - JG says:

Why is everyone so down on Albert. He has every tool to play LOT and be a probowl caliber T. This was his first year play that position and he did very well. He will only get better with more experience playing at that position. I think that we won’t get a tackle with the #3 pick but if we do I highly doubt they would move someone who is that athletic inside and waste his potential.

  • March 12, 2009  - byzkit says:

I like the idea of if we switch to the 3-4 of moving the line around and drafting Monroe. Albert at LG and Waters to C but moving Rudy to NT. We’ end up with a pretty decent front 3. With Dorsey and Boone playing ends. With Tank and Turk in a rotation.

I mean, if our defense had made actual stops more often, our offense would benefit from having more time on the field and better starting position.

Chiefs really should go defensive with this pick, but I wouldn’t freak with either Crabtree or one of the tackles. But that’s only because I don’t love who’s at the top of the board defensively.

    Josh,
Why does it have to be about KU losing one, bro? I have to say, I’m embarrased, but it’s not like they lost to Bradley or Bucknel in the tournament….. it is a B named team….coincidence?! :)
Anyway, this is a good distraction time while it lasts. After March Madness and Aprils draft, we’re in for the long dry stretch of May June and July to live through before we get to training camp.
Nothing (in sports) is better than football! NOTHING!

And no TE nee no one is better in the history of the KC Chiefs than Fred Arbanas!

While trading draft picks doesn’t happen much, what can happen is drafting a player someone else wants and trading him for a pick and/or a player. The value issue doesn’t come into play as much. Drafting a Crabtree at #3 and trading to someone else for their pick and a #2. I suspect all scenarios will be considered by Pioli. I do think Curry will be available at 3 however. Detroit needs a QB and/or an OL.

Did I say Fred Arbanas? I meant Tony Gonzalez….how silly nee idiotic of me!

    So….building a dominating O-line again is “moronic”?

Our “offense being on the field more” would have made a difference….really? So, what…we could go three and out once again?

O-line, dude. Love it or shove it. That’s the bottom line. That’s what wins games.

You seem to halfway agree with with me…but call me a “moron”. WTF?

    Come on guys!
Can’t we all get along? there are several positions on the team that need a little tweaking. So then it is agreed there are only two morons that post here, anonymousRintin and the artist formerly known as aggrivated a-hole (cupcake).

Haha, this is true…and I think you might be onto something with the “B-named” team theory!

I have to disagree with you this once. I think you are forgetting the game we call Baseball. IMO it ranks up there as one of the top TEAM sports.Once again this is only my opinion.
Don’t get me wrong…. the word football gives me goose bumps, you can not replace a good football game with anything. I love the game and our CHIEFS

I can only do baseball if I go TO the game. I can’t get into it ( or stay awake) watching it on TV… it’s sure not the game it once was….

I like MLB and the NBA about the same way. Once the playoffs start and things heat up, I can deal with it.
I guess I’m a bit jaded with the baseball players in the last few years. Not so much that they were using steriods or hgh, but when they come out and lie and lie and lie to save face…. come on, we’re not stupid. If you’re busted, you’re busted. Own up to it like a man and move on.
You don’t see too many NFL players sitting in front of the league vowing to prove to all of America that they’re were clean after failing a piss test.

    “. . .”

    - it’s just as we suspected.

    “AnonymousRintintin”

    - yes Falstaff?

    “Did you”

    - no, that’s your breath – try not exhaling so close to your nose.

    “have a sister”

    - no, do you – and what’s her name?

    “named Sybil??”

    - oh, you’re not sure – perhaps she uses one of the other 16 while you’re contemplating the fuzz in your navel (Cue Hank Williams Jr.) – “It’s a Family Tradition!”

“I could explain many questions we all have.”

    - of course you could – all of the doctors are certain of it – as soon as we loosen the straps on your backward jacket.

    “But back”

    - yes, and your head be in there too.

    “to sports.”

    - to euthanasia!

    “It is all”

    - promises promises.

    “about the TEAM”

    - yes, what would you like to know?

    “…and …………”

    - take your time, focus, concentrate – then ask your question.

    “THE RIGHT”

    - is just opposite the left – as that your pulse be only (cue Gene Pitney) “24 hours from Tulsa” (translation: “from conscious”)

    “53″

    - yes, about that – we’ve been meaning to talk to you about your low IQ – but at least it’s getting better/higher since you’ve been reading anonymous.

    “2009″

    - that’s my IQ; please, my Mensa membership is beside the point.

    “time check 2258″

    - great, you get to pay…again.

    heh heh heh
