The Underclassmen List For ’09 Draft

College underclassmen that had the ability to enter the 2009 NFL Draft had until 4 p.m. CST to file their paper work with the league.

The players who could jump were those that played last year as juniors or sophomore-redshirts.

Two big names announced that they were making the move to pro football on Wednesday: Southern Cal QB Mark Sanchez, who is coming off a big performance in the Rose Bowl against Penn State. Plus, Florida WR Percy Harvin is making the jump after being part of the Gators national championship team.

Three big name players said on Thursday they would stay in school, including Florida LB Brandon Spikes and Ole Miss pass rusher Greg Hardy.  Both were surprises since the draft does not have much in the way of pass rushers and both would have been probable first round selections, maybe as high as the top half  of the initial round.

There may be a few players who slipped in under the radar in the last hour or so, but right now here are the major college players who have entered the draft, listed by position:

Interesting that of all the Patriot (Pioli & Bill) picks they never traded down. Too many low round picks I guess.

Bradford out — Chiefs trade down. Too many good OT’s not too.

Bob left out Knowshon Moreno from the UGA Dawgs on his RB list but who’s counting? Anyway, I like that Sanchez is coming out at the QB position.

More options, more reasons for trade-ups, more leverage for Pioli in working this 2009 draft OR opportunity to take a franchise QB.

I can’t remember a better vintage year for OT prospects so there are options there to be considered. It’s all good.

Mark Sanchez IS a winner , I have watched him in action , his eye hand cordination is extreem along with his mental endurance . Nothing bothers him except loseing .

Tough to jump on a kid like Sanchez. He’s never had to play against adversity except Oregon State where he wasn’t very good. Could be another Lienert. Easy to look good behind their OL. Big risk for a 3rd pick. Many other needs when there isn’t a sure thing at QB.

This will all change based on free agent signings and/or trades before draft time.

For people who like to watch film. NFL Game Rewind has all games from 2008 Season available for viewing. It costs $20.

I’ve been watching the film & have been very impressed with Flowers & Page on Defense. I think that Boone & Dorsey are the best on the line & Boiman may be the best linebacker on the field. Our linebacker are flat out bad with gap control & over pursue on nearly every play.

On offense, depending on what our philosophy is next year…I think we are O.K. at QB. Thigpen actually make fairly good decisions, but has trouble with accuracy. We need to get Charles more involved, because Larry doesn’t want to play. It really shows at the end of the season. He doesn’t even try to attack the hole. We need a Brian Westbrook type back, who can run between the tackles, but is also extremely effective in the screen game. I was impressed with Branden Albert. Waters played pretty well. I am noticing that defenses are really attacking the gap between C & RG. Niswanger struggles. Mac Struggles. Wade Smith…better than Adrian Jones.

We need another threat at receiver too, but wouldn’t say it is a first round need.

Hasn’t Brian Waters played @ center some? It would be pretty interesting to see Waters making the line audibles, have Albert back @ right guard and either Andre Smith or Eugene Monroe @ left tackle. I don’t really know when you draft people on the right side of the line.

It’s going to be an interesting offseason. I hope we have a good free agency too, because we have more holes than we have draft picks.

Jees , Larrys going to be hard to get rid of ! TOO much to late . Tighpen needs a lot of work , besides just pratice , reciever routs and some kind of boot camp to build mental & phy. confindence . Second half takes that extra kick .

I think a HUGE question is what are we going to do on offense in 09? Will it be the spread? That greatly affects the draft and what we try to do with LJ.
Personally I don’t see them sticking with the spread (but what do I know?), so Thiggy…get familiar with Rudy! It’s about time you learned how to take a snap from under center.

  • January 16, 2009  - tm1946 says:

Whatever direction the offense goes, the chiefs need C,RG,RT, and WR, disparately. That assumes Thigpen is the QB and the spread stays. So much for herm’s 85% ready team. I still want rush DE fixed by the draft or FA.

The bottom line is we need to be give Pioli a chance to imprint on the team. Heck, we got stuck with Carl 10 years to long. And I am still hopeful there will be some changes in coaching staff.

this is a pretty good read: http://www.thephinsider.com/story/2007/4/16/0619/91876

breaks down 1st rnd qbs for the last 10 yrs and shows them based on completion percentage and # of starts.

Basically, rarely does a FIRST ROUND qb become succesful who has started less than 30 games in college. Sanchez only has 16 starts!!!

As others have said, those 16 starts were on a stocked team with NFL caliber talent, against a relatively easy schedule.

Sanchez MIGHT turn out to be a good NFL QB, but in no way is he ready to start right away (due to the lack of experience), and he is a tremendous risk at #3 overall. Missing on a top 5 pick will cost the chiefs $30 million and can set the franchise back years.

here is what pete carrol has to say,” Mark is going against the grain on this decision and he knows that,” said Carroll, a former NFL head coach. “He knows that coming out early is a tremendous challenge for a quarterback and the statistics don’t back up that it’s easy to be successful in the way that he’s going about it. We’ve seen successes and we’ve seen guys come up short on this deal. We hope this works out beautifully for Mark and his family.”

it’s nice to read what everyone has to say..and think…and is very interesting..but that Sanchez has more heart..than you guys give him credit..a man with ..the light are flickering ..and when it comes on’s…he will blossom…to be a very good QB i like thiggy but no way do i think he’s a Rich Cannon…..Since where so far away from being good..there are a lot of players that need to be traded..and give them a chance to get a shot at a super bowl…bring in a couple of vets..get some good picks…and next year..when Cowher comes..he can have some good young fast smart Players and a Draft with some good ones there to just awaiting to fill in his hole…then …WE PLAY CHIEFS..BALL…CAUSE WE KNOW BC KNOWS DEFENSE

  • January 16, 2009  - dvusvp says:

AND O YEA…1 OF TWO THINGS WILL HAPPEN…HERM WILL BE LET GO AND BAILEY WILL COACH FOR 1 YEAR OR HERM WILL FINISH OUT HIS CONTRACT…KNOW MATTER HOW GOOD THEY DO…BUT COWHER WILL BE THE COACH ,,THE FOLLOWING SEASON…BELIVE THAT !!

  • January 16, 2009  - tm1946 says:

Dream about Cowher if you must, not going to happen as long as you have a GM, remember Pioli?

Gailey may take over, he has experience but why would he for just one year?

Better keep herm or go get you head coach for a lifetime. You will not win in 09 but what the heck you “owe” herm another chance. No sure why?

  • January 17, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

Its not about what you owe Herm. Its about the development of all these young players. These young players seem to play hard for Herm so why cut him pay him and have most of the team dissappointed also Cowher and most good coaches are not coming this next year so why run with some shmuck for one season. Lay it out for Herm make a run at the playoffs or your gone after next year. I don’t care if Payton Manning came to KC in free agency we won’t make a SuperBowl run next year. Lets get these young guys ready and get rid of the one’s who don’t want to play.

  • January 17, 2009  - ED says:

Good point Chris. As for us drafting Sanchez or Stafford how about neither. Sanchez had one good year, and hasn’t had nearly the experience of Leinart or Palmer in college and some of you think he’s going to be franchise quarterback. Be for real. Leinart is struggling with 3 years of college experience and we think Sanchez with just one full year of college under his belt and not nearly the resume Leinart had in college is going to be an franchise quarterback. No way we should draft this guy in the 1st round with the #3 pick or any 1st round pick for that matter. And did I mention the guy has a bum knee. He still hasn’t prove he can consistently be healthy back to back seasons.

As for Stafford. I live in SEC country this guy is very inconsistent at times and he should have stayed in school as well to polish his skills. IN big games in the SEC this year this guy flopped as a quarterback and its only going to get worse in the NFL going up against tougher competition.

The smart thing the Chiefs can do is if they fill they can take a stand out franchise right tackle or guard, defensive end, or middle linebacker then take him. Seeing that those are the 4 weaknesses on this team all key positions to being a successful team. IF they feel the talent pool is about even throughout the first round at those positions trade down and get more picks.

And for all you Herm haters here’s a website that talks about why we should be thanking Herm for what he’s done for this organization and one of the main reasons why he needs to be give a opportunity to turn this thing around with a real GM inspite of how I or anyone else feels.

Hey, ED, I surmise that 2-14 means nothing, all those high draft picks on def. line means nothing, love affair with Brodie again nothing. You hermites will over look anything just so herm gets his final year.
