The Top Ten – Version #1
Now that the New Year’s Day bowl games are completed, there are only a handful of college players left who are still preparing to play a game.
The best among those finished with their seasons are pondering the future. Specifically, sophomore redshirts and juniors are trying to decide if they should enter the NFL Draft.
Underclassmen have until January 15 to submit their names to the NFL to be included in the ’09 talent pool. Despite comments last week from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell saying there would be no rookie wage cap next year, agents are still telling college players that if they want to guarantee the type of pay day that draft choices have received in recent year, ’09 is the year to jump.
We spent time talking with two NFL teams and scouts from two other clubs and pulled together the bobgretz.com top 10. This group includes players who have not yet declared for the draft, and in fact, may choose to stay in the college ranks for another season.
But the NFL guys all think the underclassmen on this list will jump.
We picked 10 because of the Chiefs position as the No. 3 choice in the first round. If the team uses that selection, their choice is in this list. Now, if they should decide to trade down, I wouldn’t expect them to go much beyond the 10th spot. If there are as many underclassmen jumping in as the league expects, the pick at No. 10 will be a very, very good player.
As the weeks and months go on, we’ll adjust this list accordingly, but here’s version No. 1.

*-underclassmen who have not yet declared for NFL Draft.

Do we really need Crabtree, we could trade back and pick up a draft pick and get Smith.
you can never have too many first round wide outs just ask matt millen and the detroit lions forget the line championships are won by drafting every “cant miss” wide out lol
Who do you guys think is better Stafford or Bradford?
neither stafford is too inconsistent and bradford is like most big 12 qbs a product of the spread offense I like sanchez he has a big arm and ran a pro style offense in college
OU runs a pro style offense
Stafford is the most Favre/Elway QB since the respective players were available to draft. Then their is the fact Mike Hagans the Texas head Regional scout is a family friend of the Staffords. If he’s available he’s coming to KC.
Favre/Elway? Never thought of those two being comparable, but ok.
I would like to see them drop down a few spots and pu aaron curry or maulauga. Then we can pu a DE or a wide receiver in the second round.
Stafford will not be a Chief, and he has major bust potential, i.e., David Carr. Bradford is David Klingler in my purview.
No, a nice LB or OT should be the choice in round 1, wherever the Chiefs draft.
Rin is certain KC Chiefs Head Coach 2009 Herm Edwards will make the right choice, again. HE’s The Man!
If both QB’s come out we’ll get a shot at one.
If only Stafford comes out and Detroit drafts him, and Smith is drafted by the Rams (most likely) than trade down, by all means (Rarely happens) Maulauga would be my target too, I’m not so high on either of the top two DE’s.
getting the supposed star qb shouldnt even be an option. Neither one of them stafford or bradford even look like decent qbs. We arent going to win anything with our anemic defense we need linebackers and a couple of really good defensive ends. DE’s we can probably pu in free agency but we need a jerod mayo/derrick thomas type linebacker.
forgot something get rid of gunther.
Tribal, your FOS.
The only thing that Stafford does like Farve is throw picks.
As for ‘nfl offense’, both stafford and bradford throw out of the shotgun. Majority of Stafford’s throws in the capital 1 bowl against Penn st. were out of the shotgun too.
Stafford has a great arm, but is too inconsistent. He could really use 1 more yr of college football. If you look at his numbers (completion percentage, qb rating, tds/int) it is very similar to brodie croyle. They are essentially the same player, except that Stafford is more durable and weighs 20lbs more than croyle.
Any one that just watched The Sugar Bowl, Should now see what I mean about Andre Smith. No Way they sack JPW 7 times with him in the game.
LT’s! Worth there weight in gold!
What does anyone know about Eugene Moore? Is this the guy that kept Albert from playing tackle at Virginia? If so, he’s someone to consider. Moore could be our OLT, and Albert could go to ORG or ORT. Maybe Moore just goes to ORT.
Descriptions I’ve read on Stafford appeared similiar to what I’d read about Matt Ryan last year. But we need a QB that can throw the ball coming from under the center, unless we are going to continue to run the spread. If that’s the case we already have our starting QB.
Maclin at number 4. Normally I would just say that it was to the honor of the fact that Mizzou probably have a lot of fans on this site. Since it is Bob Gretz I’m not going to claim that. It is interesting though.
No DE i the top10 is really not great in any way. That said, I’m faily certain that Everette Brown will move into the top 5/10 by draftday. He is so quick and fast. Just what we need.
This is, afterall, an opening list of top prospects. Much can and most likely will change before draft day. ITEMS:
New GM and his choice of head coach? Quite possibly and what philosophies each guy has about putting together a team.
Sr Bowl is still ahead where the top grads get to display their wares against top quality competition. Evaluation here often improves or plummets a player’s stock.
The Combine. Again, we’ve always seen wild ups and downs of the player stock market based on performance and those all important player interviews and background checks.
Factoring in all the above, it’s still way too early to get a real sense of where the Chiefs will go when they’re on the clock in April.
I’ve seen Maclin move up on a number of boards. As an MU alum it would be easy for me to be ridiculously excited about him, but he is VERY injury prone, and spends at least five plays off per game on the sidelines because of little injuries… I think a lot of NFL teams will see this as a negative, and I’m not so sure he’ll go in the top 10.
Also, neither Stafford nor Bradford run a spread offense. OU’s offense is nothing like Tech’s or Mizzou’s.
I’m also not completely sold on any of the top ten DE’s in the draft. I’ve seen several of USC’s games this season, and I’m probably more sold on Cushing’s skill as a LB than Malualuga’s (Malualuga whiffs A LOT and overpursues some plays), but drafting Malualuga (even at #3) would send a strong message that this team is going to get PHYSICAL in the middle. I would be excited to see Dorsey and Malualuga stuffing the run up the middle next season.
I hate to draft a LT in our spot since Albert has shown himself to be so magnificent in that role this season. I suppose you could grab Smith or Oher (whichever is still available) and move Albert to LG and Waters to RG…
Also, and this is just a thought, but the Chiefs might surprise everyone and draft the top RB in the draft since Larry Johnson will most likely be gone. A lot of new GMs will place their stamp on a franchise by drafting RB’s and QB’s immediately… that’s something no one is talking about.
There will be a good QB in the draft in the second and third rounds, including names like Freeman and Harrell.
It all depends on how these players grade out at the combine. I’m pretty excited!
Best thing Chiefs could do is trade down pick up more picks and get Everette Brown from Florida State. I’m pretty sure the Bengals and Raiders are willing to swap picks to move up to get Crabtree. Especially Oakland since the Bengals pick ahead of them. More then likely Cincy will be looking to get rid of Chad and resign TJ. Then draft another big play receiver to replace Chad.
But Everette Brown and Dorsey would make for a dominant defensive line for years to come. I would love to see us make this move. Bradford probably gone stay in school to avoid going to the LIons. And because Stafford is still inconsistent at times he probably will take the Mannings advice and stay in school as well.
ESPN reported Tebow is asking the NFL to advise him about his standing in the upcoming draft. Would he fit in KC.
Eli,
That’s an excellent analysis at this early stage. Keep up the good work. Hitch hiking on your RB comments, it will be interesting to see how well Knowshon Moreno does at the Combine if he comes out. That guy is something special.
Rin Tin Tin, You want to bet? Like I said The Head KC Chief regional scout in Texas is a family friend of the Staffords. Matt has an inside track when it comes to the Chiefs
tm1946
If Herm is retained and we continue to run the spread, I’d trust Tebow more than Thigpen to get the job done. His throwing mechanics are awful but the guy is a winner. If a new coach is brought in (more than likely) it would be hard to say if Tebow would fit. I believe Tebow should remain a QB in the NFL, and I think Chan Gailey would find a way to make him effective. But like Thigpen, I can’t see Tebow doing well under center for an entire game. He needs to work out of the gun, and have a lot of opportunities to scramble.
Thought you guys would be interested in this. ESPN’s Todd McShay doesn’t even rank Stafford in the top two among QBs! He likes Sanchez better. Here’s McShay’s top 15 QB list for what it’s worth.
1. Sam Bradford*, Oklahoma
2. Mark Sanchez*, USC
3. Matthew Stafford*, Georgia
4. Nate Davis*, Ball State
5. Josh Freeman*, Kansas State
6. Tim Tebow*, Florida
7. Graham Harrell, Texas Tech
8. Rhett Bomar, Sam Houston State
9. Mike Reilly, Central Washington
10. Drew Willy, Buffalo
11. Nate Brown, Central Arkansas
12. John Parker Wilson, Alabama
13. Chase Daniel, Missouri
14. Cullen Harper, Clemson
15. Curtis Painter, Purdue
Note that going into this season, senior QBs Cullen Harper (Clemson) and Curtis Painter (Purdue) were considered potential 1st rounders. After rocky senior seasons, these guys are mid to late round prospects right now. If the Chiefs don’t want to draft a QB with a high pick, nabbing one of these guys late could be interesting. They both have the size and arm strength to play in the NFL and now they’ve been pre-humbled. Perhaps diamonds in the rough?
We need to get Aaron Curry. He can be the guy that gets this defense back to a respectable level. He is uber talented and extremely versatile which is what this team needs. I also think that he can push DJ to play to his potential and if that happens then our LB corp would be scary.
The QBs in this draft are overrated and the depth of quality players in this draft will rival last year so we should be able to pick up several strong players in the draft and fill our other needs. Hopefully we can get something out of LJ and Tony G if he leaves.
Think about it, Bob works for the chiefs per say, and that is very very cool, I respect it however…
Anyone inside the KC organization will say we will take a Qb, a WR or a LT at 3, IMO this is so that the chiefs can trade out, I wont be happy with a QB, a WR or a LT…its take Rey at 3, trade out and take Rey, of course this can change with free agency…
I think much depends on the early part of free agency & what they are able to get there – if anything. I believe they’ll try to trade down some. If they can’t, and Stafford or Bradford are there, they’ll take them IF they grade out at the combine. I’m not sure they will because they’ll have to make throws accurately dropping back. If they don’t grade out so well, and stay at 3, I believe they’ll go OT. The OL is a MUST to be successful long-term. We have NO push from C over to the right. With bookend tackles, things become easier & guards are more easily found in later rounds.
If they trade down, I think they may go LB.
I like Sanchez better as well outside round 1. I thought the USC DE looked pretty good too.
Excellent post Eli!
“I hate to draft a LT in our spot since Albert has shown himself to be so magnificent in that role this season. I suppose you could grab Smith or Oher (whichever is still available) and move Albert to LG and Waters to RG”
TiminKC I think was the guy that originally had this thought….. IF (big if) we get a shot at Smith/Oher (preferably Smith) and they don’t trade Waters, every one on the left side takes one step to there right, Waters to Center, Albert to Guard and Smith/Oher Tackel. I really do think W.Smith and Jones showed a lot of improvement this past season so if the Chiefs could trade Waters, W.smith @ Center Jones as Right Guard. McIntosh played pretty well too, the last half of the season, he could hold down R. Tackle until someone can replace him. Taylor or (maybe Niswanger)
“Also, neither Stafford nor Bradford run a spread offense. OU’s offense is nothing like Tech’s or Mizzou’s.”
I keep saying OU runs a Pro Set style Offense.
“Also, and this is just a thought, but the Chiefs might surprise everyone and draft the top RB in the draft since Larry Johnson will most likely be gone. A lot of new GMs will place their stamp on a franchise by drafting RB’s and QB’s immediately… that’s something no one is talking about.”
Running Back is definitely a position of need for the Chiefs, But I would be disappointed if they use a #3 on a back.
As far as QB goes most people I’ve heard say Harrell won’t be coming out in fact many of the juniors and red shirt Soph. may not come out now that the league as announced that there will be no rookie cap in 2010. That could change things dramatically.
DE’s we agree 100% on. None worth a top 10.
I’d much rather the Chiefs take Monroe at OT over Smith or Oher. Monroe was even better than Branden Albert in college and they have experience playing together (chemistry) all ready. That’s only if they trade down though as pick 3 is probably a little high for Monroe.
I think people don’t understand how well Albert has done at LT. Moving him back inside would be a complete waste. He is extremely talented in both pass blocking and run blocking. We all want to draft a LT that is really good at pass protection but why wouldn’t you want your best T to be the LT position. If we draft a T then they will probably move them to the right side because we do already have a franchise LT in Albert. Smith is the only guy that I could see us drafting in the first round and he would be a great fit at RT.
Also Bradford does play in a spread offense even though it may not be a obvious as TT or Florida. He takes some snaps from C but the majority of his pass plays comes from the shotgun so that means that he plays in the spread.
Tribal Warfare says:
“Rin Tin Tin”
- yes TP- er, TW?
“You want to bet?”
- no need, I’m an independently wealthy canine… I bathe in the sunlight of my own reward.
“Like I said The Head KC Chief regional scout in Texas is a family friend of the Staffords.”
- and John Bunting was a personal friend of Dick Vermeil’s and recommended one Ryan Sims … ouch. But, that could never happen again. Huh. Right?
QB’s are differenty. Sure. Of course. That friend of the family is probably football perfect & odor free too.
Like Rin said, Stafford has major bust potential & I don’t see KC taking him. If they do, it will be the wrong choice, my opine. Insert Matt Ryan in place of Stafford (even knowing now how Ryan turned out) Rin would still take a pass. KC has several more pressing problems than QB. If they do not fix the other referenced talent cavities we have any QB we draft may well become the next Archie Manning. A drafted QB might make that one aspect better, but, all the other demerits will continue to stand out. Really it’s more a matter of which comes first, chicken or egg. There are different ways to build a team, so appears that we just disagree.
A team does NOT have to draft the QB before the other parts are in place. I still fondly recall the 1967 Oakland Raiders who had about everything a Championship team needs but a QB. They traded that season for Daryle Lamonica and he promptly took them to the AFL Championship and Superbowl in his very first season in OAK.
“Matt has an inside track when it comes to the Chiefs.”
- sad if true for, unforunately for him, Kaycee hasn’t had or been on the inside track football since 1971. Manning in NO – Jim Plunkett in NE, David Carr in HOU – Elway in DEN. The QB – any – cannot of his own doing sans other talent carry team to Championship.
Kaycee? We’ve miles to go yet afore a QB any will make a difference. We were the ’66 Miami Dolphins this season… come 2009, let’s just try & be the 1967 Dolphins afore we imagine ourselves ready to be the ’69, ’70, ’71 or 1972′s perfect version.
Baby steps.
I think we should take Aaron Curry at 3. I know alot of you so called “analysis” in here r high on the 2 lb’s at USC but they are both busts, and highly overrated. I stay n the south and had a chance 2 see alot of Wake Forest games and when I tell u this kid Curry is a stud trust and believe me…I wont be surprised if at the combine he dominates and his stock shoots threw the room! But the other 2 jokers out n California only exel b/c of the talent surronding the 2!
Being foolish is no reason for us to become fools. Offense is not our most pressing concerns. a good right tackle and guard in later rounds is ok. and we really have no need for a qb in the first. our #1 and most pressing concern is our lousy DEFENSE. We have a decent secondary. we need good lineman and linebackers. DEFENSE people is something we need. Without it, we would have a dan marino team or a chiefs vermeil team all over again. I want a super bowl. not just a playoff game.
Alex, You make some valid points about the LB’s at SC.
I too wonder how effective any of the 3 from SC will be when there collective talent goes down and their opponents talents rise.
I’ll be watching for more info on Curry.
We sure as hell don’t need to draft a bozworth!
I watched Curry play too and he can dominate on all levels. He looks like an elite prospect that could go to multiple probowls and not just play well like a lot of people that we have on the team already. We have a lot of solid players but are in need of playmakers and Curry looks every bit like that type of player.
Listen, andre smith would be a huge addition to our offensive line
I hope the Chiefs get a DE or an QB in the 1st round.
Shonn Greene in the 2nd round.
