I really wish this side was printed at the time of the Kcstar story. Too bad you didn't feel the need to set things straight back then, Bob.

Bob
Thanks for letting the sun shine on the issues of Arrowhead past. I remember the Gansz hatchet job by the Star almost like it was yesterday. Read it several times and always wondered since the story seemed sensationalized. I vaguely remember that Gansz tried to get his story out with a new conference also, but was rebuffed (did he ever get this chance even)? When I lived in Omaha in the early 90s I ran into another former KC Star employee working for the Omaha World Herald, Tom Shatel at a local establishment. I asked him if what was written about Gansz was true (I had not remembered it was a Mick Fish story). My recollection of what Shatel told me was the story was true and that Gansz was a "phony". I do remember the quoted word to this day. I asked him face-to-face and he gave me what I thought was a sincere answer. Why the heck would Tom lie? I am glad you set the story straight. While I never meet Gansz, he always seemed genuine to me. He also coached for many years in the NFL which is indication #1 he knew what he was doing and he helped the Rams win a Super Bowl. It is sad a good man passed from the earth.
I was much younger at the time and I bet I could have drafted better than Schaaf. However, so could a donkey with a "˜handful' of darts.
Keep it up Bob.

agreed steve, this bothered Frank and his wife for years, in 94 in Atlanta they were bitter, and they should be, it was wrong, and im glad Bob has cleared it up for chief fans everywhere who think poorly of him for that reason.

Bob - thanks for this story, especially the explanation about the KC Star story. I remember it well and it did call Gansz a liar. Worse, it made him sound like a wannabe when he had actually served his country honorably. Many don't realize he was an Air Force pilot before coaching at the Air Force Academy. Another quality feature at your great site. Thank you.

Bob, I agree on the greeting everyone the same way, he met me at 8 and treated me like a son because my father played for him at navy...just for that reason...went to falcons/rams/jags games every year to visit barb and see frank(who as you know was out faster than those who left in the third quarter)...he was already moving onto the following week, or the week after that. Frank Jr is the same way, but there is no one like Frank Gansz Sr, and there never will be, he taught me about special teams, and in high school at a school of 2k, my soph year, at 16, i was the special teams coach, because of coach gansz and his ability to teach.

Tony Horne's return vs the vikings led the rams to the super bowl, otherwise they get knocked out after the bye week.

Please if you find out about the service bob, email me, i hope you get the email address, my father and I would both fly out to attend.

thank you bob for writing this, he changed my life, my fathers life, and everyones life around him.

I am very close with frank jr as well, and I have not met a better person in my entire life. he was a second father to us all.

Bob,

Thanks for a great post and as Paul Harvey would say, now we know the rest of the story. I'm old enough to remember when he coached us and was fired. I also remember the things that were written at the time but never knew the behind the scenes story until now.
