Sunday Morning Cup O’Chiefs
From River Falls, Wisconsin
Rain expected here in the northwoods today. The day has dawned cloudy. The Chiefs have just one practice scheduled for this afternoon.
Glenn Dorsey and his signing have garnered the most attention in Camp Herm ‘08. Here’s my take on his signing and the havoc it causes with the Peterson Haters.
COUNTDOWN
It’s 11 days from the Chiefs pre-season opener against the Bears in Chicago. It’s 42 days to the regular season opener in Foxboro against the Patriots and it’s 49 days until the Chiefs return to Arrowhead Stadium for their regular season home opener against the Oakland Raiders.
And it’s 183 days until Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa.
A YEAR AGO AT THIS TIME
QB Casey Printers was getting a lot of playing time with the Chiefs offense during the 2007 pre-season. But that did not earn him a roster spot with the team. Printers returned to Canada and this year he’s playing with the Hamilton TigerCats. He’s averaging 197.4 yards passing per game with no touchdown throws and four interception. His CFL quarterback rating is 74.6. His rating last August with the Chiefs was 73.4 The TigerCats are 1-4 on the season.
FROM PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY
On this day in 1968, the Chiefs and Broncos played the second of what would be three Grocery Bowl games at Municipal Stadium. These games involved the rookies and first-year type players on both squads. On this day they played before 36,902 fans. The Broncos won 12-7, with the only KC touchdown coming when DE Aaron Brown returned an interception 25 yards for a score.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Peter King is with Brett Favre in Mississippi, where the retired/unretired QB has decided not to report for Packers camp today. He also says he did speak with Vikings head coach Brad Childress.
At Redskins camp we find a world completely different than the youngsters who dominated the action in River Falls. Rick Gosselin explores why older guys always seem to end up in Washington.
Up at the Patriots camp, the NFL’s best quarterback talked at length for the first time since New England lost the Super Bowl.
IN THE AFC WEST
- Tommy Kelly of the Raiders talks about the big-money deal he signed and replacing Warren Sapp on Oakland’s defensive front.
- San Diego columnist Nick Canepa calls the Chargers training camp the “second happiest place on earth.” No really, he did. Here it is.
- In Denver, they are expecting bigger contributions from the trio of defensive linemen the Broncos drafted last year: Marcus Thomas, Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder.

This is truly a great website Bob. Thanks for creating this and keep up the great work. I read it daily.
Have always enjoyed your work. Look foward to more of the same here. Great reading.
Bob your Chief coverage is great. When you discuss the team, it’s playing personnel, etc, you’re unparralleled. But when you get in Chief Homer defend mode, defending any and every action of Carl, or the current Head Coach(only WHILE he’s the current Head Coach, you’ll freely question him when he moves on, as you have rightfully done about Vermeil) you lose many Chief fans. Carl is not the Devil Whitlock portrays him as, nor is he the perfect, model, never wrong GM you portray him as. I understand you can’t be fully objective on the Chiefs website, but I was hoping on your own website, you’d drop the defend mode sometimes, and question Carl and/or the current Head Coach, Herm in this case when they deserve to be questionned, which has been often. Good luck with this site and viva the far too long delayed youth movement finally happenning.
Mark,
Not to disagree, but Gretz was very critical of Vermeil WHILE he was head coach. But the bigger issue is this:
Jack Harry and Jason Whitlock constantly scream fire in a crowded movie house. Jack Harry is constantly going out on a limb and crashing to the ground. For instance, last Friday on the 10:00 KSHB newscast - “I’ll tell you why Carl is not going to be able to sign his number one draft pick” – KABOOM! Or from previous seasons, “Priest Holmes will never play again” – CRACK! Just last year, he spend three weeks telling us that Clark Hunt himself told him that Carl Peterson would not return this season. Then when Clark went on TV stating Carl would remain President & GM, Jack thanked Clark for the personal interview he granted. Never once saying – “my bad.”
Who is pointing out that movie house isn’t on fire? Who other has said, Carl Peterson isn’t as incompetent as other GMs in the league? When Gretz does this – the above mentioned throw in the “puppet” label. Maybe Gretz defending CP is not his most journalistic unbiased work – but at its worst, it doesn’t even compare to the National Inquirer effort of others – IMHO.
Gretz gets the facts right 99% (maybe 100%) of the time. He is the most reliable source I can find. If I find value in his opinions of players, I need to also trust that he may have inside information to the front office and entire workings of the organization.
For some reason, I feel compelled to defend Bob on this issue. Maybe Bob’s feels the same way over Carl.
Just my two cents.
Dober, I actually had thought of it that way. We either trust a source, or not. And you are right about JH as well. I guess controversy sells.
Interestingly enough…the “homer” label got started after Gretz called out the media for inaccuracies. The aforementioned KC Star writer didn’t like Gretz pointing out his lack of journalistic integrity and retaliated with a slew of articles. He has carried this torch for years to the detriment of good judgment. Last year he wrote the “top three things” he would do as president/GM or the Chiefs. Number one on the list wasn’t even football related. Are we supposed to trust that kind of judgment when he says “Carl MUST go!” And all of this under the guise of “Keepin’ it real.”
And two years ago, after the Chiefs playoff loss, Jack Harry did 30 seconds on the team’s loss in Indy. Then proceeded to do 3 ½ minutes on Carl Peterson and Bob Gretz. How did Gretz make up 50% of this story?
Bottom line – Gretz is a damn good reporter. If he feels something is worthy of spending his time on, maybe we should try to read it objectively.
It’s Bob site…maybe he WANTS to write about Carl. Why are you assuming he feels he HAS to write about him?
