Somewhere His Dad Is Smiling

It was graduation weekend in Columbia at the University of Missouri over the weekend as the school handed out more than 5,200 undergraduate and graduate degrees.

One of those picking up an undergraduate degree was Derrion Thomas, the son of Chiefs and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas. Among Thomas’ children, Derrion was of the age that his father’s death in February 2000 was a very real and emotional event.

But Derrion’s support system was strong and after graduating from Blue Springs South High School, he went to Fort Scott Community College and then Missouri and earned his bachelor of arts degree in psychology with a minor in business.

This would have been a special moment for Derrick Thomas. Just before his death from complications caused from an auto accident, D.T. was finishing up his requirements to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama. It was 11 years after he left school to play for the Chiefs as the fourth player selected in the 1989 NFL Draft.

Last season, Derrion played in the Tigers season opening game and then did not play the rest of the season. He’s listed as 6-2, 240 pounds and was playing at defensive end for Mizzou.

I’m sure you’re right Bob. I’m guessing his grandfather is as well. Looks like his dad.

John, sometimes the acorn falls straight down the tree.

Sometimes it falls and rolls a little.

Sometimes a damn bird picks up the seed and carries it off.

Derrion may not be the football player his dad was but I’m hoping he’s smarter.

Let’s see where his acorn falls.
