She’s Gone

Early Wednesday morning Anita passed away after a six-month fight with cancer.

She’s no longer in pain. She is not suffering anymore. We knew the end was coming and we thought we were ready, but there’s no way to prepare for the moment. She left us way too early. Melanoma is a bastard that was unfazed by radiation, drugs and surgery. Anita fought hard, but it was a foe simply too well entrenched.

Thank you for the prayers and encouragement offered in recent weeks and months. In the last 10 days I’ve lost two of my best friends and two souls I loved very much. Nothing in my life prepared me for this overdose of death and I do not know what the future will bring. We will say good bye to Anita in the days ahead and after that . . . I just don’t know. There is exhaustion physically, emotionally, financially and mentally.

I wish I had answers, but right now I’m not even sure what the questions are.

Bob, I am truly sorry. Go grieve and don’t even think about the questions. The answers will come all by themselves.

Go take the love and support of those around you. You, like most of us, probably have no clue how strong that can be.

When you feel like football again, you know where we are. I hope you can feel our support.

  • February 6, 2014  - Doug says:

After dealing with the shock, numbness, grief and anger that you feel after helping your loved ones fight cancer, you get through the funeral and then start to recover. The funeral really helps because you realize just how much your loved ones meant, how special they were, and how lucky you were to have known them. Get some sleep, take care of yourself, make sure your other loved ones are doing alright, and then you can start to pick up the pieces. I am so sorry you had to go through this. There is no sugar coating it. It sucks, but the sun will shine on you again and if you focus on the good times you can recover even stronger.

  • February 6, 2014  - JoplinChiefsFan says:

My heart simply sank when I followed my daily routine of checking out bobgretz.com and saw the headline regarding Anita. Just as you don’t have answers and are not sure of the questions, I simply don’t have any words of wisdom that can take away the pain you feel. There aren’t any. However, may you find some degree of strength and comfort knowing that so many people–whom you’ve never met–are hurting with you and praying for you. Take care my friend.
