Seeds Of QB Controversy? … Wednesday Cup O’Chiefs

For years, Chiefs fans always railed about the fact that the team never developed its own quarterback.

Once Len Dawson retired, they tried with guys like Steve Fuller and Todd Blackledge, but ultimately no matter who was in charge they usually went with veterans, guys like Bill Kenney, Steve DeBerg, David Krieg, some guy named Montana, Elvis Grbac, Rich Gannon and Trent Green.

Developing a young quarterback takes an awful lot of patience. It takes time. It’s painful and sometimes it’s messy.

A pair of games into the 2009 season, it already appears that some media and fans have absolutely no patience.

How else to describe the tavern talk and talk show babble that Todd Haley should replace Matt Cassel (right) after one start as the Chiefs quarterback. The call has gone out for Brodie Croyle to be the man. Yes that’s the same Brodie Croyle that so many lost faith in over the last few years because he couldn’t stay healthy.

Croyle’s performance against Baltimore and Cassel’s efforts in last Sunday’s loss to Oakland has some people thinking a change must be made. Fueled by the $63 million contract and $28 million guaranteed that the Chiefs handed Cassel before the season started, some of the red and gold faithful figured they were getting a polished product.

They forgot that Cassel’s entire NFL starting experience was just 15 games for a football team that run by one of the best coaches in the business and with a pair of top flight receivers in Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

Cassel is not a refined product, and he showed that against the Raiders with two interceptions and that pass at the end of the first half that should have been two rows into the stands and not in the hands of RB Dantrell Savage.

Developing quarterbacks make mistakes, they throw passes they should not, they have chinks in their game that must be corrected. That only gets done one way, and that’s playing.

So now we have the seed planted for a quarterback controversy among the public. Head coach Todd Haley did nothing but water that seed with his comments during a Tuesday press conference.

“I like a lot about this guy,” Haley said of Cassel. “Anybody watching you can see the competitiveness; here’s a guy that is injured that was not running with that thought in his mind. He added 34 yards of rushing to our game and when you do that, it’s positive.

“That being said, I’m excited about Brodie’s progress. Brodie getting to play in the first game, got his feet under him, started to gain some confidence and that was clear in this past week’s practices. I expect all those guys to improve every week. That’s their job and my job to make our quarterback better every day.”

That brought the inevitable questions about Cassel’s status, whether he would consider pulling him in favor of Croyle. If anybody was expected a blanket commitment for Cassel and the starting job from his head coach, they sure did not get it.

Media question: A lot of head coaches around the league say we can’t have this distraction, this is my guy, and this is the way it’s got to be.”

Haley: “Not with me. Just from past experience, that’s all I can go by.”

The head coach then outlined that experience, how with the Jets on Bill Parcells staff then had Glen Foley, but signed Vinny Testaverde late and he won the job in three weeks. He pointed to his time in Dallas, where the Cowboys made a deal for Drew Bledsoe, but eventually replaced him with the unproved Tony Romo.

And the more known situation last year, where the Arizona Cardinals bypassed No. 1 draft choice Matt Leinart and started veteran Kurt Warner, who at the time was considered on his last NFL legs. Leinart had the status and the contract, but Warner took the team to the Super Bowl.

Most NFL coaches sprint away from a possible quarterback controversy. Marty Schottenheimer always referred to his final playing days with the then Boston Patriots and how the team became divided over whether Joe Kapp or Mike Taliaferro should be the starting quarterback. Schottenheimer said many times that’s why he stuck with one quarterback. It’s why after that first season he picked DeBerg, over guys like Ron Jaworski and Steve Pelluer, even though DeBerg drove him crazy with some of his turnovers. That worked out for him in 1990 and 1991. It’s why he stuck with Grbac in 1997 when he came back from an injury, and didn’t go with Gannon. That really didn’t work out so well.

But Todd Haley didn’t shy away from watering the quarterback controversy seed. Is that a sign of his inexperience as a head coach? Or is there something else at play here, some message he’s trying to send to every player wearing a red jersey?

We don’t have enough evidence of Haley and his ways just yet to make a definitive answer, but there’s no question that he believes competition is good for this football team. No matter the position.

“You’ve got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win,” Haley said. “If that means another quarterback is in there than Matt Cassel, then sign me up.

“I thought Brodie Croyle went into a very difficult situation, a hostile environment against a very good defense and he looked like an NFL quarterback. He gave us a legitimate chance to win. He executed the game plan the way he was asked to execute it, he protected the football. From that week and add in last week’s practice, I’ve seen Brodie Croyle continue to improve. That’s all we are asking these guys to do.

“All of these guys need to understand, we are going to continue to keep pushing and prodding, trying to figure who of these guys are that we are going to get this thing going with. That is a process, and it is a process that you don’t necessarily find the answers in the OTAs or pre-season. Once you are in these games, some of those answers become clear and some of them become crystal clear.”

And, here’s the key point that Chiefs fans, players and the media need to remember when considering how Haley is handling this situation.

“Generally with poor teams, there is not a lot of competition,” said Haley. “There are a lot of guys that know they are starting regardless of who is back there. That doesn’t happen on the good teams I’ve been lucky enough to be part of; there’s somebody pushing each and every player.”

Isn’t a team’s starting quarterback a different animal than other positions?

“Not with me,” said Haley. “That’s just form past experience, that’s all I can go by. I’m a rookie head coach trying to get this right.”

If Brodie Croyle is truly pushing Matt Cassel, then the Chiefs will only get better, controversy and all, and Haley will have gotten it right.

One thing for sure is that two games into a season of remarkable change it’s way too early to make definitive decisions about most everything involving this football team.

Everyone wanted change. Well, here it is. Patience people, patience.

FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY

On September 23, 1962, the Dallas Texans beat the Oakland 26-16 at Frank Youell Field in Oakland. A crowd of 12,500 saw Dallas jump to 16-10 lead at half-time, as QB Len Dawson and WR Chris Burford hooked up for a pair of TD passes of 12 and seven yards. Burford later caught a six-yard scoring pass and K Durwood Pennington kicked a pair of FGs. The Texans defense had four interceptions, as FS Johnny Robinson grabbed two and LB E.J. Holub and S Bobby Hunt each h ad one. CB Dave Grayson contributed a 59-yard kickoff return.

On September 23, 1979, the Chiefs beat the Oakland Raiders 35-7 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in beating their biggest rival. J.T. Smith returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. At the time it established a new franchise record for longest punt return. FS Gary Barbaro returned an interception 70 yards for a score, picking off Ken Stabler’s pass. The offense had a pair of short TD runs by FB Arnold Morgado and a 19-yard TD pass from QB Steve Fuller to WR Steve Gaunty. The Chiefs defense allowed the Raiders just 121 offensive yards.

On September 23, 1990, the Chiefs beat the Packers 17-3 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. It was a defensive struggle in this one, and the Chiefs “D” won out with interceptions by CBs Kevin Ross and Stan Petry, who returned his 33 yards for a touchdown. They also had seven sacks of Packers QB Don Majkowski, including 2.5 from DT Dan Saleaumua and two from DE Leonard Griffin. Christian Okoye ran 23 times for 122 yards and scored on a five-yard run.

On September 23, 2001, the Chiefs lost at home to the New York Giants 13-3 at Arrowhead Stadium, in a game that was postponed for a week because of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The Chiefs never got the offense going, putting up just 11 first downs and 266 yards of total offense. The only points came on a third quarter, 33-yard FG by K Todd Peterson. The Chiefs defense had three interceptions, from CB Ray Crockett, CB Eric Warfield and LB Glenn Cadrez.

SAY A SPECIAL HAPPY BIRTHDAY …

Born on September 23, 1943 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania was Martin Edward Schottenheimer. He attended Ft. Cherry High School in McDonald, PA, the University of Pittsburgh and then was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 1965 AFL Draft. Schottenheimer played four seasons for the Bills and then spent two seasons with the Boston Patriots. He appeared in 79 games over those six seasons and had six career interceptions. In 1967, Schottenheimer returned one of those interception 45 yards for his only pro touchdown.

After getting into the business world upon retirement, he turned to coaching and in 1989 he was named the seventh head coach in Chiefs history. He spent 10 seasons (1989-98) directing the Chiefs, posting an overall record of 104-65-1, the best winning percentage in club history at .615, just a fraction better than that of Hank Stram. Under Schottenheimer, the Chiefs had nine winning seasons and seven seasons in the playoffs. Marty resigned after the 1998 season, but returned to coaching in 2001 with the Washington Redskins and then later the San Diego Chargers. Along with his wife Pat, they now live near Lake Norman, North Carolina.

Oh come on.. QB Controversy my ass!
Haley didn’t ask Croyle to do much of anything in the Baltimore game. He did play well, no argument there, but this thing is just typical writers.

    “Let’s make a feather into 10 chickens!”

Im glad Haley has a “the best guy plays” mentality, but Croyle has had a shot at the starting job for 2 years, and he hasn’t made anything out of it..
    Fact!

Just got on with the next game..

John Elway –Brett Farve–Chad Pennington–and that’s starting to talk about it .
BUT I am also the same guy that wrote in here and said Sanches is a must and KC had the draft pick’s and position to pick him .
Last year –same thing , KC should jumped on Joe Flacco , but how in the heck would I know anything , yes you HAVE to have the best of the best to start with . That first group took a little longer before they got good . But even Payton dosen’t win them all , he had to wait till they had the money to get more of a better group around him .
I say shoot the tight end’s that the ball’s bounce out of those rubber hand’s .
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice spent hunder’s & hunder’s of hour’s praticing together and thousand’s passing and running rout’s till Joe could take his steps back and throw ( BLIND FOLDED) he did not have to think where Jery was , he knew !
This does not happen over night .
Then again , what I say when and where has little meaning , O-WELL

  • September 23, 2009  - Josh says:

There should be no controversy. Croyle is a back-up quality QB with the same number of interceptions as touchdowns and ZERO WINS in 13 games played (eight starts, I think?). He’s efficient, but he doesn’t have “it”, that un-quantifiable factor that goes into establishing a QB as a hands-down starter.

  • September 23, 2009  - Harold C. says:

It’s good if Cassel feel pressure to do well. But that is all it is….pressure….competition in the organization. I don’t know if I would call it a controversy or even a brewing controversy. Sure a few fans want Brodie….I bet a few still want Thigpen too. When has that been any different? How many fans does it take to call it a controversy?

Todd Haley is now accepting invitations to his Don Quixote style of head coaching in the NFL. Applicants are asked to sign up early as plenty of spaces still remain.

  • September 23, 2009  - MattyMc44 says:

Good gosh, this is such a joke. Is the KC media so tired, bored, or in need to sell a story that they have to generate this controversy.

Brodie had a nice first game. But, Cassel did not play as bad as those impatient ones think. Heck, the 2nd interception was a helluva paly by Huff.

I know one thing for sure, I sooooo tired of having to read about the contact numbers in EVERY article about Matt Cassel. It’s professional sports, people get pad a lot of money whether they are worth it or not.

Haley could shut this talk up but chooses not to. He alone is fanning the flames. As a fan, I would like to believe the coach can make a decision on a QB and show confidence in his choice. 31 other coaches seem able to do it–through good times and bad. Haley was confident enough to fire the OC, but he’s starting to look wishy-washy on the team’s most important position. From a fan’s perspective, this is not inspiring confidence in the coach.

  • September 23, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

Cassel is still the guy to go with. First regular season start for KC. Had been out for a couple of weeks. Coming off an injury. He made a couple of mistakes, but really played fairly well under the circumstances. Give the guy a break. He’ll be a good Quarterback for this team. However, he’s not going to walk on water. So some people need to stop expecting him to.

said Haley. “I’m a rookie head coach trying to get this right.”

I think some people need to cut Haley a break, too. He understands that he’s going to make mistakes. Everyone else needs to understand that, too. It’s whether or not he learns from those mistakes and doesn’t repeat them that will make or break him. He’s a rookie head coach that took over one of the worst teams in the NFL. Not exactly a piece of cake, ya know?

  • September 23, 2009  - ED says:

Bob here you go with the BS. IF you Chiefs fans go to kcchiefs.com trust me you want leave after watching Haley press conference thinking its a quarterback controversy. Why do you media guys have to stir the pot just to sell papers. I mean its so many other things and stories you can write about this team. Their is no controversy. It amazes me how the media last year was trying run Croyle out of town because of the injuries and are now after two games calling for him to save the day. You guys (media) are acting like a bunch of overreactive fans after losses on Monday morning. You’re going so much off emotion than you are actual logic. Emotions only make you look foolish when you speak on them or even react on emotions.

Bottom line the KC media will look like idiots for even saying this mid-season and beyond. Truth is Cassell hasn’t played in almost a month and was rusty Sunday. And he still put us in position to win the game. Now all of sudden you clowns want to put the franchise in the hands of a guy who over last 3 years has proven he couldn’t stay healthy. LMAO. what a bunch of flip floppers.

There is indeed QB controversy in Kansas City- as there should be – Brodie Croyle is THE BEST QB on the Chiefs team – there is no question about it. Saying he is not is to deny the obvious.

Yup, Brodie Croyle is THE MAN!

To say mutt ca$$el was better in 2008 has as much relevance right now – zero – as to say Croyle was injured last season. A non sequitur be the ‘what have you done for me lately’ purview.

Right now ca$$el is playing very poorly & mutt is injured. Right now Croyle’s playing exceptionally well and right now he is of sound body. He should thus and WILL BE the Chiefs starting QB sooner if not later.

Croyle was also the better QB- the best in fact – during training camp too according to most folks. Measure on the field games thence as well despite not having the advantage of playing with the same supporting cast.

ca$$el has been (double entendre) nee is a one year wonder – a giant BUST – and a $63 million waste. He is Pelluer without the Cowboys – and Grbac sans the Elvis. Take away all the zero’s behind ca$$els cap hit & what you’re left with is…a myth.

The sooner he is relieved of his duties – like & same – the better the Chiefs will be.

As all Chiefs fans, Rin looks forward to Brodie Croyle leading the team at QB!

The only Chiefs QB controversy is among the KC media. Up until this morning, I assumed BG was a part of that. Haley said Cassel needs to perform….duh, he says that about all 53 guys.

Any one who saw the first two games, saw a clear difference in talent, leadership, and potential between Cassel and Croyle. Both are young guys but Cassel can be a top 5 QB in the NFL if we works at it.

Yes, Cassel made some boneheaded plays Sunday. Young guys do that. They also learn and grow. It’s not like we are going to miss the playoffs this year because we are developing a QB. This is a rebuilding year where we will steal some games and compete the next several years.

  • September 23, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

Wow, Rin Tin Tin. I’ve never seen so much bullcrap crammed into such a small space. Congratulations. You da man!

If it not bad enough to read “what’s his face’s” negative crap on here all the time or “ripem’s” out of the closet battle cry that he is Donkey fan, it’s Bob’s negativity toward the Chiefs in general. Cassel DOES NOT have jack crap for a line! What QB is going to be successful in the NFL with out a good O-Line??? Name ONE! Granted they gave him some time on Sunday for a change…but it was against the Raiders too. This guy (Cassel)is coming off an injury that most QB’s play in fear of reinjuring and he played with no fear! He was running, sliding like he didnt care if he hurt himself, he wanted to win. Leave Cassel alone and just let him do his job without all of the HATE!
Grodie Boyle? GIVE ME A BREAK!! If he didnt hurt himself last year he would have lost his job to Huard anyway! Boyle is not the answer!! Thiggy is more or less gone anyway! Quit this negative crap! Can we not just get behind our QB for a change? Seriously!

  • September 23, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

Rin remembers another QB controversy – Len Dawson and Pete Beathard. That one ended with a trade in 1967.

Both were #1 picks – both came with requisite big college resumes, Purdue Len and USC Pete. One was young – Dawson – the other was younger – Pete.

6′0 190 was #16, 6′1 1/2 205-210 was #10. One had a howitzer for an arm – better than Joe Namath’s according to some. The other one had the ability to thread a needle – with a football – ‘accuracy’ his middle name.

For almost 3 1/2 years the bigger of the two sat on the bench more often than not, the more svelte one led the team to mixed results in Kansas City.
Fans in Kaycee as media were clamoring for Pistol Pete to replace Laconic Len. Twas The Gunslinger vs The Technician.

Then came 1966 – year the Chiefs finally arrived in Kansas City as a football team – the year of victory as described by the play-by-play man Tom Headrick. That was the difference then & will be the difference now – the ‘66 Chiefs were a team on the verge of greatness courtesy a great coach, the ‘09 Chiefs are on the precipice nee verge of falling off a cliff an in over his head – so that by the time KC’s good again mutt & Brodie will all likely be gone; yes it’s that bad thanks to & & jr.

It doesn’t matter really who plays QB for Kaycee – as a former MLB Manager Leo ‘The Lip’ Durocher said reference the baseball Commissioner and his office: “you could put a stick in his chair & do just as well.” This team is bad as in NFL WORST.

mutt is the stick in KC, Brodie Croyle the straw that will break the Coach’s back if he doesn’t do as he should and replace mutt ca$$el with Croyle.

Hank Stram made the right choice yesterday…will ‘check’ do the same? That he’s thinking of making a QB change already in KC is a good thing and gives hope for the future…wee as it be.

If the defense would have stopped Oakland on their final drive last Sunday like they should have, this topic would have never even brought up. Don’t forget, Cassel led KC on what should have been the game-winning drive late in the 4th quarter. The fact is, the defense went soft and allowed Oakland to march straight down the field and score. I’m a little lost as to why anyone would possibly think that starting Croyle over Cassel at quarterback going to change that?

Like he’s been going FULL retard since he was born. I don’t want to offend anybody that has mentally handicap people around them or in their families, but this is all the more reason not to HATE Rin!

All I know is this, M.Sanchez is 2-0 against 2 good football teams this year and he is a rookie with a suspect supporting cast and Cassell is 0-2 with the Chiefs, lost a game 2 one of the worst franchise in the last 10 years and he’s a veteran QB. Just saying!!!

Someone continues to have fun posting under my board name. Memo to Bob: Pricing for the privilege and requiring a login are a couple of things to consider, and DO to preserve this quality site.

Short of that, it’s starting to circle the drain.

    FYI:

    - “Cassel” has only one “l”
    - Cassel only started one game, thus is 0-1
    - I didn’t realize QBs are the only reason teams win/lose. What are the other 23 starters for again?

The Jets are #1 in the NFL in total defense; #13 in total offense. Can you guess the biggest reason they’re 2-0?

  • September 23, 2009  - Ian says:

Rin don’t get used to this but I agree with you, I have always since day one thought that Croyle had the most talent of a Qb on the Chiefs roster but he would never be a starter because he will never be able to stay healthy, I still believe that and that is why I would choose mat cassel over him but I agree I believe that Croyle has the better arm and has looked like the better qb

  • September 23, 2009  - Pro Scout says:

Cassel may not have been sharp on Sunday, but he has that fire in him that inspires team mates and fans. It’s obvious watching him play that he is super athletic, confident, and has a great arm. Croyle has the arm, but every pass he throws is a laser beam which makes him ineffective on screens, fades, and long passes down the sideline. He can’t drop a pass into a bucket, he throw right THROUGH the bucket. He’s looking like a very solid 2nd string QB. If he is the next Billy Volek, then he will be an excellent player to have on our team. However, I’ve seen nothing out of Croyle, even when healthy, that would leave me to believe that he is capable of leading us to the playoffs even he had a strong supporting cast.

Cassel is by far our best option and the KC media is proving as inept and lazy as ever for blowing up this Haley press conference.

  • September 23, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

Cassel –Cassel –Cassel over and over , WHERE are the passes that were laying on the ground at the feet of the tight end’s that droped them like if I catch this I might get slamed , I’m talking about some easy catches that were muffed like (O-WELL)
Matt would you throw the ball to those guy’s or would you just run on that bad knee ???
I think if you are a tight end and played dropise that you might think different if you KNEW for sure that at midnight there was place reserved for you at the ROPE to hang . And that ain’t the name of a bar !!

Stay in the backfield and block if your NOT going to catch every pass no matter what .
What about all the catches at the COMBINE , but never in or on a playing field !
    Put’s a lot HEET on QB’s

  • September 23, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

lol… well the argument against the defense was there last year also when thigpen had the chiefs in about 9-10 games that should have been wins if the defense would have just held up the opponents O… Same complaint this year different QB…

I dont really think that Huff made a great play on a ball that was overthrown with two deep safeties, it was inevitable that it would get picked… he did have to run to the ball and grab it but a Safety should make that play as bad as it was overthrown…

Croyle looked good against a better Defense, Cassell had a rough game against a division rival, the QB ratings matter or they wouldn’t be a viable statistic always brought up. Also, I dont think I saw competitiveness from Cassell yea he ran the ball, ok so did thiggy. Cassell with all of his great decision making never looked downfield after his initial flush from the pocket, only where he was going to run to, this is something he needs to stand in the pocket and find someone to throw it too.

  • September 23, 2009  - ILChiefsFan says:

“Croyle looked good against a better Defense”

Better rushing defense? Sure. Better passing defense? Have yet to see proof of that.

I agree Cassel has a lot of improving to do; he was indecisive at times, stared down some receivers, threw checkdowns with open receivers downfield, etc. That doesn’t mean Croyle would have produced a better outcome.

  • September 23, 2009  - Bakjon says:

Rin has had a great week so far. His favorite coach was on TV this morning, Haley talks about not hesitating to pull Cassell for his favorite QB, the Chiefs are 0-2, and the history of the AFL being on TV. That being said, Cassell is the best choice for QB at the moment because right now he gives the Chiefs the best chance to win. Granted he made some bad plays on Sunday but hasn’t every QB no matter how great had some bad moments as well. Croyle may possess the best arm but the Chiefs have lost every one of his starts. Thigpen who some have suggested should be the starter has only won one of starts. As Cassell shakes off the rust the Chiefs will get better as a team. Who knows, if Cassell can eliminate last Sunday’s mistakes against the Eagles maybe KC might upset Philadelphia.

  • September 24, 2009  - ED says:

Agreed Bakjon. This is little to do about nothing. People making too big of deal about Cassell bad game when he clearly was rusty. Please don’t start comparisons with Tyler because after several games last played by Tyler he still looked rusty at times with his inaccuracy. I like Tyler but he’s still too raw to be a starting quarterback. Croyle has great arm but still hasn’t prove he can stay healthy for 16 games. Cassell has been a winner in this league. He show that competitive fire when firing up the crowd with that first down chop on a QB sneak. This guy learned from Brady so he know show to prepare himself for games. And even Brady gave his stamp of approval on this guy unquestion leadership.

Also keep in mind this the same guy who last yr people were saying the Pats should keep because he was younger than Brady and was saying trade Brady and keep Cassell. Now all of sudden he’s chop liver. Media and fans are such flip floppers its ridiculous. Bottom line as Cassell get more games under his belts the wins will start to come because of this guy. He’s got good upside and knows how to win. Pioli was been money about two things as a Gm. Kickers and quarterbacks. HE was money about Vinatari, Gradkowski, and Succop. He was money with Brady and will be money about Cassell.

“Croyle may possess the best arm”

    - there’s no question about it… do we hear any dissenters? Going once – going twice – SOLD!

“but the Chiefs have lost every one of his starts.”

    - they’ve also lost every one of ca$$el’$ starts in 2009 – so much for diametric opposites…

“Thigpen who some have suggested should be the starter has only won one of starts.”

    - only 1 – which might as well be a ($63) million compared to the little boy with the tender knee & the 0 for ever line next to his winning % in KC…

“As Cassell shakes off the rust the Chiefs will get better as a team.”

    - right… ‘check’

“Who knows, if Cassell can eliminate last Sunday’s mistakes against the Eagles maybe KC might upset Philadelphia.”

    - answer: what nee ‘all’ a fool knows: ‘if’… ‘maybe’…

    heh heh heh!
