Saturday Morning Cup O’Chiefs
From River Falls, Wisconsin
It’s REAL FOOTBALL this morning here in the land of beer and cheese. That’s if Mother Nature cooperates. The Chiefs have two practices today, the first one starting at 8:30 a.m. and the players will be in full pads. Finally, football as it’s supposed to be played! We’ll have updates for you after both workouts.
Glenn Dorsey will be in town today. Check our post for an update on the Dorsey situation.
COUNTDOWN
It’s 12 days from the Chiefs pre-season opener against the Bears in Chicago. It’s 43 days to the regular season opener in Foxboro against the Patriots and it’s 50 days until the Chiefs return to Arrowhead Stadium for their regular season home opener against the Oakland Raiders.
GOOD CHIEFS STORY
We will always try to alert you to good stories about the Chiefs that appear in any forum. Check out this story by Rick Dean of the Topeka Capital Journal about Brendan Albert with the comments of Kansas State head coach Ron Prince. In Albert’s first year at the University of Virginia, Prince was his position coach and offensive coordinator.
FAMILIAR PROBLEM
Greg Wesley has already missed practice time with the Raiders because of back spasms. The Raiders will not extend much wiggle room for Wesley since they signed him for a veteran’s minimum contract and he did not receive a signing bonus.
Apparently the Raiders were the only team that made him a legitimate offer.
OLD FACE IN NEW PLACE
Out at the Raiders Asylum, head coach Lane Kiffin has confirmed that Paul Hackett has been hired by the team. Hackett coached last year in Tampa Bay and was thought retired. Hackett supposedly will not work day-to-day with the Raiders players. Instead, he’s been hired to scout the Raiders upcoming opponent. “He won’t be involved in any coaching or working with the players,” said Kiffin.
Well, at least he won’t be if that’s OK with Al Davis!
Connection: did you know that when Herm Edwards started his college career at the University of California-Berkley, Hackett was a GA on the coaching staff there. GA stands for graduate assistant, or basically unpaid coaching intern. And Herm’s tutor in the athletic department was Elizabeth Hackett, Paul’s wife.
FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY
Have you been a Chiefs fan long enough to remember the old Milgram’s Grocery Bowl? For three or four years the Chiefs rookies would have a game each July against the Denver Broncos rookies. It was sponsored by the old Milgram grocery stores. Well, on this date in 1969 the Chiefs and Broncos rookies met at Municipal Stadium. The Chiefs picked up a 21-0 victory before 33,088 fans. Rookie quarterback Mike Livingston ran for 64 yards on seven carries and he was 13 of 23 throwing the ball for 195 yards and one touchdown. The Chiefs TDs were scored by Maurice LeBlanc, John Pleasant and Ben Hart. None of the trio stuck with the team. LeBlanc was out of LSU, Pleasant out of Alabama State and Hart was from Oklahoma.
