Released by the Raiders in a salary cap move, CB Stanford Routt has become a member of the Chiefs.
Routt got a 3-year deal for between $19.5 and $20 million.
It’s a good opening for the Chiefs as they head toward the start of NFL free agency. But it likely signals the end of CB Brandon Carr’s career with the Chiefs. He will become an unrestricted free agent in a few weeks.
More later.

I think it is a good move, great if we resign Carr. I think Carr is money hungry and the Chiefs are trying to show him that he is not going to get the money that he wants. If Carr is not going to resign with the Chiefs then I think they will either Franchise Tag him and trade him off like Asante Samuel and Deion Branch was traded from the Pats during their best years. Or let him walk and get a comp pick for him next year. Routt two years ago was the #1 CB according to PFF and #19 last year. Carr was #21 last year covering #2 WR’s while Routt was covering #1 WR’s. I think Routt is very close in terms of skill to Carr and I really like the move. Good start to the offseason!

Losing Carr sucks. Franchise him and try to work a trade? Hate to part ways with a player of his stature and get nothing.

I can’t buy enough bullets to swallow. Carr can hold his own. We need a QB, a backup QB (anyone watch Green Bay last season?) about 3 guys on the offensive line, and a return man who can find pay dirt. Why is this front office intent on bringing talent into areas where we are sufficient? We need to pull a New Orleans and give up every draft pick for a solid QB. Ricky didn’t work for the Saints, but what have we got to lose? Mediocrity?

  • February 20, 2012  - el cid says:

Josh not seeing it. Return man? we have Arenas and other guy, that is enough for Pioli. Sufficient talent….Flowers and ……(who?). As for QB, I garantee we will have one more before training camp, but Cassel is the guy for Pioli (where have you been?).

Not a great signing but insurance in case Carr walks. Some will tell you he is the same as Carr, do not believe it, a definite step down in on the field ability. AND definitely cheaper, we know how the Chiefs like that. Remember how Hunt just said he has 20 mil extra for signings, he is a noble man of his word, isn’t he?

The Hunt/Pioli money machine is hard at it. Working their magic. I bet these guys lay awake at night just thinking of ways to save money. They probably wear the same pair of socks all week long.

Wonder if we would keep Carr simply because so many people are going spread and would require teams to have more quality cb’s

  • February 20, 2012  - txchief says:

I see Josh’s point on the return man. Arenas has never taken it to the house on a kick or punt return. However, I don’t think there is any player in this draft that is worth repeating Ditka’s mistake with Ricky Williams.

  • February 20, 2012  - Josh says:

El Cid – You’re arguing my points for me.

1)When have Dex (other guy) and Arenas scored TDs, aside from opening game against SD in 2010?

    2)Um, Flowers and Carr.

3)Goodness, I KNOW Pioli has a soft-on for Cassel. Why do you think I’m commenting?

I’m a Carr fan, and this is just a position grab to make Carr sign long term for less than $5M.

4)No, neither you nor I believe little Clarky is a man of his word. He needs to fire the wet-nurse and get to work.

Perhaps I should buy enough bullets for both of us, and we can Rochambeau for the honors. I really hope you think we need some O-Line, and you’re just nitpicking my off-season comment. Otherwise, do us all a favor, and cheer for Dallas.

  • February 20, 2012  - cychief24 says:

If we resign Carr then this is great! If not then this goes against what Clark said about having cap room to sign our own players.
I just hope the O-line is addressed in both free agency and the draft. Plus NG.

Doubt we would resign Carr this aint Philly and we already have Arenas and Jalil Brown on team. Crennel already mention he wanted get Brown on field more often. Signing of Routt means we’re not going resign Carr. Neither guy or good playing nickel. What this means is more than likely going use franchise tag on Bowe if we can’t work out long term contract. Its like Matt Williamson from ESPN said on whb 810 radio we want go into free agency with #2 corner and #1 receiver locked up so focus can now go on running back, tight end, QB and nose tackle. Wouldn’t want us go after linemen in free agency outside Carl Nicks but more than likely he’s going back to New Orleans. Draft going to be place we fix oline the depth oline in this year’s draft is ridiculous. We can build that HOF line with this year’s upcoming draft alot very talented players coming out. Free agency doesn’t offer much especially when Demetrius Bell and Jared Gaither are the top off tackles in free agency I’ll pass on both guys.

Maybe Bob could rename his site or perhaps Those names would probably suit many of the posters here.

I’m beginning to wonder if some posting on Bob’s website are really Raiders or Donkeys fans trying to kill any buzz Chiefs fans might have about the team. Anyway, when y’all are feeling sorry for yourselves and rubbing one out during the games next season, I’ll be in the stands cheering for the Chiefs!

Funny how people who have nothing to say of any worth just attack others as raider fan or dallas fan. You put out the crap and that is your best….pretty weak.

  • February 21, 2012  - Lan Evo says:

Pro Football Focus ranked Routt 19th and Carr at 21st overall at CB. They have roughly the same skill set, so if Carr was asking for a lot more money, this makes sense.

Also I don’t think Arenas has ever proved himself to be of much value. I just see him being a stop gap type guy filling the return role until we get someone better. He gets abused in the slot… That said I don’t think a return guy is the biggest priority.

Finally, I love how the delusional people here call anyone critical or rational about the Chiefs as being a “hater” or a lesser fan. Most of the things people are mad at Bob for are merely his subjective views. His view shouldn’t have to be exactly like your view.
