Pre-Game From Arrowhead/Chargers vs. Chiefs

From Arrowhead Stadium

8:50 p.m. CDT — Couple items from pre-game warmups: OLB Mike Vrabel was working with the goal line offense as a tight end. At one point, RG Ryan Lilja was working at RT. The Chiefs have only two tackles active tonight, starterss Branden Albert and Barry Richardson. The Chiefs did not show their hand on who their emergency quarterback may be for this game, since they have only Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle dressed.

8:20 p.m. CDT — Kicking towards the west goal posts, Ryan Succop easily nailed a 54-yard FG.

8:17 p.m. CDT — Another number change for the Chiefs, as S Kendrick Lewis is now wearing No. 23 rather than No. 49 that he wore in the pre-season.

8:00 p.m. CDT — Inactives for the Chiefs tonight are OLB Cameron Sheffield, OT Ryan O’Callaghan, DT Anthony Toribio, CB Jackie Bates, WR Jeremy Horne, LB Justin Cole, FB Mike Cox and DE Alex Magee.

8:00 p.m. CDT — Inactives for the Chargers tonight are LB Shawne Merriman, SS Darrell Stuckey, CB Dante Hughes, LB Brandon Lang, DT Cam Thoams, OT Adam Terry and DE Vaughn Martin. J.T. O’Sullivan is the inactive third quarterback.

7:55 p.m. CDT — Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson and Chargers LB Shawne Merriman having a nice chat at the 15-yard line. Merriman is expected to be inactive for tonight’s game.

7:40 p.m. CDT — Todd Haley and Brian Waters having a conversation at the 25-yard line. Wonder if it’s about the show of unity that many teams have done this opening weekend involving the NFL Players Association. After the national anthem, players from both teams have been walking about 10 yards onto the field and holding up their index fingers signaling No. 1, as in one together. Waters would not talk about whether the Chiefs would follow other teams tonight, but given the national TV audience, it’s a good bet they will.

7:34 p.m. CDT — Chiefs G Brian Waters at the 15-yard line with T Branden Albert chatting with Chargers DL and former teammate Alfonso Boone.

7:20 p.m. CDT — On the field late for the pre-pre-game throwing session are QB Matt Cassel and TE Leonard Pope.

7:17 p.m. CDT — The receivers catching passes are Dwayne Bowe, Chris Chambers, Terrance Copper, Dexter McCluster, Tony Moeaki, Jake O’Connell and Mike Vrabel.

7:13 p.m. CDT — Chiefs receivers and quarterbacks are on the field going through their normal pre-pre-game throwing routine. QB Brodie Croyle and Tyler Palko are throwing – no Matt Cassel yet — and among those catching passes are WR Dexter McCluster and OLB Mike Vrabel.

7:10 p.m. CDT — Talking at the 40-yard line are a pair of Alabama-bred quarterbacks: Brodie Croyle of the Chiefs and Philip Rivers of the Chargers.

7:00 p.m. CDT — There is a group of Chiefs players out running with strength coach Mike Clark and it could be – I repeat could be – part of the inactives. Among those players is CB Jackie Bates, LB Justin Cole, FB Mike Cox, WR Jeremy Horne and DT Anthony Toribio.

6:30 p.m. CDT — Familiar faces for Chiefs fans with the Chargers tonight include DE Alfonso Boone and TE Kris Wilson on the roster. On the coaching staff of Norv Turner are the previously mentioned Jeff Hurd, WR coach Charlie Joiner, who spent seven years with the Chiefs (2001-07), assistant DB coach Cris Dishman, who played for the Chiefs in 1999.

6:22 p.m. CDT — Weather has delayed the start of the first game of tonight’s double-header in the Meadowlands between the Jets and Ravens. That delay will not effect the start of the Chargers-Chiefs game, which is still set for a 9:15 p.m. kickoff.

6:19 p.m. CDT — Strength coaches Mike Clark (Chiefs) and Jeff Hurd (Chargers) are out early chatting at the 15-yard line. Hurd used to be the strength and conditioning coach for the Chiefs, holding that position for nine seasons. He landed in San Diego when Marty Schottenheimer went there to be head coach.

6:17 p.m. CDT — A reminder to fans watching the game that rookie CB Javier Arenas has changed his number. He’s no longer wearing No. 30. He’s now wearing No. 21. Plus, rookie WR Jeremy Horne is wearing No. 11 after wearing No. 8 during the pre-season. All other numerical assignments remain the same.

6:06 p.m. CDT — As always, the first Chiefs player on the field is C Rudy Niswanger. He’s out with one of the equipment guys practicing his shotgun snaps. Remember it was in San Diego last year when Niswanger had a couple of awful snaps in the shotgun against the Chargers.

6:04 p.m. CDT – From high on top the stadium from our press box perch we can tell you that traffic on I-70 east bound and I-435 southbound is moving well with no delay of any kind. Traffic for the Royals game cleared out pretty quickly.

6:03 p.m. CDT – Very hot and muggy weather here about three hours before kickoff. Weather forecast says there’s a chance for showers and thunderstorms this evening in the Kansas City area. They are expected after midnight. Current temperature is 87 degrees and there’s a pretty good wind blowing out of the southeast.

6:02 p.m. CDT – National Anthem singer Billy Ray Cyrus is on the field, throwing and catching a football. Let’s just say he looks like he has pretty good hands. But as for throwing the ball, Miley might have a stronger arm.

6:00 p.m. CDT – The officiating crew working the game is led by Pete Morelli and includes head linesman George Hayward of St. Joseph. Hayward was among the officials who visited the Chiefs during camp at Northwest Missouri State. Hayward is a Northwest graduate.
