Pre-Game Coverage – Broncos vs. Chiefs

From Arrowhead Stadium

11:30 a.m. CST – The Chiefs are leaving the field after completing their warm-up session, while the Broncos are just wrapping up their work. We’ll be back after the game with complete coverage, so return often to catch up on our look at the Chiefs-Broncos.

11:25 a.m. CST – Wind will definitely be a factor in today’s game. Coaches standing on the field are having their legs on their pants ripple in the breeze, and that’s at field level. The National Weather Service calls for wind gusts of near 30 miles per hour during the game, with a constant blow between 8 and 18 mph.

11:20 a.m. CST – Denver head coach John Fox is 2-0 against the Chiefs during his previous coaching stop in Carolina, winning in 2004 and 2008. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley is 2-2 against the Broncos, winning in Denver in the 2009 season and then at Arrowhead last year.

11:15 a.m. CST – Visiting near the 50-yard line are the punting Colquitt Brothers – Dustin with the Chiefs and Britton with the Broncos. Ironic twist last week – the brothers each had a botched play that left them vulnerable to getting smashed. Dustin got a field goal snap he wasn’t expected (pooch punt was expected) and tried to run. Britton got a bad snap and couldn’t get a punt off, so he threw an underhanded pass that fell incomplete. Both were ugly plays.

11:10 a.m. CST – making his first appearance on the field in Kansas City as a team executive, John Elway is out and about on the Broncos sideline. There are very few players in history that have broken as many red and gold hearts as Elway did during his playing career with the Broncos.

11:05 a.m. CST – Weather report today calls for sunny skies, with no chance of rain and temperatures in the high 60s. There’s a wind coming out of the west-southwest running from 8 to 18 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 28 mph. As is typical on a windy day at Arrowhead, the ribbons on the top of the uprights are blowing in different directions. On the east side they are blowing east, and on the west side they are blowing to the west.

11 a.m. CST — Kicking towards the west goal posts, K Ryan Succop was good from 51 yards, but short and wide right from 53 yards.

10:55 a.m. CST – Referee Ron Winter’s crew is working this game. Winter and his crew have a history of not being afraid to throw the yellow hanky. Chiefs and Broncos have both played in eight games each that averaged 13 penalties walked off per game

10:50 a.m. CST – Bad news for the Broncos is losing LB Wesley Woodyard, who is one of their top special teams performers. He’s the only Denver player that will not play because of injury.

10:45 a.m. CST – Good news for the Chiefs is that SS Jon McGraw and CB Javier Arenas are both active for today’s game. With McGraw, that’s good news particularly for defensing the Denver running game. Losing ILB Demorrio Williams hurts when it comes to special teams coverage.

10:40 a.m. CST – Inactive players for the Broncos today are S Rafael Bush, CB Cassius Vaughn, FB Quinn Johnson, LB Wesley Woodyard, G Manny Ramirez, OT Tony Hills and DE Derrick Harvey.

10:35 a.m. CST – Inactive players for the Chiefs today are QB Ricky Stanzi, ILB Demorrio Williams, OT Steve Maneri, WR Jerheme Urban, TE Anthony Becht, DE Brandon Bair and DT Jerrell Powe.

10:25 a.m. CST – As the Broncos wrap up their throwing session it is surprising that Tim Tebow has made probably 90 percent of the throws over the last 20 minutes. Brady Quinn has the other 10 percent and Kyle Orton hasn’t been throwing at all.

10:20 a.m. CST – Worth noting from the Chiefs throwing session: last week, FB Le’Ron McClain was part of the group when they moved to the scoring zone and ran his routes out of the backfield. On this Sunday, the Chiefs wrapped up their throwing with no sign of McClain or any other running back for that matter.

10:15 a.m. CST – In the pre-pre-game throwing session it looks like WR Jonathan Baldwin has dropped as many passes as he has caught. When they moved into the scoring zone, he caught all the passes thrown his way in the end zone.

10:10 a.m. CST – The Chiefs QBs and receivers are out for their normal pre-pre-game throwing session with all the normal bodies present and catching passes. That’s the WRs and TE Jake O’Connell catching balls from all three passers.

10:05 a.m. CST – Out early for a throwing session is Denver QB Tim Tebow, working on some routes to the right, throwing over and over again as a ball boy shovels him footballs. QB coach Adam Case is working with him, making fine point corrections to his form.

10:03 a.m. CST – As always, OLB Tamba Hali is out early for his pre-pre-game work with Master Joe Kim, the taekwondo expert. Hali works for a good 15 to 20 minutes on hand fighting, a key part of his game when it comes to rushing the passer. In 10 previous games against Denver, Hali has 8.5 sacks.

10 a.m. CST – Good morning from the Truman Sports Complex for the 10th Sunday of the 2011 season will get underway in two hours as the Chiefs host the Broncos. It’s a fantastic morning with very moderate temperatures, almost no wind and sunny skies. We’ll update you with a weather forecast a bit closer to kickoff, but weather should not be a factor today.
