Gotta give the nod to Pioli. He’s quickly moving this franchise 180 degrees from where Peterson/Edwards left it. Thank God.

Pioli is the youngest and only one of three NFL executives to win the Sporting News’ George Young NFL Executive of the Year Award in consecutive years, a feat he accomplished after winning the award for the second straight year following the 2004 season.

On June 24, 2009, ESPN.com announced its All-Decade Moments naming Scott Pioli Personnel Man of the Decade. “No one in the league does a better job of scouting their own team, and [at the Patriots] Pioli was orchestrating all of that.”

"That was especially visible in a blitz period, where Cassel was six of seven throwing the ball. The only incompletion was a drop by TE Sean Ryan down the middle.

The QB was quick and decisive with his throws..."

It looks like Pioli has brought his winning ways to KC.

Scott Pioli: Youngest, and one of only 3 persons to win the "George Young NFL Executive of the Year Award" two years running.

Scott Pioli: ESPN's winner of the "Personnel Man of the Decade" award.

Another great post Rin Tin Tin. Keep it up! Pioli and Haley appear lost with all these player moves. It smacks of utter desperation and it will likely also equal more losses.

Thank you, Clark Hunt, for the new front office and coachng staff. Finally, KC can return to its winning ways. This team will win a playoff game next year! And that is amazing considering how bad the franchise was when the new sheriff and his deputies came to town. Woo-Hoo...GO CHIEFS!

Then of course, a sampling some other Chiefs fan reaction to  s laying of an egg on the Jim Rome Show:

//www.kcconfidential.com/?p=7588

"Painful interview. About as believable as “I did not have s*xual relations, with that woman, Miss Lewinsky”. He may be a great coach, but he’s a terrible liar/bull*hitter."

"geeeezzz, this guy is a goofball"

"appears we have mucho misery in front of us. Idiot coaches whom talk all his canned BS are destined to fail."

"Football is like life and poker. You are dealt cards, and you play them accordingly. This idiot might do well if he was dealt a royal flush, preflop, but to talk his BS, about “his system” and ACTUNG ,EVERYBODY BETTER FALL IN LINE AND DO IT MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY, ais not going to work with this crew."

"seems this idiot does not understand he is dealing with grown men who are millionaires. THIS IS NOT HIGH SCHOOL. His gestapo attitude and tactics do not work on grown, wealthy men."

SWEET...the Rin influence is spreading far & wide!

If they're going to move D'Mac back to LT for depth (not a bad move), they should try Taylor at RG or Center.

I still think Thigpen is going to be a very good quarterback in the NFL. I just think right now Cassel is better, and will be the better quarterback down the line. If Thigpen is traded, it should be for a conditional pick-1 to 4, based on playing time. I think he would end up starting there.

Having said that, I don't think they should trade Thigpen. This is a team that has starved for quality QB's. We now have 3 quality young guns. Why be so eager to part with one? And why not see what Thigpen can wildcat type of plays?

Gettting a good draft pick or player back for Thigpen wouldn't be horrilbe, and I know KC needs picks and players...still want to keep him.

gorillafan-
Thanks for sharing the Yahoo article, that was awesome! It was great to read an unbiased view of the Edwards debacle and the new direction under a great General Manager and a potentially great Head Coach.

I suggest that everyone that reads this site check out the linked article above from gorillafan. It really gives great insight on where our beloved Chiefs were and where we are going.
Go Chiefs!

It's nice to see a writer who's not friends with Herm and is willing to talk about some of his negatives without hesitation.

I believe it's a little inaccurate to infer that the "core" is missing b/c of Vermeil. Those "4-5" year vet drafts (2004/05) produced Jared Allen, D. Johnson, and Colquitt. It's not Vermeils fault they traded away Allen. While Vermeil's drafts weren't good, they were no worse than those right before/after he arrived/left.

Who cares about the friggin' Vikings?

There's no QB controversy here...because one of our QB's is clearly the starter. Cassel. Because he gives us the best chance of winning. End of story.

This "conspiracy theory" some of you guys come up with? LMAO!

Do you guys see the all snaps in practice? Are you in the classroom with them? In the weight room? Do you watch them work? See their demeanor? Do you KNOW them? Spoken to them? Around them every day?

I believe I'll trust the guys that ARE to make the decisions on who to start. If you don't want to...then that's your business.

I like Thigpen. He's just not a starting caliber QB in this league. Will he ever be? Who knows? But right now, good guy or not...he isn't.

And since a Head Coach's job depends on winning games...and a GM's job depends on winning games...this insane idea that the better player(s) will not play for some (insert "conspiracy theory" here) reason? Completely and totally absurd. Get serious.

How much i$ enough?

"The disjointed elitism was even apparent in the structure of the parking lot, where players were allowed to buy the best spots for their cars"

- helping Jr. buy more $occer teams by the parking $pace?

"Thanks to dead drafts at the end of the Dick Vermeil era"

- exactly so... no fault of yours Herm - you STILL The Man!

(PS) Rin reconnoiters: so how's all that weight loss adding up  ? 0-2... right... 'check'

Great taste less filling? No wait- no wins is no news news? Or maybe...

Since everyone loves a soap opera (the Chiefs have their own QB same), of interest is this from www.rotoworld.com

"Favre does not appear to have much support in locker room" - Wed, 26 Aug 2009

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre appears to have little support from teammates at this point, according to a league source.

Favre has created a division within the locker room. Some players believe QB Tarvaris Jackson gives the team the best chance to win while others believe QB Sage Rosenfels gives them the best chance to win, according to sources.

KC Mutt should be so lucky... yes?

About the Thigpen trade rumors. if we got him off waivers from Minnesota why not try and trade him back for some OL or a draft pick. I also believ that if Matt Cassel is not the starter and somebody was actually performing better in practice they would be starting the next preseason game. Anyway i'm excited for this team and really debating paying the $300 for NFL Ticket from Direct. I'd be Estatic with 6-7 wins, i could go to work and be happy instead loss after loss after loss.

gorillafan,
That was an awesome article. I think he nailed it. We're finally on the right track with the team. Unfortunately, like he pointed out, we don't have those 4th and 5th year core players to lean on right now. I think the process can be sped up slightly the way Scott and Todd are churning the roster though.

I don't know if anybody heard Peter King on Sirius this A.M. He said the players loved Herm last year. He also said the Chiefs were fat and out of shape and that Herm was not the person to do anything about it. He said that when he visited training camp this year the practices were serious and intense, even in the heat. He finished by stating the Chiefs needed this approach and that they are not the Peterson/Edwards Chiefs of old. It will take time but I look forward to the day (and it will come) when Chiefs fans crowd the stadium and the electric atmosphere that makes Arrowhead a special place returns and we all end the day satisfied with sore throats and the ache of anticipation for next weeks opponent.

7 wins would represent a huge turn around. Then 10 in 2010. That is assuming Pioli/Haley spend some time fixing the offense like this years efforts on defense.

Thigpen lovers say he just needs to be taught. That is not the function of a NFL team. Maybe he can be but it is not natural to him (getting under center). Several NFL QBs has been successful running and throwing like Thigpen but the teams they are on have patterned their offense to suit that. The Chiefs are setting their offense to be a dropback style. Get over it.

I'm liking the approach of Pioli/Haley. I am. Also, if anyone is keeping up with the updates and seeing what is unfolding during this pre-season, as I have to KNOW most of you ARE, then we have to come to grips with certain realities for this team in 2009:

1) It's a team/roster/coaching staff/GM finding out about itself, what it can do and become. When compared to projected 2009 playoff teams, the team does not match up just now.

2) The team's W-L 2009 outcomes, realistically have to be tempered with all this 'newness' but there will be expectations of an instant turnaround among some, similar to the 2008 Falcons and Dolphins. I'm not one of those. I think a 6-7 win season would be a significant step forward.

All that said, I do believe the Chiefs are finally on the right track in 2009 thanks to the dogged determination, changing of culture and moves made thus far by Pioli/Haley.

I also believe we won't see the results of those efforts in terms of playoff potential until 2010 at the earliest, 2011 being the most likely return of the Chief's glory days.

The Chiefs have no reason to "want" to put Thiggy behind Croyle, especially if they're trying to showcase him for a trade. Fact is, Thigpen hasn't clearly beat out Croyle, much less Cassel. If Thigpen was clearly outplaying Cassel in practice and in games (he was injured for the last one), then you might have an argument. But that is not the case at all. There's still a couple weeks for that picture to change some, but those of you screaming conspiracy are just biased to Thigpen. I like Thigpen, but I don't see/hear any evidence that he should start over Cassel.

Thigpen's always reminded me of an even-more unpolished Rich Gannon. I agree with you, Alex that he's definitely going to have a better career than Croyle if he's given the chance. I would like to see him stay on as the #2 guy here in KC until he can learn to play under center like you suggested.

I don't think you're being entirely fair to Haley though, since Thigs has come back from the rib injury in the Texans game, he's been playing with the 2nd teamers. Haley even said he thinks Thigs has the ability to make plays and that he just wants to see him improve on his accuracy...doesn't sound like someone who's already made up his mind and is making #4 the odd man out.

If u open your eyes Scott and see whats going on then it would all make sense 2 u.For 1 they are giving Brodie more opportunites than Thiggy only b/c he has a better chance of winning a starting job at Pizza Hut than Qb for the chiefs. The Only guy that has a real serious chance at pushing Cassell is being shop around the league...we are so quick 2 call players a failure or bust when sometimes u have 2 look at these piss poor coaches. We need 2 stop pointing fingers at the students and more towards the teachers and that brings me back 2 my point, Haley clearly isnt capable of teaching or is just a puppet being orchestrated by Pioli. B/c i believe if u have patience 2 teach Thiggy 2 play under center he can become a dynamic Qb in this league but of course thats just my opinion!

Scott,

Gasp! You mean speculation doesn't translate into facts? No wonder Brodie didn't work out the first two times they tried to start him!

I'm really looking forward to seeing Cassel play a bunch this weekend and seeing if he can establish some good rhythm.

Surely it isn't the fact that Thigpen isn't accurate and is only useful in the shotgun when teams are in a prevent defense. I'd say he got his chance to start in the league when he started over half the games last year (just like Cassel did). The new management had a lot of tape to look at before they determined Cassel is better. Furthermore, Thigpen was still playing behind Croyle in the first 2 pre-season games. If it's truly money driven, why don't they dump Croyle? I'm sure he makes more than Thiggy. Maybe, just maybe, the entire football world has this one right and the few Thiggy supporters don't. I'm growing tired of weak arguments and conspiracy theories...but I have a feeling they'll keep coming.

Rin you are an absolute idiot and i can't stress that more, I'll let you say whatever you want because you will anyways, but I'm pretty sure you are just a loser who probably couldn't carry an intelligent football conversation if your life depended on it, loser

Thigpen has done nothing to distinguish himself as "the" guy. Period.

And Cassel has not started one single regular season game as a Chief. It's simply amazing how some of you can look into your crystal ball and see the future. Me? I'll just do it the old-fashioned way...and wait to see how the man plays the game week in and week out before I pass judgement.

Just as I suspected, then would never give Thiggy a shot thats why they stuck him with the third team and prayed that he would fail so there would be no qb controversy. But just as he did last year Thiggy proved he can get it done and move the ball with a bunch of rejects and now Pioli's only option is 2 trade him so we can continue 2 force feed ourselves with this 63 million dollar 1yr proven qb, what a travesty! Good luck Thiggy with your new team hope every thing works out and u "really" get a chance 2 start in this league! Open Competition Lmao Haley is becoming more funnier by the min. go Chiefs in 2009 and Beyond!!!!!!!!!

Im sick of reading how cassel is the 63 million dollar man blah blah, if he has a good year, the guy wouldve commanded 90, on top of the 14 we would have already paid him....

lets see...104

currently 63

wow, I wonder which looks better, of course he could fail, but im a fan, I believe in positive thinking and in judging what we see...what we see, is a real deal top 10 QB.

I agree that KC may be lucky to win 6 this year with this schedule...but if they do win 6, thats two years of herm to get that many wins

Man I love the fact that the offensive line looked like crap last week, especially the right side and now look, 2 new guys on the right side. What a difference in concept from last year to this year. Last year the o-line was bad and the idea was to let them play together and build "cohesion" and they will get better as a "unit". BS! If the talent isnt adequate to field a competitive o-line do something about it, im not saying we brought in two extremely talented linemen but at least changes are being made where needed. Its possible these two new guys will be the same/worse but the point is we're not sitting back with our thumbs up our !@# waiting for things to get better on their own.

Interesting how the last 2 seasons, the chiefs did not show ANY improvement in the win catagory...which is what matters.

Question, does anyone know if Herm drafted a pro bowler?

At least an alternate right?

Did he at least SIGN a guy who turned pro bowl under him in KC?

oh...no?...wow.

steve says:
" The only thing that will save our team is the fact that the a.f.c. west is San Diego and nothing else. "

Not sure, there. I have a feeling the Raiders might be better this year than some may think. Especially when (or if, I guess) Garcia takes over the team at QB...I think they'll win some games.

I also wonder how Rivers will play now that he's got the "big money". Those big contracts sometimes tend to rob a player of their motivation.

"...OT Damion McIntosh was moved to the left side of the line from the right tackle spot he’s held for the entire pre-season."

Signs of the end. Now...how long does B-Rinch hold down that #1 spot?

Actually Rin those you listed were camp fodder and did not have actual starts

check the Miami OL last season, apart from the Ravens playoff game, Alleman did a fantstic job. Its an upgrade over the junk Herm brought in, see Mcintosh, and an entire list of players that helped a 2 win season.

Oh its the fake rin, didnt see the post about all rin posting being fake.

Fact is the team handed to Haley stunk. it stunk of a lack of discipline and a lack of coaching. as well as quite a few holes after years of rebuilding.

.Interesting, Cassel looking really good, hit charles for what couldve been 50 yards or 90 on a swing pass.

.Succop still kicking well. Best performance I have seen from a Kc kicker in camp in a decade

.Love the new guys on the Ol hopefully one can start, I like that Eric G is running first team center and Tank is with first team D

Also, the top two recievers, darling/bowe are those that were called out by Haley--looks like coach is doing it right.

Mid season on, measure improvement not wins. The only thing that will save our team is the fact that the a.f.c. west is San Diego and nothing else. Rebuilding, Detroit has been doing it forever, maybe we can do it in two or three years.

I'd say they are getting better with time...and they'll continue to improve. New guys, new team (in many cases), new coaches, new QB's. It takes some time to play together as a team...and get into rhythm or sync or whatever you want to call it. There's still 2 1/2 weeks to the first game. No need to panic. Yet.

Are the WRs getting better or has Haley's expectations lowered? This group worries me (except for Bowe).
