Practice Report/Update – 12/30

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs enjoyed sunny skies and a chilly wind from the north as they went through their final practice of the 2011 season.

It was a pretty vocal bunch as they ran through their pre-practice stretching routine; it was a little bit like the last recess of the school year. But the coaching staff quickly got them back on track and worked on getting better prepared for Sunday’s finale against the Broncos in Denver.

RB Jackie Battle will not play in Denver because of the foot injury he suffered last Sunday against Oakland. He’s officially listed as out. That will put more bread on the table of veteran RB Thomas Jones, since he and Dexter McCluster are the only running backs left on the roster, along with FB Le’Ron McClain.

Offensive coordinator Bill Muir thinks Jones relishes the chance to close out his 12th NFL season with a heavy workload against Denver.

“My sense is he’s looking at it and saying, ‘I don’t know how many more times I’m going to get to carry the ball; I’m going to make the most out of it’,” said Muir.

Jones now sits at 10,549 rushing yards over his 12-year career. He needs 59 more yards to surpass RB Jamal Lewis (10,607) for 21st place on the NFL’s all-time rushing list.

SS Jon McGraw (ankle) did not participate in practice again on Friday and he’s listed as doubtful for playing on Sunday. WR Jeremy Horne who missed a day of practice this past week because of illness is listed as probable. It will be interesting to watch in the next 48 hours if the Chiefs make a couple of roster spots available by sending Battle and McGraw to the injured-reserve list and bringing up a couple of players from the practice squad.

For the Broncos there were five players listed on their injury report:

  • Doubtful – S Brian Dawkins (neck).
  • Probable – S David Bruton (Achilles), CB Chris Harris (neck), S Quinton Carter (hip) and LB Von Miller (thumb).

With McCluster sharing the load with Jones, wow, we better have a huge day hitting receivers. I guess we hope for the best but could be ugly.

ElCid used that darn word “ugly”. I can easily agree with him. Unless Orton comes out with a MISSION to prove something to the Broncos. The problem is the Broncos have alot on the line. Iam not so sure about the Chiefs. Looking forward to picking #11 and hoping for #10. Would love to see a Panthers victory.

Mainly I’m just happy to get this year over, heal the injuries, and get ready for next year. But, to tell the truth, I’m pretty excited about the Denver game. The more both sides try to downplay it, the Orton vs Tebow aspect looks more entertaining. Love to see an upset.
