NFL Training Camp Locations & Dates

It will begin on Wednesday, July 17th when the rookies for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers show up at the team’s facility to be the first of the NFL’s 32 teams in training camp mode. Ten days later, the veterans for the Bills and Colts will check in to be the last teams to have their full roster in camp.

The Chiefs will start between those days – July 22th for the rookies, quarterbacks and returning injured players and then July 25th for the veterans. Andy Reid and his team will be one of 11 teams that will go away from training camp, leaving their facility and hitting the road. The 60-mile drive from the team’s facility at the Truman Sports Complex to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph ranks as one of the fewest camp trips among the teams that still go camping.

The NFL’s other 21 teams practice at their in-season facilities, the highest number in what has been a trend towards staying home for camp in recent seasons. This year, the Cardinals, Eagles and Giants have decided to stay at their facilities. The Redskins went the other way, leaving their in the Virginia suburbs for a brand new facility built for them in Richmond.

The rules are fairly simple in the NFL, as defined by the labor agreement between the owners and players. It reads:

“No veteran player other than quarterbacks and injured players, will be required to report to a Club’s official preseason training camp earlier than fifteen days (including one day for physical examinations, meetings, classroom instruction, running, and conditioning) prior to his Club’s first scheduled preseason game or July 15, whichever is later. The July 15 date shall not apply to Clubs participating in the Canton Hall of Fame Game or any American Bowl game scheduled around the Canton Hall of Fame Game date. For purposes of this Section, an “injured player” shall not include a player who fully participates in all Phase Three activities (OTAs) and the Mandatory Veteran Minicamp during the club’s offseason workout program …”

The teams that travel vary from short drives of an hour, to the Cowboys trip to California. Dallas is the only team that travels out of its area of influence to hold camp. It harkens back to the days when Tex Schramm and Tom Landry took the Cowboys to Thousand Oaks every year. It’s just down the road from Oxnard.

Here are the distances the traveling teams will cover to reach their camp:
