NFL First-Quarter Almanac – Offense

Over the next few days, we’ll break down the action over the NFL for the first quarter of the season, even though the Chiefs and three other teams have not yet reached their fourth game.

RUSHING

  • Most yards – 537 yards, Texans RB Arian Foster (right). That’s a pace to reach 2,148 yards on the season.
  • Most carries – 94, Titans RB Chris Johnson. That’s a pace for 376 carries by the end of the year.
  • Best average per carry – (at least 40 carries) 7.0, Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles.
  • Longest run – 80 yards, Vikings RB Adrian Peterson and Cardinals RB Tim Hightower.
  • Most rushing TDs – 4, by six RBS – Arian Foster of Texans, Rashard Mendenhall of Steelers, Chris Johnson of Titans, Peyton Hillis of Browns, LeSean McCoy of Eagles and Jahvid Best of Lions.
  • Best rushing performance – 231 yards, Texans RB Arian Foster vs. Colts on September 12.
  • 100-yard performances – 24, by 16 running backs and one quarterback. Foster has three 100+ games.
  • Best rushing duo – 564 yards, Jets LaDainian Tomlinson and Shon Greene.  
  • Best rushing quarterback – 187 yards, Eagles QB Michael Vick.
  • Best rushing rookie – 174 yards, Lions RB Jahvid Best.
  • Record of teams with RB at 100 yards or more – 15-9.
  • Best rushing team – 172 yards per game, by Texans.
  • Worst rushing team – 55 yards per game, Broncos.
  • Most carries by team – 149, by Falcons.
  • Team that runs the least – 69, by Cowboys.
  • Best average per carry/team – 5.5 yards per carry, Texans and Eagles.
  • Most rushing touchdowns – 5, Texans, Titans and Eagles.

PASSING

  • Most passing yards – 1,419 yards, Broncos QB Kyle Orton.
  • Best completion percentage – 69.8 percent, Colts QB Peyton Manning.
  • Best average per attempt – 9.42 yards, Chargers QB Philip Rivers.
  • Most TD passes – 11, Peyton Manning.
  • Fewest interceptions – 0, Jets QB Matt Sanchez and Eagles QB Mike Vick.
  • Best passer rating – 112.2, Peyton Manning.
  • QBs with passer rating over 100 – 7, Manning-Tom Brady-Vick-Sanchez-Rivers-Drew Brees-Jay Cutler.
  • Fewest TD passes – 2, Vikings QB Brett Favre.
  • Most interceptions – 7, Lions QB Shaun Hill and 49ers QB Alex Smith.
  • Most passing yards in a single game – 497 yards, Texans QB Matt Schaub vs. Washington on September 19.
  • 400-yard passing games – 5, topped by Schaub’s 497-yard performance.

  • Most catches – 33, Wayne. That’s a pace for 132 catches by the end of the year.
  • Best average per catch – (at least 10 catches) 21.5 yards, Bears WR Johnny Knox.
  • Longest pass play – 89 yards, Bears RB Matt Forte.
  • Most receiving TDs – 6, by Chargers TE Antonio Gates.
  • Best receiving performance – 222 yards, Bengals WR Terrell Owens vs. Cleveland on October 3.
  • 100-yard performances – 46, by 37 different receivers.
  • Record of teams with receiver with 100 yards or more – 20-26.
  • Best receiving duo – 854 yards, Colts WRs Reggie Wayne and Austin Collie.
  • Best receiving running back – 29 catches for 263 yards, 49ers RB Frank Gore.
  • Best receiving tight end – 24 catches for 386 yards, Chargers TE Antonio Gates.
  • Best rookie receiver – 18 catches for 240 yards, Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez.
