Monday Morning Cup O’Chiefs
From River Falls, Wisconsin
These are the dogs days of training camp.
For the Chiefs here in the northwoods, the light at the end of the tunnel is now visible and they are pretty sure it’s not a train coming at them. Even with Herm Edwards taking some of the load off by slicing a few practices, the coaches and players have had enough of UW-River Falls.
The same thing is happening in camps around the league. The time for team bonding is necessary. But three weeks is about the maximum these days for keeping guys away from their home digs. Anything more than that and things start to turn negative.
A few years ago under Marty Schottenheimer, the Chiefs spent almost five weeks in River Falls. Never was a group more happy to see Kansas City.
More later this week on whether the Chiefs will return here to the land of beer and cheese.
COUNTDOWN
The Chiefs are five days away from breaking camp here at UW-River Falls and returning to Kansas City for the rest of the pre-season. It’s 15 days from the NFL’s first mandatory cutdown of the roster. Teams must go from 80 to 75 on August 26. It’s 19 days from the NFL roster cutdown to the regular-season limit of 53 players.
It’s 27 days away from their regular-season opener against the Patriots in Foxboro and they are 34 days away from their home opener against the Raiders.
CHIEFS HISTORY
On August 11, 1962 the Dallas Texans lost a pre-season game to the Chargers at Balboa Stadium in San Diego 17-0. It was the first time in franchise history that the Texans were shutout. The closest they got to the Chargers end zone was the San Diego 9-yard line, but a Jack Spikes FG was wide from 20 yards. QB Jack Kemp picked apart the Dallas defense, hitting 12 o f 17 passes for 194 yards in the first half. WR Lance Alworth caught five passes for 93 yards, including a 41-yard bomb.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
At least once a month an NFL player gets hurt doing something stupid. August’s candidate is Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards. Check this out.
The infamous Dr. Z visited the Jets camp with Brett Favre around, and it reminded him of the days when Joe Willie Namath was throwing the pig with the Jets in the AFL.
AROUND THE AFC WEST
Denver’s offensive line got off to a bad start in their pre-season opening loss to Houston, including former Chiefs center Casey Wiegmann and their No. 1 pick, LT Ryan Clady.
New NFL rules on tailgating did not get a thumb’s up from fans of the San Diego Chargers.
The Raiders are still struggling to get anything out of their passing game.

I think I read somewhere that all teams were doing their own things regaurding tailgating policies? Anyone have any idea what the word is coming out of KC?
Bob,
I have heard from Denver fans that Denver management has an eye on our very own Maurice Price and if KC doesnt add him to the roster they are going to snag him up because of thier need at WR. Have you heard anymore on this? I would hate to see Price go, especially to the hated Broncos!
