Kickoff Luncheon Words from Herm
The annual Chiefs Kickoff Luncheon was held Tuesday afternoon at the Hyatt Regency in Crown Center.
There were many words spoken. Bill Grigsby suggested the Chiefs were on a three-year plan to the Super Bowl. With a smile on his face, Carl Peterson mentioned that now famous Chiefs Urban Myth that he came to town in 1989 and set up a five-year plan.
The final words of note belonged to head coach Herm Edwards and they deserve to be heard again:
“There’s a lot been said about three year plans, five year plans, for me, it’s this year.
“Here’s how it works. It’s real simple. You surround yourself with people that you trust, surround yourself with good players that have one idea and one idea only. It’s about winning.
“We decided to go in this direction for a lot of reasons. One of those reasons is this: it’s to create a team that will be successful in playoff competition and bring a world’s championship to this city, this organization and this family (the Hunts.) I think that’s very, very important, you can’t lose sight of that.
“Let me tell you about this team. It’s kind of like going back to when you are in high school. You had driver’s education, you sat over there and there was a lady or man driving the car and you tried to get your license. Then all the sudden you pass your test and you get your license and your parents give you the keys. As parents we all know, you’re giving your child a key to the car and all the sudden its ‘Hmm, things might happen that I don’t like.’
“That’s kind of how this team is going to play this year. There are going to be things that happen that you don’t like. But it’s part of the process of what we are trying to build here. I don’t have to tell you that you have supported this team for a long, long time and you will continue to support it. I think it’s kind of obvious when the players were being introduced, a lot of you were stunned, because I watched your faces and you were going ‘I don’t know these guys.’
“No, you don’t know them, but they know you. They know what type of fans we have in Arrowhead Stadium. They will make you proud
“Do not under-estimate this football team. Our expectations are very high. The players know, the coaches know and I know that when we take the field in New England, we have one thing in mind: to win. That’s how they are coached and that’s how they play.
“Thank you.”

I really hope the overall plan works, but I hope they realize they’re going to have to tweak it. Being too young is somewhat less than realistic. If you’re goal is to win this year, they don’t handicap for age in the NFL.
I hope that these guys are gonna play for him like he thinks they are. I cant wait to see our young’ins step on the field and make names for themselves, as a team. I want to field a group on hungry, rabid dawgs…….Let ‘em loose Herm. Shape these men and this team back into what KC deserves. Im not even from KC, Im a Good Old Vegas boy. But, I bleed Red and Gold, and another season like last year might kill me.
I like the youth movement and Herm’s attitude. They will be energized and ready to play at New England. I just hope the 3 -4 touchdown loss won’t demoralize them for the following week. It would have been a blessing to start with the Raiders and THEN play the Pats. New England is going to want to make a big statement to the rest of the league in week 1. So sorry for these young kids. It will be ugly early.
Herm is a great, great public speaker. I hope under Herm these young players form a kind of college type unity.
To B in SC and everyone else, I guarantee you this; the Patriots will know they were in a football game. The score might end up getting lopsided, that’s fine, whether you lose by one, or fifty, it the same number regarding wins and losses. The Chiefs are going to straight bust’em in the mouth. We are young, athletic, with more than enough locker room material. By the end of the game the Pats will spit up some Chief’s red.
Herm is right on, however, the NE Pats are a playoff level team and the Chiefs are rebuilding with a massive injection of players with no history in the NFL. This first game is really a throwout. Just enjoy the game, it is meaningless because the Chiefs will be there in a year or two but not now.
Jackie Battle was the player at our table this year. I did not have the heart to tell him that the last 3 players at out table were released the following week! Jackie was great to talk to and I hope he makes the team but I can’t see the Chiefs keeping that many backs. Bob, why do the team captains not speak at the luncheon anymore?
To remember58:
The reason the team captains do not speak is that Herm wants this group to accomplish something before they flap their gums. If you were there you’ll notice how quick the speeches were. Clark Hunt was fast for him. Carl P. was fast for him. Herm talked for less than 2:30. Right now, Herm wants there to be something to talk about before the players get up there. Since even the captains don’t know all their teammates … they would just be mouthing a bunch of platitudes that wouldn’t carry much weight.
Herm knows the fans are taking a show-me attitude. He understands that completely, because that’s the attitude he takes with players.

Feeling inspired by Herm! We’ve stuck it out this long, right!?
I don’t care what they say, I like the guy.
