“Sure, luck means a lot in football. Not having a good quarterback is bad luck.”

Is It Shanny?

You gotta love this.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Chiefs are in final stages of  negotiations with former Denver head coach Mike Shanahan to replace Herm Edwards as head coach.  Mortensen said Friday evening on Sports Center that the negotiations have started up between the team and Shanahan in the last 24 hours.

But ESPN.com’s story on the matter filed after the TV report puts a slightly different spin on the situation.   The story has reporting from Mortensen, but was  not written by him says:

“Once source claims there  have been negotiations with Shanahan and that a deal was near but another said Chiefs  owner Clark Hunt has targeted Shanahan without a clear-cut result.”

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network and a guy who jumped to the league outlet after covering the Broncos in Denver, reports that there have been no negotiations between Shanahan and the Chiefs.

Here’s what Schefter posted on NFL.com:

“Despite rampant reports that the Chiefs are negotiating with former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan to replace Herm Edwards, they are not, sources said Friday. The Chiefs never have made any contact with Shanahan — never.  And there have been no contract negotiations.

“So unless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan will not be the next coach of the Chiefs. It’s not happening. People can keep talking as if it is, but it’s not. Shanahan will not be the coach of the Chiefs in 2009.”

Shanahan spoke to former Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham from a golf course in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico on Thursday.

The Chiefs had nothing to say Friday afternoon on a replacement for Edwards.

So,  this will be interesting to see which one of the big-time NFL information guys has it right, and which one has it wrong.

Wow! Is the google about to go from a lying SOB to our shrewd coach who misleads to avoid giving away any valuable information to the opposition? One thing I know about this guy. He can coach. Hopefully if it happens, he gets a good coordinator and Pioli handles picking the groceries.

  • January 23, 2009  - Johnfromfairfax says:

    I’m referring to a D coordinator.

  • January 23, 2009  - B in SC says:

I don’t think Pioli would be willing to sign him if he wasn’t going to play ball the Chief’s way. Just having a GM will make Shanahan a better coach.

    I agree B in SC.

I don’t want that SOB here this year or any year. He is an egomaniac and I can’t stand him. I have flipped him off ever time his face curses the TV and have hated him for so long I just could not picture him in red unless the red is his blood!
Thank you for letting me get that out – Mortensen is an Idiot.

What will be REALLY interesting is how Mort or Schefter will frame it when he’s proven to be totally and completely wrong.

Thats the way I see it .
Is L.J. going to help Herm pack ?

  • January 23, 2009  - Jason says:

I agree with josh. I dont want to see shanahan in red and nowhere near the chiefs sidelines.

If the Chiefs do hire Shanny you guys need to get over yourselves real fast. The only reason most of you hate the man (myself included, rest assured) is that he makes our team look terrible every year and has done so on a consistent basis. Now maybe OUR team will be the one running the awesome bootlegs while the OTHER team’s DEs over-pursue like some chumps!

  • January 23, 2009  - MenInRed says:

The number 1 thing I diss like about Shanny is
He is buddies with George W.

  • January 23, 2009  - colby says:

Also, this will only be effective if Pioli is picking the defensive players. Shanny can pick em on offense all day long but he can’t evaluate talent on the D. I’m willing to wager Pioli can though. This is exciting if it’s true.

  • January 23, 2009  - MenInRed says:

Adam Schefter was just on NFL network via his cell phone and said he knows for a FACT that Mike Shanahan will NOT be coaching the Chiefs in 2009.

  • January 23, 2009  - B in SC says:

Interesting battle between Mort and Adam. Almost as good as the Chief’s saga. I noticed that the wording on ESPN has been changed to say the Chiefs are “targeting” Shanahan. Maybe Schefter has the upper hand?

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

I’m skeptical, I don’t [see] gooch eye being a Chief. lol

  • January 23, 2009  - Kevin B. says:

Shanahan is innovatie and brings it every year. I for one would love to see Shanarat packing an arrowhead in Denver

  • January 23, 2009  - SG says:

Why would we hire someone dumped by both Oakland AND Denver?

  • January 23, 2009  - Nick says:

Seriously! As tight-lipped as Pioli has proved to be thus far, does anyone here believe “sources” say this and that. Im not buyin it yet.

  • January 23, 2009  - Josh says:

I don’t have to get over anything. I will be a Chiefs fan no matter what but if he hired as HC I will hate him and question ever move, call, speech, fart he ever makes (much like many where when Herm was here or Marty or Carl). And, he didn’t make us look to silly anymore than we made him look (16-15 against the Chiefs and only 4-12 in Arrowhead). He is a pompous ass and I will never respect him.

Bob, are you even in the loop anymore?

Last I read, you were wanting CP and Herm to get extensions.

At least Adam Schefter is bringing some news. All you are doing is commenting on what he is reporting. Kinda like I am doing about your blog post.

  • January 23, 2009  - findthedr says:

    For the record,

I despise Horseface even more than Herm, and dont want him as the chiefs HC.

  • January 23, 2009  - tm1946 says:

Watch out for Gailey as the next headcoach.

  • January 23, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

I can’t believe that anyone even believes that this is a possibility. All you have to do is pay attention to the situation.

Number 1: Pioli just came from a situation where the head coach had all the real power and final say on all football operations. He now has the power and he is not about to bring in a coach that will challenge for that power.

Number 2: Shanny just came from a situation where he had all the power. He had final say on all football operations. He didn’t have to have it that way, that is the way he wanted it.

The politics of these teams has a lot to do with how successful they are. Power struggles are not condusive to building a championship team.

Some of you are dreaming and others are worring for nothing. If I am wrong I will never post on this blog again. I am going with Schefter on this one.

True says:If I am wrong I will never post on this blog again. I am going with Schefter on this one.

I think your right true on what you said but don’t say this. You bring your own insight to this blog. I for one would hate to see you go anywhere else. We don’t have a clue about what Pioli is thinking which is kind of fun. But, mistakes can be made.

  • January 23, 2009  - B in SC says:

ESPN: “Sources” (gotta love ‘em) say that Shanahan signing with the Chiefs is now unlikely…….and Mort eases on out the door.

Schefter said to watch out for Gailey as well. Kind of makes sense in a way. KC supposedly denied TB permission to interview him. Why would you do that if you weren’t going to keep him? And why would you keep an OC if you didn’t have your head coach yet? HMMMMMM

    Who knows???

  • January 23, 2009  - Josh says:

If your Al in Oakland you keep or get all your assistant coaches/coordinators and then try to get a HC.

  • January 23, 2009  - DanKCFan says:

Agree with TRG also I will trust Schefter before I would trust anything the DORKS on ESPN say or report.

  • January 23, 2009  - DanKCFan says:

LOL true so true Josh only in AL’s world.

  • January 23, 2009  - Josh says:

LOL Dorks at ESPN – off the subject but best line I have heard about one of those guys – “Sean Sean Salisbury, I wouldn’t “steak” my future on him”

Now here’s an actual valid question – which bbq in KC is the best?

Also, is there anyone who has some inside scoop on “what’s left of the Chiefs Scouting Department” and who they’re drooling over down at the Senior Bowl?

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

on bbq in kc, I say flip a coin between Gates and Arthur <?) Bryant’s. Never had Ok. Joe’s.

1.Who in their right mind would offer a HC job to any coach that just finished a 2-14 season?
2.Change is good. 9-7 got the Cardinals into the Superbowl. 11-5 got the Dolphins to the play-offs.
    Change is good.
    3. BBQ you say?? R.J,’s BOBAQUE in mission,58th and Lamar.
