How The Chiefs Can Beat the Chargers
From La Jolla, California
Under clear blue skies and temperatures in the high 70s, the Chiefs went through a short walk-through practice on Saturday at University High School. It was more of a mental practice than physical. Just enough to get the blood moving and another opportunity to go over the details before Sunday’s game against the Chargers.
On paper, this doesn’t look good for the Chiefs. San Diego is coming off its bye week. The Chargers have been a disappointment this year and as a veteran team, they know it’s time for them to turn it on. Denver’s victory over Cleveland on Thursday night also brings a sense of urgency to Norv Turner’s team.
The Chiefs could play the same type of game they did against the New York Jets and Tampa Bay and get walloped by the Chargers. But beyond the obvious elements we always mention, there are several other key items that if the Chiefs can accomplish them, will greatly improve their chances for victory.

Sorry SD , but this is going an outing / someone gonna get hurt! This group of CHIEFS are on FIRE ,I know they are because of whats happened in the last 2 weeks . Im watching this game locked in a room by my self , if someone were to say something & I miss something Id punch em out .———- I could name them ,Zebra ETC. but we all know + there are some new guys looking for something , and I would guess they know and this puts them in the right place at the right time .
Hey Bob don’t put the “is” so closely to Tyler’s last name….(i.e. Thig pen_is)
Just an observation.
San Diego is poorly coached and poorly motivated. The Chiefs need to go for the throat in the first quarter and first half.
Then, don’t rest on their laurels and allow Herm to give the game away like against Tampa Bay
Jim Lloyd you sound like quite the optimist. I see us getting the crap kicked out of us, once again.
I’m really worried about this game because Brandon Flowers isn’t going to play.
ROFLMAO pacific chief!
Agree Mark, chiefs need to have a lead.
Kevin, I dont see us getting the crap kicked out of us, but I dont see us winning (though I hope we do).

We’ve had plenty of problems on defense this year, but it’s going to be really bad Sunday.
-Derrick Johnson is out
-Surtain is out
-Flowers is said to have had a setback with his injury Friday in practice so probably will be out.
-McBride, Page and Morgan are questionable with injuries so even if they play they will be playing at less than 100%.
-Donnie Edwards has been in and out all year and is not playing up to speed.
This leaves us likely with at least 4 waiver wire guys that have been with the team 3 days that could be starting.
And we’re playing San Diego with a healthy LaDanian Tomlinson.
It won’t be pretty.
Im not going to say they are going to win or lose. They are going to show , to play the game . # 1 with a full bucket of talent , # 2 Given a Ray Lewis type of attitude !–Im not going to miss it & if they do win , O-BOY will yhis make Herm look like he all of sudden he can walk on water &-& probably fill the old ARENA - thats all from me , Im ready —-
Guys and Gals, sundays chiefs will not be able to field 22 starters on defense and offense. If the chiefs will with this bunch, some coaches should go to the pro bowl. Home field advantage is worth 3 points and being about to field a team that has been together for 1/2 year is worth 6. So I figure the chiefs lose by 9 minimum.
If you take Flowers out of the game, it makes the defense far worse than it is….Sadly this doesnt look promising unless they throw at Carr all day.
well looking for a win tommorrow we picked up some veterans so maybe they can step up looking for a job and we get a win need to pressure rivers and play cosistant offense ourselves Chiefs by 6 this week the san diego d is worse than before we need this win if we want to catch the donkeys
they won’t have to pick on Carr if Maclin is on the other side… I remember with Indy and Arizona he was a guy the other team would throw at all day long.
Bob do you consider Dorsey a bust? He seems to get blown off the ball 8 out of 10 times. He is a non-factor in games.
I think the game is to fast for dorsey looks to me like he is starting to get it hope he figures it out soon GO CHIEFS
The Chiefs can win this game. Keep attacking on offense, stay creative. Thigpen continue the smart, energetic play. Lean on your horses: Bowe, Gonzalez, Charles, but keep them off-balance with the trick plays and by utilizing the other offensive skill guys: Cottam, Cox, Bradley. Like to see some dump-offs to Cox, and get Will Franklin involved, maybe on some reverses to use his speed. Like the direct snaps to Charles; would try Bradley there, too. Savage will run hard, but I think Battle should carry more. This would be a good day for Bowe and Gonzales to play out of their minds. They’re both due for a monster outing.
Defense. Have to get turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, which they’ve been doing a good job of this year. They always go after the ball, which is good to see. Hopefully, the DL will continue to improve against the rush. Keep mixing in the vets, Edwards and Boone, more. At least no long gone runs. Always need more pressure on the QB, but especially so with all the new faces in the secondary. Only way to cover that up, pressure. If not with the front four; lots of stunts on the line, and blitz til the cows come home. Do some quirky stuff on defense. Suprise causes hesitation, works to your advantage. Who knows, line up in some bizarre-looking sets or something. No time to try to play it safe. I think you line up Carr and Leggett, with Macklin or Colclough in nickel. Leggett has little experience, even by Chiefs’ standards, but he’s got a ton of speed. That can save you sometimes. Colclough’s an interesting player, with a real chance here to redeem a once-promising career. Curious to see what Johnston and Gilberry can do at end, as well as Boiman at linebacker. Several new faces out there. Can’t think to much, just play. McGraw needs to step up, big time. He is capable of some decent play. Hali, Tank, Turk, DORSEY, Johnston, et.al-stick together guys, keep your heads up. I believe better days are ahead for this DL.
Try a fake punt or an onside kick-or a reverse or backwards pass on a return. I like Savage, but try the speed of Franklin or Colclough on kickoff returns. Walden and Pollard have to step up on special teams again.
For all the young Chiefs…they are no longer rookies or yougsters with no experience. Been through the camps and half a season in the NFL. No more wide-eyes. Do your job, play hard, make plays.
Michael , your right– more than just right , it is not just winning , its how the game is played .Green Bay has a waiting list of years and no where near the # s of fans to draw from , as here and a lot of other citys . The last 2 weeks has been a lot of fun to watch , when you dont know what is going to happen , thats everthing ! Watching all these huge linemen shoving and pushing , then here comes some one 2 thirds of any one of these guys size , and you know whats going to happen — wake me when things change . Running on first down is not going to do any thing any more , but stunts give you some aray of confusion , if they dont work , so what ,neither did all trys to run without LT, —-O , wait he cant even do it any more , wats up with that. Heres what no one would see comming , Herms all RUN-RUN , and how do you get set for a lot of this stunting . Weather they win or lose , this would be the greatest show on Sunday !
My keys to winning the game. Is one go back to playing Herm ball aka Marty ball. Not necessarily running all the time mix in some pass plays. More of controling the clock and keeping the Chargers offense off the field. WE can’t make this a shoot out we don’t have enough healthy guys on defense to afford to do that. And offense must score points throughout the game.
Next would be special teams needs to make tackles. Do not allow Sproles to make big plays in punt or kick return games. Its killed our momentum the last two weeks.
And last defense do whatever u can to get off the field on third downs. Continue creating turnovers, but doesn’t mean squat when u comeback on the next possesion and give up a touchdown or big plays.
Run the ball on offense? One game as of half a season. I am sure it will just pop up against the chargers.
Sp. Teams tackle? The entire league has issues about tackling, it does not show up on Sports Center. The chiefs are lousy a tackling and now you think it will fix itself after half a season of losing.
Def gets off the field after third down? This has not happened all season remember they only won one game this year. The Def Line, my personal favorite beating boy, is full of high draft picks who have not figured out how to play the stinking game on a regular basis.
WOW, it is obvious you really got this team figured out.
