Herm Says
Chiefs released a statement from Herm Edwards after his firing:
“First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Hunt Family for the opportunity to spend nine seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve as the head coach of ‘Lamar’s Team’ the past three seasons. Lamar was a special, special man, who provided tremendous opportunities to so many, myself included.Â
Â
“There is not a more gracious family in all of professional sports than the Hunts. To Norma, Clark and Tavia, Lamar, Jr. and Rita, Sharron and David, and Dan, I would like to thank them for all of them for the encouragement and many kindnesses they extended to me, my wife, Lia, and our entire family over the years. The Chiefs franchise is clearly in good hands for many years to come under Clark’s leadership. I have no doubt that Clark and Scott Pioli will continue to steer the Chiefs in the right direction.Â
Â
“I would be remiss if I did not thank Carl Peterson for his support and friendship over the years. He gave me my first opportunity as a player in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also gave me a chance to coach in the league both as an assistant and as a head coach. What a remarkably positive impact Carl made on the lives of so many.
Â
“There are many fine, fine people in the Kansas City Chiefs organization too numerous to mention who worked so tirelessly to help our football team. I am fortunate to call so many of them friends. I am a better man and a better coach in so many ways because of them. Hopefully, they feel the same way because of our time together.Â
Â
“Finally, to the players and coaches who worked so hard for our team, I appreciate their efforts. This is going to be a very good football team. The support of Chiefs fans across the country has been tremendous. They are truly passionate about their football team. Chiefs fans will be proud to cheer for this team for many years to come. With the tremendous nucleus of young talent on this roster, I sincerely believe that his team is poised to do great things. I respect the tough decision that was made to move in a new direction. I wish the players and the organization the very best as they move forward.â€Â

What a crock. They should have at least let him finish what he started.
He gets 4 million to be unemployed next year. You want me to feel sorry for him? Plus, if they would have gotten better as the season progressed, I think many of us would agree with you. However, they only got worse. I am sure that factored into the decision.
I think he would have been saved if the defense had shown improvement. That was the one area that he targeted for improvement when he first arrived and after 3 years it only got worse.
At what point would you declare him “finished”? What if they won 6 games next year? Keep him? Better to cut the cord now with a new GM.
He had one more year on his contract and I didn’t say I felt sorry for him UT.
When it comes down to it, its Pioli that puts his ass on the line, im not going to second guess any hiring/firing.
JUST WIN BABY!!!!!!
He did finish with a 2-14 record and you think he should of kept his job?
LOL
Goodbye & Goodluck Herm, you’ll need it my friend.
This will be the LAST Head Coaching job Herman Edwards will EVER have in the NFL. Write that down for later you Hermites.
A good man just not a good Head Coach.
Timecheck: 5:22 PM and Herm’s…unemployed!!!
Eat it Rin!
Yeah I did. I think he should have kept it for one more year. We got rid of the bad in CarlP and Gunther. Who is to know now? Gunthers defense couldnt stop my nephews from scoring a touchdown. 5 years of Gunther is enough to make a person scream. Most of you blame Herm for the Defense that didn’t produce. I don’t think he had a choice with Peterson and Cunningham around. If our D could of made the stops when they were suppose to we wouldnt be discussing it
Time check… 5:32 P.M. Central… Herm is NOT the man.
I still don’t know how I feel.
Where the heck is Rin at? I’ll still waiting for how you feel, Rin
Carlm,
didnt you read the link Bob posted on his site yesterday from Gun and how his hands were tied by Herm to the Defense we have seen the last 3 years. That was all Herm Edwards. Now granted that if Gun didn’t like it and was forced by Herm to run it maybe he didn’t do as good as he could have with it.
It wasn’t Gunther’s defense, it was Herm’s defense that Herm insisted on having Gunther run, contrary to the way Gunther believes a defense should be. Gunther’s a good man, and I suspect he’ll do real well in Detroit. He has a proven record of success. Herm??? He might be a decent DB Coach, but I suspect he’ll sit out the year, collect his money, and look at what 2010 has to offer. He’ll probably get a TV job this year.
Yeah herm sure had a lot of say in who his defensive coordinator was didn’t he. Dungy used the tampa 2 for years with success how come the great gunther cunningham couldn’t and how come gunther couldn’t get a good defense when vermeil was here. He had all of the choices. USELESS is a good word for gunther. The only time he ever coached a decent defense is when shotty was here. I remember that time very well and he always put them in a prevent in the last half of the games and we would lose. So, quit trying to con me he stinks and always will. I feel sorry for the Lion’s. If he is running their defense they will be lucky if they win one game next year.
You can’t buy a Hummer and expect to drive it like a NASCAR. Thats where Herm and Gunther went wrong. Gun was a blitz the hell out of them, and Herm wanted cover 2.
No matter though. Their both gone now, so lets get behind our next HC (please God, don’t let it be Shanahan) and get ready for an awesome year next season!!
It won’t be awesome Men we are back to rebuilding again. Best we can do now is maybe 4-12
Sorry meant RedandGoldRice
Carlm, you can’t keep a coach with just one year left on his deal and simultaneously hire an entirely new defensive staff for just one year. No decent coach wants to sign on with a team for one year without knowing if the head coach will be there the next. The only way you can keep Herm is to give him an extension. That’s just reality man! Herm for one more year was an unrealistic Hermite fantasy once Priefer, Gibbs, and Goon all jumped ship. This is for the best. No one (except that @$$ wart Rin and Bob) thought that Herm deserved an extension. He didn’t. Plain and simple.
Good riddance Herm. Go be a college head coach. You can’t help but have all young players on that level of competition you clown! Ah! What a gorgeous night!
Herm said we were 85% complete. I don’t think we were even that far, so basically we’re in a rebuild with or without him.
I guess the biggest thing for me was, why let Herm keep drafting players that fit his mold when we’d have a new HC in the next couple years one way or another. It made better sense to go ahead a pull the trigger now so that the next guy, who per Clark Hunt, would be a fixture for the next 10-15 years could start picking football players that fit his vision. Players that Pioli could take in the draft that fit what his HC requested. Thats just my opinion anyway.
I’ll tell ya where Rin is. He crawled out on that limb & then sawed himself off! He’s layin’ on the ground somwhere seeing 3 of everything & choking on all the humble pie he bought before he climbed up the Hermie tree all the while reprising Judy Garland’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.
Colby, I agree on some of your points. But, he did sign a contract. The Chiefs have to pay him anyway and I did discuss this on another thread here that if I was an NFL coach bringing a defense back from the dead in one year would be one of the greatest accomplishments ever. It would be a feather in my cap. I did that it wouldnt matter whether I was let go the next year or not. I would have the oppurtunity somewhere else just because of what I did.
I will say Carl…4-12 next year would double our wins.
As far as the defense goes…he targeted improvement on that side from day one. He has been improving it for 3 years, not 1. It has only gotten worse. I have to think that was his biggest downfall.
Much respect to you Herm and whatever comes your way-you are a great man of great character.
That is true B. But, he had gunther as a coordinator.
I will say this….Carl embarrassed himself on the way out. Herm handled himself with class. In the end they both failed.
All one has to say is that winning 6 games out of the past 32 is not a basis for staying employed. If both Herm and Carl were NOT fired after such a dismal performance over two seasons, one must have considered the possibility that the ownership would be hoping to sell the team soon.
It wasn’t dismal just over the last two years SG it was dismal for the last 10. Peterson should have gone away then. Lamar was very loyal to Peterson and Peterson wore out his welcome a long time ago.
Mort is already backpedaling on ESPN. Coupled with the unequivocal denial from Shefter, who is from Denver with presumably decent connections, I’d say Shanahan is unlikely. I hate these media guys.
I think Herm was undermined by the trade of JA. I think Herm wouldve done well with different circumstances. God bless ya Herm. Good luck
Why not Gruden?
See what happens when you leave the country, rin is supposedly in France.
Honestly we do not agree on much. The chiefs tried a different way after Vermeil. It was needed but about as badly acted on as any team has ever tried in the NFL. Herm may be a real NFL head coach but you could not prove it by how he operated in KC. Infatuation with Brodie, refusal to sign FAs, and keeping coor. who did not, could not, or would not understand herms way. Nothing happens in a vaccumm, Herm had lots of help failing.
Looking forward, there is a NEW plan. We fans can buy into Pioli’s plan for several years to come. With two good drafts and solid coaches, we have hope. Truthfully, did anyone have hope with Carl or Herm?
For Carlm, 4 mil is petty cash in the NFL. Herm deserves it. I wish him the best. I doubt he is really a head coach. May be a great scouting dir. or def coor. but did not handle head coaching duties during games, sorry, but he seemed clueless.
Herm’s timing was bad inheriting an aged team, a declining GM, and ownership in generational transition. But still, there was a disconnect between Herm’s principles and the team’s performance on Gameday. It just didn’t translate for some reason. Perhaps it came unglued when he trotted out the road white uniforms in his opening day at Arrowhead. The football gods couldn’t have been pleased.
Instead of eating the $4 million in his contract, I would have demoted him to DB coach and scout.
Herm did leave with class, I’ll give him that.
Mark, I’m glad that you mentioned uniforms, now that Pioli has taken care of a few minor details,
him and Clark need to address the important things, like getting rid of those red pants! Go back to all white roadies!
ESPN’s Chris Mortenson reported an hour ago that “there have been negotiations with Shanahan and that a deal was near”. Now he says that Clark has “targeted” him, but that Shanahan may not be interested. Sounds kinda like when I targeted Heidi Klum.
If Heidi Klum is avaiable, I am available. She might makes a heck of a strength coach. Get you to do that heavy lifting.
John (sorry the ex got the “D”), I hereby nominate you for uniform Czar. Nobody ever did anything good in red pants.
Lmao Mark, Mort better be careful, he’s liable to pull a groin or hammy backin up that fast. Hate to see him IR’d.
tm you better behave your self, Momma’s gonna take the remote for the new big screen if not. lol
Herm,
Good Luck in whatever direction you go in. I believe that you can coach in the NFL and I hope you continue down that path. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you. This is just another one of those character builders that will only make you stronger. Again Good Luck and God Bless to you and your family!
Just in time for the Herm Coors Light commercials for the Super Bowl.
Hey BobGretz, man who’s the sleeper players Pioli’s guys have identified at the Senior Bowl?
Also, what are our real odds of seeing DT58 in the HOF where he belongs?
Herm,
I for one am sorry to see ya go. I would have liked to see what you would have done next year. Much respect for you. I hope you go to a team that will execute your plan. Regardless I’ve seen improvement and the Young kids on this team may not have won the amount of games but they are close. Your a true Professional I hope our next HC has the Character that you have.
Well with the above said. DevilDawg where’s that truck?
BEEP BEEP BEEP
Herm needs to pack it up.
Chris-Texas
Man they are still loading the last of the excuses, it has taken two whole days to pack them into two trucks. Rumor has it that Herm, all of his stuff and his 85% plan are on the way to Oakland!!!
Don’t go there DevilDawg I’m probably asking for it but I don’t want to see Herm in Oakland. For one I don’t think he would want to put up with Al Davis.
Just kiddin’ that is the only job left open, I think. Oh yea except for the one he just left.
In all honesty I don’t think that even Al Davis would hire Herm after his little 2-14 deal here.
And one last thing, how in he world does Al D. get anyone to take the job? Year after year… amazing absolutly amazing.
I have to tel all of you I did not read one word that Herm said…… why would I? Maybe that is a little cold but holy cow I needed to watch some paint dry instead.
I’m not sure how Al Davis gets any coach’s I guess if you have never coached and don’t mind the GM telling you what plays to run and calling you in the middle of the night to change your game plan. Hope he keeps it up.
Did anyone really think Pioli’s and Herm’s philosophies on the field matched? What part of Piloi’s history tells anyone he would want a team running the cover 2? I give props to Herm for, most likely, evaluating the roster with Pioli, knowing he wasnt coming back as coach. Have no doubt he was honest with his assessment because it is how he his. But its time to move on. Or as herm says ….. GET OVER IT… Herm will no doubt find another job if he chooses. He just isnt a HC.. Thanks for your service Herm…… cant wait for your Coors commercials.
It might look good on a coaching resume. If you can deal with Big Al’s micromanagement. You can d anything. I am sure it would be an uphill battle every day, and who knows he was a good coach.
Well ya’ll have a good weekend I’m out so is Herm I Just hope we get a coach with lots of intensity and doesn’t put up with players crap.
Chris_Texas? No time check in Rin’s place? … but…but…. Herm’s the man…….?
BTW…. Its 11:38 PM CST ……. heh. 2338 for all the military guys.
All knowledgeable Rin Spin Spin, what the internet doesnt work in Europe? Your pathetic ramblings and self promoting B.S. have reduced you to nothing. Go write your sycophantic Herm loving refuse somewhere else. For me personally its been great to not see you posts for the last week, and everyone else loves it too. Hopefully youll have enough common sense and dignity to not come back. Herm is not the man, thank GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rins a queer bag
This man has represented the Chiefs with class and insisted that the players under him do the same. Thank you Herm. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Dave H (which I am sure stands for HOMER), you are an ass, Please do not speak for me.
