Response was substantive and thought out rather than full of hot air. It’s nice when Chiefs fans use sound mind to outwit their opponents while their teams crush their opponents on the field. Now that I’ve tried for the last time to give some you a heads up on that….

Let’s not leave out that it was the Cards Offense that gave up a 100 yard pick six.

That was squarely on Warner’s shoulders, with an assist by every other guy that missed making a tackle on that play. Can’t blame that on Haley or Pendergast.

I’m already regretting this comment, I feel like, although indirectly, that I am violating my own rule about responding to… well you get the picture.

Incidentally, I think the Cards W-L record from last season is close to meaningless as a basis for predicting Pendergast’s success with the Chiefs. I’m certainly not arguing that the Cards Super Bowl appearance proves Pendergast will be a good DC for the Chiefs. There are too many variables involved. On the other hand, the argument that he lost the Super Bowl and therefore cannot help the Chiefs is laughable.

In response to the (very reasonable doubts) you expressed about Pendergast I’d say that:
- Whisenhunt reportedly wanted to get rid of Pendergast before last season even started. Certainly not a reason to give Clancy a mulligan, but it does raise the question of whether the firing was entirely based on last season’s performance.
- The Cards passing D certainly tanked on that final Super Bowl drive, but they also gave up fewer passing yards in the playoffs than the vaunted Steelers D, and out-intercepted the Steelers D in the playoffs 9-5 (based largely on the Delhomme meltdown, of course).

So go now, let sleeping dogs lie/lay, tempt Rin no more at this moment, afore He biteth you ‘gain.

OAK beat the Chiefs twice in 1969 & in fact beat them 6 times in 7 games going into the AFL Title Game of ’69 – too, the Chiefs wouldn’t even have been there at all except for that 1 year ‘fluke’ playoff system.

KC won that last game – OAK lost it. Did OAK feel ‘better’ because they had a batter record in ’69 than KC, or SD, or MIA, or DALL, or GB, or ‘any’ other team in pro football?

This is no different than say the argument for one of my favorite Chiefs ever, WR Otis Taylor, being HOF worthy.

Do I really? And it doesn’t bother anyone here that Clancy is secondary coach…and it was secondary that gave up a truckload of TD’s last year and couldn’t keep Santonio Holmes of all people from lighting them up in the Super Bowl…

Being balanced, it’s fully legit to question Rin and say he’s smoking drugs (hint-hint, we should) when he suggests that Herm and Co. did such a great job the past three years, and also fair to have enough intellectual honesty to admit our team’s issues too.

Great points about taking Herm out of the equation. Speaking of equations lets look at the common denominator…Gunther. As you stated he was in charge before Herm arrived and the defense sucked. Now that he no longer factors in perhaps our defense will stop under-performing? Then again Krumrie may be part of the problem. If so Haley seems to be the kind of guy to drop the axe when necessary.

Not sure about the rest of you, but I’m tired of speculating about the ’09 Chiefs.

Oh, I know how the past few years have been. But, I still have to hope every year is THE year we’ll kick some ass. Especially at THIS time of the year!

I’m on record for 10 wins this year…give or take a game. Optomistic? Yes, very. Do-able? Yes, it is. We have a tough schedule, for sure. But you know what…that’s why they actually PLAY the games. Because you don’t know who’s going to win until the clock hits 00. But I’m certainly not going to put a tombstone on the season on the first of July, like some have.

I can think of a few differences: one team gave themselves an opportunity to win a championship, the other gave themselves NO chance. One team won 3 win-or-go-home games (2 against teams that stomped the Chiefs), the other failed nearly every time they had an opportunity to put a game away. One team was notable for their successes, the other was notable for their failures.

Equating the last season’s Chiefs with last season’s Cards is sophistry trumping common sense; I guess when you’re advancing the position that there was nothing wrong with the regime that brought us the miserable 2008 Chiefs, you have to use every trick you can conjure.

You failed to say which one was which…and I thought Curl was one of Herm’s coaches.

Even more telling…will our pass defense be exposed due to more aggressiveness and/or will we still be struggling to stop the run? The need of the situation is that KC significantly improve defensively – as our point production likely will be level or decreased this season. It appears that not enough has been done personnel-wise to offset the loss from Gonzalez. That’s what makes it hard to buy into projections for 2009 with more than 5-6 wins.

IMO, Herm wanted to run the Tampa 2 (West version) here, but the other coaches (Krummrie and Gunther) either weren’t capable or didn’t believe in what Herm wanted to do.

That brings to mind all those impassioned speaches by Gunther on how nice it was to have a defensive minded coach (Herm) that “thought along the same mindset as he did” as compared to Vermeil. Makes you wonder if he really meant it or had an idea of how badly things were headed.

I don’t think Todd will have a problem like that. I don’t think Haley would hang on to a coach if he thought the guy wasn’t or couldn’t coach his players the way he wanted them coached. He’s made that very clear to this point. In that aspect, I’d think if a position coach or coordinator isn’t cutting it, he’d get the axe.

Krummrie has been with the chiefs for 5yrs, which is longer than Herm has. Take Herm out of the equation and you still have a crappy defense.

Same can be said about Gunther who was the D-coordinator under both Vermiel and Herm.

Tamba Hali, Tank Tyler, Turk McBride, Glenn Dorsey, Brian Johnston…how many of these guys looked anything like good starters in their time under Krumrie’s tutelage? Hali comes closest and he’s gone backwards every year he’s played for Krumrie. Dorsey comes second closest and while he “led all rookie DTs in tackles”, 46 tackles and 1 sack on a porous defensive line that’s historically bad at pass defense is hardly anything to write home about. None of the others even looks like starting material at this point…at least not on an average defense.

Again…just a thought.

Pendergast is about the only one that’s half way intriguing imo, providing he doesn’t try to change his scheme every week, as some have suggested he done in Az.

Krumrie! I have to believe he was retained because NO ONE else was available. There’s a hell of a lot more to Coaching than screaming “YOU GOTTA GET RID OF THAT GUY” as we all have heard and seen that snippet of audio and video a million times. How about teaching them how to “get rid of that guy” using some technique?
If I remember correctly Krumrie played for Cincy, but does anyone remember were they running a 34 then?
