“Baseball is what we were; football is what we have become.”

From The Mouth Of Todd 9/28

From the Truman Sports Complex

Everything around the Chiefs these days is very fluid, and that includes the head coach’s weekly press conference. It will now be held Monday afternoon rather than Tuesday.

So Todd Haley met with the media horde and answered questions for 24 minutes at the Chiefs offices. Naturally, the theme revolved around the Chiefs 34-14 loss on Sunday to the Eagles.

Here’s some of the best of what Haley had to say.

ON THE DIRECTION THE CHIEFS GO FROM HERE

“I think it’s pretty clear that our margin of error is not real great right at this time, so we must as a team and as a coaching staff really do everything right – all the little things including technique, decision making – especially against a team like Philadelphia. We weren’t (doing things right) and that’s why we saw the result that we had.

“We’ve got to continue to coach discipline. We just have to get better at the little things. When your margin of error is small you can’t align a yard out of place, or allow a big play to happen. We need to have all those little things coached hard, coached correctly and then we need to execute. I don’t think we do a whole lot different other than focus and not let anything slide. That’s the direction.”

ON HIS CONCERNS DURING PRE-GAME WARMUPS

“In pre-game I was even a little worried because of the overall mood and the way some guys were acting … having coached and been out in that situation a bunch as a position coach and coordinator, that’s a game us coaches play all the time: what do you think? We talk to each other. What are they acting like, what’s your feel? Yesterday in particular it wasn’t a very good feel that I had of what I was seeing. In fact, in seven-on-seven which is a throwing drill I ended up getting ticked off and handing the ball off about eight straight times. The energy, the movement was bothersome to me.”

ON WHY HE USED THE RUNNING GAME SO MUCH IN THE SECOND HALF

“I got to halftime and I thought to myself, what are we doing? We need to make some progress in this game. I just felt like our best chance offensively to make progress was to figure out what we wanted to do. It was, in my gut and as the head coach that something had to be done to benefit this team. Not in that particular game but to benefit this team as we go forward, to establish our mindset and to lay it out there. Let’s see who’s got what. I think you started to see some signs of guys deciding whether they were going to lay down or they were going to fight. I saw some positive signs despite the outcome of the game.

HIS EVALUATION OF NO. 1 DRAFT PICK DE TYSON JACKSON

“With that particular position it is difficult. I’m not making excuses for the player because he needs to be better and we need to get him better. He can’t take steps back. That’s what I would say. I just want to see steady improvement and not the yo-yo stuff. He’s working hard and is into it but it is a big job, a big job.”

HAS BRANDON ALBERT REGRESSED IN HIS DEVELOPMENT

“I don’t know if I’d go that far. I would say that yesterday was not his best and I think he would tell you that. That’s a player who has worked hard and is trying to do all the right things that went south yesterday. I think he’s as disappointed as we are and that’s a good thing.”

    a) I can’t even win one stinkin’ football game with 53 guys… I S**K!!!

    b) Man… I’m here in the rough- er, on the road with but a putter- er, punter, when what I really need here is a wedgie- er, short wedge game – NO, D****T! – I mean a flying wedge play – what would Nicklaus do?

    c) Where did I put my “Football For Dummies” book?
    :-(

Concentration has a lot to do with being relaxed and focused. You cannot be afraid of making a mistake every second. When you’re always afraid of making a mistake what are you focused on? MISTAKES! You become a magnet for mistakes. Someone once said the best way to inspire people to excellence is to reward the behaviors you want…and ignore the rest. Study the successes now and then. It’ll uplift the fairly depressed mood there appears to be around One Arrowhead Drive.

For a guy who didn’t play football Haley has a lot of football sense. I coach and I know exactly what he is talking about. I liked his comments about his pregame feelings and I had an idea Sunday why he was running the ball so much in the second half. He wasn’t trying to win that game (he knew he couldn’t) but he was trying to get something out of it. I liked it but at the same time I knew he would take some heat for it. (his play calling) I figured the arm chair QBs would have something to say about it. The more this guys talks and coaches the more I like him. Now that probably doesn’t say much for the guy because I also liked Herman Edwards.

It is funny, you can’t be too nice to these players (Herm) and you can’t be too tough (Todd) or it reflects poorly on their performance….Let’s quit over analyzing the coaches and focus on what these guys are doing on the field. If they are men then they are embarassed about being spanked in public Sunday and THEY will look at themselves and fix it. This is about where they were last year when they manned up and beat Denver (before they fell back asleep again). It’s not the coach, he is working his butt off looking for players that will get it done. I don’t love any of these players, they need to earn our praise and respect by WINNING. As fans we gave these guys a great crowd against the Raiders, we did our job; they need to do theirs,

Cannot win with these players. Sorry but we need WAY more star power. Only 6-7 of these players would be starters on other NFL teams. The rest would not even make someone elses practice squad. Sorry but the truth hurts.

Just saw that Sporting News named Scott Pioli the “NFL Executive of the Decade.”

    That guy hired Todd Haley.

I have no problem being patient.

I hate the “no talent” thing. Great players are seldon physical freaks; they learn how to be good, they study and they are smart. If we had enough guys like that they would say we had talent. Many great players were never drafted…they wanted more, they worked and became great. We need those guys.

If nobody here has an idea, then at least click on the ads so Bob can still keep this site going. Otherwise, share some thought. I don’t mean “The O Line Sucks” or “I think the Coach/GM are terrible”. Let’s go with imagination like “If we had Drew Brees and Randy Moss and Jared Allen, we’d kick some Donkey butt”. Let’s just all have some kind of fantasy or something. Heck, we’ve already lost to the RAIDUHS…

Larry Johnson mental note: When the ball is handed to me and I look up the middle and it looks bad, go to the left/right. Whatever it takes to get more than 2 yards. I love my teamates and I’m going to RUN! Just don’t screw up my run with a facemask penalty or something STUPID!

    Bob,
I clicked on the singles ad at the top and got a virus. Just kidding, but seriously…

countryliving, needs to crawl out of the sticks once and awhile. I could name a dozen guys without even looking at the roster who would start for a lot of clubs. It is not just about the talent or the coaches. It has a lot to do with chemistry and consistency. You can’t start a rebuild and then decide OK I don’t like this and stop switch directions 180 degrees and then rebuild the rebuild without suffering the consequences. This club hasn’t really been stable since Marty. An awful lot has happen since then including the death of the owner. It isn’t just coaches that win championships and it isn’t just players. It is a whole lot of people working together for a long time.

Bottom line folk you can’t judge Pioli/Haley off the first season. Its still not there team yet. Vermeil did bad his first year here. So did Marty. It takes a couple of seasons to turn around a bad franchise and thats what we have become people of the course of the last 3 seasons. A bad franchise. Now i still think Chiefs will win about 6 games based on the second half schedule. Which would be a step in a positive direction.

Problem with this team is the fact that the offensive line is terrible. Not even close to good. Cassell have no time to throw. LJ, Charles, Salvage, and Battle are getting hit in the backfield. LJ still looks like the 2005 version when he was getting wholes open he had good runs. I know because I watched the game and not highlights. Either way this organization is going in the right direction. All the nay sayers being ignorant criticizing Haley/Pioli will look like idiots a year from now and years to come. Just goes to show you how most fans and media live in the moment and are not realist.

Question: Will we be considered a good team in a couple of years when our schedule is much easier and we play maybe 3 real contenders?

    - ED doing his best Carl Peterson Chiefs have a “5 Year Plan” improvisation…appearing nightly at the Kansas City Improv – better known as One Arrowhead Stadium’s PR Dept./Ticket Box Office.

    WHAT an entertainer!

Ed is right. It’s way too early to evaluate the coaching/GM of this team. New systems were brought in, although the demeanor of the players is a concern.

This is a pretty simple thing, but why don’t the Chiefs throw on first down vs. base defenses. Hailey is just as predictable on first down as his predecessor. The Chiefs are always in terrible down/distance situations, which gives the defense a huge advantage.
