“What’s the worst thing that can happen to a quarterback? He loses his confidence.”

Friday Morning Cup O’Chiefs

Whether it happens this week, or next Sunday at Arrowhead against Denver, Tony Gonzalez is only days away from holding every significant record for receiving by a tight end in NFL history.

Think about that for a second … dominant at one position.

No Chiefs player has ever been in this position when it comes to career numbers. Offense, defense, special teams … there isn’t anyone who ranked the best at his spot in the history of the game.

Yes, Chiefs have set league records before.  Priest Holmes for instance and his record for rushing touchdowns and overall touchdowns in a season.  Years ago WR Stephone Paige set a league record for most receptions in a game.

But when it comes to career numbers, no player in Chiefs history has ever been the statistically best at his position.

Gonzalez needs 85 receiving yards to have the most career yards for a tight end.  Ahead of him is Shannon Sharpe with 10,060.  Gonzalez has 9,976 yards. He already holds the records for most receptions (now at 831) and touchdowns (67).

OUTSIDE LOOK

USA Today has a nice story on Tony G. and his place in the game’s history and his hopes for a championship.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO …

Chiefs rookie practice squad linebacker Wes Dacus celebrates his 23rd birthday on Friday.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Gary Spani is the leading tackler in Chiefs history.  Now, he works for the Chiefs, but he also has some pretty athletically gifted daughters, including one that will make a recruiting visit for women’s basketball to the University of Tennessee.

FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY

On September 19, 1971 the Chiefs lost their season opener to the Chargers in San Diego 21-14.  The Chiefs  jumped out to a 14-0 first-half lead on touchdown runs by RB Warren McVea of six yards and RB Ed Podolak from one-yard.  The Chargers came back strong in the second half, as QB John Hadl threw touchdown passes to former K-State WR Mike Montgomery and WR Jerry Levias.  The winning TD came on a 26-yard run by RB Mike Garrett, a former member of the Chiefs.

On September 19, 1999 the Chiefs won their home opener over Denver 26-10.  The Chiefs got their running game going against the Broncos defense, racking up 188 yards rushing.  FB Kimble Anders led the way, with 22 carries for 142 yards.  FB Tony Richardson had a one-yard TD run and RB Bam Morris added a five-yard TD.  K Pete Stoyanovich drilled four field goals.  WR Derrick Alexander added six catches for 177 yards.  Defensively, S Jerome Woods and CB Eric Warfield had interceptions and LB Derrick Thomas and DE Leslie O’Neal had sacks.

OPPONENT NEXT/ATLANTA FALCONS

DE John Abraham talks about going against the Chiefs offensive line and his old coach from the New York Jets, Herm Edwards.

The Falcons special teams are aggressive, and prone to penalties.

AROUND THE NFL

The Commish is cracking down for behavior on the field, not off the field.

A bid by billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller to buy the Pittsburgh Steelers hit the skids on Thursday when four of the five Rooney brothers turned down his offer, which valued the team at $1.2 billion.

AROUND THE AFC WEST

Darren McFadden returned to practice for the Raiders.  No, he wasn’t tired from running down the throats of the Chiefs; he had a toe injury and he’s now got a steel plate in his shoe.

A look at Chargers nose tackle Jamal Williams.

Out in Denver the Broncos are 2-0, so that means somebody is a genius.  This time it’s new offensive play caller Jeremy Bates.

Tony deserves a championship, not offensive ineptitude.

The only way he will see a championship is on another team and I’m not sure how rewarding that would be in the end. Spend all of your career on one team and then go somewhere else for a season to get a ring? Might be kind of anti-climatic.

Stephone Paige’s record was for most receiving yards in a game – 309 I believe. Now it takes us 3 or 4 games to get that many passing yards.

Tony is one of the main reasons to feel proud of on this team. I want him to do as well as possible but I kind of hope he doesn’t get all 85 yards against Atlanta so he can break the record against the Broncos next week. Sharpe would probably come to KC to watch and congratulate Tony. (And it would be one ticket closer to avoiding that ugly blackout!)

Hey, we have a chance in about 5 years. I’m sure it would mean a lot if we kept him on the roster until then, kinda like the Steelers did with Betti when they won their superbowl.

Great so there will be a positive this week. Hopefully Tony doesn”t have to witness Thigpen getting his arms and legs torn off by the defense when he wins his award. At least TG can shed some of the embarrassment of being a Chief. Great career Tony. I am sorry that we stink. At least the Chiefs will make ESPN Once where Berman and Jackson are not laughing at us.

What a class act, I feel proud that we have a player of his caliber still on the team showing the young guy’s the ropes. It would be nice to see him get the super bowl ring before he retires, just not sure it will happen. It has been fun watching him his whole career since he was drafted. It seemed like a lot of people at the time didn’t think much of him coming out of college, since he was a basketball player too. Guess he showed them just how good he really could be. GO CHIEFS!

Alot of players need to follow Tony’s example. Come to work, do your job, and when you go home your the greatest the TE ever. He is CHIEFS FOOTBALL!

Tony is an amazing player and deserves every honor he has gotten and will get. He’s a hall of famer and a good guy.
