Friday Free Agency Update 2/27
Unlike past seasons, there hasn’t been a flurry of signings in the first hours of free agency.
Here is what has happened since 11 o’clock Thursday night. Also, stay tuned later today I’ll tell you why Chiefs guard Brian Waters flunked his first test with the new regime at Arrowhead.
REDSKINS SIGN HAYNESWORTH AND HALL – After sitting out last year’s free agent market, Washington owner Dan Snyder leaped back in and signed DT Albert Haynesworth to a $100 million deal and CB DeAngelo Hall to a $56 million deal. Here’s the shocking number: Haynesworth is going to get $41 million guaranteed, a level no NFL player has ever reached.
PATRIOTS ACTIVE AS WELL – In New England, they have signed RB Fred Taylor, released several weeks ago by Jacksonville and they also inked former Jets TE Chris Baker.
JETS ADDING LINEBACKER – New head coach Rex Ryan and the New York management have apparently worked out a deal with Ravens LB Bart Scott that will pay something in the neighborhood of $8 million per season. The Jets have also re-signed former Chiefs FB Tony Richardson to a one-year deal.
HOUSTON KEEPS SAFETY — Eugene Wilson stayed with the Texans, signing a three-year deal, worth more than $11 million.

Flunked his first test? Did he not want to move to center? Not that this was going to happen, just wondering what his problem is, hes a chief, will be for the next few years, this team doesnt have another guy to lead…
I also heard that KC was in on Haynesworth and was one of the 4 teams interesting heavily….is this true?
Also, with people flying off the market in the coming days, where is KC going to spend their money? Dont they have to spend in the 35 range to hit 87 percent?
Wow, ok, I read the article, went to BoBGretz.com before I went to any Chiefs news sites…
Waters…great player when surrounded by Roaf/Tait, and is now a very good player with a few years left…
I dont really care if players complain about Haley I think its a good thing, he needs to be tough…
Honestly, Id go sign Chris K(Guard from Steelers), and would not lose any sleep.
I had a lot of respect for him, but this is just really low…
I still believe LJ needs to go…as for Waters, I dont see a market for a 32 year old guard.. I just dont.
Bob where do you see this heading? In terms of Brian Waters future in KC.
Was reading also where Denver is signing Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington.
Yeah…I’m interested to see what Bob has to say on the Waters deal.
I don’t mean any disrespect but don’t expect to be blown away by some big revelation being posted here about waters. I said 2 months ago that they should shop waters or move him to center.
The question is did the Chiefs hire a couple of assholes that are to far outta touch with players? Or did they hire two guys that are just getting there feet wet and are trying to set a tone, and waters just happened to be where they drew the line? Or could it be a little of both the above mentioned, with some things we aren’t aware of mixed in.
Only time will tell.
John,
I’m just saying that I’ll be a lot more interested in what Bob has to say…which I’ll take as the truth of the matter.
Whitlock? Never can tell. He can be entertaining…full of sh*t…right on…or a mile off base. And usually, all within the same article.
I think bottom line is…there’s a new approach with “the brass”. The players will just have to deal with it. And so will we. Like you said…only time will tell.
Haley’s comment about pulling “22 people off the streets” and winning 2 games is hilarious! I mean it, that just keeps popping up in my mind and gets me chuckling! I like Todd Haley!
I worked nights when Parcells was coaching the NY Jets and never missed a Tuesday press conference on the now defunct CNN/SI. Talk about entertainment! In this comment, Haley kind of reminds me of those days…
Maybe Brian Waters needs a little humility. Maybe all the folks, who are coming back, do. Herm blew a lot of sunshine about how great and young they were. Well, they (the team) were not all that. The players (and staff) are really going to have to their pride and any selfishness aside… and get to work.
I have to believe that Waters was the source that twitloch is quoting.
I have no doubt that Pioli is an arrogant person, i got that sense just listening to him talk, (maybe I’m to sensitive but, I’m a little sick of hearing “The patriot Way”) The Chiefs have been around for along time too, granted they haven’t had the success we’d all hoped, but sometime I get the feeling Pioli thinks that he’s a bit above. But that’s ok so long as he produces. I just hope he’s not the type that has absolutely no loyalty to players.
One thing I’m certain of, no man is infallible.
From what I’ve heard and read Pioli, in the past, was reachable to his players. I think it was a Monte Beisel comment one time that Piloi would be right there with the players working out.
Lets just hope he’s not as arrogant as “the King” was, causing Jarrad Allen to jump ship and countless draft picks to sign late. I’m ok with some “I know what I’m doing, just stay out of my way” attitude as long as he can back it up.
Well, I for one have never heard anything bad said about Brian Waters, he played great last year on a 2-14 team with no one else on his level of ability, except maybe alberts who was a rookie. It showed since he made the pro-bowl again, anyway, I hope that the chiefs can pull together a line that is better then last years, I think it will be a bit tougher without waters.
By the way there is always a market for a 32 year old established guard in the NFL, some team would/will happily take Waters off the chiefs hands.
Let’s face it…you have to have an amount of arrogance to do that kind of job.
I don’t like that “Patriot way” crap much either. Mainly because I can’t stand the Patriots. But, they’ve built a successful franchise there. They’ve won Super Bowls…and are in the “hunt” pretty much every year. I’m hoping that some years down the road, people will be talking about “the Chiefs way” to build a succesful franchise.
Yea that would be nice, but Im not really so sure about whether or not Pioli had as much to do about the patriots way as much Belichick did. He is the man there and still is the man there. They have signed Fred Taylor, most likely was Belichicks idea, why? Because he is the one who can get the production out of the players that seemed to be washed up, not so sure about Paoli yet.
I thought the chiefs had 22 guys off the streets last year playing by the way… LOL, close to it. Haley i hope can back up his arrogance with some productive running this year, I would hate to see the second showing of the high flying circus (vermiel brought it the first time around) without a running game…
The Browns dumped Winslow on the Bucs for an “undisclosed draft pick”. Sounds like they were dropping problem players.
I guess a problem player is someone who discloses to his teammates that he had a staph infection, thats just terrible.. Well I think he’ll be able to do better down there anyway..
Well…
It was draft picks. With an S. The Browns only had four picks in the upcoming draft. So I can see where they were coming from. They have a lot of holes to fill. Plus, they drafted MU’s Martin Rucker last year. And Winslow hasn’t exactly been one of those players that you can count on to be in the line-up every week.
Ck this out!

Chiefs, Patriots nearing trade for Vrabel
Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Kansas City Chiefs, Mike Vrabel, New England Patriots
New England’s Pro Bowl linebacker Mike Vrabel is in Kansas City undergoing a physical so that he can then be traded to the Chiefs. General Manager Scott Pioli is reaching out to bring in a player familiar with his system, and New England is a willing trade partner.
“
No, a problem player is one that is self orientated, makes dumb decisions like riding motorcycles and blowing out his knee when his team is counting on him and doesn’t have a team first mentality. I wouldn’t want him in KC. I’d MUCH rather have Gonzo or Gates before him!
Maybe LJ will be part of the trade. Here’s hoping.
I hope it’s not draft picks, anyone else just a little uncomfortable with Pioli making trades with the Pats?
I’m not going to lie to you John, I’m not real excited about picking up the Pats leftovers. ESPECIALLY not by giving up any kind of draft pick in the process.
Slightly reminiscent of Greg Robinson coming here and snatching up all of the Donkey’s used up LBers.
I’ve been pretty excited about Pioli up to now, and who knows, it could be a great pick up, but I can’t say I see the silver lining at this point.
I doubt this includes LJ. The Pats just inked Fred Taylor so I don’t see him going there
Mike Vrabel is old. trading for him is not what I had in mind. Hopefully it is a conditional pick that is late 2nd day.
810 is reporting that it was for undisclosed draft pick.
KC needs to look into Derrick Brooks. MLB maybe? Hell, they’re already picking up old LBs that they have to make compensation to another team for. This dude is there for the signing!
Maybe we can pick up Rodney Harrison for an undisclosed draft pick from next year too!! I’m SURE he’ll have something left in the tank!!
TrINT Green is out there available too!!
I agree with find, vrabel is pretty much the same as Lewis, kinda old.
Vrabel will be the Teacher for Curry that we will draft with the #3 pick in the Draft.
Who else do we have to teach our soon to be Greats LB in the Game?
D.Edwards is gone and none of the others know enough to teach anything, Vrabel will just be a vet leader and not a every down player.
I wouldn’t mind KC picking up Jonathan Vilma from the Saints.
So…who is it that we have right now that is BETTER than Vrabel?
Nobody.
And I have a feeling that Curry is not going to be there at #3. I know the Rams need O-line…but they need D just as much. I think they’ll take Curry.
It’s not a sexy pick up by any means, but i think its a smart move. I think we will get Curry in the draft, and a veteran LB is good leadership for a young team. If we get Curry at #3, that will give us 4 number 1 draft picks on the defense (D. Johnson, Hali, Dorsey, and hopefully Curry). Better get the most out of their talent before they become a bust. I wouldnt worry too much about Pioli making his first move with the pats, he had a hand in making them the model franchise that they are today. Have a little faith Chief fans, good time will be here once again! Anyone know for sure who our D-coordinator is? GO CHIEFS!!!
What are we starting a retirement home in KC ? Yes this was the way the Pats started . I can only hope that its not a long term contract 2yrs at best. To me draft picks for 30 something picks is not the answer . Didn’t CP already try this ?
I like the pickup of Vrabel. He’s not really that old for a linebacker. He’ll probably cost us no more than a 6th or 7th round pick. He’ll provide some valuable leadership that the Chiefs need on defense. He made the Pro Bowl as recently as 2007 with 12.5 sacks. Also, it sure looks like we are going to a 3-4 defense.I’m not saying he’ll be a Pro Bowler here, but he can certainly help.
If we got him for a 6th or 7th thats ok but I bet he came ata higher price than that.
Well this is a move I didn’t want to see happen, I thought we were on the right track when we went draft heavy and picked players to start. If He (pioli) is going to start this retread business all over again I would have rather watched herm’s draftees start… Vrabel is a system player, just like Ty Law, Deion Branch, Asante samuel anybody catching on to what im saying. Hopefully the system starts early or Vrabel could look bad!! Sorta like Kendrell Bell when he left the steelers or Shawn Barber for that matter!!
This trade is a horrible move. Pioli and Haley are not impressing anyone to this point.
