Free Agency Update 2/28

Many pundits and league executives predicted the current economic crisis in the country would slow down the normal pace of signings in the first days of free agency.  That wasn’t the case on Friday, but things sure did slow down on Saturday.

Here’s a late Saturday night update on the signings and movement during the second 24 hours of the ’09 NFL season:

The  Broncos finally got a signature on a contract with long-time Eagles safety Brian Dawkins.  It’s a five-year deal for $17 m illion, with $7.2 million guaranteed.  It really works out to a two-year deal for $9 million.  Denver also signed DT Darrel Reid (Indianapolis) to a three-year, $6.8 million contract.  And, reportedly they’ve also  signed LB Andra Davis (Cleveland).

Following after the early fast pace set by the Redskins, their NFC East mates got busy themselves.  The Eagles inked OT Stacy Andrews (Cincinnati) to a six-year deal.  The Giants signed a pair of defensive players: LB Michael Boley (Atlanta) and DT Rocky Bernard (Seattle).  The Cowboys signed LB Keith Brookings, who was released earlier in the day by Atlanta.  Dallas also made a trade, sending CB Anthony Henry to Detroit for QB Jon Kitna.

Other moves:

BILLS — signed C/G Geoff  Hangartner (Carolina).

BUCCANEERS — re-signed S Will Allen and WR Michael Clayton.

49ERS – signed WR Brandon Jones (Tennessee) to a five-year, $16.5 million with $5.4 million guaranteed.

LIONS – signed WR Bryant  Johnson (San Francisco) to a three-year, $9 million contract.

SAINTS – re-signed OT Jon Stinchcomb.

TEXANS — signed DE Antonio Smith (Arizona) to a five-year deal for $35.5 million, with $12.5 million guaranteed.

JUST HEARD A NEWS CLIP THAT CHIEFS PERSONALL DEPT IS LOOKING AT CONVERTING RUDY NISWANGER TO NT IN A DEFENSIVE 3-4, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE AT ALL?

The more I think about Denver Cutler-Cassel trade . It would have made since on 2 fronts 1 McDaniel’s familiar with Cassel. 2 to keep the chiefs from getting Cassel or costing us more in the trade .

I just heard the same thing about Rudy to NT-that would have us needing a new center if that goes through. I do not know much about NT-what makes Rudy a good candidate for filling that role besides him being super intelligent? haha

And I was worried that your article about the first days of free agency would lead to us not picking up anyone!! Nice job on making everyone look the other way Bob! You’re like one of those scantily clad women who work for magicians!

Denver is sure making some moves. It’s pretty quiet out in SD and Oakland.

I think Rudy has similar size as prospective NT’s…don’t know too much about the position

Tom Barnt was a converted OL to DT during Marty’s days. He was effective, but not stellar. Who really knows?

i am sure the guys sitting at that poker table have a plan.

The new way is here……………… the Chief’s way.
    GO CHIEFS !!! THE RIGHT 53 2009

    eyePod,
It’s sure nice to have the Chiefs finally participating in the NFL again but I don’t know about a scantily clad Bob. Bob, can you give us your take on how this changes the draft? It’s another good day to be a part of Chiefs Nation.

Ask your selves this, if Niswanger couldn’t handle the middle on offense, how can he play NT and take on dbl teams almost every snap? He done ok pass blocking, but his short yardage game was weak fellas.
    Good luck with that.
    I don’t see it.
    But that’s just me,

Have always felt Niswanger was too tall to be center. It was part of Thigpen’s problem that he could see the field. Really thought Rudy would be better suited at guard or tackle. NT? Who knows. With Matt Birk and Jason Brown available at center, that would be a tremendous upgrade if they could be signed by the Chiefs.

I guess with Detroit trading Kitna, they have decided to draft a QB at #1 instead of Curry. Unless they plan to sign an older QB to fill the gap for a couple of years. Garcia?

Hey B, Welcome back man! Haven’t read from you lately.

Unfortunately Brown is off the market. He or Scott were about the only two big name FA I wanted to see the Chiefs try to sign.

  • March 1, 2009  - Niblick says:

I just dont’ see Rudy as a nose tackle. Aren’t they usually about 325 lbs. & up and also not really tall? I think he could be converted to guard but nose tackle seems like a reach. I’m certainly no expert on nose tackles, so perhaps he ould play.

Missed the Brown signing with Rams. Too bad. Oh well, I have faith in the shrewdness of Pioli. He is like the guy who invented the paper clip…”why didn’t I think of that?”

Have been keeping up John, but had a lot of problems getting anything to post here after Bob had some system updates. This moring it magically worked!
