Favre Mania Fizzles

From Minneapolis, Minnesota

A pack of television cameramen and photographers had their backs to the playing field inside the Metrodome at 6 p.m. Their attention was not on the few players from the Chiefs and Vikings warming up on the field.

They were looking for No. 4, and we don’t mean Tyler Thigpen.

At 6:20 p.m., Brett Favre ran out of the southeast tunnel in the Dome and into the lives of the purple clad fans of the Minnesota Vikings. The cheer barely caused a ripple because the stadium was only about 20 percent full at that point. The guys with the horns are thrilled that Favre is wearing purple, but not excited enough to show up early to see him run onto the field.

They eventually made their way into the Hump and while every seat was not filled, it was a pretty big crowd for a pre-season game against a team that finished last season 2-14.

The Chiefs won the toss, spoiling the Hollywood element, so the Vikings offense had to wait its turn. That came when RB Jamaal Charles fumbled and the Minnesota defense recovered.

With the game clock at 12 minutes, 6 seconds to play in the first quarter and during a television timeout, Favre ran on the field and the crowd erupted. Referee Ron Winter shook Favre’s hand as the quarterback ran past into the Packers, Jets, Vikings huddle.

The first play of the Favre era was an obvious one – he handed off to RB Adrian Peterson. That gained four yards off the right side. On 2nd-and-6, Favre threw his first pass. But he was hit as he threw by OLB Tamba Hali and the ball fluttered in complete. On 3rd-and-6, Favre threw a low laser that rookie WR Percy Harvin grabbed for five yards.

Favre’s first series with the Vikings ended when Chiefs FS Jarrad Page came up and stuffed Peterson on a 4th-and-1 run for a loss of one yard and Kansas City had the ball.

The Chiefs produced a Ryan Succop 32-yard FG on that possession, and Favre came back out for a second series with the Vikings offense. Peterson gained six yards on first down, Favre threw behind WR Jaymar Johnson and on 3rd-and-4, Minnesota was called for a false start.

On the 3rd-and-9 play, Chiefs defensive coordinator sent the blitz, as seven men rushed Favre. LB Corey Smith got their first and buried Favre as he threw the ball and the pass fluttered incomplete.

That was it for Favre. When Tarvaris Jackson came out for the next Vikings offensive series, the crowd booed, but Favre had a baseball cap on and he was on the bench chatting with Jared Allen, who did not dress for the game because of an ankle/foot injury suffered earlier in the week in practice.

So Favre’s night was done. He was one of four for four yards passing. In two possessions, he led the Vikings to 14 yards on seven plays. Favre took at least two big hits from the Chiefs defense.

Favre’s big night in the Twin Cities was no explosion. It was a fuse that never got lit.

No B. Flowers pick six? I’m disappointed.

7 man blitz is definetly not playing “vanilla” defense. After sacking Brett it seemed that the Viking D tried to get some payback on Cassel.

So far Tavaris Jackson looks better than Favre, but that will happen when Favre has only had 2 days practice with his wrs. That is his own fault.

    Go Chiefs!

Over 1,000 posts at AP since the game started. Checked FoxSports coverage, too. Only negative comments I saw ANYWHERE on Cassel’s performance tonight is right here…by one person. Guess he knows something the rest of us don’t???

Favre? Phfttt! I guess the Vikes “brass” better hope his play improves. Tavaris Jackson is making him look bad. I mean…how freakin’ funny would it be to see Favre end his career on the bench, outplayed?

And as I type that…Jackson throws a friggin’ STRIKE for a TD.

Some team is gonna get lucky with T- Jax. Too bad for the Vikes they were too stupid to se what they had, and go out and beg the over the hill circus clown to come in.
Good to see Bowe and Darling, our starting WR’s look good. Gotta see Bradely and Lelie in there also. Hopefully it’ll mean they cut the old guys Engram and Toomer.
Jake O’Connel may wind up beating out both Ryan and Cottam and steal the starting TE job. When Pioli traded up in the 7th round to get him, we knew there was something there.

Cassell looked very sharp tonite. So did Bowe and LJ. Like what I saw from the team tonite. The o-line need to be more consistent but so far not bad. IF starters played the whole game for sure win. Farve looked awful.

    Highlights Tonight:

    - Brodie Croyle staked his claim to the Chiefs starting QB spot, WR Dwyane Bowe turned a poor throw by mutt ca$$el into a TD and too, K Ryan ‘continues not to be a’ Succop when he kicks looked good. GRADE: A

    Took a step Backwards/Needs Work:

    - mutt ca$$el yet once more failed to distinguish himself: another fumble, another 3 QB sacks taken (actually a 4th waved off by penalty), and these serve to affirm his lack of mobility. GRADE: E (effort)

    ‘Q’ Lawrence…turn in your playbook. GRADE: F

    OVERALL CHIEFS GRADE: C-/D

The new regime  & :shcok: still winless… 0-2 on the 2009 season…

I come to this site for Chiefs news. If I wanted excessive coverage on Brett Favre’s 1-4 for 4 yards night I would watch ESPN for the next week and a half.

  • August 21, 2009  - steve says:

Improvement see by all, except RTT0w. All he saw was the tail of the dog next to him as he checked scent.

    D. Mac might have won his spot back, either way it is a weakness in a weak line.

Lots of comp for back up Quarterback, but Matt has quieted fears of some, not all , will be a fun rebuilding year. Not a lot of victories but a lot of growth.

  • August 21, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

The rose-colored glasses wearing Chiefs fandom: “The preseason doesn’t Mutter- er, matter.”

 ‘check’ – “These guys have to learn to win now – the preseason is when you start with that.”

BRODIE CROYLE #1 CHIEFS STARTING QB! mutt ca$$el takes a seat end o the bench…

    heh heh heh!!!

  • August 21, 2009  - steve says:

If anybody lets RTTw gets to them, just picture him as he is. Having a strong resemblence to Ernest T. Bass, remember him bothering Sheriff Taylor, living in his mom’s basement. He is either Haley’s wife garnering support for her husband by making outlandish comments, or just nuts. Either way it is fun to read, but don’t take it to heart.

  • August 21, 2009  - ED says:

Rin get over it Edwards gone and Croyle will not be the starter for the Chiefs. Just face it cuz. If you don’t support the Chiefs anymore then jump off the wagon. U sound more like a Herm fan than a Chief fan. So if thats the case go cheer that Herm calls good highlights on ESPN. But come one with the bashing of the Chiefs. If you don’t like the direction of the new Chiefs just find you another team.

  • August 22, 2009  - Hank says:

Cassel looked good even under extreme pressure at times. Nice slant to Bowe for the td.

Croyle hasn’t improved in one crucial area. He’s got to learn how to throw a short pass. He blew it on a couple of screens that would have been for positive yards. I think Croyle may be the odd man out when the dust settles.

    I thought Gutierrez looked good.

  • August 22, 2009  - Mutt$ki says:

I really stunk it up again out there last night. Sorry. I apologize for my mediocrity. Brodie is better than me and should be the starter.

I’m going back home now to the East and find that guy wearing the hoodie. I miss him and Randy, and Wes, and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

  • August 22, 2009  - CK says:

I’m going to try one more time because I have a lot of respect for Bob Gretz, and I appreciate his efforts for DT.
FOR GOD SAKES, STOP RESPONDING TO RINT-TOOT-TURD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In fact the best thing would be to stop posting at all until Bob decides it’s important enough to block R-T-Turd’s IP address from this site.
This R-T-Turd is obviously not a Chiefs fan, he is messing with this site and you all are accommodating his perverted sense of self worth.
    FOR BOB’S SAKE STOP IT!!!!!

Now when he fake posts me…I won’t respond.
I am 100% behind Pioli/Haley and THE Kansas City Chiefs! I can’t wait to sit in our 40 yd line season tickets and watch our new regime rebuild our beloved team.

  • August 23, 2009  - Daniel H says:

Not sure he’s laughing but yes Rin, Herm probably does have a grin on his face from ear to ear. He may be thinking `I told you so`. You are so right when you say it wasn’t the coaches in 2008 it was the players.

Again this year it seems to be the case though like you I have not been especially impressed with Haley or Pioli either. Same mistakes different coaches.
