DEFENSE: Some Very Ugly Numbers
From Baltimore, Maryland
Live by the blitz. Die by the blitz.
The Chiefs were football dead on Sunday against the Ravens because to put any type of pressure on Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco, they had to blitz. There front five – the defensive line and outside linebackers – got to the passer one time in 44 passing plays.
Defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast had to dial up extra rushers. The ability of Flacco’s protection unit to pick up the blitz led to the winning touchdown, a 31-yard pass from the quarterback to WR Mark Clayton.
On the play, the Chiefs sent both of their safeties on the blitz. They went after Flacco with seven guys.
And the Ravens knew what was coming.
“We just had the post on and coach made a great call,” Clayton said of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. “That was the perfect call and we caught the defense in the perfect coverage and we were able to execute the throw and catch.
“Cam is very smart and at that moment he told us it was coming and it was going to happen. Sure enough, there was the defense and there was the middle wide open. There was the ball and there was the touchdown.”
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley gave credit where credit was due.
“It appeared to me that they blocked it up,” said Haley. “It didn’t appear we got anybody free. We were one-on-one corner and receiver and the quarterback made a great throw obviously the receiver made a play and we’ve got to make a better play on defense.”
CB Brandon Carr was beaten on the play, but SS Mike Brown knows it’s an almost impossible situation.
“When we don’t get to the passer, there’s no way those guys (cornerbacks) can cover for that long,” said Brown. “Everybody sees the corner, but the problem for us was at the line of scrimmage and not being able to crack their protection.”
It was an ugly day for the Chiefs defense. They gave up 501 yards of offense. Last year when the defense finished 31 out of 32 teams in yards allowed over the entire season, the most yardage they gave up in a game was 455 yards to Tennessee.
That number wouldn’t have been so bad if it was a bend but don’t break game. But they did break, giving up five touchdowns with four of those coming on drives of 13, 11, nine and eight plays. Baltimore had a huge edge in time of possession, 39 minutes, 49 seconds compared to 20 minutes, 11 seconds for the Chiefs.
Maybe the defense didn’t so much break as they were exhausted.
“I think that was evident,” said Haley. “I’m not making an excuse for them, that’s why we run and that’s why we condition, because to have a chance we’ve got to be a well-conditioned team and be able to play as long as it takes to win. I don’t want that to sound like an excuse.
“The time of possession was very lopsided … I would say that we probably got worn out.”
Baltimore ran 85 plays in the game, compared to 44 by the Chiefs. They had 11 possessions and only two of those went for three plays and out. The Ravens converted 10 of 17 third down plays.
Flacco was 26 of 43 for 307 yards and three TD passes. RB Ray Rice ran 19 times for 108 yards. Ravens receivers averaged 11.8 yards per catch.
“They came out and they were a throwing machine today,” said Haley. “They probably threw the ball a lot more than we anticipated, but we’ve got to stop the pass too.”

“It was an ugly day for the Chiefs defense. They gave up 501 yards of offense.”
- embarrassing – ‘check’ should be ashamed of himself…
“Last year when the defense finished 31 out of 32 teams in yards allowed over the entire season, the most yardage they gave up in a game was 455 yards to Tennessee.”
- OH-MY-GAWD…THEY STUNK WORSE TODAY IN THEIR FIRST GAME THAN THEY ever DID IN 2008? AND THEY STILL HAVE 15 MORE CHANCES TO STINK- er, SHINE- er, STINK? Do we smell a 32nd NFL team defense ranking by the end of 2009? I think we do!
“Live by the blitz. Die by the blitz.”
- live by the swelled head
s and die by the too small a level testosterone “any 22″…
Ain’t got the horses…

Also in addition to 501 yards of offense the BALT Ravens got the ungodly number of 32 first downs – 32 – that is a horrible defensive showing.

Was that Clancy Pendergast or Teddy Pendergrass who was coordinating the D?

I thought
and
were the best GM & HC candidates in the NFL…in reality, there couldn’t possibly be any worse!
Cue paraphrase of former BUFF LB Isiah Robertso, with final crescendo courtesy Homer Simpson -
“I got a feelin Kansas City’s going winless don’t you know – they’ll be 0 & 16 and come end of ‘09 will be two firings DOH!â€
heh heh heh
II. Defense was tired in the 1st and 2nd half for three reasons: 1. Multiple short offensive series to start game. 2. Blocked punt for TD gave defense NO rest time between Balt offensive series and… 3. Interception and quick score put defense back on the field QUICK.
III. Defensive pressure needs to be better and our best CB (Flowers) was out and they picked on Legget ALL 1st half.
Of course Baltimore will have more offensive yards and Chiefs more allowed more defensive yards allowed. Baltimore had TWO more offensive series than KC and KC scored 14 points with 7 yards of offense.
Bottom line is that the Offense and the Defense (especially Legget) got BETTER against a team known for finishing a team off they could NOT stop us from getting better.
I fear you are correct Rin. This season looks just like 2008 all over again only worse.
How about an offensive line? I am glad that Haley identified a problem on the offensive line, and actually took some measures to improve the worst O-line in history, I guess I can’t ask for perfect but my question is why in H E double hockey sticks has no one done crap about this before 1 week and four days before kickoff?
I don’t care what happens next year, we need an O-line. I don’t care how good the D is, if they have to play ALL day long they will give up the yards. Perdiod
