Chiefs Will Chat With RG3 Friday Night

From Indianapolis, Indiana

Every evening the 325+ players that are in town for the NFL Scouting Combine have meetings with individual NFL teams. It’s all part of that “getting to know you” process that goes into preparation for the NFL Draft.

On Friday night, the Chiefs will sit down with one of the biggest names in this year’s draft class, Heisman Trophy Winner/Baylor QB Robert Griffin III.

RG3 as he’s become known spilled the beans during his meeting with the media horde Friday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium. Griffin deftly handled his press conference and during the session let slip that he was meeting that night with the Chiefs and Cleveland Browns.

GM Scott Pioli acknowledged the meeting was scheduled during his 10 minutes of media time, and he didn’t even seem ticked off that Griffin had let the combine cat out of the bag.

“There are a lot of players that we are talking too,” said Pioli, who then laughed when he was asked if he was considering a first-round trade-up to draft Griffin.

“We will be talking to a number of players. You do your homework. You never know what’s going to happen with a player. After this morning, we are No. 11, but we don’t know where we’re going to be (in April). Right now there are 10 teams in front of us throwing out all kinds of smoke screens about what they are going to do.

You never know.”

I think Scott needs offer up Bowe and 1st rd pick for RG3 maybe even throw in a 3rd pick what do u guys think? Dey need wideout so that will solve one of Rams issues

I would give my left nut if the Chiefs would figure out a way to get RG3. Hell I’d even throw in Palko and Stanzi to sweeten the deal.

I love the idea of Manning in a Chiefs jersey, but it is true that he is not the loong term answer at QB.

I love the idea of Manning in a Chiefs jersey, but it is true that he is not the loong term answer at QB. Manning would only cost the Chiefs money. RG III will cost alot of draft picks and possibly a player or two.

I’d give Chuck’s left nut and both of Cassel’s to have the Chief’s move up for Griffin. I just pray that he doesn’t wind up being another Turd Blackledge, who connected for an astounding 26 TD passes in three years on the cursed Astroturf of Arrowhead.

    A very looong term answer….

I doubt it RG3 if he goes to a good organization will be a star in this league. Like I said 1st 3rd & Dwayne Bowe should be good enough to get RG3. Having Bowe thrown in the deal is like getting 1st rd pick. First off Bowe is a #1 receiver proven commodity in this league so its like giving them 1st rd pick in saying that. So they could get 11th pick, #1 receiver and 3rd round pick. I say we should try it. We get RG3 with Baldwin and Breaston add few more good tight ends in free agency to go with Moeaki I think we will still have a darn good team. Question is will Pioli be willing to move Bowe for RG3 and will Rams take the bait. It would make good sense for both teams. Rams get #1 receiver to pair with Sam Bradford and benefit of still having 11th Pick in the draft to maybe get left tackle. Along with extra 3rd round pick to maybe use on another need they may have like center or guard.

We would get franchise QB that could elevate the play of guy like Baldwin and Breaston. Have Cassel still here as veteran to compete for starting job or all else be good backup. To me this only way I see a scenerio where Chiefs could trade into that pick. Browns have 2 1st rd picks and Redskins would have trade the farm to get this guy since they dont have 2 1st rd picks. So to me I would love to see us make this move. We franchise Bowe then trade him to St Louis they’re under cap to so they can still offer him long term contract.

And Rams ought to look at it this way Blackmon or DBowe proven guy vs unknown. Then you still get 11th pick get left tackle

  • February 24, 2012  - Petey says:

Explain to me how exactly we offer a free agent like D. Bowe for anyone?

Even if you COULD offer Bowe, it’s not a better offer than Cleveland giving up two number ones this year.

  • February 24, 2012  - Michael says:

Sure, the Chiefs could offer up their 1st, Bowe and a 3rd to move up to get RGIII, but that wouldn’t be nearly enough. A third round pick, a lower first round pick by 9 slots and a very good veteran receiver that will cost about $10 Mil a year instead of much less expensive rookie? The Rams might take that if no other team made a reasonable offer.

  • February 25, 2012  - Mark Blue says:

The bidding STARTS at 2 #1′s and 2 #2′s. I’d throw in Dorsey to seal the deal. The Chiefs can do it because they have the equivalent of 3 high draft choices coming back this year in Jamaal, Berry, and Moeaki, and Bailey looks liker he may be ready to start at Dorsey’s spot. I hope Pioli sees it that way.

While RGIII would be great to have itnwill cost the Chiefs dearly. 2 firsts amd 2 seconds and probably a third. The Rams or Browms wont take any players for the pick. Look at the history of the draft. Has any team that moved up used a player to sweeten tje deal? The answer is no. The Chiefs have needs that need to be addressed. If some of those needs are taken care of in free agency then go for it but Cheap Skate Clark has a history of keeping his wallet closed. If they trade upnto get RGIII and those needs arent addressed in free agency than it sets the Chiefs back. We need a rt/lft tackle and nose guard and a defensive end to replace the useless Tyson Jackson. Super Bowls are won in the trenches. Ideally if the boys on Arrowhead drive can sign Manning that would put us over the top. Ricky Stanzi has the potential to be great. Lets not forget he didnt get a real training camp to improve since Horrible Haley thought the Chiefs needed to run then improve the game plan. Imagine having one of the best QB’s to ever walk on a football field teach a young bright QB how to play the game. Stanzi would get 3 years to learn, thats anout how much Manning would have left. Then the Chiefs could use the draft to improve the team. RGIII is am unproven commodity. We are not rebuilding. We are a legit QB away from being a super bowl contender. Matt Cassel WILL NOT take us to the promised land. You can see from last year that he was horrible with out Charlie Wies. Kyle Orton came in with the same personel and looked loads better than Cassel. What it all boils down to is will Clark Hunt open the check book , like his dad used to , and bring in free agents that can help the team and will Pioli draft at minimum 5 quality players in this uears draft? If they can accomplish this and Manning comes here will will be the favorites to win the AFC.

  • February 25, 2012  - RW says:

Realistically, the Chiefs have little to NO chance of acquiring RG3 so why waste time interviewing him when there are dozens of other players/positions needing additional scrutiny? Pioli is like the fat bald guy (which he is) going to a dance and pestering the prettiest girl to take a turn on the floor to only impress others.

GMs intent on massaging their own ego are losers and it matters not what type of business you care to name. Back to the main issue. Cleveland has the need and necessary ammo to blow everyone out of the water in order to draft RG3 and I think most everyone, including the Rams knows it, so why is Pioli sniffing around as if actually has a plan in mind? He doesn’t. It’s all ego for Pioli.

  • February 25, 2012  - el cid says:

I am with RW. At least Pioli could massage his image with fans, not a bad thing.

Guys, management ran Palko in here for 2 years to be competition for Cassel, how did that work out when Cassel went down. Cassel is the man for Pioli, get over it.

National media think the major shortcoming with the Chiefs is QB so everyone is right, there is a need. But sitting there as road block is Pioli and I doubt he is going anywhere anytime soon. Cannot have it both ways, Pioli is great, you get Cassel as your QB, Pioli is a bum, you get Cassel as QB.

  • February 25, 2012  - Petey says:

Still want to hear from edj how precisely we are going to trade Bowe? I’ve seen this all over one of the other sites and I’m still baffled on how we plan to trade a free agent?

  • February 26, 2012  - ED J says:

There is this thing called franchise tag which would allow us to trade Bowe much like Pats traded Cassel to us when they put franchise tag on him. Come on dude you Chiefs fan. Bowe would give them legit young #1 receiver they have cap space to give him long term deal. Along with 11 pick they could use on left tackle. We could throw in 2nd or 3rd pick. But yea petey thats how we can do it

  • February 26, 2012  - ED J says:

Then another thing i cant get over is how everyone saying Cleveland deal is far better than what i suggested jus because its (2) 1st rd picks. Cle offer 4th pick and 22nd pick how is that better. For one is anyone on here gone there say Justin Blackmon better receiver than Dwayne Bowe I mean really because thats who Rams projected to draft if they trade with Cleveland. Then how is 22nd pick better than aquiring 11th pick in the draft. To those who think Pioli trying stroke his ego why??? He has won 3 rings so he has no need for that. I seriously think he is considering getting RG3 if he cant get Manning during free agency period. I think all Pioli bashing kind of silly seeing all this guy has done is build one of best defenses in the league after our defense being one of the worst for almost decade under Vermeil yrs and backend of Herm yrs. Then he has assembled preety good offense short Qb. So i think he understands outside few more olinemen he is good Qb away from having Super Bowl contender

  • February 26, 2012  - eric justice says:

If you sign RGIII edj you arent going to the super bowl next year. Maybe in 2014 but if you move up you dont address needs on both lines. Why would cleveland want tonspend big money on a Wide Receiver who isnt as good as Fitzgerald or Andrea Johnson. Bowe wants that kind of money. He has had 1 outstanding year but the rest were just average. They are gambling that he would step up to the Firzgerald and Johnson area. If you draft Blackmon you doing the same gamble at a lot lower price tag. I understand what you want its just not realistic. If your going to get RGIII it wil cost 2 1′s and probably 2 2′s. They wont want any vets who will make big money. Cleveland has te same problem we have , no qb. It would be best for the Chiefs to sign Manning and hope he can teach Stanzi how to be an elite qb. RGIII would look great with the arrowhead on the side of his helmet but it would cost to much for the Chiefs to get him and all this is provided the Colts dont fall in love with him. Manning makes the most sense. He is proven and he his a winner. RGIII maybe another Manning but he could also be another Ryan Leaf, you just dont know. If you take that gamble you hope hes another Manning but if he flops it sets you back 5 years and by that time you are looking for a new rb and outside linebacker because yours will be old. I think RGIII wil be great i just cant guarrente that and with as close as we are its to much of a risk to move up to get him.

  • February 26, 2012  - ED J says:

What are you talking about the trade im saying is with Rams not the Browns. Are you reading what im saying or just itching to make your point it seems like the ladder. Either way Bowe is proven # 1 receiver eqivalent to getting 1st rd.pick. his value is as good as trading for Calvin Johnson. Matter fact his numbers and Megatron number preety close. And what time capsule are you in. Last 4 yrs rookie Qbs have been leading their teams to the playoffs. SancheZ took Jets Afc championship game his rookie yr. Matt Ryan got playoffs rookie yr. So did Andy Dalton last yr. If Cam Newton wasnt on such bad team in Carolina he wld made it. So you can get playoffs with rookie Qb and not only that you can win. So your argument about rookie Qbs isnt valid based on recent history. With all rule changes rookie Qbs coming in having success why do you think Manning is expendable

  • February 26, 2012  - Petey says:

You are correct ed that there is something called the franchise tag, which I am familiar with. You DO realize that in order to trade someone w/ the franchise tag that they have to SIGN it correct?

I appreciate the attempted lesson, but Bowe would have to SIGN the franchise agreement BEFORE he can be traded. Now, that’s not saying that he couldn’t or wouldn’t sign it before the draft, but I envision, as with a lot of the players who are franchised that he will take it into training camp so he can get out of some two-a-days (TonyG and WillS. both did this)

  • February 26, 2012  - ED J says:

Player doesnt have to sign franchise tag Petey im glad to educate u on that also its just placed on him. That is why so many players dont like the tag because its cheap way out of giving them long term deal. Players dont have choice because itd something the team can just do and player has no control over it.

  • February 26, 2012  - ED J says:

This why in new CBA most players were against using the tag more than once on same player. However they didnt get that put into new CBA. But to correct you its nothing player has to sign if team place the tag on a player they are automatically back under 1yr deal getting paid average salary of the top players at that particilar player position

  • February 26, 2012  - Petey says:

You’re wrong ed, player DOES have to sign it…they don’t have a choice if they can play anywhere else, but the absolutely, 100% have to sign it unless the team recinds the tag. The players don’t like the tag because it’s only a 1 year guarantee. Please explain to me how Tony G and Will S. came to camp late and didn’t show up until AFTER they signed their tenders?

We can not trade Bowe unless he SIGNS his franchise tender contract, otherwise we can not do it.

  • February 26, 2012  - Petey says:

Please read the following article if you want to continue to argue whether or not a franchised player must sign his franchise tender contract: http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article-2/An-inComplete-Guide-to-Franchised-Chiefs/3f89daa2-a841-4e63-bec7-8b892642079f

Scroll down to this regarding Gonzalez:
“He’d eventually report to the team in late August and sign his one-year franchise tender. Gonzalez was inked to a seven-year contract by September, but one with a special clause attached to it.”

Now, in reading this I looked around some more and the Chiefs could trade Bowe, but pretty much has to be with his permission as he would have to agree to sign a long term deal with the new team and the Chiefs would need to recind the tag. However, Bowe does need to sign his franchise contract in order to report this summer.

  • February 26, 2012  - ED J says:

Ok Petey they do have to sign it so you right Either its not like Bowe is going refuse to sign it and not get paid. Like Cassel Bowe could join Rams workout long term deal or get franchise again with Rams either way its something that can happen enough with back and forth

  • February 27, 2012  - eric justice says:

Ok edj Bowe and Johnson stats arent equal. If you were given a chioce between the 2 you wouldnt care who you got? Really? Im sorry i got the trams mixed up. It makes no sencse for the RAMS to want him. Since 2007 johnson has 1200 more receiving yards and 13 more TDs. He has only 10 receiptions than Bowe and he has played with 4 differet QB’s during that time. This wasnt a personal attack on you this was just to show you the rams or browns or redskins or colts . They wont spend big money on a receiver who has been inconsistant. And yes there have been QB’s that have come out of college and been successful but which of those have been tonthe super bowl? Ryan hasnt gotten out of the 1st round. Bradford looked good as a rookie but never looked anywhere near that good again. Vince young looked good his 1st year and then never even close to that again. My point is you cant say he will be great. Its an unknown. And if your the Rams why wouldnyou take a 2nd tier wide out when there are a lot of thise in free agency. When your rebuilding you ddont go a trade down and take vererans who make big money instead of a rookie? Its a good thought but not realistic. RGIII would be great to have but i will not sit here and say he will take us to the next level. We both love the chiefs and want to see them succeed. Lets hope Pioli does well with the draft this year. 1 thing please dont compare Bowe to Johnson. They arent in the same league.
