Chiefs Update

From the Truman Sports Complex

Well, the Chiefs were unable to make it through the week without a roster move.

Just before they departed for the left coast Friday afternoon, the Chiefs made a roster move because of injuries along their defensive line.

Promoted from the practice squad was DT Antwon Burton.  To make room for him, LB Wes Dacus was released.  If Dacus clears waivers he’ll be added to the practice squad.

The move came about because of a rash of banged up defensive linemen.  DE Tamba Hali got very little practice time this week because of an ankle injury.  DT Tank Tyler got limited work because of a hip. DE-DT Alfonso Boone was limited all week because of a back issue.  DT Glenn Dorsey practiced all week but he’s been dealing with a knee injury that he suffered last week.

After Friday’s practice, Herm Edwards said he expected Hali to attempt to play on Sunday against the Raiders. How much he can contribute will be the question mark because of the lack of work. The Chiefs will list Hali, Boone and Tyler as questionable on the NFL injury report.  Joining that group will be WR Mark Bradley, who got some practice time in on Friday morning.

Listed as out are CB Pat Surtain, LB Donnie Edwards and G Adrian Jones.

Burton (6-2, 308) has played in seven games over the last two seasons with Denver, picking up nine tackles.  He joined the Broncos as a college free agent in 2006 out of Temple University.  He spent the last eight games of the ’06 season on the Broncos active roster.  He repeated that in ’07, starting on Denver’s practice squad before moving to the active roster for the second half of the season.  Bolden went to camp in ’08 with Cincinnati but was released before the start of the regular season.

Burton will wear No. 61 and will be active for Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

Looks like this game is over before it starts. With these injuries, no team can absorb this amount and try to stay competitive.

They need to put an ad in the KC Star and look for a new conditioning coach A.S.A.P.

Well if there is ever a time to have injuries, 1-10 is the time, however this hurts in not really getting to know if Tank is going to be the answer at DT…

As I watch more and more tape, defensively…Carr/Flowers have a bright future, Page is becoming a leader after a slow start, Pollard started hot and has cooled, Honestly even DJ doesnt deserve to start right now, at DT, Tank/Dorsey/Turk cannot be evaluated due to the chiefs lacking any gap control out of the Mike linebacker position.

This draft needs to be a trade back scenario, leading to the pick of Laurenitus…he will lead this defense, and help all those around him…Trading back allows KC to nab another 2nd round pick, and maybe a 4th, letting the chiefs look for a pass rusher in the 2nd round, as well as a Right Tackle if free agency fails.

Thigpen may or may not be the guy, but I wouldnt be surprised if the chiefs just bring in a vet like a Losman, considering Thigpen has shown that he has what it takes to put the team in a position to win, the defense just needs to find an identity.

    I agree Alex

  • November 28, 2008  - tm1946 says:

Alex I agree except a MLB will not fix the DL alone. There is some problem at DT and none of the high draft picks seem to be an answer in themselves. Maybe it is coaching or lack of same or maybe it lack of talent and drafting incorrectly, who knows (the chiefs never admit to anything). This may be the saddest part of the rebuild. Herm and Gunther both know what they are doing but have failed miserably with the DL.

I think patience is needed to be taken when it comes to defensive line. Especially defensive tackle. It took guys like Sapp and Haynesworth a couple years to adjust from college to play the position. I say give it more time does guys will come around. Definately Dorsey for sure. And even Tank.

  • November 28, 2008  - ED says:

Also to add to that I think defensive end maybe the only position I would spend another high pick on. If they can get a seriously good pass rusher on the at defensive end it would help Dorsey and Tank a whole lot. I think it even would open up thinks for Tamba. Remember Tamba had his best seasons when Jared Allen was on the other side. So Tamba may not be a good defensive end as a stand alone guy but maybe if you pair him with an elite defensive end he could perform at a higher level like he’s done in the past. I would compare him to Kevin Carter when he played opposite side to Javon Kearse he was a beast. The moment teams took a chance with him being the lead defensive end he looked more like a bust. So I think it would be very wise for us to try to find a stand out defensive end in college.

  • November 28, 2008  - tm1946 says:

ED you cannot have it both ways. You want to give the DTs more time and you want to draft an elite DE. How much time will you set aside for the DE to develope? 3 TO 4 years? Good chance DJ and Hali will be gone to bette teams by then.

That is the problem with taking years for players to develope, not one player to finish the scheme but multiple players. Add one and before he is “developed”, someone else leaves. This is why the chiefs rebuild is struggling, in the real NFL, teams are contantly rebuilding not waiting every 10 year all at once. Hello clark

Alert! Empty the sports bars and instruct all those within to apply for an impromptu try out for the remaining 5 Chief’s games! This is playing out like an opening scene from the movie, ‘Invincable’.

Allow me to go way out there, off the range and ranch and predict, (I truly HOPE), that we’ll see a sweeping change of position coaches in the off-season. That is, if the young indifferent owner hasn’t alread cooked up another scenario that will light up the lives of all the board warriors here for the foreseeable future?

  • November 28, 2008  - tm1946 says:

What if clark does just what he says he will do? Nothing, no changes, all management and coaches remain for another year. I suspect that is what will happen. Sadness for the PR and those who have to “sell” the chiefs next year. What would say to the public? Come see the 2009 Chiefs, they will try to win twice as many games as 2008 or we sucked last year but watch us only partually suck this year or (my favorite) come see the chief’s coaches before they get fired.

  • November 28, 2008  - ED says:

I think its a strong possibility Gunther will be gone next year. Of course you’re not going to hear rumblings of him being fired while you still have 5 games left in the season. But I do believe his days are numbered. Remember Herm defended Mike Solari most of the year last year. It still didn’t stop him from relieving him of his duties as offensive coord. neither.

And as far as defensive end goes. I think we got two guys at defensive end that can be good but not elite. I think we need to draft a guy that has the potential to be an elite defensive end. I definately think Everrate Brown can become an elite defensive end.

And to add to that we need depth at that position anyways. Alfonso Boone and guys like that doesn’t cut it. I always look at successful teams and see how they do things. Take the Giants for example. Last year in 2007 they had Strahan,Osi, Tuck, and Kiwanuka all playing defensive end. NOw this season Strahan retired and Osi had an season ending injury, but the Giants are still one of the top teams in sacks this season. Just goes to show you it never hurts to have depth at the position.

    >>”That is the problem with taking years for players to develop, not one player to finish the scheme but multiple players.”<<

Exactly tm. Herm’s scheme of replacing the roster with just draft picks will never work. Veteran players move on to winning organizations, fans won’t continue to support the lack of competitiveness and worst of all, Losing breeds Losing. A team has to remain competitive through rebuilding by mixing vets and young guys.

Successful drafts have to produce in rounds 3-7. #1 picks like Hali and #2 picks like Turk will ruin the franchise. Both were reaches when higher ranked players were available. Players on the board that the Chiefs needed were passed over in favor of these gambles. We are paying the house now.

Any one else notice that the majority of injuries are on the defensive side of the ball? Not the result of the Conditioning coach. The result of an Offense that leaved the Defense on the field too long. Getting better, but we fatigued these young defensive players early in the year.

  • November 28, 2008  - colby says:

As much as we need a pass rusher, do any of you guys really trust these clowns to draft ANOTHER defensive lineman with a premium pick? Honestly, I don’t trust them to draft DLs or to sign LBs in free agency. That’s where all the busts have been lately and is why our defense STILL sucks.

Perhaps they should try to draft LBs like Laurinaitis or Brandon Spikes, and sign DLs in free agency. Make a run at a Julius Peppers or an Albert Haynesworth. The way they’ve been doing it isn’t working.

  • November 28, 2008  - tm1946 says:

Maybe they can trade down the first pick and go for quantity over quality. That is a lie. The chiefs can use an impact player at almost any position, as long as he is an “impact” player. I still doubt clark, carl, or herm will sign any big name veterans at least until 2010.

  • November 28, 2008  - Mike O says:

With so many injuries, why are they keeping Surtain, Edwards and Jones. Put them on IR and try to find someone that is healthy and can play.

  • November 28, 2008  - findthedr says:

this guy got on the 53 after being on the PS for (i think) 1 wk, while Derek Lokey has been with the chiefs all through camp and is still on the PS.

yeah, Lokey is undersized, but he did bench 225lbs 38x.

  • November 29, 2008  - Michael says:

My wishlist..go after Haynesworth, Suggs or Peppers (Peppers would be my choice), draft LB Laurinaitis AND sign two more linebackers from guys like Leroy Hill, Jonathan Vilma, Mike Peterson. OG Jahri Evans from the Saints, OT Jordon Gross from the Panthers or OT Marvel Smith from the Steelers. QB Losman from the Bills-to battle Croyle for backup to Thigpen. RB Darren Sproles from Chargers, just for fun. Still look to draft DE, OL, LB rounds 2-7.

I had the same thought on Lokey. Was hoping to see him play this year, but Burton gets the shot after only short time with team. Must be a reason.

What does everyone think of LB Aaron Curry of Wake Forest? 6-1, 250, 4.6 Inside Linebacker. You hear more about others, but I’m starting to see Curry at the top of some draft boards, regardless of position.

  • November 29, 2008  - tm1946 says:

Watch out what you ask for. College LBs fit their college systems but will they fit the chiefs?? Hope the chiefs figure it out we do not need 3 years of waiting for a impact draft pick to figure it out for herm.

  • November 29, 2008  - ED says:

I think Herm will get guys thats more NFL ready. Remember he said this year before the 2008 draft one of the factors that he ways when drafting a player is whether he can step in and contribute now. One thing you have to keep in mind tm1946 is defensive line, receivers, quarterbacks, and some tight ends normally are positions that take guys awhile to develop. Linebackers,Safeties, corners, offensive lineman, and running backs are normally the positions you see immediate impact from guys. So that being said if we can get a stand out middle linebacker he should be able to come in and contribute right away. Hopefully we can land a Javon Kearse type defensive end. A guy that can contribute right away as well.

  • November 29, 2008  - tm1946 says:

I do not agree ED. Off. Line take time to become impact players, many of the best of KC’s history were HOF calibre but not right away. I am ok with your others. The problem is nothing to do with the 2008 chiefs players. herm decided to go young no matter what and that is the problem. In the NFL you are supposed to try to win games. For whatever reason clark h. got it across to herm wins do not matter in 2008. I believe it has gone into the players mind also. Play, try not to get hurt, and in a year or two we will play for real.

Sorry to wander, the cancer eating this team is the owner and his attitude or lack of same.

  • November 29, 2008  - Mark says:

It would be an absolute crime if Herm is allowed to stay and scapegoats a competant DC like Gunther. I think Gunther deserves to go with the collapse of the D, but far less than Herm needs to go. Herm was brought here specifically to fix the D and he destroyed it.

  • November 30, 2008  - Rin Tin Tin says:

Keep up the great work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC is behind you and we know that you will lead us back to glory very soon now.

AND NOW, Clark Hunt has RE-affirmed Herm’s The Man!

Looking forward to your return triumphant 2009 Herm!

    :-)

Too, reflecting back the off season 2007 leading into 2008, the Chiefs ‘DID’ in fact pursue other free agents, but lost out. You’ll recall (if you are capbale or amenable) we wanted C Jeff Faine and PK Josh Brown among others- that they signed elsewhere exceptionally fast was a matter brought to the league’s attention by KC, reference those teams ‘not’ abiding by NFL protocol regards pre-start free agency etiquette. Which is to say they cheated – broke the rules.

That Herm did not but did play by the rules is noble & he earned even more repsect in doing so.

Too, same off season last was ‘not’ bountiful as to quality talent available…this because most other teams usually do not let such talent even get to the point free agency.

    :-)
