Chiefs Update 9/17-Tyler Is The QB

From The Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs worked for just over two hours in the pleasant late summer sunshine on Wednesday.

After practice Herm Edwards announced that Tyler Thigpen will be the Chiefs starting quarterback this Sunday in Atlanta against the Falcons.

Damon Huard can play and right now is scheduled to be the No. 2 quarterback.

The decision was not based on the head/neck injury that Huard suffered last week against Oakland.  He’s capable of playing and he practiced on Wednesday.

“We think he’ll do a good job,” Edwards said.  “We’ll limit some of the things we ask him to do.  We want to take a look at him. He’s another young player we want to look at and see where he’s at.  If he struggles, obviously Damon can come in. He’s used to that and that’s what’s going to happen.”

Not working in Wednesday’s practice were QB Brodie Croyle and CB Pat Surtain, both out with right shoulder injuries.  LB Napoleon Harris who has been limited in his participation in recent weeks, went full participation in Wednesday’s work

The Chiefs made two moves on their practice squad, adding CB Travarous Bain and G Tavares Washington.  To make room for them WR Scott Mayle and S Dowayne Davis were released.

MORE ON THE THIGPEN DECISION LATER THIS EVENING

Any news on Will Franklin? Does it look like he will be able to play Sunday? Would he push Webb out of the nickel?

Excellent Decision by Herm. Bravo. Hopefully he maent what he said, when he said the starting QB of this game will play the whole game. No more yanking in and out, although I don’t mind the very occassional trick play with Hagans. let tyler Struggle, and no doubt he will. It’s the only way to improve and grow.

I wonder why Edwards bothered starting Huard last week. It looks to me like we are playing for next years draft choice. Edwards is saying to the rest of the team–I dont care if we win or not win–I just want to see what Thigpen has. Isn’t that what pre-season games are for?? HEY Clark Hunt–you need to stop this craziness, or next year Arrowhead will look like Bannister Mall. I have been a Chiefs fan since the 1960’s, and was lucky enough to be one of the waterboys as a young boy. Where is Jack Steadman today!!??

Starting Huard last week was a mistake. Going into a game wanting to do an in game QB platoon system was a mistake. Good to see Herm learned from his mistakes.

So is it safe to assume that the number 1 priority this year is evaluation and development of talent. I don’t have a problem with it, I just want the team (and fans) to be committed to it. I’m very disappointed in the fan base that will likely force the first blackout in years.

Is Maurice Price healthy and practicing? How long before he’s back on the 53? Ditto the question about Franklin. Will he suit up this week?

I think(Hope) the fans will get totally behind it, but it’s up to the team to stop sending mixed messages. Starting Huard last week, continuing to start the totally ineffective McIntosh, those are mixed messages from what the #1 priority should be. Level with the fans. We can take it and most will embrace it, but just level with folks. Explain why you’re starting Thigpen, and don’t couch it with “If he struggles, obviously Damon can come in. He’s used to that and that’s what’s going to happen.””.

I am glad Herm chose someone, anyone, for the QB position rather than this “Damon will start but Thigpen will see some time” crap.
“The decision was not based on the head/neck injury that Huard suffered last week against Oakland. He’s capable of playing and he practiced on Wednesday.”
Does anyone REALLY think Damon couldn’t have come back into that game? Herm is all about being “young” and Damon doesn’t fit in with that system. I am one of those fans that are upset about the Chiefs situation and I read your article this morning. Its not that we are rebuilding that is upsetting, its the play calling that seems to be based on “developing” players rather than winning.

I agree Mark. Starting Huard last week was a mistake, but not having Thigpen take all the 1st team snaps was a bigger mistake. That was part of the reason why he looked so awful (timing was completely off).

Our Oline is awful. Thigpen can buy time with his feet. Hopefully he learned from the last game that he can just throw in Bowe’s direction and he’ll go after it.

Now we have two Guards on the PS that were drafted by the 49ers and couldnt make their 53. This is the same 49ers that gave up 10 sacks last week.

Alphaman, I don’t think that any thing this season is safe to assume.

Findthedr, notice how we don’t sign anyone that’s been in the league for 8 yrs or more?

NOONE will convince me that there is not at least one veteran lineman out there that could not help this team. But that would require paying a Vet. guy.
How can you make any sort of evaluation on a QB, that is running for his life every time he drops back to pass? And then expect the QB’s you have to stay healthy too!!
A little disingenuous if you ask me.

    BUT I LOVE THE CHIEFS!!

  • September 17, 2008  - Mark says:

If there’s an Offensive Lineman that’s been in the league for 8 years, that’s available and out on the street, or that someone is looking to get rid of, it’s very likely he’s not any good. Like McIntosh, like Terry, like Turley. Hopefully we’re through with that type of player, and signing someone else’s old veteran trash.
