Chiefs Update 11/12
From the Truman Sports Complex
The spinning roster wheel stopped at defensive end for the Chiefs on Wednesday. Rookie Brian Johnston went to the injured reserve list with a calf injury and is done for the remainder of the season. To take his spot on the roster, the Chiefs signed veteran DE Jason Babin (left) off the waiver wire.
Babin (6-3, 260) was a former first-round draft choice of the Houston Texans in 2004 out of Western Michigan University. He’s played in 47 NFL games with 22 starts for the Texans and Seattle, with 13 sacks and 147 total tackles. He joined the Seahawks last season in a trade from the Texans for safety Michael Boulware, but played in just two games. This season, he played in two games for the Seahawks with one tackle, but was released on September 17.
His best NFL game was the final contest of the 2005 season, when he had 13 tackles and two sacks for the Texans against San Francisco.
At Western Michigan, Babin finished his college career with 38 sacks while playing in 47 games for the Broncos. He also had 29 tackles, eight forced fumbles and three catches on offense for 35 yards. Babin is a native of Paw Paw, Michigan.
In other roster shuffling, Larry Johnson was returned to the active roster and RB Jackie Battle was released and re-signed to the practice squad. Also added to the practice squad was QB Ingle Martin, who was released late last week to make room for safety Oliver Celestin.
The Chiefs also signed LB Kyle Shotwell to the practice squad. Shotwell (6-0, 232) played his college football at Cal Poly-SLO where he won the Buck Buchanan Award as the Division 1-AA defensive player of the year in 2006. Since entering the NFL as a college free agent with Oakland in ‘07, he’s been with five different teams: Raiders, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Minnesota and Tampa Bay.
To make room for those practice squad additions, the Chiefs released RB Omar Cuff, CB Michael Grant and DE Jermaine McGhee.
Also for those scoring at home, Wallace Gilberry is now wearing No. 92, not No. 94 which he wore last Sunday in San Diego. Babin was issued No. 94.
On the injury front, five players did not take part in practice on Wednesday: CB Brandon Flowers, DE Tamba Hali, LB Derrick Johnson, G Adrian Jones and LB Pat Thomas. Flowers, Johnson and Thomas are hamstrings, while Hali and Jones have ankle injuries. Right now it seems highly doubtful any of those five will play against New Orleans.
Limited in their Wednesday practice participation were RB Jamaal Charles, S Jarrad Page and CB Patrick Surtain. Amazingly, De Turk McBride took a full load of practice work, including being part of the first-team defense. Just a few days ago there was talk in the Chiefs hallways that McBride may be headed to the injured-reserve list because of a shoulder problem. But McBride said Wednesday that he plans to play this Sunday.
Wayne Wade Smith is taking most of the snaps at RG with the No. 1 offense; he stepped in and replaced Jones in the Chargers game. Rookie T Barry Richardson is also getting some practice snaps at guard. (Sorry Wade for messing up your first name.)
Herm Edwards said his linebacker depth chart for this game has Rocky Boiman and Donnie Edwards starting at the outside positions with rookie Wes Dacus at middle linebacker. The backups would be Demorrio Williams at both outside spots and Boilman in the middle.
Larry Johnson shared the backfield snaps on the first team offense with Charles and Dantrell Savage.
The team worked for two hours outside, in cold and windy conditions.

Man, DOES ANY ONE know anything about Derrick Pope?
I mean about his reputation, was he a problem child or what!?
I don’t understand the Chiefs not bringing this guy in for a look at LB.

I’d direct this question at Bob but, he doesn’t seem to have time to answer any questions form this forum.
Also I’m confused about D.Patterson, NFL.com shows him a being on IR http://www.nfl.com/players/search?category=name&filter=patterson&playerType=current
Maybe NFL.com has bad info, but I think the Chiefs should consider bringing him back.
Unless there is something unknown to us about him.
I do wish there was a site (maybe there is) that if one so chose, could get info like that.
Glad to hear Turk is toughing it out. That guy came out of college with a tough as nails reputation. Glad to see he’s kept it here in the pros. I think Babin is an upgrade over Johnston. I’m sure Johnston will bounce back next year and be a better player, but for now, the Chiefs need some pass rush and hopefully Babin provides it.
I hate the injuries, but I like the trend of free agents the Chiefs are looking at. Namely, guys who were high draft picks not that long ago who just didn’t make it for one reason or another on their original teams. Mark Bradley (2nd Chicago) has proven to be one hell of a find. I’m hoping to see more out of Ricardo Colclough (2nd Pittsburgh) in the next few weeks as well as Babin (1st Houston). At least in their efforts to improve they are trying to find guys with some legit physical skill.
My only gripe is that they didn’t sign enough projects like this in the offseason. Rookies are great, and getting younger was a necessity, but these reclamation projects can potentially add tremendously to a team’s depth and every now again, you can find a good starter….like Mark Bradley.
Bob, Your killin me man! LOL
I was trying to figure out where the hell this “Wane Smith came from, I had to go ck Chiefs roster.
If that confused any one else he means Wade Smith.
Earlier post didn’t go through so I’ll try again. VICTOR HOBSON! Signing him would make all the sense in the world! Herm drafted the guy for crying out loud!
I have an educated guess on why Mr. Babin’s production fell so dramatically….. STEROIDS or a lack there of.
I agree colby, he would be someone else worth looking at, but see WE don’t know the scuttlebutt on guys around the league.
Any of these guys you and I have mentioned may have some serious character flaws.
JohnNdallas,
Bob does answer questions from this forum. As for your other question, Patterson (like brackenridge) is slow with no upside. I guess when it comes to slow players, Herm would prefer a slow veteran to a slow near-rookie player.
I’m happy to hear that the chiefs are finally giving a Richardson a look at RG. I think he could be a very good starter there.
Doesnt say good things about Demario that he is a backup at LB to Boiman. That alone makes me think that he wont be on the team next yr.
Offense is going to be so much better with LJ back there. Being in shotgun will make it easier for him to pickup blocks in the passing game, and space in the running game.
Perhaps Boiman is more prepared for that side. Otherwise I’m very surprised how Williams is being marginalized.
JohnNDallas
You’re right, there may be underlying issues to both Pope and Hobson, but I’d love to see either of them signed soon. Herm didn’t even mention Erik Walden, so apparently he isn’t ready to contribute outside of special teams.
findthedr
Agreed on Barry Richardson at RG. He may not have what it takes to play LT (his position in college) but you’ve got to think with his size and strength, that he could do well at RG. I’d rather keep Wade Smith on the bench as our backup center, but he did do a decent job in the 2nd half against some pretty good SD DLinemen.
Also, it looks like Demorrio Williams might be the Chiefs latest free agent bust at the LB position. I really had expected he would reverse the trend as he was a beast at Nebraska and was productive for the Falcons. For some reason, when the Chiefs give a LB a multi-million dollar deal, he disapoints. The year’s not over yet, but Williams better figure it out or he’ll join the not so distinguished list of Shawn Barber, Glenn Cortez, Kendrell Bell, and Napolean Harris.
Yeah, Well, your wrong on Patterson, he has more physical upside than Brackenridge.
But his release seemed a little strange to me, maybe he pissed someone off some how, WHO KNOWS!
And I’ll take a wild guess that you and Bob had a personal talk. LOL
John,
I’m pretty sure both Patterson and Brack run a 40 in the 4.6s.
Patterson has been bouncing around with diffrent teams since 2005. He’s no spring chicken. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimitri_Patterson
Chiefs are happy with Carr, Flowers, and Leggett…who are 3 cbs they think that can grow into good players. If Surtain can ever get healthy, than that is 4 decent cbs for the yr. Obviously the chiefs will need better more players next yr when Surtain is released, but an old and slow Patterson doesnt fit into their plans. With 2 capable starters in Carr and Flowers, and a decent developemental prospect in Legett, I expect the chiefs to address the cb situation in the 2nd day of the draft, UDFA, or the waiver wire next yr.
Good comments by all, thanks. We all know injuries happen and losing teams seem to have more than winning teams. We wil be very pleased if some of these players are about to not just play this year but be part of the future. But does it not play on your mind the chiefs chose to not spend all available money before the season began and possibly got healthy veteran players who would be filling in now.
It appears, the powers that be at 1 Arrowhead dr. disagree with you too, they signed and “old guy” in Colclough, who is the same age as Patterson, both 25 that’s not old.
My main point is something must have happened to cause the Chiefs to release him so suddenly, he wasn’t playing that bad. Take into consideration that NFL.com showing him on IR is another flag, and on another site I was looking at reported him on the injured list w/a bad hoof on Oct 31.
We imo didn’t upgrade with either long term potential or short term emergency help by signing Colclough, At least Patterson knows the D.
John
I remember Bob reported on this site that Patterson had an injury at the end of the Jets game and the Chiefs reached an injury settlement with him. My guess is he got hurt to the tune of 4 weeks out or so. It probably wasn’t enough to IR him and the Chiefs needed immediate help at CB so they just payed him some of his money and sent him on his way. Maybe he’ll get resigned later, or perhaps have the opportunity to catch on with another club.
Ah, ok, well that makes a little more sense colby.
Not sure how I missed that, but OK
John, findthedr is right about Patterson and Brackenridge. They have no future on a Herm Edwards team. They are not Herm type of guys and I thought that all along. Might as well take a look at some other guys. I do agree though, both of these guys disappeared sudden and a little mysteriously.
The bright side of all the injuries and signings is we have a good chance of finding some depth for next year and maybe a couple of starters. Not to mention it gives us something to look forward to and talk about. I like Babin’s potential, maybe Krumrie can so something with him.
John, although Colclough and Patterson are about the same age, Colclough is in his 5th season while Patterson is in his 3rd.
Here are there career stats respectively
60TKL, 3.5sacks, 2FF, 1INT, 7passes defensed
http://www.nfl.com/players/ricardocolclough/profile?id=COL084595
27TKL, 0sacks, 0FF, 1INT, 0passes defensed.
http://www.nfl.com/players/dimitripatterson/profile?id=PAT410630
Colclough made most of his ’stats’ in 2004 & 2005, while Patterson made his in 2007-2008. Neither of these guys would be on a chiefs roster next yr, but in no way does it appear that colclough is a ‘downgrade’ from patterson whom the chiefs have seen plenty of. I really cant understand why you are so upset by a scrub being cut.
TR&G, Brackenridge has been cut twice, Neither time was a surprise to me.
But I didn’t/don’t understand cutting Patterson, signing Brackenridge, cutting Brackenridge, and then signing Ricardo Colclough!?
If you just wanted a guy to fill a void seems logical to me that it would have been Patterson, after all he was in camp and he wasn’t playing horribly.
Something is amiss, not suggesting any thing sinister but I’d like to hear “Paul Harvey’s The Rest Of The Storey.”
Another good pick-up with Babin, another guy who could revive his career here. Pope has been on my list, too. But, who knows what the real deal is with him. Couple of other guys who could be interesting, if not for legal troulbes: DE Darrion Scott (Vikings), DT Ed Johnson (Colts). Other guys who might be worth a look: DE-KGB (injuries? Age?), CB Justin Miller, DE Dan Bazuin (Bears), DT Marcus Tubbs (Seahawks), LB Matt McCoy (Bucs), LB Brandon Moore (49ers),S Glenn Earl (Texans). Of coursee, it’s hoped the Chiefs won’t have to make many more additions.
Boiman ahead of D. Williams at LB? That’s good, because at least in the last game, he showed better tackling than DJ or P. Thomas. So did Dacus, Gilberry and McGraw. Maybe the time off with injury will help DJ and Thomas, in a odd way, with rest time. Really like Leggett at CB. He’s got great recovery speed. Good to see the Chiefs blitz more, and doing more stunting on the DL in the last game. Really helped, and I hope they do even more.
What’s the deal with RB Jackie Battle? Why is he in the doghouse? Not one carry in the San Diego game, and now back to the practice squad. Just as curious as the Patterson release. I heard they might put him on injured reserve, then nothing.
my guess is that the chiefs didnt want to give Battle the ball and have him ’show up.’ That would have forced them to keep him on the roster since alot of teams (like denver) are hurting for RB.
He would have probably only gotten playing time if both savage and charles were injured. Chiefs are taking a calculated risk on keeping him on the PS….and ‘hiding’ him by keeping him on the bench makes that easier.
dr. Lets look at what really counts GAMES PLAYED.
Colclough, entered the league in 04
Games played 37
starts 0
Tkls 60, solo 47 asst 13
Sck’s 2.5
Pdf 7
Int 1
FF 2
Patterson entered the league in 05
Games played 23
starts 0
Tkls 27 solo 24 asst 3
Sks 0
Int 1
Now dr project those numbers out and tell me that they improved. Take into consideration he has not been in this system and well…..
They downgraded!
I’ll say it again, there was some other reason he was released.
findthedr,
I think you are right about Battle and trying to hide him it makes since.
I also like the start for Rocky Boiman, he seemed to be a little more “fiery” than Williams, and definitely showed better tackling technique. I think another thing to look at with Brackenridge and Patterson is the special teams play, in 2007 together they totaled just 22 stops, while Colclough, has 24 for his career. Another SP point is that he (Colclough) is an experienced kick returner that could step in for return duties for Savage should he be asked to handle a bigger load carrying the ball. KEVIN ROBINSON, didn’t impress in that aspect last week and brought a ball out that should have stayed back in for a touch back.
On a completely deferent note, I think we may have finally found a decent FB in Cox, he seems to be getting the job done - good pick-up/keep for Chan.
JB
Not to beat the Patterson thing to death, but the guy was NOT slow. I never saw a 40 time for him, but he looked plenty fast when on ST coverage units. Also, I’ve seen a couple of Chiefs players acknowledge him as one of the fastest guys on the team. Obviously there’s more to being a cornerback then just being fast, though.
I wouldn’t write off Robinson as a kick returner just yet. He made a couple of iffy decisions on Sunday but he looks like a very explosive runner. The blocking was not very good on a couple of his returns.
It would be nice, however, not to have to use a roster spot for a kick return specialist.
For gods sake Gretz, this is your profession. You’ve screwed up 3 names in the past month. Maybe your fingers are too fat to hit the right buttons
Yes, Bob, all blog posts must be letter-perfect! It’s an Internet Tradition!
That was rude! I suppose you never make typos huh tripe?
ILChiefsFan,
At one point I have seen Patterson’s 40 time, but cant find the link right now. Here is a link estimating it at 4.6
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=54685&draftyear=2005&genpos=CB
Brackenridge ran a 4.67 at the combine and a 4.55 at his proday
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=67710&draftyear=2007&genpos=CB
For comparison’s sake, cottam who is 260lbs ran a 4.63 at the combine.
As for fastest guys on the team, that distinction probably goes to will franklin who ran a 4.37 40yrd dash followed by jamaal charles with a 4.38. Franklin is faster within 10 and 20yrds too for those who care to know.
Another point,
I disagree with some others about Robinson. I thought he did a great job in kick returns (other than taking the ball out 5yrds deep in the endzone). Although he didnt show much in punt returns, he showed solid hands.
Based on that (and his prior history), he is a solid upgrade to savage in ST.
findthedr,
I agree on Robinson, although there was also a play where he misjudged a kickoff (pretty windy day, though) and another where he basically ran into one of his blockers in the open field.
On Patterson, I’d like to know where they got that 40 time. He didn’t go to the combine, and I’d guess tha he didn’t have a Pro Day.
In an interview Jamaal Charles named Patterson as the one guy on the team who might be able to hang with him in a 100-yard dash. Doesn’t mean Patterson was the 2nd-fastest guy on the team, but it would indicate that maybe he was faster than a 4.6 40.
Your right ILChiefsFan, Patterson wasn’t invited to the combine, so I’m not sure where dr got those #’s either (or who ever composed that article)
And he did seem pretty quick to me too.
Maybe colbys right, about his injury, but it must have happened on the last play in the Jets game.
He had good coverage on that TD pass, it was just a good throw and an awesome catch.
I’m pretty sure I remember some quote from gun or herm speaking of patterson saying he is slow. Patterson wasnt at the combine but he did have a pro day with tuskegee. I found a link showing the 1st day saying patterson was going to participate on the 2nd day but never saw the info.
He really isnt worth hunting the info down on, but you all are welcome too.
