Chiefs Free Agents

From Tampa, Florida

The NFL Players Association released an early “unofficial” list of players who will become unrestricted and restricted free agents this spring.

The list is called unofficial by the NFLPA because it does not include players who may have voided the final year of their contracts because of performance clauses.

The Chiefs list is very short. The following players will have the opportunity to become unrestricted free agents:

  • DE Jason Babin
  • LB Rocky Boiman
  • S Oliver Celestin
  • G Adrian Jones
  • S Jon McGraw
  • LB Pat Thomas

And, the following players can become restricted free agents. That limits their options when it comes to leaving Kansas City, if the Chiefs decide they want them back:

  • C Rudy Niswanger
  • S Jarrad Page (above)
  • WR Jeff Webb

Jones and Thomas are the UFAs who were starters last year, although Babin and Boiman became starters because of injury. Among that group, the biggest contribution came from McGraw on special teams.

Among the restricted free agents, Niswanger and Page were starters.

Off the 1st list, Boiman is a keeper (not as a starter 2nd team mike), Jones would be a decent BU for the right price.

The 2nd list, Page is a keeper, Nieswanger would need to find another position.

    Good luck to the others.

    IMHO

Just wishing and guessing here we go.
DE Jason Babin keep and move to OLB draft DE
LB Rocky Boiman keep good blue collar hard hitter
S Oliver Celestin ????????????? cut him
S Jon McGraw keep him good spec. teams and relief
LB Pat Thomas ???????????????? cut him

C Rudy Niswanger not great reviews 2008 cut him
S Jarrad Paige “bone crusher” must keep
WR Jeff Webb after we draft Jeremy Maclin (#3) we don’t need Mr. Webb

We have a center, can draft another, draft DEx2 and move Tamba Hali and JB to OLB. Draft Clay Mathews from USC and cut Donnie Edwards and Pat Thomas. Maybe we can package LJ and some of these “cuts” in a trade for some draft picks???

    Well my turn.

DE Jason Babin – Let him test the market if he doesn’t get a team take him back cheap.
LB Rocky Boiman – Keep for back up don’t pay him alot..
    S Oliver Celestin – Goodbye
G Adrian Jones – Same as Babin.
    S Jon McGraw – )(
    LB Pat Thomas – Goodbye
C Rudy Niswanger – I would like to keep this guy if he cannot be replaced with someone better he is young and the center position takes a unique guy he isn’t that bad Last year was his 1st start.
S Jarrad Page (above)- PAY THIS MAN!!
    WR Jeff Webb – Goodbye

Jarrad Page is not the “Bone Crusher”. That would be Pollard.

)( for McGraw??????? what do you mean?
Good points on all, maybe I was a little quick on the Rudy Cut.

That was a ditto for McGraw I like the guy but I wouldn’t get into a bidding war for him.

  • January 30, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

Nieswanger, some folks (myself included) think is TOO tall to play inside, lot of the same folks think he’d be a better guard, that doesn’t make a whole lotta sense to me, he’s still in most cases going to be lined up over a guy shorter and can get lower than he can. That’s why I wonder if he could play Tackle.
Read some stuff from a couple of scouts about him as a draft prospect, said he had good feet.

  • January 30, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

    John,

That is why I said unless someone better could replace him. My thinking is though he is a smart guy and being as tall as he is in his 1st year starting he didn’t do that bad usually a young center doesn’t do well anyway. Not that he should be a lock but I would hate to get rid of a good center if he could actually continue to progress thats all. He is only a restricted FA this year if the Chiefs could keep him one more year and see how he does I would do that before moving him around. Yes he does have the feet and ability to play Tackle wouldn’t know how he would do until you put him there but as I said Centers are hard to come by.

  • January 30, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

I like Nieswanger, but we definitely disagree about how he played Center.
He got zero push, on qb sneaks they almost killed him, Goal line, notta, he was ok pass blocking, but that’s not enough, as you and I agree that the Center position is a critical one. ( I personally believe center is THE MOST IMPORTANT for the O-Line.)

I actually think W.Smith done a better job than Nieswanger did. Rudy needs to get a hell of a lot stronger but I still think his height puts him at a disadvantage on the inside.

    KEEP!!: Page

    CONSIDER: Niswanger, Babin, Boiman, McGraw

HIT THE ROAD JACK: Jones, Thomas, Celestin, Webb

  • January 30, 2009  - tm1946 says:

With free agents, the primary concern is money not if they can contribute or not. There are guys walking on the street who could fill in for most of these guys. The unrestricted FAs, tell them to test the market and come see the Chiefs if they want to stay here and the Chiefs can match offer. The restricted FAs make the minimum offer to keep them, all of them except for Webb. Webb should test the market, he will get a chance somewheres else and good luck to him.

if we “watch the pennies the dollars will fall into place”tm1946 I believe we are several $mil under the salary cap. Although it is of concern those that are keepers should maybe get more than minimum.?As the quote indicates we need to continue to watch our spending, and get what we pay for. The film needs to be watched for the veteran FA just as for the draft. We need the right 53 more than any “name”.chris_texas )( thanks, I agree with you I don’t think I would get into a bidding war for too many players. Jon does have a good sense for the game and is good on special teams. I hope that the new HC will put as much stock in the special teams as the off. and def. We need a hand full of mad dogs and kamikazes on spec. teams. It is all about field position.

Several HC contracts are up tomorrow!!
