Chiefs Changes Bring Same Result In Loss To Ravens
From Baltimore, Maryland
With all the changes, all the new faces, all the blood, sweat and tears, the outcome of the Chiefs season opener at M&T Bank Stadium looked awfully familiar.
Forget the final score of 38-24 in favor of the Baltimore Ravens. Yes, the birds covered the big number that the Vegas odds makers put on them. But the 14-point victory was not a blow out.
It was just like a lot of games Chiefs fans saw last year with a different general manager, head coach, coaching staff and roster. The Chiefs had a chance to win in the fourth quarter, just like they did so many Sunday’s last year.
Brodie Croyle, who started at quarterback for the injured Matt Cassel, led the Chiefs on a scoring drive and when he found TE Sean Ryan for a 10-yard touchdown and the PAT kick was added, the score was 24-24 with just 5 minutes, 21 seconds to play.
All things seemed possible at that point. The Chiefs offense was finally starting to find a rhythm against the vaunted Baltimore defense. The Chiefs defense was giving up a lot of yards (501 yards in all) and spending a lot of time on the field (the Ravens had a two-to-one advantage in time of possession), but they got a takeaway that set up a touchdown and they were still in the game.
But just like so many of those days for the 2008 season, they came up with an “L.” The Ravens scored a pair of TDs in the last 2:06 and won the game they were supposed to win.
And the Chiefs lost the game that everyone thought they would lose.
“We played the game the way that I thought we had to play it,” said head coach Todd Haley. “I made it very clear to the team that for us to win the game, it was not going to be pretty. For us to win the game or have a chance to win the game, it was going to be downright ugly.
“And really, that’s the way we played until the big play they had for the touchdown on the post.”
That would be the 31-yard touchdown pass from Ravens QB Joe Flacco to WR Mark Clayton, where the Chiefs sent a double-safety blitz and left cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Maurice Leggett in man-to-man coverage. Carr was the guy that Clayton beat for the score.
“We had a play called for that,” Flacco said of the touchdown to Clayton. “We expected them to do that. The O-Line did a great job of protecting the gaps and giving me just enough time to get the ball off.”
The first quarter was an offensive disaster for the Chiefs, as they had nine plays for a total of five yards. They had one real shot at moving the sticks on their third possession when on 3rd-and-5 Croyle connected with WR Mark Bradley. With the sticks right in front of him, Bradley stepped out on the wrong side of the first-down marker. An officials’ measurement showed the Chiefs short by an inch, an inexcusable error by a veteran wide receiver.
Here’s how those nine plays went down: Johnson for five yards, Johnson for minus-four, incomplete, pass to RB Jamaal Charles for one yard, sack, incomplete to Bradley, Johnson ran for minus-one, a six-yard pass to Johnson and then the four-yard completion to Bradley that was short.
“When you’re on the sticks on a third down, you’ve got to get the first down,” Haley said. “That’s just the NFL. You’ve got to get the first down and keep the drive alive.”
While the Chiefs offense was stumbling around, the Ravens were throwing the ball all over the yard. Flacco had absolutely no pass rush pressure on him early, so Baltimore kept throwing and throwing and throwing. With an offense built on a strong running game, the Ravens went to the air. In the period, Flacco threw 13 passes and he ran twice when pass plays were called. Baltimore had 22 plays in the quarter.
“We wanted to put the ball in the air, at least early on in the game and see what we could do from there,” said Flacco. “That was pretty much the game plan.”
Flacco took them on nine-play, 54-yard drive on the Ravens first possession that culminated with a 44-yard FG by Steve Hauschka. On Baltimore’s next possession, Flacco took them on a 13-play, 70-yard march, picking up five first downs and reaching the end zone on a short three-yard pass from Flacco to RB Willis McGahee. The play was typical of the first half, as Flacco had all day to throw the ball, changing direction twice as he ran around. The only Chiefs hand to touch him was nose tackle Ron Edwards, but it was just that, a hand.
When Hauschka hit the PAT kick, Baltimore had a 10-0 lead and it looked like it was going to be a long, long afternoon for the Chiefs.
But in the second quarter, the Chiefs defense toughened up and then the special teams stepped forward and provided a big play, something that has been lacking from the Kansas City kicking game for the past several years. With the ball at the Ravens 16-yard line, punter Sam Koch lined up to kick the ball. After the snap, Jon McGraw came crashing through the middle of the protection and blocked the punt just as it came off Koch’s foot. The ball rolled into the end zone and changed hands several times before McGraw was able to pull it in for the touchdown. Ryan Succop’s PAT had the scoreboard at 10-7.
Baltimore came back and went on another long drive, as they moved from their 19-yard line to the Chiefs 23-yard line, as the Ravens picked up four first downs. The Chiefs defense bent, but did not break. OLB Tamba Hali picked up the club’s first sack of the season, when he chopped Flacco’s arm, forcing a fumble. The quarterback recovered, but Hali had the sack and a forced fumble.
Later in the drive, FS Jarrad Page’s hit knocked the ball out of TE Todd Heap’s hands and OLB Mike Vrabel deflected a third-down pass by Flacco forcing a FG attempt. But Hauschka’s 41-yarder was just wide left and the scoreboard did not change.
As the defense and kicking game got it going, the offense continued to have problems. Their fourth possession was three plays and out, picking up five yards. It was not until the two-minute warning of the first half that the Chiefs got their initial first down of the game, as Croyle connected with WR Bobby Engram for an 11-yard gain. Ultimately, that possession simply ran out the second-quarter clock and the Chiefs went to the locker room trailing by three points.
The defense again got something done on the first possession of the third quarter. Succop’s kickoff went out of the end zone on the fly, and Flacco took over at his 20-yard line. They moved to the Kansas City 33-yard line, but on a 3rd-and-9 play against the Chiefs nickel defense, Flacco tried to throw left, but Johnson got his hands on the ball, juggled it, eventually pulled it in and took off down the sidelines.
It was 70 yards later that he was finally knocked out of bounds by Flacco at the Ravens six-yard line. Two plays later, sandwiched around a penalty against Baltimore, Croyle hit WR Dwayne Bowe for a two-yard score and the lead. Bowe beat SS Dawan Landry. That coverage assignment was set up when despite being at the two-yard line, the Chiefs went with the shotgun and three wide receivers.
Succop’s PAT kick gave the Chiefs a 14-10 lead. But after knocking all his kickoffs into the end zone or beyond, this one was a dribbler and after the return by DE Dwan Edwards, Baltimore started the possession at their 36-yard line. Flacco took the offense 64 yards in 11 plays before finding TE Todd Heap for a nine-yard TD pass. Heap beat ILB Corey Mays on the play. The PAT kick gave Ravens the lead back 17-14.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs offense put together its first scoring drive. After a punt, they started at their 10-yard line and picked up six yards from Johnson on the first two plays. On 3rd-and-4, Croyle got max protection and Bradley was one-on-one down the right sideline against CB Fabian Washington. There was plenty of bumping, but Bradley was able to bring in the ball with one hand and it turned into a 50-yard play.
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, the next three plays lost one yard and Succop came in and hit a 53-yard FG to tie the score at 17-17.
That’s when Flacco moved the Ravens 76 yards, taking nine plays to make it happen. The big gainers came on a 24-yard Flacco to Heap pass and a 22-yard run by RB Ray Rice. The touchdown came on a one-yard run by FB Le’Ron McClain. The PAT gave Baltimore the 24-17 lead.
But Croyle drove the Chiefs back with a six-play, 80-yard drive where 50 yards of that came on a third down completion to Bradley. The score came on the 10-yard pass to Ryan, who fumbled the ball, but was able to recover it in the end zone. It was Ryan’s first touchdown of Ryan’s six-year NFL career. Succop’s PAT tied the score.
Then came the Clayton touchdown and with 31 seconds to play, McGahee scored on a one-yard run for the rub salt in the wound touchdown that made everybody who gave the points so very happy.
“I think it says that we’re pretty good on offense and we’re able to score points,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of what the victory showed of his team. “It also says we have some poise about us.
“We want to be composed and we want to be able to finish football games the way we did in this game.”
Oh, how the Chiefs so badly want and need to find out how to do just that, stay composed and finish football games.

Yes yes, different conductor, same results…now 0-5 for the ‘new’ Head Coach, OF CO-ORD, gameplan man and general all everything all-around not so swell guy
And you
? Your influence was apparent out on the field today too. That line of ours? Highly offensive to be sure!
Herm, Brodie Croyle looked fabulous and should/no question will be the starter next Sunday against OAK when we fall to 0-6 on the season….all your guys did well today Herm’s The Man!
Now then: a Baltimore Ravens team that was flat, over-confident – with good cause – and relaxed after mopping up the field with KC still came out with a dominating win – 14 points the margin when only 13 was the spread.
Can’t take any positives out of yet another loss – no change, no change at all from last year ’08. Those who claim otherwise are niggardly in their integrity: if it was Carl P and Herm’s fault in 2008 then it too must be
&
s same in 2009…can’t have it both ways.
Sure there is some area’s that need improvement but over all they played hard amd were in the game for the most part.
Next week is another step in getting better.
Go Chiefs!
And a GREAT GREAT as well spot on blog yours Bob G! Keep on being the man of integrity you have always been.
I didn’t like the double safety blitz toward the end of the game leaving Carr one on one for that game-winning touchdown. Either way Bob lay off on the Chiefs we played alot better than everyone gave us credit for. Especially not having Cassell and Flowers. They picked on Leggett time after time. He looked like Otis Smith Sunday. Getting beat over and over again. The way he played I see why we drafted Donald Washington.
Either way good game alot to build on. We showed alot of heart against the Ravens this week. Should beat the Raiders Sunday. Hopefully Flowers and Cassell will be back this Sunday.
Another thing we could’ve did better in this game was take pressure off the defense. The Ravens double the time of possession. Mainly because Haley did not put the game in Croyle hands early in the game. Too many run run pass. It looked like Solari was back calling plays clearly we couldn’t establish the running game against this team and we needed to throw some balls downfield to open up the run. We didn’t do that early on and that defense started to wear down in the 4th quarter. Hence the reason why we gave up 21pts in the fourth. Thank God Haley made an adjustment unlike what Gailey would’ve done in the second half to help make a game out of this one.
Progress noted where indicated. The Chiefs fought hard all game and faded a little at the end. Faded a little at the end….that has to be fixed.
“We played the game the way that I thought we had to play it,” said head coach Todd Haley. “I made it very clear to the team that for us to win the game, it was not going to be pretty. For us to win the game or have a chance to win the game, it was going to be downright ugly.”
- why, that sounds exactly like HC Herm Edwards talked in 2008; Hailme’s finally located reality & has found that it resides not in “any 22 will do”, ra’her, in not being an a** clown as he has to date… this 0-5 start his be no doubt a fine impetus to help him find some humility…
Let’s see a show of hands of all those folks thinking the Chiefs, who wisely started Brodie Croyle, would have the game tied 17-17 late in the 4th quarter. Hold ‘em up high! Not that many…that’s what I thought! Way to go Brian Succop! There are encouraging losses and discouraging losses…and this was the former in my opinion! Just sayin!
So you enjoyed seeing the Chiefs lose today Rin? You are clearly a Herm and Carl fan. Not a chief’s fan. You have some sad life priorities since you spend so much time on here talking in incoherent sentences about how you know nothing about football. Best of luck to you and please don’t ever leave the house. Child molesters like you have no business or right to live
daddy-o? seriously, was that the best you could come up with?????????
Looney believes the chiefs will bring in at least 1 vet offensive lineman this week (now that their entire season salary isnt guaranteed).
My thoughts:
Offense
QB:
1. Croyle made some great plays. He still isnt yet comfortable in the new offense and their is some miscommunication. He would probably look as good as Flacco if he as on baltimore’s team.
2. Thigpen- lol he is the wildcat qb now.
WR:
1. Bowe- he was blanketed all game long, and made 2 big catches when the chiefs needed him. He was essentially a decoy today. Without TG we should expect him to be double teamed all game every game.
2. Mark Bradley- made some plays and got some looks. Did some stupid stuff that you shouldnt see from a seasoned vet (not catching the ball with hands, short routes on 3rd down, running out of bounds BEFORE the 1st down marker).
3. Engram- 1 clutch grab, but basically a non-factor
RB:
1. RB were not a factor at all. Most of that was line play, but some of it was them being indecisive.
2. LJ pretty much blows. He isnt fast enough to go outside, and he doesnt his the hole with authority. I swear i saw him just slide before defenders got to him. Basically the cocksucker was taking a dive. He should have been cut.
Oline:
1. Baltimore invested in the offensive line and it shows:
a. LT- Jared Gaither- steal of the supplemental draft
b. guard- Grubbs- 1st rounder
c- Center- probowl FA pickup
d- guard- Chester- 56th overall pick (2nd round)
e- RT- Oher- 1st round.
idiot chiefs fans think that an offensive line consists of a 1st round LT and then 2nd day picks. That offensive line got them about 500yrds total offense. Remember this when next yr everyone is clamoring for drafting another defensive player.
2. Albert has not looked the same since losing the weight. That was obvious even in preseason. He came in at 340lbs, and is playing probably around 310. I would like to see how he looks at 320.
3. Oline blows, but the right side of the line isnt playing as bad as I expected. They did go up agains the baltimore ravens (one of the best defenses in the league). They havent really worked together as a unit much and I expect them to improve as the season progresses.
TE:
1. Sean Ryan is doing more than I expected out of him. Hopefully he continues to progress
Defense:
the chiefs were tied with baltimore with 3minutes left in the 4th quarter in a game they had no buisness being in.
Dline
1. went up against a very good offensive line (as I mentioned earlier). Was able to stop the rush early and play “bend but dont break” Cant complain too much when these guys as a whole are so young.
LBs:
1. DJ made a huge play INT (what a catch!) that lead directly to a TD
2. Corey Mays was abused by Todd Heap, but that was to be expected
3. unable to get a consistent pass rush
4. Hali got little pass rush, but he was going against Gaither who is 6’9” 340lbs.
5. Flaco beat some tackles and pressure with his feet.
Secondary:
1. Mike brown made a stop in the run game
2. Page defended some passes
3. Legett was getting picked on, and he improved as the game progressed. That being said I saw him proved tight coverage all game long.
4. Carr got beat on the go ahead TD. He has to know that he cant let a reciever get passed him when there is no saftey help. Completely his fault.
5. As a whole were inefective when they blitzed
ST:
1. COlquitt was inconsistent. Had a huge 56yrd punt as well as a shank.
2. Succop had a long FG, had 1 kickoff for a tb, and some really short kickoffs.
3. McGraw kept the team close with the blocked fg and td. coverage units as a whole were pretty good.
4. Returner was again piss poor. Legget almost lost a fumble. This area has to be upgraded.
Coaching:
kept the game close. playcalling was better than during the herm yrs, but could still improve. Defensive blitzes were innefective.
Nice analysis Dr. Although I don’t completely agree with everything you said, it was well thought out.
You forgot to mention that Rin sucks balls.
Rin, it is you in fact YOU who is the a**clown. It was CP and Herm who chopped this team into pieces and left it with zero depth. Herm’s player Albert looked like an a**clown against an average LB in Johnson. Herm’s CB’s who got owned all game. Get over yourself and post somewhere else. This site is for those who want to see Chiefs succeed, not revel in their defeat. Haley will bring accountability to this team and they will start winning games. Hopefully Cassel gets better so Herms spaz Brodie and Pigpen don’t have to be counted on to piss away another game.
Chiefs changes bring different results in loss to Ravens. This iteration of the team didn’t show any signs of quit. Brody played well when he had time to hold the ball and search for an open receiver. Fewer drops from those the ball was thrown to.
Need time for the Oline to gel. Brody got a little too panicked in the series where he didn’t hold onto the ball while being spun to the ground. But that wasn’t the 31st ranked defense in the league KC faced all day long.
Bradley finally showed up, wish he’d have gotten the first down early on that third down completion. DJ showed up too, after being sat down and effectively told – pick it up or you won’t be starting, just because you have since you were drafted.
Would like to see more pass rush, but it was three vs five linemen with a running back chipping and releasing.
Overall, a fine effort for the first Haley NFL game which actually counts for anything, considering the turnover on the roster from Harm’s last pitiful effort til this opening game.
Few remember what the 1989 team looked like either, this version looks similar. Good job to all the coaches and players.
Tomorrow it becomes Raider Week.
Hey! That ‘Q’ tip sure showed up today huh al(ex) k?
82, Scottie, Erin-erm, Aaron, Analonymous… anything to add?
heh heh heh!!!
Findthedr you make some good points but the Chiefs biggest problem was getting off the field on third downs. Had they stopped The Ravens on third downs in the second half then KC may have a chance to win the game. Those failures kept the defense on the field too long before they ultimately wore down. If they can fix this the Chiefs will surprise a lot of people this season. I hope Flowers will be ready for next week. Even though Croyle was restricted with the game plan at least he gives the Chiefs some hope if Cassell is down for a moment.
Rin,
I know you get a your rocks off getting a rise out of us. But truth be known – NOBODY LIKES YOU. Not only do we not like or respect you as a blogger, we don’t like you as a person or fellow human being. You can go on thinking that this banter is some form of demented love, but that is your fantasy. Keep livin hte dream, man, cuz that’s all you got. Yes we get mad and fire back at your posts, but that’s where we leave it. Unlike you whose life revolves around your fantasy friends, we have lives. You are but a minute distraction in our day. Let me make it clear for your grade school intellect – WE DO NOT LIKE YOU IN ANY WAY. I speak for the legitimate fans and bloggers when I say that.
And yes, you suck balls pole smoker.
And hey! Mike Brown – another
&
pick – got beaten for the game-winning TD!
Somewhere, Bernard ‘The Bonecrusher’ Pollard is smilin’! Maybe he signs with OAK this week so he can come back into KC and lay a little lovin’ on the Chiefs…
heh heh heh
“ST:
1. COlquitt was inconsistent. Had a huge 56yrd punt as well as a shank.
2. Succop had a long FG, had 1 kickoff for a tb, and some really short kickoffs.”
Not sure we watched the same game. Our MVP’s were the kickers. Colquitt had one shank, but at least 3 or 4 over 50 yards. That is all that kept us in the game in the first half. Succop had at least 3 kicks into the end zone. One of those went out the back.
Don’t remember seeing Leggett with much tight coverage either. Seems he gave up a lot (and I mean a lot) of completions with him barely in the picture. He had a couple of long passes that he was right there, but they chucked 10 yarders on him all day.
I know everyone will fall back on the defense wearing down, but they weren’t tired in the first half and were getting torched. Only Baltimore’s own mistakes kept the score low. I think they could have run every play up the middle and won by 30. That was a 5 yard average right there. I didn’t see any progress on defense, which was suppose to be the big improvement. Send 9 guys and can’t get pressure?
Gonna be a very, very long season. Even the coaching staff knew this one had no chance. Think Cassel and Flowers would have been on the bench if they thought there was even a chance? No.
Croyle did look good though. Made some great throws with defenders in the backfield all day long.
Lassie,
Just got a chance to write, unlike you I have a life, life? That would be friends, family and obligations. Anyway, the Chiefs looked totally different today than at any point last year. Sure they lost the game, but you had a man, not a puppet, in charge. They will lose more, but they are heading in the right direction. Great effort today, continued progress this year. It is sad that Bob, posting under an alias, agrees with himself. No difference? A lot of difference, and by the way, preseason records are kept seperate from reg. season records. Otherwise Herm’s would be even sadder. Bad doggie, bad doggie, and now to the neighborhood cookout. I wonder if there will be dogs hot off the grill. Oh quit whining, in an American made hotdog, there is very little chance of any meat, your litter mates are safe. Kind of like your postings. arf
Rin, Carr gave up the winning touchdown. Unless Brown was supposed to blitz and play in coverage at the same time? I think that’s asking a bit much don’t you?

Bakjon,
I expect our secondary (and 3rd down defensive stops) to improve with Flowers in the game.
BinSC,
Colquit’s shank put the defense in a tough spot. Has Haley said it is all about consistency, and neither kicker or punter was consistent.
Rin, rewind your DVR. Carr gave up the winning touchdown. #95 Jarret Johnson was bulling through Albert all game. Gave up sack and the forced fumble to # 95 who has only had 10 sacks over the last 4 seasons and gets 2 sacks against Albert. Watch the game next week instead of blogging Bob’s site to death with your annoying drivel.

heh heh heh!
I must say Haley told his team it would be ugly to stay in the game and he was correct. Just how much do the Chiefs have to invest in the DL and do more than hand fight? Thanks for nothing coacn Krumrie. Jackson and Magee just are guys, after one game they showed they did not deserve their game check today. Not a Dorsey fan but he played today.
Did anyone else notice that Brandon Albert stunk up the game the rest were not much better? It could of been the Ravens def plan but he was flat backing up and beat most of the game. LJ looked done but if the Chiefs did any offensive blocking it might have been better, I guess. For a team that needed a running game to stay in games, what a flop.
At least the game was exciting but a loss is a loss, no moral victory today.
While only one feels the need to repeat ONE THOUGHTS all day long ……Must of us can say in 1 or 2 blogs the whole synopses of the day . I have nothing to add too your rag Carl. PnS
Now Rin e’en has them lambasting their own beloved Chiefs players … heh heh heh! Oh what power they have subscribed to He that is me!

My day is made. Even better, you never did rebuke my homosexual inuendos. Two for me. none for you. I will logoff now with the last laugh. Life is good. Go Chiefs!
el cid,
I agree with you about Albert. I kind of wish they would’ve left him at RT his rookie year and worried about LT through free agency. I bet the staff didn’t pursue a LT this year because they didn’t want to make Albert’s transition from the right side for not. Perhaps, I don’t know. I agree about the D’line. Krumrie is a goof. His Hand slap coaching is redundant. Wish the LB’s could’ve done a better job tackling in the second half. The MLB’s were nowhere to be seen against the run.
As they prepare for RADUHS! week next loss theirs soon to be 0-6 on the season Jr.

EL cid. Lay off the defensive line. I watched the game they weren’t great but they weren’t awful either. Its a young defensive line. Its going to take at least 2 or 3 seasons before those guys play up to their potential. Referring to Jackson and Magee. The offensive line didn’t run block good but who does against Baltimore. I mean come one you talking about a team who has went 2 yrs plus w/o allowing a 100 yard rusher. You act like we were facing the Rams front seven.
Findthedr totally disagree about Leggett. Cam Cameron had this guy circled. He got picked on all game long. He made a few plays here and there but for the most part he was getting abused out there. I hope Flowers will be healthy enough to play Sunday although if not shouldn’t need him against the Raiders. They have absolutely no receivers worth mentioning. Its the run game we’re going to have to shut down with them.
I can’t believe that no one has commented on the following:
I. Brodie starts against the vaulted Baltimore defense and AT Baltimore without knowing if even starting with just a few hours notice. Yes, the 1st qtr offense stunk…but they did warm up.
II. Defense was tired in the 1st and 2nd half for three reasons: 1. Multiple short offensive series to start game. 2. Blocked punt for TD gave defense NO rest time between Balt offensive series and… 3. Interception and quick score put defense back on the field QUICK.
III. Defensive pressure needs to be better and our best CB (Flowers) was out and they picked on Legget ALL 1st half.
Of course Baltimore will have more offensive yards and Chiefs more allowed more defensive yards allowed. Baltimore had TWO more offensive series than KC and KC scored 14 points with 7 yards of offense.
Without our starting QB and best DB we couldn’t win but this team never quit. I am much more encouraged than last year.
Not sure about the Raiders not having a receive so we shouldn’t have to worry about them….
The Ravens weakness is suppose to be that they don’t have a receiver. Worked out pretty well for them. Anybody that thinks we are going to walk over the Raiders better go ahead and get their counseling ahead of time. We are going to struggle with everyone on the schedule. I originally thought we would win 4 games this year. I’m thinking that may have been optimistic. We just don’t have enought NFL players.
One comment during the broadcast I thought was very telling, Pioli had apparently said they had 30 players from the past year that were no longer with the team and only 2 were on a roster (1 being Gonzalez). Tells where our talent level is. We are starting almost from zero. Thanks Herm.
ED,
I agree with you about Leggett. I wish our corners were playing tighter coverage off the line of scrimmage instead of 8 yards off. I don’t know how much of that is the D cord doing it the way he wants but the corners today weren’t playing very instinctive football. As fast as Leggett is he needs to play more agressive off the line and definitely start jumping routes for the pick. I personally think Coclough is garbage. I thought that in preseason too. I think he is wearing #23 now and I just never see him in good position to make plays. DJ had a good pick but he needs to become a better tackler if he wants to be a starter in this league. I bet that is why he’s not now. But Williams is a crappy replacement. LB needs to be addressed to fix this D. In particular MLB if we’re serious about the 3-4.
Thanks to DirectTV, I got to watch my beloved and beleagured KC Chiefs. Some thoughts after I’ve had time to consider what I saw on the field.
1)Rin, you’re an a**hole. Fine, got that out of the way… now to some football observations.
1)As someone else said, the Ravens did shoot themselves in the foot in the first half, or otherwise this game would have been out of reach early.
2) Having said that, I will say this: The D finally showed up to a game. As pathetic as the offense was in the first half, the D and ST kept us in the game for a while.
3)The reason for #2 above is that once again, we seem to have an anemic offense. You cannot ask your D to be on the field for most of the afternoon and then get down on them when they get beat late in the game. Rin, you can give me all the crap you want about the D being “pros” or whatever else nonsense, it don’t matter. Until the O line gels, or God forbid we have to wait until draft time next year for some new talent, we aren’t going to sustain the kinds of long drives the Ravens did and wear the OTHER team down.
4)All things considered, and taking into account we still can’t seem to get to the QB, the defense played hard all day. They didn’t quit, nor did the O.
5)The main problem with the O? The O line. The game is won and lost in the trenches. If the O line can’t run block — and they couldn’t — they aren’t going to be real grand at pass blocking either. Solve the O line problem, and a lot of other O problems will solve themselves.
6)I’m no Croyle fan, but the kid came close to impressing me after he got rid of his early game jitters. Kudos to Haley (whom I’m also not a fan of) to yanking him in the first half for a wake up call.
7)The Chiefs got beat today by a much better football team — my preseason pick to represent the AFC in the Big Game. That they were even able to hang with them until the fourth quarter is encouraging.
8)Overall, I saw no quit in this team — a HUGE difference from last year.
9)If the Chiefs play as well against the Raiders as they did the Ravens, they should handily beat them. Then comes the meat grinder known as the NFC East, and my fellow faithfuls? Be prepared for the Chiefs at 1-6 at the bye. How they respond to getting beat week in and week out by better football teams is going to tell us a lot about whether Haley is a good head coach, or just a good offensive coordinator. If they respond coming out of the bye, we can probably expect a 6-10 season out of them. If they quit like they did under Herm, it’s going to be a loooooooooooooong season.
Regardless of naysayers like Rin, I’m optimistic. NO ONE gave them a chance against Baltimore, and they at least played them competitively. Carl P had to go just like Steadman had to go before him (yes, I’ve followed the Chiefs THAT long). The jury is still out on Pioli/Haley, but then, the jury wasn’t real optimistic at the beginning of Carl P/Martyball either. This reminds me of the Griefs of the 1980′s, they aren’t as good as we want them to be, but they aren’t as bad as we claim them to be. To sum it up: The D is improved. The O is still a HUGE ???? mark.
Sorry ED but I was always told “potential” just means you are not doing THE JOB. Every team only has 16 games per season and for everything good we saw today, this is not a NFL team. The starting 22 on offense and defense are poor a group as is in the league. Never mind who’s fault, it just a really cr@ppy team. 2010 will be better and so on but we get to watch this group. Without calling names just how many years does it take to replace Will Shields at RG?
As for Leggett, every team will test the weakest or unknown player until he proves himself. Did not do a bad job and will be better or benched soon.
I’m probably going to get lambasted for this observation about Leggett, but oh well…
Leggett did not get beat deep. In fact, if memory serves, he broke up two big plays that would have resulted in points. Yes, he was getting beat underneath, and he’s not the CB that Flowers is. What I saw, though, was a smart O coordinator who was picking his plays very well. My never to be humble opinion? If Flowers had played, Cameron would have picked on the other side with the same plays and similar results. Once again, if you can’t get to the QB, your CB’s are going to have a long day, I don’t care WHO they are.
heh heh heh!
#1 pick DE Tyson Jackson MAN-HANDELD by yet another rookie the better – Ravens OT Mi-chael OOOOOOO-her!

WHO MENTIONED POTENTIAL!! This team played toe to toe with one of the top two teams in the AFC. Just goes to show you how some of you guys are brain washed by who the media tells you who’s good. IF I last checked then we have our 2nd string QB out there. Defense wins games and unlike last year this defense is significantly better. Leggett got picked on today but next week will have Flowers so that want be a liability anymore.
Also LJ want have many games like that guranteed. I’m not going argue with you people downing the Chiefs thinking we just gone lay down this year and be awful. I’m just gone sit back watch us win AFC west and say I told you so every week.
If no one feeds the pet…the pet dies!
I know it’s never fun to lose, but we were without our best players. That changes the game! I hope they can get back there soon so we can start to see some W’s.
He’s baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
Hiya folks!
ED you mentioned potential, second sentence of last post. But I will back you 100% if the Chiefs contend in 09. I do not see how with the OL and DL. I am hopeful but am not sure about beating the raiders. Remember Dick Vermiel, his second year he had put together his offense but he NEVER gave a tinker’s damn about the defense. So far Pioli/Haley spent their time fixing (it is improved but not fixed) the defense, ignoring the offense line, and we must suffer thru a team that looks like a one armed boxer facing a world champ.

You CANNOT give up that many yards to the opposing team and expect to win. I saw a couple of comments saying the D was not that bad? You were watching the Chiefs/Ravens game…right? Not that I put it all on D. The O has to give those guys a rest now and then. But, you can’t let the other team run on you like that. Period. And time of possession was a killer.
Still, somehow….we were still there towards the end of the game. That’s encouraging. Ravens are a good team. We couldn’t stop their run game…is what it basically boiled down to.
To put it in perspective? Half the teams in the NFL are 1-0. The other half are 0-1. If we learn from our mistakes…we’ll be good to go. If we don’t? Long season coming up.
Not many expected us to go beat the Ravens in their house. But…we hung in there. Good teams find a way to win. We’re just not quite there yet. But, we will be.
And Rin / Hermstheman…f*ck the hell off. You’re nothing but a Troll. You only exist here because Bob doesn’t seem to care enough to “police” this place. And that’s the ONLY reason you get away with it here, and at Yahoo. Any other place, they don’t put up with Trolls like you…and you know it. I only hope someday Bob will see the light…and get rid of your worthless, sorry, pathetic ass. With Herm’s balls bouncing of your chin constantly…you bring NOTHING relevant to the discussion.
Seriously Rin why do you call yourself Daddy-O??? You seriously couldn’t come up with anything better? Sounds like a child molester’s name. Whitlock kind of gives me a child molester/I wouldn’t want to leave me kids alone in a room with him

A prix- er, coach famous for his prolixity says –
“I can take ANY 22 guys from off the street and… go 0-6 aft next Sunday’s loss to the Raiders.”
Should’ve done what Harold Ensley suggested and just “gone fishing”. Or was it golfing this guy
s supposed to be expert at? We know that it’s not football expertise his any based upon the evidence…
Scottie is just as Rin advertised he would be as to what he would say and how fancy-free wouldst be his tap-tap-tap dancing herein aft KC was bludgeoned by the Ravens.

Rin,
You’re nothing more than a common Troll. Lots of sites have them. Like BG.com and Yahoo, right? As long as Bob allows it here…then have at it. Enjoy it while it lasts.
But the great thing is…We can all choose to respond, or ignore Trolls like you. I think I’ll choose to ignore you from now on. You never say anything new or different. Your “schtick” has grown VERY old. *Yawn* BOR-RING.

I was encouraged that we kept the game pretty much tied up ’til the last 3 min. of the 4th quarter. I think we’re headed in the right direction. Things are gonna get better. Hopefully much better than the last few seasons. Keep the faith!
